The Xiang family fell from grace, turning the once respected patriarch, Xiang Zhiyuan, from a noble official into a corrupt official everyone despised. Xiang Yi found herself responsible for her younger siblings and struggling to survive amidst the difficulties.

In search of a way out, she sought out the old engagement with Tan Ting, the son of the prestigious Tan family, reviving the engagement and entering the Tan household herself.

This news spread, with everyone mocking the Xiang family’s daughter for scheming and clinging onto the Tan family, disregarding her own dignity.

Tan Ting had never seen his engaged fiancée, who hailed from a corrupt official’s family, until the day she came to his door with the marriage contract in hand.

Although Tan Ting didn’t particularly like her, he promptly acknowledged the engagement.

Yet, they had nothing to say to each other.

He could only watch her as she followed the Tan family’s strict rules for women, managing daily affairs, taking care of the family, and continuing their bloodline…

She never revealed her emotions, and he had no intention of probing.

He thought, as long as she wasn’t as greedy and corrupt as her father, maybe they could continue this arrangement..

Until one day, he saw Xiang Yi laughing and chatting with others.

She was dressed plainly, without much jewelry, but her bright eyes shone with a gentle and soft light. She stood quietly among the crowd, clean and dazzling.

Tan Ting was momentarily stunned.

However, the gentle smile on her face disappeared abruptly when she caught sight of him…

I saw this earlier and am quite impatient so MTL'ed the rest, then decided to actually wait for the proper translations since a lot of the nuance of the story is lost due to MTL. (The proper translations are so much better!)

First off, this is a very slow-moving romance, like Zack Snyder super slow motion, especially on the part of the FL. The Male Lead (ML) may appear quite aggravatingly borderline jerk to the FL in the earlier stages so please don't be put off just by this, but... more>>

his turnaround when he realises he was wrong and his conviction of sticking to the FL despite everything more than makes up for it.

Do realise that this is not a rebirth novel, so what makes it extra special is that both leads are learning in real time amidst a very interesting period in their lives.

Secondly, this story is set against a backdrop of conflicts centred mainly on the ruling elite vs the educated but common people and the ongoing social unrest and turmoil in the government. So this is not just mainly Romeo and Juliet because their families have a grudge, but the society they are in is already prejudiced and it does feel like fighting a losing battle really.

Thirdly, the novel has many interesting secondary characters that lend colour to the story and the relationship between our main couple. The younger brother-in-law and his outspoken but well-meaning wife create a contrast to the couple, the atypical mother-in-law who always has migraines, the hotheaded and salty younger brother and sickly younger sister, and a host of other characters that intertwine with our couple make for a very interesting and satisfying read.

The trajectory of this novel is what I actually wanted for the Rebirth of an Abandoned Woman, but I'm so glad that I found this instead and it's much better than I anticipated it to be.

Some of the cons: SPOILERS!!! PLEASE BEWARE!!!

In some parts, whereas everything else was well-detailed, they seem to just gloss over, especially the bit where they rescued the real hidden mother of one of the characters, the ML resolving the issues in one of his assignments, like they were very well-prepared and it felt too OP for some reason and other details. Either that or it was just gobbled up by the MTL hence why I wanted to read the proper translation.

I didn't really like the romance of the younger brother, others may like it, but I find this bit of the story doesn't seem to add something or it lacks a certain element. That's just me though.

It's a slow romance novel with heavy emphasis on the growing conflicts grievances between the noble family class and the common people class. It's quite interesting to read. I love the female lead integrity, grit, perseverance to do the right thing. Male lead is also similar in character which makes for a slow burn romance. Luckily the ML wants to challenge the status quo and pursue his wife. He is quite level-headed so events that could easily leads to misunderstandings are quickly addressed.

I am half way through the novel. Chapters... more>> are long but interesting. Good read overall. <<less

This is an incredible book with a lot going on. There's family issues, political intrigue, and interpersonal problems. But it's all very cohesive and drives the story forward in a well thought-out plot.

The romance is slow but enjoyable, and the author leaves no loose ends.

MTL requires some mental editing and reading between the lines, but if that doesn't put you off, I highly recommend this novel!

Oh man I'm liking this novel but it's not even halfway done yet. Although I'm only on chapter 13, I like the MC's character and her perseverance and ML character is understandable with them being married like that and then leaving and being gone for quite a while. Where can I find MTL of this?
