really boring and bland novel.

summary
the MC is a rogue cultivator as he can't cultivate normally since he doesn't have a spirit root.

this means that his only source of cultivation techniques and skills are from that girl.

but he learns how to cultivation the monster way and kills 99% of the characters in the novel that has a name!

MC's "genius"

he isn't a transmigrator or a reincarnated person yet he quickly learns and masters everything that is taught to him.

he never touched martial arts his whole life too and was a hard working scholar so he isn't dumb, yet he does dumb things every so often.

he courts death with every step he takes and everything he does is more or less "calculated" to make enemies or perhaps, he just doesn't care. we'll never know but the MC is always written to be smart but I would say that he doesn't actually think at all.

the more you read this, the more frustrated you will be because it just doesn't make sense how he is still alive and cannot be explained by any other thing besides plot armor.

later on he learns alchemy as well and just like you guess, he masters it quickly too! he also learns formations/array and everything and just like you guessed, he masters it quickly too!

there is no other explanation other than he is a "genius". I guess the other geniuses are not really geniuses after all huh?

also his "mysterious past" isn't really a mysterious since it's revealed at like, chapter 30 or so

Romance and c*ckroach enemies

also the ex-fiancee from the start eventually becomes an irritating c*ckroach who just won't die and constantly threatens the MC life.

she dies eventually but she is reincarnated and.... comes to threatens to MC AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he also eventually meets a princesses but she dies of old age wait missing him....

summary

i would give this 0/5 stars if I could

The novel is a Xianxia, so there is like in 'almost' any novel the issue of young masters with big backers that provoke the MC, threaten with killing him and his friends, only to find out he is a lunatic that will kill anyone who only even thought of killing him or his friends/relatives.

If you can get past that, now comes an issue shared by the other Xianxia/Xuanhuan 9 Star Hegemon Body Art. Because the MC killed many people, many influences were frightened by his talent. Their greed was also... more>> aroused. The MC spends the majority of the novel fleeing from enemies one or two realms over his own, always braving death. He was many times saved by the plot armor.

Now, for the good points: He grows fast. As fast as he courts death. He has an extremely good natural talent but was born without spirit root (that is when the classic benefactor comes in). The story is entertaining (I read 2237 chapters in one week while I usually take 2 or 3 weeks to finish a 1600/1700 chapter novel because I get tired of binge reading the same novel) and fast paced. The MC touches a little bit of everything in cultivation.

The novel also has a couple of elements similar to Stellar Transformation (rather minor for most, one is at the moment quite big and could evolve to be quite different or exactly the same as in Stellar Transformation), which were interesting to read about.

The universe building is good, extended, but not overly creative. The world building is also quite good for a Xianxia, with multiple clans in the mortal world (humans, and multiple non human species, which are separated from monster beasts which are all considered to be a big race). There is a 'big' plot in the mortal mainland, but it didn't feel that impacting.

One big bad point though would be that the author probably got tired from writing some things and decided to 'nerf' the MC for little to no reason when ascending to the immortal world. At least that is how it felt to me. (He destroyed an element I loved in the story : ()

Overall, the plot is almost non existent (pure progress incentivized by extremely powerful enemies chasing the MC) aside from the MC chasing after his benefactor.

Romance side, some people like the MC, a few things happen but there is no harem. Girls are introduced but are not automatically head over heels for the MC or braindead, like in some other novels.

This novel should be around a 3/5 objectively, but I'll give it 5 stars as I liked many many things about the novel. <<less

Ugh the first hundred chapters was great, I give it a 4 stars, but then it goes downhill really fast. Would have given this a 1, but on account of the first hundred, I give this a two stars.

Synopsis

Spoiler

The MC used to be a mortal with no spiritual root, but after offending a cultivator, a lady he saved randomly a couple of years prior transplanted a spiritual root, bones and taught him demon cultivation technique. Sounds good so far? But then he goes to a sect, learns regular cultivation techniques and the novel turns into copy paste Cn novel, with broken engagement, arrogant young masters, spirit beast, alchemy, mysterious ruins which seem to pop out weekly, and of course legendary cultivators which later on we find out only strong enough to become a shopkeeper in another area,

[collapse]

What I like:

Spoiler

- The writing is okay at first, but then each chapter became so short and rushed. The translation is good. The main idea of demonic cultivation, though not new still has enough freshness in it to be interesting.

[collapse]

What I don't like:

Spoiler

This novel is 60% fight scenes, 20% expositions, 10% boring cultivation, and 10% plot. Like seriously he just started cultivating and already we are bombarded with expositions about legendary sects, ancient wars, legendary cultivators, like yada yada yada. Dude, the MC is just a shrimp in a remote corner of the world he and the reader have no need to know what happened 10.000 years prior

The MC is arrogant beyond belief. In fact the whole story began with the MC refusing to kneel in front of a cultivator, or perhaps his ex, I'm not really clear. But dude, you're a mortal, in front of a demi god who can wipe out your whole family in a second, just f*cking kneel man. Is the lives of your whole clan means so little to you? Is your pride means so much more than your family?

He is a classic example of the Proud Sky Dragon, prideful MC who offended people left and right and only survives due to plot armor.

He's also blood thirsty. The author tried so hard to convince us otherwise, saying he has a gentle heart but with a bottom line, well bullshit. Yeah he only kills when he's angry, but the problem is he's angry All the time. Oh you're trying to cheat me? Die. You make my sister cry? Die. You dare to touch me? Die. You fart in my general direction? Die!

He meets a bunch of disciples from fiend sects then said that anyone from fiend sects must not be a good person, so he'll kill every one of them. And he almost did. But then he finds out that no, most of fiends sects are actually good they just practice different kind of daos, and most righteous sects are hypocrites. The MC basically said Oh okay, my bad, then start killing people from righteous sects for various reasons. He's a psychopath.

He kills everyone who offended him, which includes many young masters from many strong and ancient sects, until, predictably he became a target. And then he whines about why all these old/strong cultivators targeting him, his sect and his family unfairly when he's just a beginner cultivator. I mean dude, you kill people for bullying your sister, is it really weird that their families want to kill you when you kill their family/sect members?

He is also a greedy a**hole. One time, he and the elders from his sect found a herb garden and a precious fruit. After cleaning out the garden the elders persuade him to come back home to the sect, but he refused and wanted to wait for the magical fruit to ripen. The elders told him bluntly that they had had enough loot, and waiting there might be dangerous. But the MC persisted. So, long story short, he killed a bunch of young masters and hundreds more for the fruit, miraculously escaped with his life. But naturally the sects and families of his mu*der victims wont's just take it lying down. Instead they annihilate the MC's brother's kingdom, killing almost 30 millions of innocent people, HIS people.

Hope you enjoy your f*cking fruit, you greedy f*ck. Which BTW, only makes him slightly stronger. Yeah totally worth all those lives, huh.

Anyway, he survived after being saved by a bunch of mysterious monks from a mysterious temple, then learned Buddhism. This would have been great if it becomes a turning point for the MC, you know like "perhaps I should kill less and not being angry all the time like the Hulk." But no, he left the temple, discard the Buddhis robe and grew his hair and the lessons he drew was, "I didn't kill enough people so now I should do that."

f*ck this MC and this novel, seriously.

For a supposedly smart person, Su Zimo is incredibly s*upid. When you stop being a child, you learn to control your f*cking anger and ignore shit. Yes, that is part of the adult code. You can't keep making enemies everyf*ckingwhere because of bad behavior. 90% of his troubles were brought by him to himself. Just had to show off and f*cking kill. You can punish people without killing them, idiot. Also, all the family of the punished have nothing better to do than to send tons of people to fight... more>> because 'who dare look down at my this-and-that tribe?'. Un-FLippinf-believebly badly written! the author barely even tried. There is no plot whatsoever.

Unless of course you consider this a plot; goes somewhere, just in time for it to be attacked, goes somewhere else, just in time for a treasure to emerge, joins friends on mission, coincidentally turns out to be tragic mission, saves the day, goes home, home gets attacked, goes to forest, forest friend gets attacked by someone he and his friend can't beat, but was conveniently lazing about in front of his cave waiting for MC to arrive,... more>> fail to save the day, and coincidentally get saved and get a treasure, meets sister, sister gets attacked,...

Basically, he goes somewhere, and evil happens to happen just as he's there, he saves the day and gets treasure.

It happens again, and again, and again, ad infinitum.

The plot is so bad I would honestly prefer to read invisible dragon. At least that tragedy has some unexpected twists. <<less

This is very similar to Legend of the Great Sage, but worse in every aspect. Like most Xianxia novels, I enjoyed the beginning, however, as soon as MC joined an immortal sect, this becomes average cliched at every stage. This is slightly better than most xianxia novels, but eventually, it falls off and becomes repetitive like most xianxia novels do.

What I liked about this novel: the demonic cultivation aspect and MC spending time with his master. MC training and learning new techniques. MC spending time with spirit animals and caring... more>> for them.

Of course he meets up with his master again pretty late in the novel
Spoiler

ch 1792

[collapse]

What I disliked about this novel:

1) Decision making. Like classic xianxia novels, MC dives first into trouble without any plans and only survives thanks to plot armor. Some examples with mild spoilers:

Spoiler

MC going into an ancient inheritance battle with geniuses from super sects all fighting, what does he do? Instead of waiting for everyone to fight, he starts fighting against one person until they realize he is strong and literally every single genius starts fighting him at the same time. Even ppl who were fighting amongst each other stop their fight and attack him. Even ppl from sects that are mortal enemies with each other stop their fight and attack MC together. He kills some geniuses so the strong old ppl attack him and he is saved thanks to plot armor inheritance.

Strong enemy race attack MCs sect because MC pissed them off. Other immortal sects join in even though they are supposed to be enemies with said race because MC pissed them off. The emperor of said nation with all these sects is supposed to help MC but he refuses cuz he scared of the race. What does MC do? He fights enemy race with no real plan until he is about to die and then some random person from his sect a thousand yrs ago comes and saves MCs sect.

An ancient herb is about to bloom, geniuses and super strong people are gathering. MC's friends warn him not to do it, MC says 'don't worry if I don't believe I can get it, I won't try for it.' He even says that nascent soul ppl might arrive (he is currently early golden core) and if so, he would die. What does he do? As soon as it ripes, he walks and is the first person to pick up the fruit and starts fighting again against literally thousands of people at once. Then the old nascent soul arrives, exposes his real identity through some magic bs, he is crippled and escapes with his life thanks to plot amour dragon site.

[collapse]

For once, I just wanna see our MC go 'nah bro I don't need to head to [dangerous place] for [random treasure/inheritance/herb] because I am already a genius with super strong demonic and immortal powers. I already am a genius at weapon refining and have no problems with money, there is literally no reason to risk my life.' But I guess if that happened, author wouldn't know how to progress his story.

2) The random people in the crowds. Every single fight in this novel is spectated by some random ppl. Every fight will have some ppl in the middle of a fight saying things like "MC is so pitiful, he is genius yet he is going to die against [random genius]. Its his own fault for picking a fight', or 'how dare he fight [random genius] with such weak cultivation' or after killing said genius 'wow, MC is so strong, but so pitiful as the [random sect] will avenge their dead disciple'

Not only that, almost every fight would have sayings like MCs attack was so powerful it killed some of the random bystanders or MC dodged random attack and the attack killed the bystanders or MC roared and all the surrounding weaker cultivators exploded into mist. Who are these random ppl that die at the sidelines of every fight and why do ppl keeping watching fights if things like this occur.

3) Everyone is either with MC or against MC, there is no middle ground. Anyone in the same sect as MC but against him is clearly a traitor to said sect.

Anytime MC joins a group and says someone is suspicious, even if that person has been with that group for years, there is 100% chance of that person betraying the group.

Anytime MC is with a group and enters a dangerous ground and MC says don't go there, its dangerous, they will 100% refuse and go there anyways and die. Then ppl will lament and say 'why didn't I listen to MC' (exact same thing has happened 3 times so far)

Everyone who is friendly with MC is weak as f*ck and 90% of the time, they will be followed by a stronger arrogant person who is not nice to MC.

Almost every interaction with women so far has been MC saving them which proceeds to lead to more trouble (happened 3 times already).
Spoiler

MC saves a princess --> imperial guard sees MC friendly with princess and tries to kill him. MC saves demoness girl --> becomes enemies with all of the fiend sects. MC saves demoness girl again --> becomes enemies with a buddhist sect.

[collapse]

Overall, if you want a better version of this novel, go read Legend of the Great Sage. <<less

Unyielding mc's are best mc's no one will make me change my mind, you can call it generic, courting death, etc. These are the type of characters this emperor absolutely loves.

The novel is very similar to NSHBA as well, though this emperor would say that ESK has a better first 100 chapters And even better first 200 chapters.

Though, I'm not super sure when the orthodox vs unorthodox war and the jiuli realm exactly happen in NSHBA, but I believe its like 180-400+ ish which I would personally consider better than... more>> ESK, though like 350+ or so for ESK doesn't fall far behind.

Now the question is : will this novel remain as good later or will it regress like other novels of the type? Hopefully it just gets better so this emperor could add it in my tierlist. But I feel like it's going to be pretty hard for ESK to top NSHBA, it has some really good arcs and side characters. In side characters department NSHBA demolishes it, MC department LC is unmatched, but SZ doesn't fall too far from the tree he is like 25% of the way there.

But so far the first 500 chapters of ESK match the first 500 chapters of NSHBA.

Spoiler

1300 chapters deep into Eternal Sacred King. This is an amazing novel, though I will have to say it's a hit or miss whether you will like it, it naturally depends on your taste. The novel starts pretty generic, MC was a renowned scholar in a Mortal Kingdom, but one day Immortals come and they recruit two people, one of them being his fiance and another being a criminal he arrested once. The immortal makes everyone kneel but our MC does not want to kneel, so the Immortal wants to kill him but then changes his mind and tells everyone to treat him as the worst scum if anyone treats him good they are going to face the wrath of the immortals etc. (In reality these guys were no immortals, but simply cultivators. Mortals call all cultivators Immortals) Our MC has no spirit root so he cant cultivate but because of his good deeds in the past the wheel of fate has not forsaken him. One of the people he saved was a Mighty Figure and this figure waited 3 years so far in the story to see how to repay his benefactor but now finally the moment came. The Figure imparted him a demonic cultivation technique which does not need a spirit root to allow him to take fate in his own hands. One thing leads to another and our MC finally becomes a strong powerhouse capable of maching qi condensation experts. Our MC then later finds out about his past, his father, his brothers deeds, his enemies and he decides to go on a revenge adventure. Unexpectedly the revenge arc ends quite fast and after that our MC meets up with the Mighty Figure again. Before leaving the mighty figure leaves him with three gifts which we discover later when he progresses in cultivation. Our MC then joins one of the 8 sects of the mortal region and start his path of cultivation. This is simply the first 100+ so chapters of the novel. And it covers him from a mortal demonic cultivator with no spirit all the way to a qi condensation cultivator with a spirit root.

[collapse]

This is simply the opening of the novel, the novel gets way better the more you read. His foundation establishment and golden core realms parts of the novel are quite fun to read as he competes with geniuses in these dimensions and becomes a well known genius. The MC makes an infinite amount of enemies along the novel, like pretty much every powerhouse sect in the world. Mainly because he kills every genius that courts death but also because he is a demonic cultivator so they have an excuse. Nascent Soul had some ups and downs but it ends with him becoming a Void Reversion and everything becoming better. Once he becomes a Void Reversion the world opens up a bit more and the MC starts cultivation towards his path and goals of cultivation (which is allowing every being to cultivate). Eventually he becomes a Dharma Characteristic and at this point he is finally himself a Mighty Figure as he can kill easily Experts at the next rank of cultivation which is Conjoint Body aka Mighty Figures. The moment he becomes Half-Ancestor is already late-game Mortal World and the legendary fights are happening.

Final thoughts after fully reading the novel:

The novel was pretty good overall, just a little bit too slow paced for my liking in the higher world. If you read novels like NSHBA, Emperors Domination, Chaotic Sword God etc. It's like that, it's the unyielding, fighting against the heavens, rather break than bend main character. The plot of the series is very simple, the MC doesn't want to kneel against anyone, including the heavens. Doesn't matter if he will die, get tortured etc. He will not kneel. That's because of his unyielding spirit, the novel legit starts off with an 'immortal' forcing him to kneel and him a mortal without the ability to cultivate not wanting to kneel. Our main character here seems to be the only good person in the series for a long time. There is truly not many truly good hearted characters in this novel, many are straight up evil, others are neutral, others only draw the line at their sect etc. But our main character here is a person with a heart of gold, he has never treated people below his level with contempt, and he wanted to help all living beings. This is a long running goal in this series, helping all living beings and fighting against people who abuse the weak. Practically all top tier experts in this series see people as ants besides MC inner circle. The MC is overpowered the entire series in the same cultivation rank and does surmount realms, but he does get suppressed by way higher rank people from time to time. Our MC here does suffer his fair share of setbacks he doesn't have a smooth cultivation experience from start to finish but he does pull through every time. (These are not light setbacks either.) I liked this novel a lot but the higher world was too slow paced in my opinion. Author proved in the last 200 chapters that he does know how to write a novel in a low amount of chapters without making it feel rushed. Unfortunately it did regress in the higher world in my opinion.. And it definitly failed my hopeful expectations. (Which were as I said in my initial comment being on par with NSHBA and taking a spot in my tierlist) Doesn't mean it was bad, if this is one of your first novel of the type you would rate it way higher than I did. Lower World was 9/10. Higher World was 7/10. Greater World was 7/10. (Overall 7/10) Better than 90% of novels of this type though, compared to those its a solid 9/10 but only in comparison. <<less

This novel is full of cliches but it's bad, really bad, I mean, REALLY REALLY bad, and the reason is very simple: everyone is DUMB.

The NPCS/audience: omg so what if you are so strong you are going to die 100% if you do that.

  • does that.
"omg so what if you are so strong you are going to die 100% if you do that. "
  • does that.
"omg so what if you are so strong you are going to die 100% if you do that. " That's all I read until now.

Furthermore, his enemies are... more>> so dumb that's something incredible, imagine that everyone wants to kill a guy in a special realm, he's very strong, everyone knows, then, the strongest heritage appears, no one can see him, but everyone can see a NEW GUY close to the mc's friend, and holy, this guy is actually strong, uses a blade just like MC and has a strong body just like MC? But he doesn't looks like MC so yeah, not him. I mean, really?

And now about our MC, he just doesn't care for anything, he will kill every single guy that fights him, even if they are from power much stronger than anyone he knows. It would not be that bad if he just keeps being saved again and again by the plot, its like 'I'll not bow to anyone and whoever wants to kill me, I'll kill before'. The problem is the constant plot saving him from fights he would die, annoying.

Btw, its funny that no one kills those around him, imagine killing thousands of disciples of a bunch of sects that are very resentful and no ones care about your family lol <<less

It started off decently, albeit a bit generic. It goes downhill quickly as none of the main character's decisions make sense or is well thought out. The cultivation becomes generic, the fights become generic and even the story telling becomes generic. It's just the same monotonous string of fights where everyone underestimates him and thinks he's dead, only for him to asspull a victory out of defeat. There're no human emotions and everyone is just robotic. The writing/translation quality is also subpar. Don't read. It's a complete waste of time.... more>> From what I've seen in future chapters, it gets even worse. <<less

This is one of the most enjoyable xianxia novels I've read this year. I really like MC - he isn't disgusting unlike many MC in recent novels and doesn't act too arrogant. Side characters are very likeable.

Updated: later in the story MC goes full bambino idiotto. What a disappointment.

I give this one a 4/5. MC is smart (more on this in a moment as many people seem like they didn’t read it) and I like the side characters. Story is fun but it’s not some amazing piece of literature.

for his intellect people keep reviewing “he’s dumb” “why can’t he kneel” “why is he like this”

first time he dosnt kneel it’s for not believing in immortals.

Die Yu explains during his first training that his MIND BECOMES MORE DEMONIC AS HE PROGRESSES. So yes, he is smart and quick witted.... more>> But there is a reason well established that explain his rash actions. That later start to get rectified. But his Demonic cultivation makes him a tad crazy. <<less

I don't know much about writing reviews but I am a very picky reader and this novel somehow kept me interested.

Characters are well built and world unfolds slowly. The only thing I want to complain is his cultivation speed, it's fckin slow. There are no romance aspects, he friendzones them.

It is still a definitely xianxia, so fights over petty things is common.

You can read it if you don't have anything else to read. I can only say it is a above average read and won't bore you once you pass... more>> 300ish chapters. <<less

This is my first time writing a review, so I might leave a lot of details out that might affect your decision of wanting to read this book, but I'm sure other reviews will cover things I've left out.

I'll start with the pros first since there are quite a lot of things that I like that this novel does.

  • For starters, there aren't any huge info dumps that'll leave you with a headache or make you want to skip paragraphs. The most you'll get from anything that can really qualify as an "info dump" are the locations of the sects, countries, and continents but that's easily ignorable.
  • The fight scenes are greatly described and the movements of the MC are easily visualized.
  • The personality of the MC is straightforward and he is not hypocritical.
    Spoiler

The only thing hypocritical is the MC thinking all fiend sects are heartless killers, but isn't really a huge turn-off because his perception changes after a few chapters of him declaring he would "kill al fiend sect members."

    [collapse]
  • MC gets along with spirit beasts and doesn't have a huge superiority complex about him being above spirit/fiend beasts
  • This can be a con or a pro to some people but while the MC obviously has affection for some people, he understands that his path has no room for love or dao companions given his circumstances. If you are reading for romance on this one you will be disappointed on that end.
Now for the cons

  • I am sure most of the other reviews will mention this, but the MC's cultivation speed is abysmally slow. I am 600 chapters in and he has only passed foundation establishment at around 550.
    Spoiler

There are nine major realms that are revealed at this point in time. They are respectively: qi condensation, foundation establishment, golden core, nascent soul, void reversion, dharmic characteristic, cojoint body realm, ancestor realm, and finally crossing tribulation realm. This is 600 chapters in and the MC is only at the golden core realm. If you're an avid Xianxia reader then you already know the formula of leaving the main world and stepping into the universe of cultivation after passing the tribulation. I see the MC getting nascent soul at maybe 900 chapters in with the speed that this is going. This means that even with the 1700 or so chapters released, the MC will still be on the small stage in his own world unless something drastic happens

    [collapse]
  • There are so many battle royales and fights that happen that while I like how they are described, it feels like it is dampening the progression of the story

The first few hundred chapters are good but it went bad towards the 1000’s chapters

my guess is that the authors tries to throw any thoughts into the novel and not keeping the core theme, and as a reader, that really disappointed me, although I haven’t finished reading it yet, if the rest of the novel isn’t improving I may not eat any other works of the same author,

I will still give it 2/5

You should try it, this novel isn't the best I've ever read but it's really good. All the enemies aren't s*upid and the protagonist shows a really good growth.

Don't be disappointed by the early stage of the story, try it, it really worth it.

(To be fair I should rate it 4/5 but I want to reduce the low rates on this one)

Great MC who has real empathy towards sentient beasts, most MC in Chinese novels just kill sentient beasts like a psychopath. MC don't have spirit root so he have to cultivate the demonic path. I very much like his ultimate goal which is to create a cultivation for mortals that don't have spirit roots.
