The best way I can describe it is that it's like a power fantasy version of LotM; the main character is smart, and the story is fun to read for a while but I couldn't finish despite best efforts because the lack of tension became too obvious. Dorothy is just incredibly overpowered and the longer you go the blander everything feels.

Spoiler

She's able to turn contamination (the story's main power limiter) into spiritual power and trade knowledge for spells/skills from other games with her system. She doesn't even lose the knowledge she traded away, can transfer skills to her helpers to make them overpowered too, and *can cleanse her followers of contamination*. As if that wasn't enough MC uniqueness, she also gets access to the super rare once in a generation revelation pathway which literally gives her the powers of all the revelation secondary spirituality sequences, so by the end of the story she has 4x the amount of sequence powers along with her system powers.

[collapse]

The story is also just so formulaic and her enemies are all s*upid. Dorothy's shenanigans are fun and her plans are thorough but all she fights are cults, none of which have been able to meaningfully counter her in any way. She has fought a small army worth of cultists by now and apparently only a single major base of this spider cult has had any measures against the oh so masterful strategy of spying via small animal puppet. This plus Dorothy's protagonist power has the plot feeling like a xianxia with how often she kills people above her realm, and the story is robbed of any conceivable horror for it.

Though the dialogue is pretty good, as you go on the characters also begin feeling super bland, compounded by the fact they kind of start reusing the same gags. Like the rest of the story, they're fun at first but they either never develop or develop in very predictable ways. Honestly, my favorite character was

Spoiler

the Edrick doll that Dorothy occasionally puppets to aura farm and fill out the ranks of her fake cult, watching her play detective with him is very fun.

[collapse]

This might just be a me problem but I really dislike how binary the pathways feel morally. Chalice primaries being evil I can mostly accept since there's not many ways to spin cannibalism, but I'm pretty sure so far every cultist has had chalice or shadow mixed in somewhere which is bs, and ofc any revelation beyonder needs to be a good guy because revelation is the nice enlightening life and dream pathway. Just wish there was a bit more creativity in how beyonders gather spirituality since it's basically all either super evil or completely peaceful.

Despite all my complaining, the actual writing quality is *good*, especially compared to the other stuff here, but I cannot get myself attached to this story and it's admittedly been a while since I dropped it so most of the specific moments I remember are the ones I didn't enjoy. <<less

This is an enjoyable read, especially for those who like mystic or lovecraftian adjacent works. If you played Book of Hours or Cultist Simulator you will experience a familiar setting with a satisfying plot progression.

Dorothy is a weird main character. It is hard to pin down her personality, even though her goals are always clear, albeit not driving the story forward. It is often times the case that she sets up a plot point, then reacts to it's development. The story certainly doesn't put her in a position to make... more>> choices that would flesh out her character, which is a bit of a shame.

Overall, despite the Victorian mystical setting, the plot heavily resembles a cultivation novel. The main character punches above her weight, the opponent has a mentor/master who is interested in vengeance, and Dorothy frequently finds windfall and opportunities amid obstacles.

The deceptions and false image of the heroine as a member of a powerful secret organisation are definitely this story highlights.

Dorothy's Forbidden grimoire doesn't quite stick the landing. Yet I find long running stories that actually end in any way at all to be a rarity of this genre. Therefore, although the later parts of the book have significant issues of pacing and clarity, they do not sour the actions and chapters that led up to them, and conclude the story in a satisfying way that leaves no grievances with me.

It is nice that the books themselves do play a role in this story, even as bits of lore and exposition. They provide plenty of setups and red herrings which makes their texts relevant (some more than others) to the story. <<less

This is an obvious clone of Lord of The Mysteries, which is a good thing. This is easily the closest to the original by far in style and storyline. To the point of shamelessness, but I still like it. We need more stories written like this, even if you aren't as capable of an author, LOTM does so many things right, you can screw up quite a few other things and still be fine.

The biggest difference, is that this author is a sellout. The original author of TLOM avoided using... more>> any gimmicks in his story, this author has filled the story with gimmicks.

The author has a really annoying dependance on coincidence. Especially during the first 50 chapters. If TLOM used Klein's incredible intelligence to solve mysteries, "Dorothy's Forbidden Grimoire" uses random coincidences to solve them. It's lazy, but I can bring myself to ignore it.

Beyond this, everything is minor.

Beyond that, while the story is trying desperately to immitate TLOM, the story-arcs are often awkward by comparison.

TLOM had an incredibly rich and mysterious world and every chapter you'd spend peeling back another layer of mystery. This however, is an author that's writing by the seat of his pants. <<less

A lot of people say it is like LOTM, but in my eyes, surprisingly, it is not. While it world following mediavel steam punk like LOTM, it is, frankly, alot lighter than LOTM. I feel this is more like story 'I'm Not Demon Lords Lackey' especially in the luck department.

In this story, the author tell the story or information more from people speaking to other people. It is lacking descriptions, which make the subtle dark atmosphere or even alot of other (even any) feelings in the story decrease or even... more>> hard to be felt by readers. It also lacking the tight rope walk that LOTM have that shows to the readers how thin the line between sanity and insanity that exist.

Simple example is, we know that MC care about her brother, but to be frank, their relationship and MC's relationship with other peoples feels very superficial. It is like, (maybe it is just me), we know MC care about her brother, the interactions is like... have no depth? Like so far I only see MC protecting her brother once, that is because he is her brother? Even their nagging conversation is lacking in mc'respon... Ugh, I have hard time to describe it.... Like, where is the family love? It is like the interaction in the story is only when necessary. Like that. Or maybe because I read too much slice of life that have more things like that? To be frank, the character feel like 2D.

The MC's ability itself is too overpowered. Like her ability to auto filter pollution, or even the 'system' (as I am still too early to know the spoiler) that exist and give her ability, they make the this story lacking in tension (for me).

The most problematic things is, there is no 'despair' that should exist in dark fantasy story. In LOTM, the further reader read, the more they are able to feel the subtle despair that exist and keep pressing. Even, Klein, as MC itself, can be seen walking a tight rope between sanity and insanity. The struggles to stay sane, to keep walking a dark path while knowing that you are losing yourself. Even the gentle weak hope that shine because the MC's struggles to ensure that hope still exist. It is not felt at all...

I think I will read this as a light/adventure story rather than horror/action/thriller story.

Privately, I hope most of people not reading it because of fanservice. Especially as MC, and her team is all female with good look.

In term of horror, there is no horror at all, the atmosphere is simply not there. <<less

Absolute cinema. Full recommendation.

The premise and world-setting are reminiscent of Lord of the Mysteries. Mystical artifacts, beyonder sequences, and gruesome deaths. This story has it all. The iconic sense of mystery as well as the tantalizing foreshadowing lay the foundation for a story that shapes up to be a hidden gem.

The adaptability of the transmigrated main character is surprisingly fast, perhaps unbelievably so. The pace is brisk, and the main character advances quite fast. And while this may be a testament to to how much I enjoyed the story, I... more>> couldn't help but wish for a more slow-paced and thorough world-building.

Overall, a promising start to a story with tons of growth potential. A rare delight in the vast ocean of mediocrity. <<less

Edit:

Finally able to read the whole novel.

Its obviously really similar to Lord of The Mysteries, from victorian era steam age, its magic system, etc. There are many differences, and I don't know if they're also similar to other stories but I enjoyed it thoroughly.

... more>> MC is cute, smart, funny strong, every important side characters are pretty fleshed out and alright, not terrible and I like it, its plot is very tiring to follow with no proper pacing.

Like I said before this edit, this novel heavily rely on coincidences, it's kinda lazy, annoying, and tiring to read, but hey at least author made some effort to incorporate and explain it why later in the story.

The whole world building is alright, I mean it's pretty much earth with a few modification with the nature of the novel, they can be seen as boring but I personally doesnt have any problem with it and rather interested throughout its story.

The plot and mysteries while rather tiring to follow its also really good when it comes battle and final conclusion, in fact I like it better here than LoTM ending. The fight is great, the big fight however is different story, I think its okay for the most part its just the nature of power level make it hard to enjoy for me, the final fight though I really like it in a sense.

Some things I like in this novel is how Dorothy bond with other characters normally without using facade all the time and she's never been alone, always helping and being helped by others, the ending like I said is good and probably the first novel I read that explain the mysterious system and include it to the plot, I also like the epilog showing every characters how they gonna live their lives later and overall happy ending.

All in all its solid 8.5 for me.

Ps: 200-300 last chapters are soo damn long to the point it took me 15-20 mins to read a single chapter, some even took 30 minutes, outrageous hahaha.

Book had a very good start, however halfway down it became tedious to read as the arcs became so formulaic where: MC needs something ->another cult is also after it->MC does her information gathering shenanigans ->MC outsmarts the enemies->MC wins (sometimes with a borrowed knife), then rinse and repeat.

Other than that, I absolutely love the story and its characters, the lore was good and the mysteries surrounding the world and it's gods were intriguing overall good story, if not for the very repeated and formulaic storytelling.

It starts off well and has the Lord of the Mysteries feeling at first but it lacks the foreshadowing or the precarious atmosphere. Everything just fell into place just like what the MC planned and the villains/lackeys weren't exactly smart.

MC's power prevents her from the side affect of the whole magic system, not exactly a good thing but well, the MC needs some leverage I suppose. Whatever tools or mystical knowledges the character acquired this chapter will almost be used to counter an enemy's scheme within the next few chapters... more>> so there are no setup and you can more or less just guess what will happen next.

It's still good enough for a light reading though. <<less

I really like this one. The MC takes over the body of a recently deceased girl and has to survive with her wits and a few special abilities, while trying to find out the secrets of the new world. This alone would be pretty generic, but the way the MC is written is really good, the story is engaging and the setting is phenomenal.

First about the MC. She's a clever protagonists that's rather weak physically, who has a few special abilities, but still has to gather information, make intelligent decisions... more>> and forms well thought out plans in order to succeed. Nothing too special, but what sets this above many novels with the same protag archetype, is that she isn't unbelievably intelligent, and doesn't know things she shouldn't. She has to make guesses about the world, many of which are revealed to be only half right, and then correct herself later.

Second about the story. Its solid. Its decently paced, the character's (including the villains) aren't braindead, the actions well written and its just a really good time overall.

Lastly the best aspect of this story is probably the setting. Its basically Victorian England, with the weaponry, technology and underlying mysticism from this era. The difference being that the secret societies actually have varying supernatural abilities depending on their type, with the power system itself is implemented really well.

As for the cons, the MC does get a little too much plot armor at times, like learning to use an ability at the right moment, and her special ability is a little too strong, but this isn't enough to seriously detract from the novel. <<less

An average of the best ones. An average one among masterpieces.

Foreshadowing and secrets were cool. Definitely not a braaindeaad novel. But they were too scattered. Author foreshadows a scheme's start. And then after hundreds of chapters it suddenly happends and saves the day. You skipped the middle parts so much that it becomes meaningless

Aside from that. Loved it and was sad that it ended. One of the best ones, tho an average among them.

The World is built really well and it's not done as just an info dump that is very common, this highlights how the world is gradually explored by the MC. This would be an example I would use of novel that is written nearly perfectly. The plot includes easy to resolve problems, difficult to resolve problems, and impossible to resolve problems, which are weaved together in a manner that ensures there is always satisfying reward, sufficient hurdles to overcome, and an imperfect main character who still fails occasionally this makes... more>> the plot very gripping and keeps you wanting to read. These flaws keep the story really interesting and engaging because you never know how the MC will resolve, and unwittingly fail in some way, and you will keep learning more about the world along the plot in a way that feels organic.

All the characters are quite well written and deep, and even villains have their own depth and backstory. The best part is that none of the characters are perfect, they have their flaws, which truly make them stand out, a heretic, a perfectionist who rarely achieves perfection, vanity obsessed girl, an average guy who is struggling with his surroundings and lies to his family just to name few.

HOWEVER it feels like the author lost the plot as the chapters keep ongoing. This is truly present into the last 2 arcs, and is characterized by following cons.

The greatest issue is the ongoing power inflation. The MC continuously gets stronger, her allies more or less keep pace (but not all of them). This then mandates that the enemies also have to be stronger until she is fighting against gods, as a weak mortal. Because of this the stakes go from getting beaten > to getting killed > to cities getting killed > to continents getting killed > to the entire world being destroyed and ens*aved.

The earlier con then ties to the power difference cliche.

The big villains are always stronger than our MC, generally one level higher. When the power levels are lower, it makes sense that minor failures or defeats aren't the end of the world. However as the power inflates, eventually it just becomes bunch of bullshit, it breaks the immersion in the story and you can't help but to think there is no more suspense because the only way for the MC to win is a bullsh*t Deus ex machina which the author had previously avoided masterfully.

The time cliche.

As the plot keeps going forth, you eventually realize that every time the MC stumbled upon something, it has been in meticulous preparation until right before the MC started interacting with it. There are two major plot points that are exempt from it. But whenever you see it, it further breaks the immersion. The Prime example of this is the arc that is ongoing around ch 750, this was about to start as soon as the MC stumbled upon it, as if the MC needed a target to kill a god for plot.

Forgotten interesting plot devices:

The author seems to keep forgetting some exceedingly interesting plot devices that have been previously introduced. Prime examples; her system, powerful artifacts she has acquired, her own powers. When they are called upon later, it's as if the author needed some way to resolve a problem and just checked an answer sheet.

Spoiler

Her system. It has incredible potential in introducing otherworldly knowledge, like dragon shouts. However for some reason this keeps getting buried beyond its ability to connect MC to others telepathically.

The resurrecting chalice sword, there are plenty of times it could be used, but for most part it seems to be gathering dust.

[collapse]

The start of this novel, until around chapter 600-ish is basically a 5/5. However the latter chapters really dip into a 3/5 and it feels like it can keep getting worse because the villains have to be a lot stronger than the MC which then breaks the immersion.

I am eating this according to the current status of the novel, 3/5, because it is very difficult to put down once you started, and it feels like a sucker punch when you get to point where it feels like the quality dipped. <<less

This is a fun story that could have been better if it weren't bloated with repetitions to inflate the word count, but that's just par for the course in Chinese novels. The characters feel 3D, be it enemies or allies of the FMC, none of them give the impression that the Author is trynna D ride their protagonist by making them extremely incompetent so that she, in turn, can seem competent. One minor complaint I have is how everything lines up for the protagonist as soon as she needs it... more>> is too coincidental. <<less

The first half of the novel is extremely good. Thrilling mysteries with a magical Victorian background, where magic is very well balanced and fits incredibly well with the overall atmosphere. Most people (at least the ones that are important) have reasonable thought processes and actions.

However, there are 3 main issues with the novel, two of them only start appearing toward the latter half:

The first issue, which persists from start to finish, is personality. Almost all characters are completely without personality. The author treated them like machines that were built to... more>> reason and perform. Even the rare ones that have personalities are one-dimensional.

The second issue is that toward the latter half, the power scaling starts getting really out of hand. Once the crimson (red completion) rank or higher gets involved, the Victorian background basically gets completely shattered. An average crimson ranker can destroy half a city in a few full power attacks. Once the combat power of the plot entered gold rank, it became even more ridiculous: Almost each of them have "conceptualized" abilities, sort of like absolute domains over a certain physical area that turns everything else that's not the same tier of power or higher irrelevant. By that point, the Victorian setting is completely and utterly irrelevant. Going even higher, toward the end of the plot, when demigods start getting involved, everything becomes conceptualized (i.e. The god of plague "infecting" an entire dimension), there are even different "inner worlds" or dimensions, timelines etc. Not only is the original background setting made completely irrelevant, the plot becomes too dense and too abstract to be followed easily. At the penultimate of main gods, the problem becomes even more exacerbated (main gods are at the universal level, they can rewrite the entire universe at full power; i.e. Resetting time, turning the universe from stars and galaxies into one infinite flat world etc). In the final chapters, another even more exaggerated level is added: primordial gods, along with the concept of multiverse and the multiversal order, which are so vastly different from the original premise of the book that they might as well be a different story.

The third major issue is pacing. The first half of the novel is paced very well in my opinion, though it lacks slice-of-life elements. In the second half however, the pacing speeds up exponentially, the power level inflates exponentially, and the scale inflates exponentially. And with how abstract the plot becomes during the demigod and main god stages, it moving along so fast makes it weird to read. From what I know, the author originally wanted to make the novel a lot shorter than it is, but it got out of hand quickly. Moving closer to the end, he wanted to increase the pacing more and more to make it shorter, and it ultimately became a mess.

tl;dr: Very good first half, meh second half. 4.5/5 for first half, 3.5/5 for second half but nominal 5/5 for effort and first half being actually really good <<less

I actually enjoyed reading despite the frequent word dump. Yes, most dialogues are like character A explaining something and MC repeats it with a question like

A: The Z is blah blah blah

MC: The Z is blah blah blah?

A: yes, additinal info here

MC monologue: who wouldve thought that Z is blah blah blah

Still, I read it since it's similar to lotm.

Definitely a good novel! I would recommend all of you to read it!

To put this novel in simple and short words, it's like LOTM but with a slightly easier difficulty...?

(I'm not good at writing reviews, but I'll try.)

... more>> Just like many people said, this novel definitely lacks the horror and tension of LOTM, but the mysteries, world-building, and lore are pretty solid. I wouldn't say they're peak, but they're still much better than many novels I've read.

The plot is pretty slow-paced and casual, which I really appreciate. We hardly see any long time skips (like years), only short time skips (mostly weeks). The better mysteries, world-building, and lore come much later—after reading over 100 chapters or so—so yeah, you definitely need some patience with this novel.

As for the MC, she's pretty rational, calm, and super smart (her being smart and calm is mostly related to the abilities she got). She's always prepared and makes plans like Klein in most situations. Although she doesn't show much personality or emotion, she's still cute sometimes—so yeah, it's enjoyable~

The power system is really good. Although it has some aspects copied from LOTM, it's still very different from it (unlike The Speedrun Manual of Miss Witch, which power system is just a straight-up copy of LOTM). This novel's power system has its own unique structure and powers, which is one of the things that got me hooked. (The best thing about the Power system is Dorothy exclusive system and many references to video games abilities~)

Another likable thing is the villains. Like that one guy said, the enemies in this novel have some common sense and are smart, which can sometimes even trouble our MC (although most of the time she's always one step ahead). The enemies also have unexpected trump cards that can save them at the last moment. Although we haven't gotten any formidable or long-term antagonists yet, I can wait...

The last thing I want to talk about is the battles between Beyonders. They are interesting, with each Beyonder using their own unique abilities and artifacts. But for now, they're not on the same level as LOTM. Mostly, the abilities shown so far are raw powers; hardly any conceptual abilities have been introduced. But I think I'm complaining too early because there's still a lot more to read...

One thing I wanna complain that gender bender hardly matters, MC just adapts too fast in her new body and this novel doesn't have romance or any s*xual moment, so yeah just don't worry about gender bender tag, it's just for plain decoration...

Overall, I think this novel definitely deserves the 4.0+ rating!

I'd rate it 4.5/5.0! Have a fun time reading this novel~ <<less

This is a pretty fun novel, set in a similar setting said by other reviews.

What I find interesting was the world building, absolute cinema, with great depth with a good amount of information. Not to the point it becomes tedious.

The interactions are fun, the translators really nails what Victorian Englishmen says.

Started reading today, and I'm just cruising through it: Pacing is just right for me with the relatively regular action. And the action! The action part is written excellently with the mysticism at the axis of the story is forming a nice constant tension.

Character building is a little neglected for the above mentioned fast story progressions sake, and I'm still trying to figure out the protagonist. Though so far she is alright and the other characters are fun.

Definitly recommend it.

The story takes inspiration from lord of the Mysteries for its power system and world building then goes on to do it's own thing. The MC is suddenly thrust into a life threatening situation right after they get transmigrated, now they have to survive and navigate this new world. Right now, it's mostly that plus gathering knowledge to become more powerful. It's a good story with decent pacing and I think it could grow on to become much more in the future as the chapters stockpile.

The novel has good building world with lots of unknown history, ruins, deities and organizations. The novel can make the world move as the story progresses, which makes it realistic and logical.

Our MC planned well before the confrontation as well as the Villains so it is exciting to keep up with the story

Although our MC has system support, she is restrained to stick with the setting so she has to use her power wisely

Overall, this novel is well-written

The premise is pretty interesting in my opinion, so far her abilities are pretty powerful for her levels but thats not to say that the MC is just OP. She at least utilises all her abilities properly and plans how to fight instead or rushing in willy nilly. I do think that the frequency of supernatural events could be tuned down but overall, still pretty great. Hopefully, it gets better and better.
