As the owner of an ordinary bookstore, Ling PingAn’s biggest wish was to muddle through life and do absolutely nothing.

However, customers that were right in the middle of their pubescent crisis kept visiting his store in the dead of night.

For the sake of his business, Ling PingAn had to mimic their childish tones, sparing no effort to promote the books in his store.

When he finally managed to sell his books after going through a great verbal tug-o-war, each and every one of them said that they don’t have money and that they wish to use various tools that were seemingly divine artifacts as pledge.

Looking at these customers, Ling PingAn could only agree to them resignedly.

But little did he know that every single book that these customers purchased from him had altered in appearance.

“Secrets of Cosplay” became “Lower Abyss Research Report”

“Stellaris: Settings for Synth Ascension” was in fact “Gospel for Synthetic Beings”

What’s more, in the eyes of these customers, he was actually a horrifying ruler of Diablos, an indefinable entity that held the reins of all realms.

In this regard, Ling PingAn said, “I’m not, I didn’t, don’t talk nonsense.

This is legitimately funny and also a great take on Lovecraftian mythos.

For people who are worried about a harem: there hasn't been one in 356 chapters. Also, not all of his customers are women. Also, as many other reviews have stated: it wouldn't make sense. This is emphasized throughout the novel. It's basically hammered (pun intended) in every time MC interacts with a woman.

For people who say this is a plagiarism of Demon God's Lackey: there are similarities (bookstore with OP proprietor who doesn't know he's OP) but it's otherwise... more>> a completely different vibe. You'll be bothered by it if you're the type of person who can only read one isekai iteration and call all the others plagiarism/boring. I love both stories. If I had to draw a comparison - DGL feels more like LotM to me, while this is closer to MHH.

For people who say this is nationalist: it is in the same way a lot of American books are, with China being the best country ever and the land of the free, etc. It didn't bother me, but I'm used to ignoring that kind of thing.

I'm genuinely enjoying it and don't see that changing. 5/5 stars. <<less

Loving the novel so far. The novel starts off a bit slow, but throughout the story, we get more and more hints about the real identity of the MC. Yes there's a lot of Chinese nationalism in the novel, but other than that, I there's no other flaws.

Spoiler

The MC is literally Azathoth (Lovecraft Mythos). I see the whole "MC is dense/s*upid" thing that other reviewers dislike as a personality trait. Azathoth in Lovecraft is known as a "Blind Idiot God", and the plot up until now seems to be following this allusion. The MC sees the world around him as a normal human, but from an outsider's perspective, the MC is a incomprehensible god, and the bookstore he lives in is a den of eldritch horrors. This use of perspective emphasizes the "Blind" aspect of Azathoth quite well.

Secondly, there is no harem. If you think this novel has a harem, then you didn't read closely enough. The MC feels no real attraction to females, as to him, he can only tell if a female has a generally appealing face, but feels no love or infatution with the females. After all, why would Azathoth, the creator of life/existence care about something like human love?

[collapse]

Overall, if you want a ridiculously OP MC (the most OP you can get in fiction), look no further. Ever wanted a power fantasy to scratch the "One Punch Man/Anos Voldigoad wasn't strong enough, I want someone stronger" urge? Here it is. <<less

Our MC is a guy in his late 20's who owns and runs a bookstore in a dystopian future with demons and devils. People are only visiting him during the night to buy books, and the books he picks out for them turns into something else from the buyer's perspective. It seems like the MC is something more than meets the eye but he is absolutely clueless about it.

The concept of the novel is pretty good but it was ruined by the translation group so I dropped the rating to... more>> a 3. I mean, the quality is readable but you get missing money numbers, he and she mixed up, names changes, and sometimes incomprehensible sentences that leave you guessing what the author wanted to say.

Another thing I don't like is the author starts using ideas from games and movies. I don't want to spoil it in this review but it's kind of annoying to me. And then as the chapter count gets higher, the POV switch gets longer and longer like the author ran out of ideas to write about the MC himself. Author looks like he's trying to drag out his/her novel by having multiple lines of sub-stories going on. The MC is the common denominator while three or four different stories are being rotated through. I estimate 60% of the novel is not about the MC. So you get drawn out point of views of many people including their thoughts, dreams, fears etc that just becomes pure nonsense filler because the reader doesn't care about. One major issue is that a lot of people are complaining of the nationalism in the novel but that's typical for chinese novels. If you can tolerate the author going china #1 all the time, give this novel a try. <<less

If it wasn't for the amount of nationalism and other world side character fillers, I would've rated this a 5. I literally love this story. The nationalism is somewhat annoying to me as basically the Chinese author wrote how he wanted China to be. It is a copy of America, but instead of a president, it has a fixed imperial family. To add onto that, China is #1 in the world, every1 wants to become China, every1 wishes they were China. The story doesn't name the countries that... but it... more>> is blatantly obvious on what the country references are. Seriously though, as long as u can get past the first few confusing chaps, mostly on what the main world / MC is due to side char / world confusion, the main story was really interesting to me. <<less

The novel is pretty interesting, funny at times, the problem is the nationalism all the time, about how they are great, good, have high morals and all the other countries are either poor, bad with their citizens or both. If you can stand this it's really funny to read. I just skipped 3/4 of the chapters from chapter 100 because I was tired of the nationalism.

The natiolism of this novel is pretty much the same as wank

At first, it's okay since it's just fiction, but then it happened again and again till it just ruined the mood

The story doesn't focus on romance is a plus for me, the girls are just there for plot, but there are just no male friends which makes it kinda bland and looks like a harem (which is not). If we ignore the nationalis-wank and all the bad points, it is a good novel

If you’re basing it on the standards pf a Chinese novel, I’d say it’s pretty good. It’s kinda confusing at the start but you’ll slowly get more and more information about the background of the MC as you read. There are some parts that I found boring and skipped over but it’s kind of a slice of life so there isn’t much you’ll miss even if you do.

This is one of those novels that you just want to read for the sake of reading about an all powerful op guy going about his daily shenanigans without knowing how op it is.

I really don't understand these people here talking about how s*upid and idiotic the MC is not realizing his powers and how his 'harem' is full of bland beauties. Sigh.. There is no harem and the MC is not idiotic at all. If the people had tried to read a little bit more they would have realized... more>> everything is explained by the author and this is another thing I love about this novel that it explains the extreme opness of the MC and ALSO explains why he seems like an idiot not understanding his powers. His whole persona and why he seems like a guy who is so out of touch with reality that it's cringy is all explained logically by the author. I would be giving spoilers if I said what exactly the reason is so I am not.

Another thing is the nationalism. Honestly I do find it a little annoying but I never really understand why people always seem to find trouble with this in novels. Obviously this novel was written for a Chinese audience so of course it will be full of their point of view.

Overall this is a pretty great casual read if you just want a slice of life with a super op MC just going about his life. <<less
