Again another novel I've read mtled and can recommend. This time though I can genuinely recommend the whole story. Not just the protagonist. And he is the highlight of the novel.

He is ruthless when he needs to be.

Spoiler

You almost never see a female character die in korean novels. Period that just doesn't happen. They are never really evil always either manipulated (as if you did not have responsibility for your own actions even if you were mislead but who am I even trying to explain this to) or actually know more than the protagonist and are just "pretending". I despise that. Male characters die by the thousands but we can't let a single precious potential harem member disappear right. Well not here. In the very first "episode" the protagonist saves a woman who seems to be in danger turns out she is an assassin. She steals from him and in the end attempts to kill him. And instead of him forgiving her because for sure she was manipulated by an evil male character he actually kills her. But she isn't just a cardboard cutout character with no personality or reason to be the way she is. No she is a proper character and yet she gets what she deserves. That is more rare than a unicorn in korean and well in an absolute majority of japanese novels as well.

but he isn't just that he can be merciful but when he feels the other side deserves it not just because the other side is a female character. He knows what he wants and he isn't on a leash of some system or a poor implementation of the story. No he creates the story he moves the plot along. Which again is extremely rare he isn't just running errands for some overpowered allknowing character. He grows stronger by himself experiments and overcomes. He still struggles occasionally and gets help from others. But he is not dependent on them all the time. He also does not enjoy getting stepped on what a shock. The nobility in this novel isn't treated by him like gods to be revered. He doesn't give a damn. I love that. When I read this I couldn't believe that it really was a korean novel he is that much different from almost all of their other protagonists.

Then there are side characters. They get development both sides the allies and the enemies. Even characters that seemingly disappear immediately get a proper backstory. There are also characters that accompany the story for almost it's entire length providing a decent balance for the protagonist.

In terms of romance there is some development and he definitely is not an eunuch. No harem which is great. Won't go into more detail but I have to say that the female characters were handled rather decently in this novel. We get both womanly and delicate ones and strong and competent ones.

All in all I can really recommend this novel. There is a small problem though. It's a murim novel so the translation has to be actually good otherwise it will be hard to read. The version I read was fine translation would've been better especially regarding names and specific places but if the translator isn't exactly competent then don't bother and just read the mtl. <<less
