“What do you need, student?”

The man she met for the first time at the police station opened with that question.

“I… don’t need money, sir.”

“Sir,” when Park Chigyeong repeated the word to himself, his expression subtly changed.

She caught the slight furrow of his brow.

“I heard that’s what people call prosecutors. Did it… offend you?”

Exhaling a puff of cigarette smoke, he smiled faintly.

Was that a smile of annoyance or amusement?

Taeri couldn’t help but wonder.

“But why have you been acting so bold since earlier?”

Park Chigyeong, who had been casually exchanging nods with the detectives passing by, took a step closer.

“Student. Do you find it ridiculous because I’m being polite? Do you think we’re friends just because I’m smiling at you?”

At a distance where he could have touched her with just an outstretched hand, he leaned forward. His lips brushed against her ear as he whispered, his tone sharp as if he was grinding his teeth.

“Stop trying to provoke me and just name your price, kid.”

As Taeri stood in the lukewarm temperature of March, neither cold nor warm, she felt her palms slowly begin to sweat.

ML is definitely a walking red flag. domineering, disrespectful, and more often than not, downright mean and manipulative. And yet... I have to admit, I find his character so freaking HOT. Not just because the author wrote him as physically attractive, but because of the way he handles a situation. He doesn't just command the room; he is the power in the room. Goodness gracious.

I want to say I hate him for how he treats the FMC, but the shameless part of me wants to scream and spread my legs... more>> for this tall drink of water. I want this man periodt. This man can can step on me and I'd say thank you.

And he hates that he's obsessed with the FMC, mostly because she doesn't feel the same way. So he's constantly moody, his patience razor-thin whenever she denies him what he wants. But let me tell you, I am LIVING for it. There's just something about a cruel ML falling hard for a woman he can't fully control. Sure, he's manipulated her into staying, but deep down, what he truly craves is her unconditional devotion. He wants to own her completely. Mind, body, and soul. If he could, he'd control every aspect of her life, but he can't quite figure out how to make that happen. Hah. And I am loving every second of it. This dynamic has me in a chokehold.

As for the smut, I have no complaints. It's hot as hell.

The only downside is translation is still ongoing Will be camping out for more chapters, and major appreciation to the translator for their hard work. <<less

The first time I've felt compelled to leave a review on this site, but it's because this book fills me up with so much rage that there's nowhere else I can vent.

This book was so terrible that immediately afterwards I was so put off dark romance that I went on to read mainstream literary fiction (4 books in three days!).

Whoever wrote this book must have come directly off Wattpad and decided to try their hand at this with absolutely no research or understanding of the legal system. They had an... more>> idealized idea of a big, bad older "professional" ML smoking a ciggy, and they ran with that, to the point where his smoking could have been a third character in the book. I did not at any moment buy into the fact that she was a wealthy, overly sheltered girl from the first chapter, given the amount of plot holes presented right from the beginning: if she was champing at the bit, why was she in the police station alone? Where's her overprotective father? How could she go to a hotel room so late with nary a call from these incredibly overbearing parents?

That's right, like so many other inconsistencies presented in the book, her parents fade in and out of the plot like Snoopy adults, only appearing to be called "overprotective" and then fading away. Her wealth was another issue: she's so wealthy... and yet she's never been inside a private room of a restaurant before. She's so wealthy, and time and again, he astounds her with his wealth. Okay, I can buy that wealth is relative, but some commentary as to the differences would have not gone amiss.

Her intelligence was yet another issue: we're told she's so smart, that she got into a college that "only smart people get into" and yet we see OBVIOUS signs of idiocy, plus the fact that the guy who deep-fakes her p*rno pics went to the same college and is regularly called an idiot by everyone around them. Furthermore, with literally a couple months to go before graduating, said brilliant FL dropped out of college so that she can go on to the equally promising career of Uber driver (but without even her own car! Glorious!).

Here's what further makes no sense: mother and daughter are so poor after the father is framed and sent to jail, but... they rent two separate places in the same city? Said brilliant and talented girl can't get a job as a tutor or even a private music teacher?

Essentially, everything described by the author is then contradicted by the author in another part of the book, making the entire narrative lose its believability.

But let's get into the actual plot itself. We have the classic (cliched) plot of a man who wants a woman so much he manipulated her circumstances, threw her father in jail to "free" her, all so he can have really rough, non-lubed, painful s*x with her? Wait, this man who's utterly without conscience decided to reject her back in the day because she was underage? Yeah, you can see why it makes no sense at all.

The only enjoyable parts were when the author realized that they were writing themselves into an abyss no sane person could escape and would put comments from the characters like the FL asking herself "why are you so s*upid?" and ml's coworker saying "Are you crazy? You're a psychopath!"

A psychopath is a descriptor I can buy, but if we're going to see parts of the story from his POV, I'd like some justification to make it believable... because even psychopaths and sociopaths have their own logic, right?

But this man is just utter filth—and not just sexually. I mean that he m*sturbates while chain smoking in his bath, stubbing out the cigarette on the side of the tub. Oh, he also stubs it out on an expensive sofa, just to emphasize his wealth. He smokes five per chapter, and yet FL's keen and brilliant nose detects no smoke wafting from him, at all. (I worried for her. I could smell the smoke wafting from my phone.) As the cover correctly depicted the novel, he's smoking there as well, which is essentially what he does throughout the entire book—even while interrogating witnesses! He's so addicted to the cig he has her pull over on his Uber ride so he could have a smoke by the side of the road. At this point I couldn't tell if the book was commissioned by Big Tobacco, or Parents Against Smoking.

In any event, disjointed characterization, inadequate research, Wattpad level writing (complete with a page of italicized fever-dream type love poetry—the kind that goes i want you I want you I want you repeated for maximum emphasis). Just awful, really. <<less

I came here after reading season 1 of the manhwa adaptation!

This is the modern love story of Taeri, a college student in a well-off family who swiftly time-skips into a struggling adult with multiple jobs, and Park Chigyeong, a prosecutor 11 years her senior. The premise isn't entirely unfamiliar, but the execution and characters are distinct enough that the story is memorable.

Both FL and ML are flawed people. Taeri is smart and attractive, but she starts off bored of life and trying to act more mature than she is. Once... more>> her life takes a turn, she matures a bit but retains some fire. I like the vulnerability we see in her relationship with her mom and how that seems to carry into her relationship with Chigyeong's mom, despite her misgivings. She understandably has very mixed feelings about ML (same, girl, same). While she is a bit cringey pre-time-skip, I think that's pretty relatable.

ML is a handsome, rich, and successful prosecutor from a good (?) family. Pretty standard, right? His personality is a very acquired taste, though, and maybe not for the better. He's violent (not with FL), manipulative, and domineering. FL herself believes he is a sociopath. I'm not sure he really has any redeeming qualities so far except for maybe his loyalty and having some self-awareness? Still, I'm a sucker for fictional hot jerks with a soft spot for only one person. Even then, he says some mean things to FL on purpose to get her attention, so be warned.

I recommend reading this if you're okay with a toxic romance and a nearly "moralless" ML. The novel complements the manhwa well because it gives more details and insight into the characters' thoughts.

Not the best ML and the FL is dumb but she's not annoying the ML is way better written than her. And the scenes are hot. The ML is a huge red flag so keep in mind before u dive in. Their love is no slow burn infact it doesn't feel like love more like lust with a side of obsession and the stereotypical possessiveness but maybe it will develop better. It's better to say their love developed from the lust. Over all we are shown how ML keeps falling... more>> for her or well keeps getting more toxic with a side of gentle but why exactly? We don't see that like what drives her to him besides the fact that she's stubborn and apparently doesn't follow what he says

Another twisted sociopath ML with powerful background and a handsome face 😑 The age gap is 11 years btw. I'm giving this 2 stars for the excellent translation, they did really great and the web is really comfortable to use!

The plot is, if I try to summarize it in one sentence, about a hard-headed poor girl who made/got into one bad decision after another. This is a veeeeery plot driven story. Look, I'm all into stubborn, rebellious female MC, I LOVE them, but dear author, I wished you'd given her... more>> a personality too. In this novel, the ML is her personality, as in, she has no clear goal or dream or purpose that she is working towards. All throughout the chapters I've read she was just dragged here and there, either following or refusing ML. MC is so bland, imo.

And the ML. Ugh. DO NOT LET YOURSELF BE FOOLED BY "I CAN FIX HIM" MENTALITYYY. The s*x scenes aren't even that good assfjfjaaitzd😡 (for example, compare it to Doppio Senso or The Most Perfect Wife).

Even the characters from ML's workplace seem to only serve as a tool to assert his masculine, cold, agressive, controlling persona.

Okay, at this point I understand that this novel simply doesn't suit my taste. BUT I WAS EXPECTING SO MUCHHHH FROM THE AGE GAP PREMISE HUHUHU its mild to say that I was disappointed 😭 it was all just about a h**ny 35 year old sociopath who happens to have good face good body good career and good family background. <<less
