I genuinely wasn't expecting how good this is. The ML and FL have to be smart, powerful, and ruthless in order to survive. I really like the pacing, with momentum steadily building and the motivations of the many different factions slowly being revealed. And unlike stories where things become easier as they grow stronger, the more the FL and ML learn and grow, the more complex the choices they have to make become.

Since the description is a bit lacking, a brief intro: ... more>>
Spoiler

The story begins when the FL and ML are children. The FL is the daughter of a powerful noble family that serves as the biggest shield against demonic invasion from the west. The ML is the son of that family's most skilled knight, and is on path to becoming the FL's future guard. The ML has a very vague recollection of a past life where there were skyscrapers and more advanced technology, and an excellent recall of a story set ten years from their current time (and told from the perspective of a remarkably ignorant OGFL).

For the first dozen or so chapters, the kids are hiding out in a cabin, waiting for a demonic attack to subside. But things happen, they leave the cabin around chapter 17, and they have to fight for their survival. There's a four year time-skip at chapter 41 that takes them to their teenage years, where the bulk of the story then happens (up to where I've read, at least).

The FL is a clever tactician, both in warfare and in politics. And the ML is always striving to push the limits of his abilities as a sword master, becoming a truly fearsome opponent.

[collapse]

The solid (though co-dependent) relationship between the ML and FL is a big part of this story. They trust each other implicitly, fill in for each other's weaknesses, and become each other's strengths. They're both impressive in their own right, but the two of them together are phenomenal. Their relationship starts as one of loyalty and trust, then eventually steps into something more. And a welcome bit here for people who enjoy more mature stories (and a warning to those who don't want smut chapters) :
Spoiler

when they sleep together for the first time, the author didn't shy away from writing the actual smut (chapters 123-126).

[collapse]

For anyone who's worried by the fact that the story starts when they're children, I can confirm there's no grooming.

And some speculation on the ML:
Spoiler

I strongly suspect that the ML has always been exactly who his character is. I don't think this is a case of a different personality taking over a character. Rather than an isekai, it might be more of a regression after his soul took a bit of a break elsewhere. But it also isn't quite a regression story either, since what he knows isn't from his life, but from the narrative of the "OGFL, " who had been astoundingly ignorant of any of the things actually going on in this world.

[collapse]

Please note that the ML and FL are both utterly merciless. If you disapprove of characters that are determined to kill their enemies, then you'll be quite disappointed by these two leads. But if you enjoy stories that are written in the gray, then this is definitely a good read. <<less

Seems decent, I like the foreshadowing when the author's (very likely) killing off the supporting characters. The reading experience is a bit rushed, but still pleasant.

Minor gripes: Pilot and synopsis offered zero information on what kind of novel this would be. It's likely going to be a character work on the female lead, demanding niche, but not a reason to hide.
