I’m the Slit-Eyed Character at the Academy, but I’m not the Mastermind

“When I opened my eyes, I found myself as a character in a game. It was bewildering, but I thought it was worth a try. That was until I saw the skill given to me. It was [Opening Eyes], with no abilities whatsoever.”

The story starts with the MC playing a game that is “Very Difficult”, so difficult, in fact, that no one has ever managed to kill the last boss. After 18 years of playing and, having the best attempt be at 30% of the last boss’s HP, he decides to try out a character that he never used.

This character was the Slit-Eyed character. It had garbage stats and garbage traits. But, since the MC had ran out of options with every other character, he was trying to see if he could find any secrets with this new character. So he puts in his name ‘Zero’ and presses play… Only to find himself inside the game, as the Slit-Eyed character.

Aside from playing the Academy genre in a very typical way, it does have some interesting facets. The issue is the author repeatedly sidelines the interesting bits for some very forced, and very not funny, slapstick comedy. It makes the read painfully frustrating at times, and that quickly diminishes my desire to read more.

This is an annoying novel to review in a lot of ways, because I have rarely felt so frustrated at something like this, which toes the line between greatness and incessant mediocrity.

First, I will preface that the novel is a very traditional take on a academy setting based on a game that the main character is privy to. It's a character whose goal is to fight against the big bad, using his knowledge of the future, and how he slowly integrates with the true 'main characters'.

An anomalous presence, and someone... more>> the world cannot help but take notice to. It's a formula that is hard to dislike, mainly because it ticks the boxes of someone who is powerful, but not living in power. In essence, it's a setting a reader can easily relate to.

The author has good skills weaving this narrative forward, and the scenarios have sufficient depth where they can stand on their own. No scenario ever seemed forced, and nothing emotional came off as melodramatic. It is very competent in that sense.

However, as other reviewers have mentioned, the author also seems to be trying to stand out of the crowd by adding something else... Comedy. I don't particularly mind the pe*vert jokes and their subsets, because it's easy enough to ignore and it's not like he's saying anything or doing anything outrageous.

I'm not going to pick specific characters or whatever, I'll just state the simple fact that this novel isn't that funny. This means, really, that when the comedy becomes a large focus, it just pisses me off. It's like a piss stain is on my screen whenever I have to read it.

Later chapters do seem to balance this comedic writing better, but be warned that earlier chapters have certain moments which can raise ones blood pressure. Also, if you actually want to read something funny, look at "Surviving as a Mage in a Magic Academy".

Anyway, I will say that if you can get over this flaw, and it's a flaw that gets better over time as the author realizes that nobody wants to see the main character get imprisoned for a gag, then there is a lot of good here. Enough good that the existence of the poorly executed comedy pisses me off.

This is quite bad, it has an wonderful background setting but it manages to blow everything off due to the amateurish writing. The only reason I'm not giving this a 1/5 is due to that.

The setting:

Spoiler

The setting has a fairly cunning main character (?), and a interesting background setting in the overworld.

Rats are what we call spies in that world, they are excellent, ironclad and determined, having a truly abrangent source of information. However multiple activities of the demon army are going on, unbeknownst to the rats of the greatest super potency in the world, the empire. From raising an Undead army in a ancient battlefield to mixing humans together with bipeds and demons to create an chimera that can be used in the demon army, danger lurks towards humanity. Politics in the human world are also not simple, a collusion caused the fall of an ancient noble family under sketchy circumstances and deal with demons, leaving no survivors that they knew of, while the heir successfully escapes and prepares herself for revenge.

Such person meets the cunning main character (?). Embroiling themselves in a conflict far beyond their capabilities. What would such an combination cause in this world future?

[collapse]

Sounds good right? But the author manages to blow it all out by making the place of their activities to be a damn academy. The character's are wasted in this location. Every single outside activity that is happening looks to be more exciting and interesting than what's going on in that place. Also this heir of the ancient family that fell? She's insufferable and is more of an main character than the supposed main character, she has that whole shounen aura of making friends and is considered an awesome person by everyone and everything.

As seen by people in the comment section, boy do they also love this character named Luna.

Pacing is atrocious. You keep seeing a ton of slice of life filler chapters which are meaningless.

"Comedy" is a major complaint of mine. The comedy is pure garbage that should be thrown under a bus and set on fire. It takes everything bad from early anime slaptistic moments and puts it into text form, I don't want to read how Luna decided to bite the 'main character' head for the tenth time because he was being a pe*vert. Stop it. An amazing background setting throw away by amateurish writing, shitty pacing, bad comedy and filler episodes. Don't read this unless you have nothing to read. <<less

Look, the novel is great it's just it's hard for me to read because of the girl Luna, I'm just constantly annoyed with her... In the beginning I was happy for their relationship but it became repetitive and Luna limits the mc's growth, basically all of the scenes from cha20 - 60 have almost Luna sht8ng every time... that it's not even funny or enjoyable.... it just annoyed me... I would probably love her if she could stop being clingy... but no.... every fkin scene she's there to dimnish my... more>> motivation to read this. but overall the story is grade... just that because of Luna, the MC don't grow and all of the chapter only include filler with luna's banters...

Well overall its probably 4.5 for me but it lowered because of the constante repetitive Luna moments, that's all but still a good read just losing my motivation a little <<less

I thought this novel would turn out to be amazing based on the premise and the first few chapters. 85 chapters at the time of this review, and all I can say is that it is disappointing. My biggest gripes are the author's use of slapstick comedy and the pacing.

There's a reason that slapstick isn't used in novels, but in movies and animation. The whole point of the joke is that it is over-the-top action that is witnessed visually, writing down that someone is biting on your... more>> head or performing a WWE wrestling move on you just falls flat because it's hard to imagine seeing that action and then having your characters continue on like it's a normal occurrence. As if that wasn't bad enough, the author inserts these jokes at least once every chapter. As someone else mentioned, he's also a massive weeb that has to insert anime tropes and then repeat that trope the next chapter. He's one of those people who thinks that the joke gets funnier each time you repeat it.

Example:
Spoiler

The trope about someone opening the door without asking and seeing the MC in a pe*verted position with a female is used twice as an ending in the span of 5 chapters.

[collapse]

My main issue with the pacing is that in these 85 chapters, about 60% is the plot being moved forward while the other 40% is filler content. Whether it's monologuing, exposition, comedy, etc., it's all just meaningless dribble that has you skipping through until they mention something related to the main quest. As of chapter 85, we haven't even started to get ready to take down what is essentially the chapter 1 boss. Literally, the story is framing it as
Spoiler

The MC still needs to learn the boss's backstory, set up a time to meet the boss, resolve an inner dilemma with killing, etc., all before even getting to the actual fight. WTF

[collapse]
something that will need another 10 chapters of setup.

It's still 3 stars because the cast of characters are pretty lively and there are some abilities that are so peculiar that you can't wait to see how they get evolved, and the translator is GOATED, but if you truly want to try and get into this, wait till it reaches at least 150 chapters if not more. Might as well find another novel, because it's gonna be a while. <<less

if ur a fan of a written slapstick comedy (reminds me of shonen anime but probs more female characters), that can also be emotional and srs when it needs to be, this is the story for you. If u favour hyper-realism and love consistent characters with no unnecessary gags, dont read this.

lot of ppl in the reviews seem to dislike luna and the use of weird gags. I agree that luna used to get on my nerves, but once I started seeing this series as a pure comedy and not... more>> a weird 'tsundere' romance, I realised that it was honestly, pretty funny. Unlike other series where the tsundere is just an as*hole for no reason, here luna recognises herself for being a bit of an a**hole. Shes shocked when reze wants to be her friend and she apologises to zero near ch 70 cos theres a bit of self-awareness in her character.

but u might say, thats inconsistent character writing. How can she be aware shes an a-hole, want to be close to MC, but also continue acting that way? And my answer is - its a damn comedy. Its meant to be on the nose, characters are meant to bend to add that brevity. Ppl dont bite others on the head, its obc unrealistic and meant to be pulled as jokes to lighten the readers up. If that pulls you out of the story, fair enough, but just dont read or review-bomb this series

i think ppl also get thrown off bcos this series can get super emotional at times as well, with the parrot and the 1st boss both having some srs backstory. I think it just adds emotional weight to the story, and the inconsistent characters add brevity. When u see the story as these sections just that, insted of the author inserting weird romances and writing a srs work.

the story seems to be thought-out (at least so far), the plot is considering the long-term and beyond the teasing and the gags, the characters are well fleshed-out

trust me guys, if u go into this with the mindset of a fun shonen-anime comedy style in ur head, with a little bit more female characters than is usual, while also being quite emotional, ull find this series to be a masterpiece like I did. Come in expecting smth super serious will just leave you disappointed. <<less

Initially I really liked the setting of this novel.... the way the game was explained the way MC isekaid into game and the world building is also nice but out of all the things most intrigued me is character setting of MC. how he explained his skills the slit eyes and all and the way he told us that he's like that mysterious character everyone fears..

But the biggest drawback was unnecessary gag comdey.... the pe*verted template was used like 1000 times repeatedly...I mean what I expected in the MC's character... more>> was that he's serious cold mysterious guy whom everyone fears and misunderstands him that's what I expected and that's what I looked forward to. But they made him into pe*verted gag comedian trope... like okay we can laughg at it for twice may be... but what's with the continuous use of the same trope.... but when the story gets serious it's really good takes us to the edge of the seat...

But as the chapters went on they even started to use this trope in the middle of the fights which ruined the tension in the fights.. and that first heroine.. they wanted us to see her a cute yandere but at this point she's just annoying and ruining the seriousness of character built around MC which I don't personally like. she trying to possessive is okay but the childish fights everytime and obstructing MC's plans that she'll solve everything..... and most of the comedy scenes that built around her are not at all funny and just lagging the story...

The rest of the heroines and side characters are really good and they got depth not just 2d...

That's all I want to say about this... just the comedy template annoys me tho initially it made me laugh but unnecessarily dragging story just for sale of those... that too especially when we're in the intense moment of plot reveal is not good <<less

This novel is worth reading, it has your typical isekai setting into an academy life but also throws in lots of attractive characters, settings and situations to make it interesting. It has a lot of comedy mixed in too.

The only problem I have is with 1 character, the main (?) heroine of the novel, she's the 1st to enter the protagonist's harem. She is also a psychopath obsessed with him. Constantly sticking close, stealing all of the protag's time when he's busy powering up, always biting, hitting and twisting his... more>> neck. I know I'm supposed to laugh at how miserable the protag is but only at the beginning. I have read to chapter 60 and I swear every chapter after 30 will include her hitting the poor guy at least 2-3 times per chapter, it's getting tiresome.

All in all it's a 4 star novel for me, the only complaint I have is about 1 character, sadly she's monopolizing all the screentime recently so I can't see more progress on the storyline and other characters <<less

As of writing this, I've read it up to chapter 50.

First and foremost, it's very obvious that the author is a massive weeb. Many troupes that you would see in a Japanese Novel are present in here, including the long ass novel title.

Also, most references are about Japanese Novels and Anime, like how Zero is basically Xellos from Slayers.

With that being said, it's actually quite a fun novel to read. If you enjoy Japanese Shounen and Korean Academy Novels, then you will feel right at home reading this one.

Definitively a pretty good novel.

A bit like Death Flag, not so much like BTDG but I would rank it at the sale level. The closer light novel might be Terminally-Ill Genius Dark Knight.

Translation is top level, almost professional level. Furthermore, it is pretty uncommun getting 10+ chapters releases per week.

By the way, I am a suscriber to this translator

Spoiler

What I am wondering is how Zero may successfully keep a low profile and do not turn out as a protagonist. Actually, he has no choice there, as he must defeat the hidden bosses in the shadow.

This novel is good and fun to read and the characters are all likable and you can't hate any of the characters also for a dead side character the story itself for it was amazing. Author has really put an effort in depth of characters which you can notice when every time they interact with MC.

Another novel with a MC that cant be himself because the "Game character" control all your emotions, etc, so at the end, is the MC doing it, or just the Game? I dont like when the autor restrics emotions to the MC with skills like "No fear" Etc, thats not the original MC, we are seeing just a character.

I love this novel. It's like a breath of fresh air in the Academy genre, and you can totally feel the Anime vibes in it. The author's nailed it with a story that's not just another rehash – it's fresh, it's fun, and it keeps you guessing. I'm telling you, the comedy in this is top-notch, but it's not just laughs all the way. There are some serious moments that hit you right in the feels.

The characters are the real deal. They're not just cardboard cutouts; they've got depth, personality,... more>> and some of them are downright hilarious. And the main character? This guy's a trip. He's always up to something, keeping the story moving and keeping you on your toes. You never know what he's gonna pull next, which makes every page a blast.

Seriously, give this one a shot. It's well-written, the plot's engaging, and it strikes the perfect balance between comedy and drama. As an anime fan, I'm all in on this one. 100% recommended! <<less

Promising so far, to early to tell how it will continue so leaving it at 4 star, might change this later though could forget.

It's good so far but not at the same tier as Reverend insanity only web novel I liked enough to consider 5 star, other 5 stars would be the Dresden novels, Malazan book of the fallen series, Eat man manga (Old, but I still really like it, just hit right for me)

As of now it's too early to tell how it will fair but currently would... more>> consider it around these:
Demonic emperor (slightly worse than RI but still really good, like 4, 5 star)
Renegade Immortal (slow, but I really liked it, 4-4, 5 star)
Hail the King early parts (MC got strong too quickly near the later parts, didn't really feel earned)
I became the tyrant of a defence game (same translator, Quite nice so far)
(I like sneaky characters as might be seen from the above examples so could be a bit biased...)

Could be great will have to see how it continues but it has potential at least.

No story spoilers below other than the premise.

Written as of chapter 20!

Main theme:

+Transported/reincarnated into a game (subset of isekai)

+Game system with skills and stats for powerups

+Hidden pieces/secrets tied to powerups gained from prior knowledge (MC played the game for years thus can be expected to know a lot of secrets so it's not unexpected)

Plot:

MC need to avoid too much interaction with the games maincast of characters to not weaken them to much nor disrupt the story's intended flow.

thus they are limited to the sideline npcs for recruiting allies though it already goes against this a bit, not to the point of full out taking main characters for his own team but interact more with them than the premise first suggested.

Instead of following the games intended story their goal is instead the hidden boss (maybe mastermind types of foe?, that planned everything while a figurehead takes the place publicly as the story bosses) while leaving the story boss to the maincast, at most giving hints but keeping some distance.

It avoids the common point that everyone loves the MC right from the start regardless of how well known they are that most stories seem to like instead the characters has traits that causes npcs to avoid them: offputting aura, slit eyes (think gin from Bleach), menacing/rude speak pattern.

So far it has avoided the trope of everyone singing their praises but for how long this keeps up will be interesting to see or if they fall into the usual route of people liking them from their deeds (Helping people, rumors spreads of them defeating bad guys etc) thus ignoring the initial premise of a disliked character due to traits -> Discrimination, personally would like to see them stay as a background character rather than be loved by all in the end, would be refreshing for it to not follow the norm.

Starting point leaves them quite weak with low stats and no op skills, powerups are mainly from hidden pieces rather than numerical stats and gambling for skills with stat points, This system could be abused by author to just give powers whenever without proper buildup but so far hasn't, only time will tell if they can keep it this way, (to me it's more fun if things are at least foreshadowed, giving uses to something that seemed of no value rather than just "here have the exact solution to your problems out of nowhere")

Only 20 chapter are available as of this review so can't say much more to quality, it's fun so far just hope it keeps the quality going forward. <<less

Its written amazingly. It has a very interesting story/plot together with a well executed comedic undertone. 100% recommended the characters are well flayed out and described and they have their own unique personalities instead of simply being embodiments of concepts. The MC is also incredible as he is always active and thus being the one that moves the story forward, his personality is also one that makes it hard for you to guess what he is gonna do next which makes him very enjoyable to read. Give it a try!
