So.

I decided I needed to write a review since there weren't any even though 40+ chapters have been translated. I ask that you read until the end to understand both my rating and my bias. I will cover, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. However, I want to start by saying that the translator did a good job and while my rating is not high it was not because of the translation. Instead, I want to thank you for your hard work.

The Good

This novel sets the land speed record... more>> for the fastest marriage turnaround. It is a flash marriage just as advertised. (The titles on these stories can be misleading so that's a plus) The opening sequence is familiar to anybody who has read a Chinese novel before. Woman gets drugged, and then deals with the consequences (with a good addition)

The best part of this situation is...

Spoiler

The male lead not only comes to her rescue but doesn't sleep with her.

[collapse]

Overall, the MC is ok, but she has posture problems due to her lack of backbone white lotus behavior. The ML has facial paralysis, but is compassionate towards her. And when the author shows the ML's thoughts we can see his gooey caring side. As weird as it is, he is both my favorite and least favorite kind of ML. This is because he genuinely loves the MC, takes care of her mom without being a d*ck about it, and wants to help her stand up to her family and let her fight for herself. (I'll explain why he's also my least fav below)

Another unexpected good thing, the characters are equally fleshed out. Sometimes a novel goes in depth on the MC and the side characters are like paper dolls with their name written on their foreheads. But the world and its characters have about the same amount of detail put into them as the main cast so even if it isn't very deep, it doesn't feel lopsided.

The Bad

As I mentioned above, the MC is spineless. I understand that she had a terrible childhood, that's typical protagonist territory. But my beef with her is that she lets people walk all over her. Even when her fortune turns around and she can clear up misunderstandings, she doesn't talk about things. (But it is only fair to say that I have a strong preference for intelligent and independent characters)

This leads me to the problems with the ML. He obviously loves her. However, it is not obvious to anyone but the audience. Between his stiff face and some childhood misunderstanding, the MC is desperate for him to sleep with her for some sign that he actually cares. His kindness and generosity make it seem like he wants her to be a beard for him. (anybody not familiar with beards google beard-marriage-slang) He just doesn't seem to be romantic at all and can't express it at all. There's a difference between being clumsy at something, (which can be cute) and not being capable at all.

The Ugly

This may seem odd, but my least favorite character is not the limp rag MC, or the incapable ML, nor is it even the shoddy villains. It's Nanny Wu. In a culture where the rich have staff to raise their children, Nannies and the "Aunties" often fill a parental role in these CEO novels for the MC and ML. However she is used as a terrible mother in law type character in this case. And personally I feel that the ML isn't proactive in stopping her behavior. Either because she is his mother figure or even more so as an employee.

Basically, this novel only suffers for lack of editing. With a few small changes it could've been a novel that I would enjoy. As long as you can accept the flaws that I have pointed out, then I wish you happy reading. If you don't understand what I mean about editing tweaks then I recommend reading this novel and then reading this one:

This novel has a similar plot. A man whose mother was done dirty by her husband's family after marriage and was replaced by a mistress. He grows up surrounded with awful step family members who just want him gone but then use him in a business marriage.

How it is different:

Just like here the ML falls in love first, but he is eloquent and quickly seduces the MC
The MC is skilled in choosing his battles. He knows when to hold his tongue and when to face slap the house down
Unlike the bitterness found here, the fluff found within a stiff arranged marriage will give you a toothache
Finally, the author made good choices of which characters are villains and which ones are not instead of a dog-eat-dog there is no safe haven situation
Both of these novels are face slapping dog blood family dramas but I think you will find there is a difference between them. It is not the genre I am criticizing, only this example of it.

Thank you for reading until the end, have a nice day! <<less
