“As promised, I’ve fixed your leg, so I’ll leave now.”

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say I’ve come this far for this moment.

I’ll certainly spend the rest of my days enjoying leisure in a quiet countryside and peacefully conclude my life.

“I won’t allow it.”

But, the empress won’t let me go!

Updated review, short version: 3 stars up to chapter 68, 2 stars for chapter 69 - 88.

This was a nice interesting slow romance story with a ticking clock and pleasant cast of characters, with the author being inconsistent in a few aspects. However, as of the recent chapters, this isn't the case.

1. The lifespans. Astria and Sena, the empress and doctor, both have less than 80 days to live at the start. The way Astria's lifespan is treated is fine, as it's illness related: if she follows Sena's treatment,... more>> it goes up and vice versa. It adds some nice drama as she won't follow the treatment to maintain her image (mostly) unless Sena is around which he doesn't want to be.

Sena's lifespan is the real issue here. It is presented as fixed, and can't go up by any means currently in the story. This is where inconsistencies come up. For detailed examples:
Spoiler

In chapter 57, he has 60 days left. He gets locked up in Chapter 59, and Astria is anxious about doing so but says he will be held until tomorrow. In chapter 60, we get a two-in-one, Sena's maid saying her majesty will be visiting today and Sena's jailer asking him to stop trying to escape as he hasn't slept in two days, this is Sena's 10th escape attempt, and Astria knows this isn't the first try when visiting. In chapter 61, it is early dawn and he has 59 days left, with the cliffhanger last chapter happening at least 5 hours ago after eating. Either an eventful day, or poor storytelling.

[collapse]

That may seem circumstantial, so here's another one:
Spoiler

In chapter 63, Astria kisses Sena to share a cure all potion. This takes place the same day as 61, so he still has 59 days left. Chapter 64 opens with Sena feeling better physically, but his lifespan specifically is still the same and he remarks Astria isn't bothered by yesterday's kiss. At this point, he has 59 days left. Chapter 65 opens with him have 68 days left the next day.

[collapse]

2. The character's age and how they act. Sena is 21. For Astria, she's 12 when she claimed the throne, years passed before she fell ill and she's had multiple doctors working years to weeks under her before execution upon failure so its more vague there. She is mentioned to be 21 once, but 12 is the more consistent age benchmark used for Astria and other inconsistencies makes the 21 number uncertain. These characters are late teens - early twenties, yet they act like 13-15. It's hard to think of them as adults when Sena eats a baguette with both hands, using the silent treatment as intense anger, is physically light and tossed around or lifted by the nape. Astria isn't safe from this either, eating nothing but pies and sweets for dinner, and thinking handholding = making babies. I get that Sena being extremely light and Astria being ignorant is caused by him being close to death and her having nobody to actually be a parent, but 95% of the time that isn't the purpose of this. It is very jarring as they will flip flop between this, and acting as mature an empress and doctor should be.
Spoiler

This becomes even stranger as after Astria learns about how babies are actually made, there is a lot more kissing and attempted interc**rse which leads to a question: Is the author trying to create an image of two (shorter) adults getting intimate, or an adult and a child doing it? Needless to say, this isn't a question that should need to be asked about the main pairing in a romance novel.

[collapse]

3. Relationship spoilers
Spoiler

Sena and Astria's relationship. This is more nitpicky, but the author can't decide what Sena feels for Astria. He repeatedly states Astria is unforgivable, he hates her, etc but has unrecognized romantic feelings for her. It doesn't feel like a tsundere thing either, as his distaste is stated after she treatens war, "babymaking", the livelihoods of others for his affection or just killing them for bumping into him. Very legitimate reasons to not like someone, and it's meant to be taken seriously but gets forgotten 2 chapters later.

Also, it's heavily implied in Chapter 61 that Astria gave him a hickey, yet when it happens again in Chapter 73, it's somehow the first time. So my faith in the continuity is shrinking. Nitpicky, even for this section, ik.

[collapse]

None matters compared to what this story becomes, as this is no longer a slow romance with a ticking clock. What it is now is
Spoiler

a bland adventure novel with two not-lovers, Sena and Astria, with a random numbers pretending to be Sena's lifespan.

This doesn't mean their relationship advanced naturally. What happened was Sena decided being forcibly kissed and almost SA'ed was enough to debate his feelings for Astria.

This, along with the author cutting 25 days from Sena's life (52 -> 27), makes it feel rushed as if they didn't know what to do with the plot. Sena decides to return to his hometown, but Astria comes along with him without complaint.

Sena himself mentions he will need the full month to make it, and with her, he very likely won't. Yet he does it because he wants to show Astria the world outside despite knowing how little time he has.

This is no longer a story about escape, or even one with a time limit on it. There is no character development that would make the romance semi-believable.
[collapse]

I tried to keep liking this, but this novel isn't worth the time. Only read this if if you're a fan of limited lifespan or yandere stories and stop at Chapter 68. <<less

Excerpt taken from my full review elsewhere.

Here’s a more accurate, quick synopsis. MC, a medical student from earth gets reborn in a fantasy world. From the virtue of his knowledge and healing abilities, he becomes the world’s best doctor. In a world where injuries are only healed by the priests and doctors don’t exist. Since his ability is so good, he gets kidnapped by the tyrant empress who wants him to heal her. But even when he is done she doesn’t let him leave.

I’ve read this novel till chapter 41,... more>> the translation is decent, but the names are actively hard to remember, it doesn’t help that the author names most of them with S, the MC’s name starts with S, the childhood friend’s name starts with S, the maid, the academy junior, even the capital city’s name starts with S, use something else author ffs.

Okay so, first things first, the trait you will notice immediately upon reading the first few chapters of the novel, the MC has this busybody doormat syndrome. Because he is supposed to be ‘kind’ according to the author, like a living saint, he will sacrifice himself to save others. He consistently gets kidnapped and threatened and forced into treating people except that he would have done it anyways. Also he is strong enough to resist if he really wanted to. Thing is, he doesn’t want to resist in the first place.

He is also very hypocritical towards the church. On the surface he says he hates the church because the church has objectively bad people in it. One of the plotlines is that the church hands him a vial of poison and say that he must poison the empress or else the people near him will be in danger, and immediately his maid gets kidnapped and assaulted, bruises everywhere etc. So the MC goes and chases down the kidnapper and instantly everyone including the author forgets about this vial of poison.

The MC doesn’t truly want the world to be a better place, if the injustice is happening out of his sight then he’s not bothered at all. He will sacrifice the many for the few in front of him so that they can continue making the world worse.

Anyways now is the point where I say some good points about the novel. But the flaw is simply so glaring that this is a pain to read. I can’t in good faith give this novel any higher a rating than 5 out of 10. There is a story with an overarching plot of the MC’s approaching death, there is an alright fantasy world tho nothing about the magic or how it works is explained at all yet, there are characters that are consistent and express their thoughts and ideals clearly, only that these ideals are basically tr*sh and bigoted. <<less

Its a light hearted fun story that is not purely one-dimensional - just enough plot and happenings to keep you engaged. There are small plot holes, but minor enough I've been able to overlook them without it affecting my enjoyment. If you are here to enjoy the characters and don't mind the plot as much, it will be a good book - a 4.5 / 5 novel in my opinion. Overall I found this to be very enjoyable and would recommend you give it a go too if you want... more>> a nice, light-hearted read with a little bit of heavier plot mixed in here and there ~ Despite the lower reviews (at this moment a 3.7, mostly due to those plot flaw nitpicks according to other reviews), I feel like this story was honestly a 4.5 for me, among the better I've read. <<less

Great story, its a wholesome slice of life and even if you know that is gonna be tragic, the characters have enough personality to ignore it long enough so when you remember that they are dying the melancholy just hits harder. 10/10

Unfortunately it is one of those story that has interesting set up and beginning but the more it unfolded itself the more it crumbles apart. The forced introduction of harem love interests and typical OP protag being versatile in many things does not help with the plot either. Once it reached chapter 100+ it wore my patience down enough that I have to drop it.

The characters are likeable and the setup neat.

Just two big problems.

The translation is really bad.

And the secret of the MC dying is dragged out waaaaaaaaaaaay too long.

Sure, some characters know but way too many don't.

The novel really should have switched to the ''everybody knows and is trying to save him'' phase but instead it drags everything out way too long.

The story is fine and looks cute, strong willed empress meets selfless hero, but it's kinda killed by a below average translation.

It's not awful overall, but it has awkward/wooden dialogues (at some point almost all of them), and for a story relying on character interactions, it makes it worse than what it could have been.

Random examples :

"It'll take a while." -> "It's taking a while."

"... Diagnosis is finished." -> "Alright, I finished my diagnosis."

--

'The effects seem to be there.' -> 'It seemed to have been effective.'

Pretty much nothing happens after he cures her legs. The protagonist is basically only led around by the rest of the characters unable to say or do anything against them because he's a weak little boy : (

There's not much character development or plot, it's a repetition of the protagonist being reluctant to do anything and failing miserably when he tries to escape.

It's also clear that this is a 300 - 500 chapters novel, so the author is gonna find a way of keeping the MC barely alive until a... more>> probably disappointing ending <<less

Started fine, but after a time became annoying, the protagonist is passive for everything,
Spoiler

his determination is as fragile as a child, his reactions are childish even in matters that he knows are serious, despite having strength he accepts being stuck in a situation where there are lives to be saved but he does nothing, this is completely frustrating, even more so when the one who arrests him should be the heroine.

Disappointing that this novel starts of good and then derail when the other side heroine lure the MC affection when all the development is from the empress. FMC took many chapter for that romantic experience then the hoe came in and snatch him for one chapter and the MC is just blissfully goes along with it for the rest of the novel, not minding his relationship (even though they're not together officially halfway through but with all that goal and mature talk like come on...)

It's just frustrating to read... more>> and the unnecessary drama that prolong the MC secret is just to drag the number chapter out.

If you just wanna read something as a passing time, don't mind the "harem" and the lawful good MC this is for you. Just don't expect a fleshout harem where all heroine has a character arc. <<less
