The day when the Crisis Management Office’s Psychological Adjustment Department was officially established, staff member Xie Zijing decided to pull out all the stops and passionately pursue his ex-boyfriend, Qin Ge, who seemed to be suffering from amnesia.

Department head Qin Ge also decided to pull out all the stops, first clearing the yellow waste that had overloaded Xie Zijing’s mind.

Note: The story has nothing to do with the real sea area; here “sea area” refers to the spiritual world in the minds of sentinels and guides.

4.5 stars.

I was hesitant to start this, given that there were no reviews when I read it, but this novel was a gem! This is a mystery novel, but it's more laidback and low stakes than most mystery novels. The main characters aren't on the front lines but constantly get involved because of the nature of their work. The most interesting part of the novel was how everything came together at the end, and also how the author uses some smaller cases as kind of a parallel to the main... more>> case the story revolves around (perhaps it is the author's way of subtly commenting on how a little kindness in the face of discrimination and hate goes a long way).

The plot and pacing of the story made it an engaging but also easy read (but be aware that the pacing is more relaxed compared to usually fast-paced mystery novels). Aside from that, I was also a fan of the cast of characters in this novel. I really enjoyed their dynamics and also how the MC went from not liking his colleagues to genuinely liking them and admiring their abilities as the novel went on. (It was also very cute how each of them had their own little romance plot!). The romance between the MC and ML was very cute, because the MC always tries so hard to be cold and objective but he has such a soft heart and he can't help but give in when the ML acts pitifully.

As for why I didn't rate the novel a full 5 stars, I had 2 main gripes. The first was with the world building. In this world, there aren't just normal humans, sentinels and guides like usual guideverse novels, but also werewolves, mermaids, vampires, half zombies, half petrified humans and more. However, the author didn't really expand on how these special individuals came about and how they ended up mixing with normal humans other than attributing it to mutations and viruses. Since the novel does focus on discrimination between normal humans and special individuals, I think it would definitely have elevated the story if there had been more detail on the past of how special individuals came to be in this world and their relations with humans. The second was one small part of the main leads' romance.

Spoiler

My gripe was with how they resolved the ML's amnesia. I thought the reasoning for his amnesia was very well explained, but I felt frustrated by how the MC dealt with it. He one-sidedly decided that it would be better that the ML never regains his memories of him. Like what?! I disagree! Additionally, the way the amnesia was resolved was so cliched. The ML regained his memories because he heard a happy mermaid song and felt emotional.

Regardless of the flaws, I still really enjoyed the novel and definitely highly recommend giving it a go. Thank you to the translator for their translation work as well! <<less

I really liked the story. The characters were memorable. I kind of like how the author mixed guideberse with other beings. The reasons I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is for the translation. There were enough he/her mix ups for it to be noticeable and maybe or 2 name mix ups.

The side couples are so cuteee! I find myself wanting to giggle out loud but can't because it's already midnight o (><) o AND MY SISTER IS SLEEPING BESIDE ME!

Their spirit animal is so interesting that I started googling it whenever I found it unfamiliar.

The sad part for me is that NO BABIES (Mpreg). That we sometimes find in other guide/sentinel novels. (。•́︿•̀。) I really want to see their babies~

This is an absolutely engaging, well written, thought provoking mystery. Like others said, the mystery unravels in what feels like a leisurely pace as the links between various people start emerging. I think the author is commenting on the butterfly effect one event might have on another, but in this case, I feel as a reader, I probably have a different view of the story from what the author intended.

Honestly, the mystery and backstory for the mystery is quite grim and pessimistic. If you think about it, the morally correct... more>> moves in many of the cases led to disaster. The author was very self righteous in condemning the crime in the first mystery, but if you think about it, isn't this whole novel a result of that crime not perfectly succeeding? And the real life versions of this is exactly why that crime being portrayed so black and white was disconcerting. Sure, the author tries to play off the negative outcome as the result of the largest shaping circumstances being outside of the person's control, but isn't that case for everyone at some point of their life, especially in the beginning? Another person is used as a foil later to show how surviving and kindness instead of fear from others can lead to a more hopeful outcome. But I think that almost emphasizes the precipice being born unwanted can be, and why people might think they are doing the right thing by committing a crime. This happens quite a bit throughout the novel. People who think they are acting according to what is best are unequivocally condemned. To be clear - they deserve to be condemned, but also to have some sympathy for their circumstances and the tough decision they had to make. I feel like if that had been the case, some of the really bad endings wouldn't have ended quite so horrifically.

That's the other thing about this story - the main side characters have sweet romances and great story lines. The more villainous side characters have pretty depressing endings with no redemption or hope or resolution. The ending is so sweet and loving and hopeful, but it's a bit hard to forget it's built on the destruction and torture and death of many side characters. That said, I really like this story. If you read it for just the main characters and their friends, it is an amazing story with mystery, adventure, and justice. I love the character development and the world building. I love the romantic developments and the couples. I love the mysteries and how they chain together like a looped bracelet. <<less

Really amazing. I haven’t read many guideverse novels, but this one definitely fit my taste. It’s a mystery, sort of police thriller novel, but with a supernatural touch. The story is quite touching at times, and the little cases are connected, with everything coming together in the end. What I really liked was that I found myself equally invested in the side couples, not just the main one. I usually skim through the romance of any side character, but for this novel, I thought they were all very cute, with... more>> very good development and endearing backstories (the little fish is very charming indeed). All in all, is a 5 stars for me, read every word, all the way to the end. <<less

It's a story that goes case by case with an overarching mystery. The cases itself weren't very complicated, but the main attraction for this story is probably the characters. The world itself also stood apart from other books, encompassing not just the guideverse but also all types of other supernaturals like werewolves and some more creative individuals like the tea lady.

The main cast had good camaraderie that build up throughout the book. I liked how QG eventually came to accept the department into his inner circle. I thought it... more>> was

genuinely a case of QG forgetting XZJ but that turned out to be a part of the biggest case in the book.

I especially liked the side characters; there's a few side CPs and all of them were adorable. I almost wished for more extras to see what happened to some of them.

Surprisingly I wanted more of CY. He wasn't a likeable character at the start but he kind of grew on me since by the end he was on their side.

It was also funny how everyone loves TC's panda and how cute BXY's kitty is.

Overall, I binged read the book with no regrets. <<less

When MC and ML met, ML claimed that they were ex-lovers

MC was sure they haven’t met before so he thinks ML has love delusion

^ this plot was initially very intriguing.

However, as the plot moved along, this became the lesser focus (for me) so it wasn’t that entertaining for me anymore. I also think that the MC and ML have lesser chemistry in the later plot of the story.

I really like the side couples though!

As for the twists, it was a series of well done coincidences.

Like dang, if only ___ did this or that, then maybe ___ wouldn’t have happened etc.

I think the suspense was well made but when everything was revealed, it was anti climatic for me

I wanted to drop reading this but I was hoping for something good in the ending chaps but it felt short
Spoiler

i would have love to read more about ML and his dad. How they talked about the traumatic experience, etc. these were all just brushed over so I was disappointed

[collapse]

Anyhooo it’s still a good read.

It’s mainly about solving crimes and finding out the real mastermind and how everything is actually interconnected

As for the romance, it’s okay but don’t expect too much as it really isn’t the main focus <<less
