After he transmigrated, Ye Shuo became the Ninth Prince of the Great Zhou Dynasty.

His mother was the most favoured Imperial Concubine, and his grandfather was the Duke Zhen who had massive troops under him; his birth immediately made him one of the three most popular candidates in fighting for the throne, even overshadowing the Crown Prince.
The most important thing was, even his mother shared the same desires in competing for the throne.

A favoured concubine + Military power + an Emperor in the prime of his life; at first glance, this kind of arrangement already meant its upcoming doom was near. Not only that, he still had eight more elder brothers above him filled with ambitions.
Eight older brothers, and each one of them outstanding on their own.

Ye Shuo thought about it for a while, then closed his eyes and kicked his feet; whoever wanted to ascend this throne should just do it.

So what if they became the Emperor? There wasn’t any Internet, not even electricity, as well as any games; even if he became the Emperor, the toilets still couldn’t flush on its own.
As he had no desires to fight for it, just like that, the royal Ninth Prince who was treasured like gold and jade grew up to be an infamous dandy.

They had to go to the study room before dawn? So that’s why the probability of children dying young was high; he definitely won’t go.
Being a subject first then only a person? Even if he is the Emperor, wasn’t he still his father?

At first, the Crown Prince and everyone else thought that this brother of theirs was just keeping a low profile while biding his time, only till that time when he was eight years old and still continued being carried on his father’s back to class did they finally realized, that child was done for.

In the past, the current Emperor was always threading over thin ice, carefully maintaining his position as a son for thirty years before he finally ascended the throne. After taking the throne, his sons now were just like the previous him during those years before; until the birth of the Ninth Prince, that was the first time the Emperor met a child like him.

But for some reason that even he didn’t know of, the Emperor was instead very invested in his young son; even if there were more children born after, he was still less attentive towards them than him.

More than ten years went by, conflicts started to arouse in court, feuds amongst brothers appeared, times were changing; and yet only Ye Shuo continued to remain the same.

Nobody could expect that, the new Emperor would pass away three years after he took the throne, only leaving behind his one and only child as heir. With painstaking efforts and great difficulty, Ye Shuo finally supported his brother’s only child to the throne; however, he only took away his attention for a moment and just like that, the child was gone.

The imperial clan didn’t have anyone left; and could only let this Imperial Uncle of him to inherit the throne.
During his time as the Emperor’s uncle, he was only twenty six years old.

Ye Shuo: “…”

The day of his enthronement, when they thought back of how the previous Ninth Prince and the current Ninth Imperial Uncle hadn’t even graduated from primary school; the ministers couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with grief, and almost made the Hall of Supreme Harmony overflown with tears.

Their Great Zhou Dynasty, was going to end.

Seeing how the Ninth Prince after becoming the Emperor continued with his out of sorts behaviour, everyone including the Imperial Tutor had already made preparations to be annexed by the two countries around them.

What they didn’t expect was after a year, the country was still stable.

Three years went by, the common people no longer suffered from any hunger.

After five years, natural disasters started to appear, Ye Shuo took the oppurtunity to send out troops, and then annihilated the two countries.

Looking at this unified territory before them, the courtiers couldn’t believe their eyes.

Who would’ve thought that in Ye Shuo’s previous life, he was actually a genius.

Hello, I'm the translator for this series :D

As a loyal NU reader for years, I've read my fair share of CN novels. But as a translator, I'm gonna try and give an my review of this story to tell why I chose this story to translate.

So extra info: this book is quite long, 300+ chapters and the main character starts from a baby and grows till his adulthood. If you ask me, the book is split into three main parts, the first being MC's time as a child, and then... more>> it'll be his time as a newly crowned prince (18 years old) and lastly would be his time as the Emperor.

But I'll still put a spoiler tag in care some of y'all don't wanna read it and jump straight to the reading.

Spoiler

This book is mainly more about how a modern person, filled with modernised thinking and knowledge of the 21st century transmigrates into someone from ancient times.

However, his identity is someone of the imperial family, and we all know how it is to grow up in the imperial harem. Even we know how bad the fights are from our shows, and that is exactly what our MC knows too. But our MC was blessed with a fortunate life during his first life and as someone who had experienced death before and is now given this chance of a second life, it feels like his rebirth. So why not, he could enjoy it his new life happily by avoiding the most obvious pit, fighting to be the next Emperor.

Having a modernised thinking greatly helps too; he's like a breath of fresh air in the harem, and slowly influencing each corner of the palace. He makes different types of relationships with each member of his new family, including his parents, brothers and also the people living inside the harem. Feels like a dream, isn't it? When he didn't turned out to be an obvious threat to his brothers or others by desiring the throne, you'll find out how amiable other people are.

However, as time started to go by, it wasn't just our MC that had gotten older. Even the emperor couldn't avoid time. The real motive why each one of them started to fight amongst each other, for the throne. While our MC had left the fight early on, he was still very close with some brothers. And they were all from the Imperial Clan, to get something meant you had to bet something of your own, for the throne, they were betting it all. No one could just leave the fight, each one of them had people to fight for; their mothers, wives and even their children. Trying to carelessly leave meant putting them in danger and none of them wanted to risk it. The fight has finally begun.

Through our MC's eyes, this whole fight was vicious but even he couldn't do anything to stop it. Everyone had their own path of life to walk on as they were the ones who chose it. His neutral position had protected him but as he watched the people he loved dying one after another, not even he could remain the same after this.

When he became the Emperor, he had more responsibilities to think about. His life, his family's, and now even his citizens. It was true that his influence has changed some people, but even he wasn't immune from getting influenced by their times in ancient china. His modern knowledge had made sure he knew of the consequences of being light hearted during these times. To protect his loved ones, perhaps he made some cruel decisions, but if he didn't, it would result in them getting eaten. In this dog eat dog world, no one was truly safe.

IMO, I wouldn't say this story is full of those scheming plans or strategies. Its sorta slice of life in the beginning? The calm before the storm to be more precise. Its more about how the MC starts to develop in character, during his time as a Prince then a crowned King before turning into the Emperor. And not only him, everyone that has crossed paths with him have also changed, whether it be good or bad, just like a butterfly changing time's course. Everyones walking their own way of life.

Spoiler

Secretly, the best part about the story in the interactions between him and his Father Emperor (if it was in modern times, his father would really need to take blood pressure pills everyday), him and his mom too (yes she does change, and she's really cute) and then with his other sibings (God I really do love each and every one of them) and also with the court ministers.

I absolutely loved this. I spent half the novel crying of laughter, and the other half crying of heartbreak.

Rather long, it follows the Ninth Prince on his unwilling journey to the throne. Although this story was kind of unrealistic, transmigration is an unrealistic thing in the first place. I think the overall story is good and the execution was great. I really liked the MC, there was a great balance between his kindness and modern sensibilities and the ruthlessness that he was called to. I got attached to a lot... more>> of the other characters too. A lot of the plotlines had great build up and foreshadowing. I could really feel Ye Shuo's unwillingness and the inevitability of these power-hungry brothers tearing this family apart. Somehow, this younger brother remained liked by all of them.

From the halcyon dream of childhood, to the successive tragedies of the second part, and finally the endeavors and stability of the third part, I really liked this story. If you want something a little more unique and well written you should give it a try. <<less

I love this novel so so much. The male lead is domineering and fun to read about. He is loyal, but not s*upid. Ruthless, but not unkind.

Relationships between each characters are the highlights of this novel. It is intriguing until the end.

The romance is also very very good and fun to read. The female lead is not s*upid, and a strong person, suitable for the male lead. The male lead is also not dumb and relies on his wife a lot, he is also not sexist, which is a plus.

love... more>> love love this one. I cried a lot, I laughed a lot. It's all good. I'd give 100/10 <<less

Honestly this story when he's growing up is fun. I disliked fights for succession, like a bunch of characters we see as cute kids end up killing each other. It was hard to read. Summary of story tells you its going to happen, but even though I tried to keep myself ready for it, I really grew to love those characters, especially 6th prince's son.

Unification stuff was boring in comparison.

It's okay. If I had read this earlier, I would most likely rate it higher but I had read something almost similar which makes me compare it even if I don't want to.

Well, based on the synopsis, you get the gist of the story. The only concern is how did he manage to become the emperor. Reading the summary, you will definitely know that there will be a lot of killings. It's just a matter of how and who will survive.

The MC really tried his best not to be the emperor. What breaks his heart break the most is the killing for inheretance. All of his brothers even nephew really wants to have power. The most heartbreaking for me is when he learned his nephew, YeJin died under the hands of his other nephew, Ye Xun whom he loved the most. The nephew whom he accompanied throughout childhood actually wanted to kill him also.

Nobody believed the MCs true resistance to become the emperor and as the story progress, they will realize that the only one who truly treated them without malice or agenda, is him. He was their son, brother, nephew and student. He didn't want to become the emperor.

The beginning of the story is okay. After I learned who the characters are, I skipped chapters already. There is some frustration around the ending. I feel like it's not well elaborated. The story focuses more on the nobles rather than commoners. There is no system. The MC is just really smart. <<less
