“Pretty Tr*sh. Is it you? The one who stood me up.”

The first unwritten rule of Cheonghwa Town: Do not get entangled with Tae Muwon. A pirate and owner of the warship Peira, he was an absolute being in Cheonghwa Town.

From the moment he suspects Cheongyeon of being a member of the Hwa clan, Cheongyeon’s life began to veer as if hit by a tempest…

Heya, this is the translator here~ To preface, this novel would probably be a bit polarizing to NU readers here who have certain preferences (though funnily enough it's mostly liked by Korean readers), so take this review as sort of a caution so that the book finds the right audience.

To summarize the plot simply, a quaint island city lies in the fantastical setting in which our protagonists live. Our MC has supernatural powers unbeknownst to others and needs to eat a certain flower to survive. While looking for the flowers,... more>> he rans into ML, a pirate and overlord of the town, who is in search of MC's kind of people. MC manages to lie out of his initial situation but ML's suspicions are unrelenting.

As I've warned in the first chapter, the ML is a jerk. He's ruthless and violent, though I would argue looking at it in the perspective of the setting, it would make sense as he is a pirate. In any case, he does unfortunately hurt MC, who tries to stand his ground but still understandably afraid of him. Meanwhile, MC is the pure-hearted and kind type. Although he is not the textbook "strong" character and is scared of ML, he's rather positive despite his hardships and does sufficiently well for himself, and always speaks up to ML. And for the record, he actually can be very strong through his superpowers, just that he doesn't really use them!

So why am I giving it a 5 star? Well, I am really enjoying the story so far, the fresh and unique setting and premise is quite different from other novels and appealing to my tastes, so I'm excited to see where this is going. Also, come on, who can say no to that cover by God Jinsa-nim? And while I love sweet romances with kind and perfect and doting love interests as much as the next person, I'm also a believer of second chances and character development. While the ML is an a**hole, I would not say he isn't redeemable. So far, he's the type that treats others as he likes and then afterwards be like 'wait why do I feel so nasty?' There's something fun (ny) about watching an idiot being enlightened of his idiotic ways, regretting and being down bad. We haven't gotten to that point yet but fingers crossed.

The novel is still very new, so I can't comment much at this point, but I'm looking forward to both the plot and character development!

Update/edit: So far, there's no regret per se but by the end, ML is clearly head over heels and endlessly weak to MC, even though he maintains his rough behaviour and language. Which is fine, that's just his signature personality. Why would he need to be some prince charming? And MC is very happy. The plot turned out to be a little too long winded for me, but the worldbuilding proves to be strong. <<less

I've been reading the raws on Ridibooks and I am excited for the chapters to catch up as I've been simultaneously reading the tl and the raws to catch any details I might miss in the raws. It'll be helpful to read the translator's (xuexxi) review & the synonpsis first to get a good idea of the storyline and characters as I'll mostly focus on what I like about the novel.

The setting is super interesting: a mostly submerged world where continents remain afloat due to the powers of a (mythical?... more>> :P) people called the Hwa clan, who have the powers to control vegetation. The world building is nicely paced, and you are kind of fed details in every chapter to piece together a good idea of where this story is taking place.

The gong (Tae Muwon AHHH) is a bit of an a**hole, like the translator said. But he's never truly ruthless with the su (Cheongyeon AHHHH) and in fact their interactions are very fun to read because of how multifaceted both of their characters and personalities are. Cheongyeon is very rooted (pun intended) as a character, has a clear goal in his mind, and is the teeniest bit cunning and rebels against Muwon in his own cute way. Muwon is just some dude who really really likes flowers (wink wink read chapter 82) and the second-in-command of the pirate ship that has laid claim to Cheonghwa Town, where Cheongyeon lives. It's slowly revealed to us the extent that their lives intertwine (it's almost like it's MEANT TO BE).

psst they've met before as kids! XD <333333 very very briefly, and who knows if they remember each other :shruggers:

Anyways, the thing I really like about this story is that I honestly can't tell which direction it's going to take -- the plot unfolds in a way that keeps you guessing and 4 chapters/week is nowhere near enough to scratch the itch.

The side characters are charming and very endearing. This novel has its fair share of comedic moments amidst the ass-clenching suspense/build up, and all the characters are really well fleshed out (my favorites are the Planets, they all have such personality) and come alive to make this story very vivid. In my opinion, although this is a fantasy-ish setting, it's very well thought-out, doesn't feel contrived, and very immersive.

The plot and romance are well-balanced, not too much of a slow burn. The plot doesn't lag when the romance isn't quickly developing and vice versa. But when the romance does develop it WILL give you palpitations.

keywords: sexy mf pirate, beautiful gentle apothecary, whales, lobsters, 20, 000 hwan, lotus flower tea :3, albinism, etc.

I hope more people start reading this so that we can all sh*t on Muwon and cheer Cheongyeon on together (camping in CG's comment section is a full time job).

MC is being humiliated again and again. It's really frustrating. He kind of cares but ignores it when it's too much.

I knew the ML was an a-hole from the translator's warning. But this is more depressing than I expected. Especially mc's attitude. You can feel all the pent up trauma and I have no hope of it ever getting resolved. Only the ML acting like prince charming solving his problems, conveniently ignoring that he was the source of those problems.

It's also disappointing that we have yet another violent ML in... more>> a Korean bl. Like he can't be sexy if he's not a killer.

Dropping. I'd prefer Saturn as ml. <<less

Both main characters are not very likeable in my opinion. I was expecting more since it is written by a popular author, but I still can't get myself to like them, especially ML.

Dropped for now, but I might still pick it up later or/and change my rating since the story's setting is spectacular and extremely unique—an apocalyptic world with pirates and sinking continents and a hidden tribe with the ability to keep them afloat? That's f*cking fresh.

It's just a pity the ML is like that. :/

Story with an interesting MC, a rather unique premise and nice worlbuilding completely ruined by the terrible and repeated noncon upon which is built the MC and ML's relationship. For me the ML is unreeedemable and I am skipping all the NC scenes and only sticking around because the Hwa people plot keeps me interested.

This story is definitely not for everyone but I think it’s very good. The ML is a total a-hole but he’s very well written so it works. I wish MC was less of a push-over but it’s part of his character and I feel like as the story progresses he gets a bit better. A major part of the story is how both the MC and ML had crappy lives but ended up on opposite ends when it comes to coping. Overall I think it’s definitely worth the read.

From the reviews, you probably already know why you should be cautious before taking a bite of this novel, and how great the world building is so I wont be talking about that. I truly give this novel 5 stars, because I respect the fact that the author doesn’t necessarily excuse the actions of the ML— he is supposed to be unlikable in the beginning, I wouldnt describe him as a morally gray character really... but he IS redeemable in my opinion.

I think this was a slow burn done in... more>> the right way. Its not a “they hate and do unspeakable things to each other and their dynamic constantly clashes throughout the whole novel until the very very end and we only see 5 chapters of them liking each other” kind of novel (sorry for the very specific description).

Its really unrealistic for the ML and MC to not hate each other considering their circumstances. But we see the stark contrast in how the ML treats the MC differently to others. We see background characters comparing their dynamic constantly. However, the ML and MC do not notice this at all, the MC doesnt realize how highly the ML thinks of him, (i dont even think the ML realizes this either). They care so deeply for each other, and the yearning is chef’s kiss. We see them longing for their presence and the mini panic attacks the ML has at the idea of the MC being taken away.

I think reading this novel and their journey together is really worth it! The plot, world building, the characters, the dynamics, dialogue, and the writing... it just makes you wanting more. <<less

This is a red flag ridden, spicy novel. Reminds me of Painter of the Night, Jinx and other korean bl manhwa: the romance dynamic is an unstable toxic tr*shy ML and pushover MC. However I eat up toxic love stories so it's fine with me LOL

The dirty talk is wild lmao it had me putting my phone down to contemplate life. The author is definitely aware of how absurd it is and is unashamed of it. Lots of comedic undertone to lighten up the toxicity throughout the novel.

The plot and... more>> setting really surprised me, super interesting and unique. Typically dystopian settings in a lot of bl novels feel flimsy to me, it's more of a flavor text. But here it feels immersive and well thought out: dystopian flooded earth, pirate gangs, secret clans capable of floating entire continents. It's a violent and brutal world, so I can understand why the ML is unstable. <<less

The setting and world building for this novel is one of the most unique and interesting I've read in long time. The world has flooded and to escape the rising waters, certain continents are being held up by giant plants. The legend goes that those who control these plants are the Hwa clan, who have mystic powers. But most believe they are just legends even after the 11th continent sunk....

I personally like the dynamic between the MC and ML but the consent is a little dubious at the start of... more>> their relationship. But they are both very strong characters that with a lot of personality. Maybe I'm just weak to pirates... <<less

I've read several of Chepali's works (The Foul, Perennial Species) and what I like about their webnovels is how complex the worldbuilding, characters, and plot are. Each of their novels feels very unique and distinct from one another.

What I think sets Cheongwha Town apart from his other works is the level of gore and violence. Violence is very casually treated in the novel and just a part of the world that the characters inhabit. Similar to some of Chepali's other works, I felt that the plot got a little too... more>> complicated for its own good-- the last 1/3 of the webnovel has a lot of plot mechanics to move through and lost some of the character interactions that I initially liked. What I did like? Very unique setting. Great worldbuilding. Lots of action. Likeable supporting characters. A charismatic ML who has some of the best lines and dialogue-- just totally unexpected and made me chuckle at various points. Despite the aggressiveness and violence of some of the characters and plot, the author balances it with humour and moments of levity. Generally, a well-written page-turner with a lot going on.

Don't expect modern-day concepts of consent early on in the book. This is a fantasy setting where power thru strength and violence occurs, and mystical things can happen.

I've read all of the main novel but none of the side stories.

Main Characters:

Spoiler

MC is Cheongyeon. A stereotypical naive, pure-hearted protagonist with special powers. MC is part of the Hwa Clan-- super-powered people who can control and communicate with plants. In this world, most of the continents are sinking but members of the Hwa Clan are able to grow and maintain Cheonji flowers which support the world's continents and prevents them from sinking. Members of the Hwa Clan have hidden themselves and most people believe them to be legends/myths at this point. MC has intentionally isolated himself since childhood to prevent having his powers exposed and works as a poor apothecary and part-time bartender. MC secretly tends and maintains the Cheonji flower supporting Cheongwha Town (the island he lives on) and has periodically suffered from bouts of depression.

ML is Tae Muwon of the Peira pirates. ML is the number two in Peira and eventually suspects MC is part of the Hwa Clan but can't prove it. ML is violent, volatile, rude, and has unnatural levels of intuition. He's a member of the Kwon Clan-- a group of people who used to live on the 11th continent before it sank and are now looking for a way to resurrect the continent via the Hwa Clan. Prior to meeting MC, ML is promiscuous and only beds women without attaching any feelings. It gets reiterated throughout the novel that, for most people, ML is bad news-- people actively avoid ML for fear of accidentally antagonizing him and and being on the wrong side of his anger-- as he casually hurts people over the smallest transgressions and does kill people pretty often. MC is ML's weak spot and the only person he never physically hurts.

[collapse]

Other characters:

Spoiler

There are quite a few supporting characters in the book-- many of which are Peira pirates under ML, but also other pirates and members of the Hwa Clan. Majority of Peira are refugees from the sunken 11th continent who, similar to the Hwa, have hidden themselves to avoid being ab*sed.

There are five planets (aka Peira's upper management) in the novel and they all have distinct characteristics. My favourite is Saturn-- he's introduced early in the novel and is already harbouring a crush on MC before ML and MC meet. He's a pirate and obviously very physically strong, but inside he's soft and squishy and so lovable. He never has a shot with MC but he's so smitten, even buying MC's herbal medicines without any idea of how to use them.

[collapse]

Potential Trigger Warning:

Spoiler

Bloodlines and purity of blood is a common theme in Korean manhwa/webnovels. I don't know enough about Korean culture to know why that is, but there's a lot-- A LOT-- of stuff about bloodlines in this book and who has "pure" blood or is half-blood. Friendly warning for people where this kind of talk is a sensitive issue.
