Iberis, an S-class esper diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Having lost all his family, colleagues, and loved ones,

He had no attachment left to life.

If he had a wish, it was only to die with a little less pain.

Lucas, a guide who abruptly entered his life,

Began to shake up Iberis’s world at some point.

“I’m sorry, but I can’t bear to see you die, Major.”

“…Why?”

“Because I want you to live. So… open your mouth, quickly.”

Iberis, who has no will to live,

And Lucas, who struggles desperately to save him.

Walking a tightrope between life and death,

What kind of ending will these two face?

I don't normally write reviews, but I just feel like I need to say this. This isn't a review, but more of a warning about the translations.

This novel is really good, so when I caught up with the translations, I immediately went to Ridibooks and bought some chapters to read. I read about 10 chapters before managing to restrain myself, so I could wait for the translations to catch up and then read some more.

But here's the thing. I had left the translations stacking for so long that I had... more>> a backlog of 40+ chapters, and I felt really happy cos I could finally read a lot of chapters all at once. However, when I reread the translated chapters I had previously brought before... it felt unbearably EMPTY.

That's right, I found out that the translator was using MTL. But that's okay, because the editing is pretty good... NOT. The MTL actually cut A LOT of the description from the novel (TДT)... and that's not the only thing. I found out that in some chapters, there's actually a WHOLE section missing at the beginning and ending of the chapter. Where did they go? Sometimes they just migrated to the next chapter, and sometimes... they were just gone.

Also, what peeves me is that the MC and ML's first time got completely skinned from its description. It was so intimate and descriptive, but the MTL that the translator used censored a lot of it, as well as cutting off some paragraphs by A LOT, so it just felt empty and not as intense and engaging when I first read it. While reading it too, I realised some descriptions didn't match up with my memory, so I looked back on Ridibooks on the SAME chapter and found out... THE ACTIONS AND EVENTS CHANGED COMPLETELY (╥ ╥) ???

For example, in Chapters 164-165,

Spoiler

The MC was overstimulated and had a dry orgasm. The MC was embarrassed and didn't know what had happened, so he worriedly said to the ML that his body might be broken, and of course, the ML laughed and reassured him that it was normal. BUT that whole interaction was COMPLETELY cut off and replaced with the translation just saying that the MC ejaculated normally, and the ML said good job.

[collapse]

I just wanted to let people know about this, since the translator has placed the rest of the novel behind a paywall before gradually releasing it for free. If you're considering buying their translations to read ahead, it's important to be aware of this in advance.

Anyways, that's all I have to say about the translations before you get into this novel. Aside from that, I 100% agree with the majority of the reviews that have already been said. The novel is really good—the overall plot of revenge and outside affairs is really interesting and exciting, and the romance is, albeit slow-burning, really satisfying and enjoyable to read!! Highly recommend. <<less

I got to say, I like this story. I have yet to finish it because my wallet suffer after the release C31, and stop at the C62.
Spoiler

When I looked at the picture of this novel, I thought at the beginning that the white hair was the Esper and the slim black hair was the guide. It certainly was a surprise to know that it was the opposite. If I can summarize the characters it will be like this: Lucas, a bulldozer to our Iberis, a guide. No one can stop him when he has a goal. Iberis, a cold but warmhearted esper. He is a character that you want to hug, but also cool.

I wanted to continue to read it! They have 245 chapters on the site.

My actual rating is between 3 and 4 stars.

Does Spring Come Even for a Dying Esper was a good experience, especially among the guideverses. I've been looking for a guideverse novel/manhwa where one of the leads isn't constantly harassed/raped under the guise of necessity for SO LONG, so it's a relief to finally have found this novel.

And bonus points for being a bottom esper x top guide!

I had a few problems with this novel, but without a doubt the biggest problem for me, as many reviews have mentioned, was the... more>> writing. But I'll elaborate on that later.

----

  • MC (Iberis Hyun) :
Our protagonist is a kind esper, despite appearing cold and distant at first glance. His kindness makes him easily influenced by those close to him. He is very altruistic, always sacrificing his own health for the sake of innocent people. However, having a strong sense of justice, he has no qualms about putting an end to bad people.

I liked his personality, but his mental health was extremely poorly handled. It doesn't take much analysis to realize that his lack of will to live is purely a narrative device to make him a tragic character.

At first, he was very disappointed with his terminal condition, but out of nowhere the novel invents that he actually always wanted to die...? Then a huge drama is created around this for about 3 chapters and *poof* this fact disappears for about 30 chapters. I had even forgotten that he was somewhat suicidal until he almost died and this was brought up again. Then again, more drama on top of that and *poof* it's barely mentioned for more than half the novel.

Then, after a lot happened, the ML looks at him and says "come find happiness with me" and Iberis instantly starts wanting to live. And this lack of will to live is never mentioned again, as if he had completely cured his depression with just those words (only a few brief, poorly placed mentions towards the end to give a slight emotional impact).

Like... this isn't really how depression works...?

Furthermore, I felt that his character is a bit too empty to be a protagonist.

He's a major, but we never see him acting like one. He's a leader on the battlefield, but he doesn't lead his troops. He's an army officer, but we never see him properly interacting with other officers. He's friends with Brenda, but we never see him acting like one (she helps him with a lot of things, but the opposite never happens). He's one of the strongest espers, but we only see him in battle three short times. He's Lucas's lover, but only reciprocates the feelings from the second half of the novel onwards, and barely takes the initiative to show affection until the last chapters.

The most significant initiative he took in the entire novel as a character was to visit the families of his deceased colleagues just once.

Aside from that, he basically only... exists, unlike Lucas who has so much more to offer.

  • Male Lead (Lucas Lowell Blake/Luke Illum) :
Lucas is a prodigy guide and doctor specialized in side effects in espers. He is cold and strictly professional with the people around him, but treats his patients with great care (especially Iberis). Given his abilities, he is quite proud and confident, bordering on arrogant, when it comes to his treatment methods. Because of his pride and favoritism since childhood, he is not afraid to assert his opinions and give orders, even to those of higher rank than him. He lives with the personal goal of avenging his parents and

Spoiler

curing his sister.

[collapse]

He is a great leader on and off the field, even seeming like he is the major instead of Iberis. He is also a great support in battles, not limiting himself to just being a guide for the espers. The parental relationship between him and Winfried is also very beautiful.

Spoiler

And the way he takes care of his sister is adorable.

[collapse]

  • The couple and the romance:
The development of the romance was very organic and full of chemistry. Lucas was the first person who managed to get physically close to Iberis and the first guide who was even minimally compatible with him, while Iberis was one of the only espers who didn't treat Lucas with ulterior motives and wasn't arrogant for being an S-rank.

I loved how much they communicate with each other, whether about boundaries, feelings, or treatment. Their jealousy and possessiveness are also handled with considerable maturity and rationality.

They have a healthy relationship, but it's undeniable that there are dub-con and some minor non-con situations. And especially, the problematic: "what do you mean by 'you don't want to, ' if your body is reacting?". This reasoning is extremely dangerous, even more so when normalized, because it's the real reasoning of ab*sers. Biologically, the body responds to stimuli, but that doesn't mean you WANT to do it. You CAN have an or**sm even during r*pe. And many use this to blame the victim or justify ab*se.

So reading this same line repeatedly in a novel is simply stomach-churning. At first, Iberis clearly didn't want intimate contact, but Lucas insisted, claiming that his body responded and it must be a good feeling. Iberis was even confused afterward because he didn't want it, but it really had been a good feeling.

All of this was a bit too much for me.

Buuuut, at least Lucas never crossed the line of what's tolerable. He sure exaggerated, but didn't go too far. This non-consensual phase isn't very long either. Furthermore, he respected Iberis's health when it was at stake. In the end, the worst part for me wasn't really his actions, but the problematic reasoning itself.

Later on, Iberis starts to consent, but he still falsely denies it along the way, so I feel that at this point the author just has a fetish.

  • Plot:
The plot is overshadowed by the romance, so it's quite simple. It's simply Iberis and Lucas trying to take down Logan and vice versa while Iberis recovers from his terminal illness.

But some things make absolutely no sense:

(not really spoilers)

Spoiler

1. The army leaving Iberis to die makes no sense at all, even considering the rivalries between them. Iberis is the strongest and most promising esper they have, and on top of that, they were short of manpower, having to seek external contracts to meet the need (and they couldn't). So why leave Iberis to die? Making his life difficult by sending him to that isolated and frantic place? Okay, but discarding him as if he were easily replaceable is completely nonsensical.

2. Furthermore, going to Zone N is considered a demotion. But that's where the danger is, that's the most important place to protect. The merits are enormous. Sending someone there is simply giving them more opportunities to shine. How is that a punishment??? Punishment would be to prohibit him from going to the battlefield or acting on the front lines so as not to draw attention.

3. Are you telling me that the meticulous Logan would let "Lucas Blake" live even knowing that he was a skill user and could discover the truth behind his parents' death and seek revenge??? He would have gotten rid of him as quickly as possible, but he simply let him live his life and build a pharmaceutical empire.

[collapse]

Anyway, the pacing is excellent. I was able to enjoy the novel from beginning to end (ignoring the dubs/non-cons). I never felt bored while reading and the ending was a great conclusion.

  • Side characters:
They are also overshadowed by the couple's romance, so they appear little. Furthermore, the novel features basically only 4 relevant side characters (excluding the deceased).

Brenda and Regina are simply the best things that happened in this novel; I want justice for the little time they had.

  • Antagonist:
Basically, Logan.

Even though the novel tried hard to make him THE villain, I felt his impact was a bit too weak. Maybe because things never go right for him and he doesn't pose a real threat? I don't know, but I never felt anything so strong against him; he's kind of too generic. His coldness towards his victims and companions is kind of artificial, Idk.

  • Worldbuilding:
I loved this guideverse for the simple fact that guides and espers are treated like human beings. They have rights and aren't just seen as tools.

Furthermore, guiding isn't seen as purely sexual, and guides aren't seen as walking sedatives for crazed espers. Espers' mana loss of control is much rarer compared to other guideverses, so guiding is more like a medical treatment. They're almost like doctors for espers, and guiding is seen as a treatment.

And on top of that, they can fight with weapons by concentrating mana, so they aren't limited to waiting for espers do the fighting and then treat them.

Another thing I loved is that guiding isn't just unilaterally exploited by the esper. The guides also benefit from the effects of guiding an esper (even without s*xual contact).

And a curious thing was the mix of nameverse in the middle of all this. High-ranked espers and guides may have names engraved on their bodies; this name would be their most compatible partner. It was a very interesting addition that I hadn't seen in any Guideverse until then.

  • Writing:
This must be the biggest flaw of this novel. The writing is unbearably repetitive at times. Some facts are repeated over and over again in very short intervals.

Every 15 chapters, the novel repeated that "Lucas was afraid to get close to others because he lost his parents, so he was afraid of losing someone he loves again" or "Iberis blamed himself and had a strong sense of justice for the victims from 3 years ago." I swear, these phrases appeared at least 10 times throughout the novel.

And I was stunned when, literally IN THE SECOND LAST CHAPTER, the novel spent 3 paragraphs explaining why the guiding was important for the espers... we've literally just read an ENTIRE novel following a terminally ill esper precisely because they weren't guided...

That's the level of redundancy in this writing.

----

I truly enjoyed the novel, especially the second half when the dub-cons stop and everything becomes 100% consensual and the forced drama of Iberis's mental health practically ceases to exist.

I highly recommend it, with the caveat of those small dub/non-cons and terrible writing. <<less

Sorry this isn't a proper review, yet

For those who are confused you can read from chapter 1 from DarkStar Translation website.

Now, I think this story deserve higher rating just because. I don't see any trigger warning in tags that deserve lower than 4★.

... more>> Since I haven't gone far into story I can only comment a bit.

What stood out to me at first is the writing style/pace. It is slower compared to webnovels I used to read nowadays, however it reminds me of normal older novel that narrate most small characters' movement like drinking tea, drying hair, etc.

In relation to that, dialogues and interaction also feel longer than usual. The conversation flow too nicely and characters read each other too well that sometimes I feel them unnatural because even irl people suck at communicating. But I will give this one as a positive thing. (Hopefully they're signs that there will be no miscommunication or misunderstanding between characters.)

In short, if you don't have much patience it might take a few chapters to get used to it.

Now about the characters' impression so far.

MC:

Spoiler

Iberis is one of precious S-class esper however due to something he did (not his fault) he was treated unfairly by the government. This part is both understandable and incomprehensible at the same time. This story is kind of heavy in politic, you can expect things that can happen in guideverse coorporate political drama.

Back to Iberis, he has terminal condition and really need a guide or else he will die in a year or two (since he's kind of workaholic). However most guides are unable to handle or even touch him. That's where Luke (ML) comes from.

He has this typical depressed MC's trait that doesn't really have any will to live, perhaps a PTSD due to the incident that led to his neglect. Compared to other OP esper MC, I think he has more mixed baggages that make him a more complicated character, I mean complicated to understand.

It's normal for people to have inconsistent personality/traits in life, but in book it kind of minus point if characters didn't at least stick to one trait.

Aside from that, he's polite, not very social, and inexperienced in some areas but they're mostly due to his circumstances. There's some scenes that I think he's kinda cute, so at least there's that moment.

I will change my impression later as I read more.

[collapse]

ML

Spoiler

Lucas or Luke gives me a different vibe to normal ML. I think he should be the top right? Okay now he has this common trait of ML top, being OP, has strong supporter, and has a very good position to save MC as his assigned doctor/physician and guide.

However unlike other ML where readers usually can't read much into their mind (appear mysterious etc) we are given a lot of his POV which show how much normal he was. We also told of his background and his goal. In just one-two chapters since he appeared, I feel he has richer life than MC lol.

It shouldn't be groundbreaking, but maan it's just uncommon for ML to be given this much normal POV so that I just have to mention it.

Also his actions bewildered Iberis although he didn't mean to, which I find funny since usually the role is reversed, it's usually the ML which get astonished by MC. I almost thought maybe their role reversed? let's check the tag again.

Ah both Iberis and Luke are around 24-25 and I think they feel their age. They both competent on their job since they have been doing it for years, they're trying to be professional but also has flaws due to their inexperience/immaturity befit their age. They're not overly mature or strangely immature. Normal ig.

[collapse]

If I want to mention flaws, so far, it's the writing style I am afraid whether author will be able to handle some secnes that may need quicker pace. (NGL biggest factor why I usually drop story early). Also, some inconsistencies especially in characters, I wonder whether it can be ignored later... for plot it's leaning towards politic, for a guideverse I hope there will be more action related to the rift and monsters just my two cents.

This novel's a rare guideverse that is more focus on the affairs in the outside world rather than the dungeon, but the interactions between the MCs is still interesting to read. Actually, they make me feel warmer inside. Both of them are green as a forest and only have eyes for each other. There's moments of obsessive/possessive, but they deal with it rationally and respectfully. That's totally chef's kiss👍, if I have to be blunt.

About the main characters, they are the typical "fated pairs", "soulmates" Guide & Espers that we... more>> frequently found in novels of this genre. Having said that, their dynamic and story still have a unique side which sets this novel apart from others. Not because the top is a guide, nor the "salvation in the name of love". But, the MCs take it seriously when it comes to their work. Even if both of them are S-class awakeners, which allows them to naturally stand on the top of the power hierarchy without trying, MC and ML actually use their power and intelligence to effectively do their job.

ML tries his best to save MC's life not just because the esper is the first person he ever loves romantically. He's a doctor at heart, striving to be a capable doctor and guide who could prevent as many premature deaths as possible.

MC overworked and risked his health day by day on fights that doesn't necessarily his responsibility, genuinely wanted to save at least one more person, even if it means he would be exploited and treated unjustly.

Those two are truly what heroes are, that's why it's so fulfilling to see them found each other at last.

Because both of them are remarkable people that their love is memorable, I believe. <<less

The story is really good. The plot, the world building is done very well. I love the tension between MC and ml. At times they are both conflicted and its sweet when they give in. Of course, MC is very powerful but his place in the world is still vulnerable and needs support. In the end, I love how beautifully their love is blooming, not forced, not resisted, just going at its own pace. If someone has raws of this work, pretty please dm me and tell me. Some chapters have misgendering issues or other such mistakes (MTL?) and I hope the poster rereads some to check because the mistakes are quite obvious. Besides that, its readable and th story engaging so far.

Edit:

Ok its a good novel. Rly recommended.

Espers and Guide have dif roles like in any of these, but the circumstances have made it so guides have more active on site work. They may not have offense power themselves but the story made it so they can also fight and protect others if needed, so they aren't... more>> flower vases u need to protect at all, even if espers are still stronger, which is a nice change.

The MC: A cold, decisive and strong on the outside but warm and shy inside man that has only known pain since the day he was born, his situation never stops him from taking care of those around him and he is the type to care deeply once u are in his sphere of influence, tho the reason why it reaches a level that's worrying is due to his own life story.

The ML: A prideful but purpose driven doctor, Lucas takes no BS from patients and does his job seriously, even if that makes him enemies along the way. He is pushy yes, but all his motives are legit and for the good of his new patient, Iberis. This guide is very powerful and needs no rescuing from anybody, an observant man that also has a difficult past. Dont wry tho, it never stops him from being the type of "show dont tell" about how he cares, the ideal person to heal the body and heart of Iberis. <<less

You don't see Top Guide x Bottom Esper often, and even less non-toxic ones.

I really like the main characters' personalities and how you can really see the way they fall in love over time subtly. I honestly thought the top was going to be another soulless, expressionless character, but was pleasantly surprised by how his demeanor changed together with his growing feelings and how expressive he can be. He's very much on the human side of stoic, without coming off as extreme and unbelievable.

The guiding works from a distance but... more>> better through physical touch. Luke stays respectful throughout it, which honestly does wonders for the relationship progression and character development. Nothing feels forced, the characters are consistent, and the romance and physical intimacy flows very slow and natural. If there's one (or two) thing (s) I had a gripe with in this novel (although I can't say if it's a translation issue), it's the author's writing style. It felt a bit lacking at some points, and too simplistic, and was a little too repetitive. Some things were explained at least 3 times over the span of maybe 50 chapters, my memory is not THAT bad, dear author!

Another thing is the bottom
Spoiler

saying "no" in almost every intimate scene. It makes sense in the beginning since Iberis is touch-starved and reacts sensitive to the guiding. He's overwhelmed. The repetitiveness of it gets annoying with time, though. The lack of inner monolog from Iberis during these scenes makes you question if he really means the "no" or not. Luke seems to know perfectly, though.

Again, it makes perfect sense for Iberis to act like this in the beginning due to his past and situation, but I would've really liked more inner monolog from him to make things clearer, or for him to develope in this area faster.

I also understand this can make it feel dub/non-con, but given the situation I wouldn't see it that way. It's basically just a Doctor saving a person's life. If Iberis refused the guiding he would die. And they don't have their first time until they're dating, either.

Luke never wants to cause harm to Iberis and never does anything Iberis truly doesn't want to unless it's to save Iberis' life, and even then he respects his wishes and doesn't cross the line unless Iberis consents.

I think the author handled their relationship really well and healthy.

[collapse]

All in all, it's a very enjoyable read, with a very sweet and pure romance with both MC's healing each other. Their romance is beautifully written, leaving enough room for other plot points to progress alongside it smoothly.

Truly a unique experience when it comes to Guideverse. <<less
