There is a girl in my house called Incompetent.

She is the girl who suddenly came to live in our house as soon as I turned eight years old.

Father suddenly said, “From today on, she’s your younger sister. Be careful in public.

At the time I didn’t understand what he meant by “just a younger sister” and I didn’t understand what he meant by “be careful in public,” but somehow I understood that it was okay to treat her roughly, even if I didn’t understand what he meant by that, just by looking at the way the adults were treating her.

I didn’t know what it meant to be “nice,” but I knew from the way the adults treated the girl that it was OK to be nice to her, even if I didn’t know what it meant. …… But I didn’t know what “nice” meant either, so I decided to leave the troublesome matter to the girl who had become my younger sister.

I was not sure how to handle the troublesome things, so I decided to leave them to the girl who became my sister. ……Well, basically the maids would do the troublesome things for me, so I continued to leave them to the girl who became my sister.

However, when I turned 15 years old,…… or maybe even before that in truth, I realized.

I realized that what I had been doing was a form of bullying,

So I decided to apologize.

I didn’t …… know that it would turn out to be quite different from what I expected.

The main character in this is so bad that I don't even have the spare brain capacity to pay attention to the plot, any of the side characters, or the writing style, my mind is just raging at what an annoying character he is. Basically, he's one of those dense protags that must have had a lobotomy to remove whatever part of the brain is in charge of picking up on social cues and signals.

The plot is entirely one-note, but in case anyone doesn't want that one note spoiled for... more>> them:
Spoiler

The first chapter starts with a quick exposition dump to hash out the setting, essentially that MC's family adopted this girl as his sister but treats her as a sort of Cinderella, dumping unwanted chores on her as if it's natural and treating her with a general sense of contempt. Then, out of nowhere, MC suddenly realized that he's been acting like kind of an ass this whole time so he decides to make amends with his sister, switching from abusing her to treating her better than most real life siblings treat each other practically over night, because fixing deeply ingrained negative behavior is as easy as flipping a switch, apparently. As it turns out though, the sister actually enjoyed doing all those chores for MC and either didn't notice or didn't care about the disdain, because she is absolutely devoted to and obsessed with MC, and gets scary whenever he tries to put any distance between them. The MC, perpetually aware that he had been a jerk to her before, refuses to interpret her clearly affectionate behavior as affection. Like, he notices it, he sees her showing affection and internally remarks on how her behavior sure looks like affection, but then he just rejects the obvious reality in front of his face because he thinks it's unlikely for someone who has been Cinderella'd for years to hold any goodwill towards their abusers... and that's it. That's the entire story in a nutshell. It's just multiple different versions of "MC tries to distance himself from sister because he thinks sister hates him; sister pushes back with yandere-ism; sister wins, clings to MC while MC is confused" over and over again. The location changes, the specific circumstances change, but that flow of events is constant in EVERY CHAPTER that I was able to force myself to read in hopes that something would change, that there might be some progress or character development of some kind. nothing changed.

[collapse]

I wouldn't even be this hard on this series if they had done anything to break up the one-note plot, if there was any element to distract away from the single, really bad thing they keep doing over and over, it would be fine. I've read other novels with dense protagonists, but while their denseness is often important to keep the sub-plots going, it's rarely the central focus of the main plot, and never the ONLY focus. <<less

In the hands of a better writer, this premise could have been interesting. Unfortunately, this is poorly written. The story is all exposition with no background built up. As the reader you know nothing about the world. The first chapter is almost impossible to follow with frequent unexpected point of view changes.
