The day when the Crisis Management Office’s Psychological Adjustment Department was officially established, staff member Xie Zijing decided to pull out all the stops and passionately pursue his ex-boyfriend, Qin Ge, who seemed to be suffering from amnesia.

Department head Qin Ge also decided to pull out all the stops, first clearing the yellow waste that had overloaded Xie Zijing’s mind.

Note: The story has nothing to do with the real sea area; here “sea area” refers to the spiritual world in the minds of sentinels and guides.

I was hesitant to start this, given that there were no reviews when I read it, but this novel was a gem! This is a mystery novel, but it's more laidback and low stakes than most mystery novels. The main characters aren't on the front lines but constantly get involved because of the nature of their work. The most interesting part of the novel was how everything came together at the end, and also how the author uses some smaller cases as kind of a parallel to the main... more>> case the story revolves around (perhaps it is the author's way of subtly commenting on how a little kindness in the face of discrimination and hate goes a long way).

The plot and pacing of the story made it an engaging but also easy read (but be aware that the pacing is more relaxed compared to usually fast-paced mystery novels). Aside from that, I was also a fan of the cast of characters in this novel. I really enjoyed their dynamics and also how the MC went from not liking his colleagues to genuinely liking them and admiring their abilities as the novel went on. (It was also very cute how each of them had their own little romance plot!). The romance between the MC and ML was very cute, because the MC always tries so hard to be cold and objective but he has such a soft heart and he can't help but give in when the ML acts pitifully.

As for why I didn't rate the novel a full 5 stars, I had 2 main gripes. The first was with the world building. In this world, there aren't just normal humans, sentinels and guides like usual guideverse novels, but also werewolves, mermaids, vampires, half zombies, half petrified humans and more. However, the author didn't really expand on how these special individuals came about and how they ended up mixing with normal humans other than attributing it to mutations and viruses. Since the novel does focus on discrimination between normal humans and special individuals, I think it would definitely have elevated the story if there had been more detail on the past of how special individuals came to be in this world and their relations with humans. The second was one small part of the main leads' romance.

Spoiler

My gripe was with how they resolved the ML's amnesia. I thought the reasoning for his amnesia was very well explained, but I felt frustrated by how the MC dealt with it. He one-sidedly decided that it would be better that the ML never regains his memories of him. Like what?! I disagree! Additionally, the way the amnesia was resolved was so cliched. The ML regained his memories because he heard a happy mermaid song and felt emotional.

Regardless of the flaws, I still really enjoyed the novel and definitely highly recommend giving it a go. Thank you to the translator for their translation work as well! <<less
