Really good high fantasy series. At first its a little bit awkward because the protagonist is always anxious and insecure in her identity due to her memories of her past life as an ojisan, but that initial awkwardness is pretty much over and done with after the first 100 chapters. During which, She slowly grows into her current identity as a girl, and eventually, stops feeling uncomfortable in her own skin. After that, it's just good high fantasy action with a little bit of eroticism mixed in for good measure.... more>> (Don't worry it never goes full 18+, though the characters do canonically have s*x, just off-screen). And lots of yuri. Honestly speaking though, I'm a little bit put-off by the tendency towards harem in this novel, especially because the MC is in a pretty serious relationship for most of the series. I love the side characters, I really do, but I also really love the main girls' relationship, so I'm always a bit torn when the MC wavers.

*Sigh* Maybe I wouldn't feel so bad about it, if it was written in a way so that the characters hadn't established such a serious relationship so early on, (first 200 chapters), and instead kept it more ambiguous as most harem novels tend to do. Or if the main couple had started their relationship with the premise that there would be more girls joining in later. In this case, it sometimes kind of almost feels like cheating. Simply put: It's nice when we get a funny lucky-pe*vert moment with the other girls, but I don't wanna see my Elhayme-chan cry and feel legitimately guilty afterwards.

One more thing to note: there is a war slowly brewing in the background that eventually comes to the forefront as the series goes on, so there's lots of dramatic tension as the characters go off to the front, and we don't know if they'll come back alive or not. While this is a fantasy world, both sides of the war are very much working on improving their technologies/techniques, and neither side is weak in comparison to the other, so the risk of death is very real. On the other hand, normal fantasy monsters are just fodder, unless they group up. <<less

It had a decently promising start, though I'd never accuse this novel of being a literary masterpiece. It was around chapter 34 that this went to shit.

Spoiler

The author seems to have become confused at this point, thinking that this was a shounen action novel, and doing a completely unnecessary and uninteresting tournament arc that lasted for over 20 chapters. Yuri novels generally don't have this trope, and now we know why, because it absolutely destroys the story.

[collapse]

I ended up dropping this the chapter after the tournament arc ended, because by that point, I'd just lost any interest. After reading the first few chapters of the tourney and being thoroughly disappointed, I basically just resorted to briefly glancing at the page, and if I saw an obviously tournament related title, I didn't even read the chapter.

If you're into yuri, don't read this. If you're into tournament arcs, still don't read this. The author doesn't know what he wants this story to be, and I don't know who the target audience is anymore, or if there even is one. <<less
