Seeing Kang I-won always appear unscathed due to his regeneration ability and excessive use of guiding drugs, Heo Do-kyung misunderstands him deeply and treats him particularly poorly.

However, after a certain incident, Heo Do-kyung realizes he had been misunderstanding Kang I-won, and soon finds himself increasingly bothered by him….

In this unbalanced, toxic Guideverse world, where the number of Guides is far less than that of Espers, MC was a clear victim of fate. As an Esper, he was, sadly, manifested with an ability that's not really suitable for fighting. But, to survive, he pushes his body to the limit, sacrifices it for others without complaining a word. A lonely, hardworking man who's really awkward to kindness. He would prefer to have everyone ignore him than have even one person likes him.

Life had taught him the hard way. Don't... more>> asked for anything, because he can't rely on anyone. Especially those conceited Guides, who should have been the lifeline for Espers like him. Left with almost nothing, MC broke down both physically (not really) and mentally.

To add salt to the wound, his high-matched guide has to be a nepo baby.

ML is the opposite of MC. He was born in an influential, rich family, having a beautiful appearance, and is an extremely rare S-class guide. That's why, comparing to others, he's even more prideful.

But, fortunate for MC, that nepo baby is also righteous (even if it's self-righteous). ML was still a fresh-out-of-school guide who believes that he has the responsibility to guide the Espers, stopping them from going berserk. Even if ML hates Espers, feeling annoyed with their over-the-boundary advances.

Started from a misunderstanding, they get to know each other better, and gradually fall in love. MC found a solid reason to move forward from his past, ML learned and grew into a better person. <<less

4.5 stars.

This story came out of nowhere and was such a great read! This is a story of someone who has been depressed and withdrawn finally opening up to the world after a long period of isolating themselves.

Despite being a short story, I think it was very well paced, the relationship between the main characters was well developed and both Lee Won and Dokyung were well characterised in the story. I really liked how their relationship developed in such a natural way, they really just fell for one another enjoying... more>> the time they spent together.

Also, maybe the best part of this is how
Spoiler

the guide was the top instead of being the bottom like in other guideverse stories.

[collapse]

As for why I didn't rate it 5 stars, I just kind of wished for more... because the story is short, many things become more condensed and I wished it was expanded a little more to be a more medium length story.

Overall, it's a cute read for people looking for non-toxic guideverse novels, highly recommend! Thank you translator for the translation, I hope the translation can be finished and attract more people to read this~ <<less

This is a bit of a brainless read, at least for me. Though there are quite a few heavy mental health topics mentioned, I feel like the way the author delved into them was a bit too matter of fact for me to really feel that connected to any of them. I found the language used was quite basic, which could be in part the words chosen in translation, but even then, the way that the author went about describing quite traumatic events just didn't connect with me, as there... more>> was something missing in the delivery of how their emotions were described.

I did like both the main characters, and I went into this not knowing it was a younger top, so I was a bit surprised that they had about an 8 year age gap with the younger being 23 and the older 31, but their ages didn't really matter too much when reading as the younger one was quite mature and it really was the older that had a lack of emotional maturity. This has a guide ML which I do tend to prefer as well, so that was a bonus for me, as I tend to prefer when the esper is the bottom.

Overall it's not really a bad novel, but the ending is way too abrupt, and I also wasn't interested enough to continue reading the extras, so it was a bit disappointing for me to finish. If you really want to read a guideverse, this is an ok option I would say! <<less

I feel kinda wrong not giving this at least 4 stars. Because like other reviews say, there's more worthwhile here than usual. It's a shockingly nontoxic guideverse with important themes and positive messages. The author definitely seems to know what they wanted to say and communicated it with the story effectively.

The problem for me was that it was way too dry. There might have been something lost in translation. However good at heart the story was, the way it was told was notably boring. Everything was overly explained in such... more>> plain words, but not really described in any evocative way. The feelings didn't touch, the action didn't excite, the characters didn't breathe. This was pretty fatal to my enjoyment of it since it lacks the typical tr*shy fun at the same time.

Spoiler

As an example of it lacking tr*shy enjoyment, take the ending. It's a missed opportunity for simple power fantasy gratification. As a reader, you can see the reawakening coming for a few reasons. But when it finally happens, he uses his new ability to freeze a monster to save his guide—and that's it. It time skips and summarizes that he was really impressive cleaning up after that and was obviously S class. It's underwhelming in that and in several other ways. His regeneration ability was thematically meaningful, but his new ice ability feels ordinary. It seemed like it teased that he might become the first person with a healing ability, but nope (though the authorities would probably take him captive so that's good). It was also mentioned that some rare people have dual abilities, so only having one also feels too basic. His ability itself was already S level. The unnamed esper used to foreshadow reawakening had their ability rise in strength by several levels. The MC just swaps his out. Finally, in a side story, it shows the strength of his ice ability in action, but since we never see any other external S rank power to compare it to, it still feels rather bland with the writing.

Great concept, good exposition, poor execution and disappointing/rushed ending.

Pretty much everything lacked development: characters-wise, plot-wise and emotion-wise. By the middle, it just turned into melodrama for the sake of melodrama. And not the entertaining kind...

I'm convinced, just by looking at the ratings, that there's definitely a target audience that would/does enjoy it. Pathos it just not for me though.

Short and sweet read I binged in roughly 3 days. Definitely recommending for those also into Guideverses! I will say that it deserves trigger warnings for graphic depictions of violence, suicial ideation, attempted su*cide, and dub-con, but if you're far enough into this genre to find this series and be interested in reading it despite the cover art not even depicting the main characters, you're definitely seasoned enough to handle it.

For me, the concept of a regenerative-type Esper and the implications it brings is a pretty novel idea within... more>> both the Guideverse and Hunterverse genres. I have a huge appreciation for the way it's described to result in Kang Iwon's severe survivor's guilt + self-sacrificial tendencies and the way those around him continuously grew desensitized to his grevious injuries. For Iwon, Heo Dokyung is the first person to both notice his recklessness and seriously reach out urging him to stop with a level of stubborness matching his own. The reality of Iwon's CPTSD isn't something easily brushed over nor healed despite all of Dokyung's patience and efforts until literally the Epilogue/Side Stories, and I give props to the author for how realistic that is.

I also feel that it would've been easy to write Dokyung in a way that pissed off the readers, but luckily that was not the case--despite his frustrating misconceptions of Iwon and his abilities at the start of the story, it's Dokyung's own curiosity that drives him to clear these misunderstandings up and eventually admit that he was wrong for it. From there, we really got to see how patient and caring he could be in face of Iwon's struggles (green flag!!!!!!!!)

Like a previous reviewer mentioned, I do wish this novel and its side stories stretched on a bit longer. If I had one other criticism, it would be the lack of major plot points that weren't just dungeons/monster waves, though I also recognize this was inherent to the nature of this being a shorter story.

Ultimately, Damn My Guide still gets 5 stars from me in terms of sheer enjoyment and the number of preferences it hit for me (guidverse, teasing younger gong, cold-turned-flustered older shou, suicidal + self-sacrificial MC). Also since the webite for whatever reason won't let me comment properly, let alone change my nickname, this review also functions as my thank you shoutout to the translator, Bree, for their hard work translating the story! Thanks so much!!!! <<less

I really loved this story. There was a really good balance of action, drama, and romance. Surprisingly, my favorite parts were the action scenes, but I also enjoyed the way the two main characters' relationship develops. The main character is god awful and communicating and severely traumatized, but I love him so much lol. The male lead is quite sweet, too. I think the MC's trauma is treated with respect and seriousness which can be rare for the genre. Overall one of my favorite guideverse that I've read so far.

Beautiful story. And please note; this is an angsty, dark type of story. You will be bombarded with all kinds of negative emotional situations and gore description.

But the steady, slowburn progress really paid off in the end.

Thank you translator Bree for helping bringing this story to us.

first the translator Bree is amazing! I like the way everything flowed smoothly and the way the guide verse was explained. I am aware that this is both attributed to the author and the translation, so I am both grateful for the translator (Bree) to make my journey smooth and the author to make it intriguing and exciting. Some parts about the verse can be repetitive but the translator used different lingo to make it seem new.

This is a novel that not only gripes with mental topics and tough ones... more>> at that, it also contains the right touch of romance build up and slow romance burns. I was anxiously waiting for the moment they connect, and once they did, it did not seem rushed or s*upidly (ok maybe the dome part was a little rushed, and anticlimactic but nonetheless that wasn't the point actually connected emotionally completely!). So I recommend this!!!!

it pretty good and a good read, I was hoping for more driving /yellow scenes, but the amount was concise to portray that what they are attracted to each other and connection was not only physical but mentally/emotionally.

So so again I recommend!!!! <<less

My first Korean guideverse novel. I love secretly soft, self-sacrificial and misunderstood characters.

MC is all that with a regeneration ability that makes him throw himself into harm's way all the more while the ones around him take his sacrifice for granted.

ML the guide is in the role of the protector, initially cold from past poor experiences with espers, but becoming the warmest ball as he overcomes his misunderstandings.

I love who author decided was gong/shou in the relationship but I especially like how both of them are secretly soft for each... more>> other and will take turns to worry/care for each other. <<less

Read it around 3 days. It is a short story with interesting characters. There are depression and suicidal thoughts on this novel so beware!!

I cried rivers while reading it. Maybe I was too emotional but It just felt meaningfull for me.

There is constant tension that makes you sit through needles and anticipate what comes next. I wondered through the whole novel whether we'll get a HE or a BE. In the end, I decided it didn't matter. It would not be appropriate for my subjective self to decide on that.... more>> Not my place to judge.
Spoiler

since the happy ending ending on that character at that time meant bad ending for me which is highly subjective

[collapse]

I personally liked the ending and found it meaningfull.

Spoiler

in my opinion, losing his power was a great ending for him as he was yearning for that this whole time. As for his other ability, I wish they made it more apparent before. While I realized the weather, I just didn't think it would end up like that, but honestly, I'm glad that he didn't get some healing ability because he would start to think that he have to pay his sins by helping others which in turn would make him live a life for others, not himself, but the second mother wanted him to live happily unlike his son which couldn't live. Also that ability doesn't give any offensive power, meaning he couldn't have used it when he needed it the most. So I'm pretty content with what I got and I highly disaggree with other commentors in this regard.

It was a great journey for me. <<less

An interesting twist from typical guideverse stories. The MC is a tortured soul who has been bullied and stereotyped because of his powers. His abilities basically requires him to get mauled in every fight, so be prepared for gruesome scenes every time. He's in agony every chapter. His powers are honestly not that great, so he makes up for it by training and studying hard. Throughout the book, I kept thinking he was so pitiful.

The ML on the other hand is a prideful Guide, who is a germaphobe and looks... more>> down on Espers due to their desperation for guiding. The Guide is the top in the relationship for anyone that cares.

Personally, I don't enjoy depressed, stoic, anti-social characters, so I had to push myself to finish the story. It was a little too dry and grim for me. I would have given the story 3 stars, but I gave it 4 for having unique concepts and characters. <<less

Song recommendation: Brand New City by Mitski

I loved this novel!!!! It's definitely for the angst lovers. It's very gorey and deals with depression, PTSD, self-harm, and su*cide. There's also a scene that could make people uncomfortable:
Spoiler

There's also a f*ck-or-die scene that happens while one party is unconscious.

The relationship isn't toxic!!!! The translation/writing was a little dull, but it doesn't get names or pronouns mixed up. I won't rate it as 5 stars because it's not life changing, but it's certainly a great novel.

This doesnt have enough reviews so I'll add mine:

HEAVY ON THE TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR ... more>>
Spoiler

self-harm, panic attacks, su*cide ideation and attemps, dub-con bordering on r*pe (that actually makes sense in the context if the story), and a genuinely tragic past that was a lot sadder than I was expecting

[collapse]

Ooooo this was SO good and sufficiently angsty if that's your cup of tea. The ML is a green flag through and through yay!

If you need more info about the dub-con:
Spoiler

the MC was dying and the only way the ML could save his life was to have s*x with him. While he was unconscious, bleeding, and in pain. Now I am the FIRST person to drop a story with dubcon/NC or a red flag action, and I detest that the author put this into her otherwise great story, but in the context of the story and how the guiding has been set up it makes complete sense even if I hated it. In this world however that's just how intense guiding works and the MC was never mad and he understood it was an absolute last resort so YMMV

[collapse]

Anyway, I know this isnt an especially detailed review but

4.5 stars, deserves way more reads and love than it gets currently <<less

I didn't expect to like this as much as did, but it's also a story that had some emotional scenes that seriously tugged at my heartstrings.

Both MC and ML had baggages they had to contend with before they could work as a couple, and it was great seeing their conflict get resolved as the story progressed. And I appreciate how getting better wasn't portrayed as something simple and linear, but rather as something they both actively had to work on.

It's a short but fulfilling read.

4/5!!!

I honestly think this is very sweet but also very sad in some parts. I enjoyed it a lot and definitely recommend it. Overall it's a very good novel and I liked the ending.

Spoiler

I just feel that the relationship needed some balancing. I would have liked to see more of Heo Do-kyung POV or just anything. I would have liked the MC going to therapy. Maybe even couples.

Government mandated therapy for all espers and guides would make sense. I honestly find it so weird that guides aren't therapists. Like is the government really not keeping track of the mental wellbeing of people that have superpowers and not restricting their movement. Like I would think they would have monthly mental health exams. I feel like the whole government system could have been more refined.

I also would have really liked for them (MC and ML) to be more like friends before they became lovers. The romance felt a bit rushed but not by much. After all, empathy is the beginning of many relationships.

On a side note the non-con/dub-con scene was handled well. It portrayed Heo Do-kyung desperation and self loathing while guide/raping Kang I-won. His terror and fear that the MC was gonna die was written well. But I would rather not have it at all. I quick consent from the MC would have taken only a second and would have been for the best.

I really enjoyed it, has some angst but not for long

Also the reviews saying that the MC overthinks a lot about certain things is correct but I didn't mind that enough considering everything he's been through

By the end he acts completely different and seems much happier

Also something I really enjoyed, both the MC and ML show embarrassment and smile (not just at each other, at least the MC). Actually this is mostly the MC, because we don't see the ML interact much with others

The translation is a bit jarring. They used ChatGPT (one chapter actual had the "ChatGPT detects this is sensitive content" written in it.) Furthermore, you can tell different areas where they did long strings but didn't trim it so sections repeat but phrased differently.

Outside that, the story is angsty, almost a bit preachy, about survivor's guilt and finding meaning in life after loss. The concept is very fresh, there are a lot of innovations in the storytelling, and none of the typical sand sculptures. There is definitely some parts where... more>> it feels from but stick with it the ending is good! <<less

I really liked this story, short and a nice read. There's something I find incredibly satisfying with someone who's being looked down upon hides their self-sacrifice and someone who has the same impression meets them and figure out something in the story is missing. A bit of angst, a misunderstanding that isn't frustrating because characters refuse to communicate or listen to each other, a bit of "slow-burn" as their relationship gets closer. I liked MC's character, I also liked the rest of the crew. I liked the ML but I... more>> feel like he fell of a bit when:
Spoiler

he became so in love/obsessed with MC that he became physically sick when he was away and just wanted to tie his soul to him out of desperation. His love was a bit... darker. MC also loved him but I feel like his type of love was a bit more sweet where he opened up his heart to ML, while it felt like ML wanted to gouge his heart out of his chest. But emotional instability was also in his esper nature so maybe it's just one of the typical esper-guide verse characteristics where all espers have an obsessive nature idk.

[collapse]

The story was short so the plot wasn't really that deep or complicated. It was mostly about them and that's okay. <<less

MC's power makes his body basically immortal, to the point noone cares to notice that his mental state is collapsing under pressure. This POV was quite an interesting read.

The story is well-paced and romance-focused altering between

- action, showing how S-rank regeneration can be used to make suicidal moves noone else can perform

... more>> - the backlash, from both the mental pressure and physical strain, since MC is avoiding guidance and relies on guiding medicine too much

All the while ML (the guide) gradually starts noticing the signs that there is something deeply wrong with MC, finally catching on that he needs special attention.

Some scenes in particular were vivid, even if they make you laugh or cry at the absurdity of the situation, they still felt real and relatable, because the world building is believable and writing is quite good.

It's normal from MC's perspective to overdose on guiding medicine, and when ML
Spoiler

passes him by and is like WTF?? Why are you lying in the middle of the stairs with your nose bleeding? MC desperately tries to downplay it and wave him away as if it would be ok to just pass him by in that situation lol.

[collapse]
And you know it's absurd, but MC's lifelong experience makes this whole predicament only natural, and a bit amusing at that.

I would say it was a worthwhile read. Most plot twists were planned ahead, and it made them satisfying even if predictable. On the contrary, a couple of flashbacks were a bit tiresome and cliche, but short enough that I can easily forgive them.

There were a lot of hooks as if preparing the 2nd arc of the story.
Spoiler

MC's friend moved to Seoul,

[collapse]
and ML had significant connections there: his previous team, S-rankers chasing after him, his wealthy father worrying about his future etc.

At this point MC's life took a sharp turn, but when the story seems ready to dive into the new environment and present new challenges, the pace slows down abruptly.

The romance is complete, but the story had even more potential if the author found a way to not define MC/ML relationship just yet. <<less
