In the fifteenth year of the Chenghua Dynasty, the usurper Ning Chen finally died. The youngest left minister since the founding of the dynasty, his power extended over all the realm, and his methods were as ruthless as his heart. He formed a party around himself in order to extend his private interests, and assassinated loyal ministers who resisted his cause. In the end, a thousand arrows pierced his heart before the royal palace, and he died.

At that moment, Emperor Li Wuting was standing before the palace, gazing down at him as if he were nothing more than an ant.

The night after Ning Chen died, Li Wuting reincarnated to the day he took the throne.

In his last life, he put his trust in an obsequious official, causing chaos in his court. This time, he resolved to strangle the problem in the cradle.

***

When Ning Rushen transmigrated from the modern era, it was the first year of the Chenghua Dynasty, and the new emperor was ascending to the throne.

In the solemn court, he saw the emperor who had just taken his place walk down the hall until he came to a stop before him. Killing intent surfaced in the depths of his eyes.

Ning Rushen, who had just transmigrated: …What’s wrong?

Seeing a swift slap about to land on him, Ning Rushen suddenly fell to his feet before the eyes of the court! His face was as pale as snow, and the corners of his eyes were red, like a delicate little white flower swaying before the wind.

The officials cried, “Your Majesty, have mercy!”

The new emperor, Li Wuting, who hadn’t even touched him: ???

Ning Rushen wiped away the tears at the corners of his eyes and let out a little sob: This official is so weak.

Li Wuting smiled. What a wonderfully obsequious official 🙂

***

Afterwards, Li Wuting slowly discovered that this delicate flower was not only fresh, but also rather sweet at its core.

Cute fluffy historical novel.

I like the comedic overtone, though the translation leaves much to be desired.

Translation basically reads like MTL -> pass through ChatGPT/AI rewrite without human proofreading.

Spoiler

Tons of easily caught pronoun mix-ups. Tons of double-negatives mistranslated. Lots of phrases translated incorrectly or without the proper context.

Eg. "Xiao Huangwen" = "little p*rn book" not whatever the translator wrote.

[collapse]

Kinda sad the direction translation has taken these days.

Every chapter is so hilarious lolXD

This is like a skit, and no solid plot. It has a plot but not deep, more on sand sculpture slice of life.

It's so funny how the people around MC and ML had misunderstandings about them, thinking they were closeted in love. Rather, it started with ML being reborn knowing the insidiousness of Ning Chen (owner of the body), but our MC transmigrated into that body. So he kept the MC by his side to guard against him, originally.

However, I got bored eventually. Having a sand sculpture genre in a historical novel is not suitable in some aspect. I suggest to finish it in one go so u won't get bored (or it might just be me since I have a short attention span). <<less

A silly and funny novel, tons of hilarious characters, light plot. Although they get together pretty late into the story, their relationship gets sweet and cute way before that. If you like sand sculpture characters, this novel is definitely for you.

I also love that
Spoiler

ML never wanted MC to become an "empress" confined to a palace, he would rather hide their relationship and let MC develop his ambitions and be respected by everyone as his own person, not as ML's spouse.

A Fantastic novel and delightfully funny! I really like novels where both the MC and the ML are complex characters, and this is certainly one of those. The biggest compliment I can pay is that I think the MC and ML would be in a relationship in real life, their chemistry is both hilarious and realistic in the best way possible.

I really like that the ML lost all sense of animosity towards the MC very early on in the novel, he is a truly reasonable character and a great leader... more>> while also being a good person in his own way, willing to admit to and correct his own errors.

The MC is goofy and absent minded, also slightly careless but that doesn't stop him from being competent at his job and also a great man-manager in a realistic sense.

Overall, fantastic work, I enjoyed reading it a lot! <<less

I didn’t wanna review this cuz then it’ll mean the story is over. I was hooked on the comedy as well as the subtle development of the relationship between the two leads. There was no brain dead plot point that forced the two together and we clearly see the development of feelings before things progress. 100% comedy from the MC, even though it sometimes goes to the level of crack. I thoroughly enjoy the pampering from the ML, even though he himself wasn’t aware of it at first. The brothers... more>> and servants were the OG shippers lol the only plot holes came from their brain holes. <<less

The first half of this story is funny so I couldn’t put it down haha

It has been awhile since I’ve read a novel I like so I really needed this 💖 Thanks to the author and translator!

It also has a bit of angst but those get resolved in a chapter or two

The romance is also really sweet, the ML is powerful but not cold or overbearing

Everything just feels right 💖

I couldn't take this story after reading a dozen chapters. (I don't know why it says status: Completed and I can't change it)

I can't tell if this is practically unedited mtl, bad writing or both. Usually I don't star a review for a story I haven't finished but this one was so irritating I felt it deserved it.

The sentence structure is abysmal. Names seem mixed up. More than once, the MCs name would be wrong for half a chapter. The punctuation, especially when there is dialog, is all over... more>> the place. Verb tenses meander from present to past and back again constantly.

The writing comes across as very stiff with nothing but the basics. There's very little put in about the setting except its the first year of Chenghua and a little bit of the color of the palace - and that the size of his house seems appropriate for an official of his level. People just show up, there's no introduction for them (except for a Prince - couldn't figure out if he was a brother or uncle to the emperor) - which is exacerbated by the fact that the pronouns are frequently wrong. One scene jolts to the next with no transitions making it difficult to figure out what's going on. The characters (including the leads) are just cardboard cutouts occasionally making strange/dumb jokes for the sake of the story.

Without the summary I wouldn't have a clue about what was happening in the first chapters which, by the way, started with big plot holes.

Spoiler

All you find out is that the MC was a teacher at a school who fell down the stairs then he's transmigrated. He doesn't know what his position is, who the emperor is, why the emperor hates him, but magically he doesn't make an incredible breach of protocol, seems to know how the court in that dynasty works without hints, the right amount of currency to give to people (which changes year to year let alone centuries) and all sorts of other details. Was he a professor of ancient history with perfect recall, specializing in that particular dynasty and every detail of the culture that he's almost perfectly proficient? Second, he also only has about two paragraphs of being surprised about his transmigration and then that's the end of it. Doesn't wonder why, no explanation nothing. Third, he figures out he wants to resign immediately before he even knows what his position really is? Or what's going on with the emperor? This only comes several chapters later with the dude who was an enemy for the first few chaps who then suddenly flips and is a fountain of information and a decent buddy for no reason.

Then there's the emperor. He only wonders about being reborn at his crowning for a few minutes, then he's fine and is all about stopping his nemesis. Again, no confusion, questioning anything. Also there's why he suddenly assigns him to the Imperial Study Room. Demotion? Promotion? Moving him somewhere he can't do anything? What does this mean? And no deep suspicion about why the evil villain is immediately different supposedly because he bumped his head a little. No, what is he up to? Why different from how he acted the first time around? (The reader is never told how the original character behaved in that situation at all)

Really wasn't worth my time to go any further to find out if the story could find its feet. <<less

It's a sweet slow romance. I can't say the translation is the best with mistakes in pronouns, grammer, etc but it is still understandable and it does get wayyy better in the later parts of the novel. Especially near the end where it's describing their romance.

A 3.5 - made me cry towards the end so I added 0.5.

I actually feel like the story could maybe have been slightly better, but the translation is bad and some nuances potentially got lost. Pronouns all over the place, dialogue where you don't really understand what they're saying... Things like that. Better than MTL, but not by much.

All in all it's an okay story. It's quite light-hearted, even the conflicts that arose were solved quite easily and there wasn't much adversity at all. A bit anticlimactic at times, I... more>> thought, especially the "villains" that were conjured at the end and did a bunch of nothing before being disposed of. I feel like this story will be best enjoyed by those that want fluff and romance and don't care that much about world-building or plot. I'm quite the opposite so I found myself skipping A LOT of paragraphs with just pure slice of life or fluffy, unimportant moments. Which is the majority of the novel. And then when we get to some juicy conflict, it doesn't lead anywhere significant in the end.

My main complaint that has nothing to do with personal preferences, is MC's characterization. I found it quite inconsistent. First he was presented has a clever and cunning person, with the wits to navigate the emperor and fool everyone, but this path is discarded quite quickly and no one cares about him being different anymore. Then he does a complete 180 from the first chapters and is a bit unaware at times, and then his brain comes online again and somehow he's a political genius. But as the novel progresses he turns silly and like a completely different person in front of the emperor vs everyone else. I don't know, although all these traits aren't mutually exclusive, they seemed to contradict themselves at times, making MC's personality a bit hard to describe exactly. <<less

Perhaps this is MTL version. Especially dialogues are hard to understand. Unfortunately I don't know Mandarin...

The story itself is very interesting, that's why although the MTL version caused me a migraine, I still can't bear to drop this novel. 4 stars for the story.

What a fun book. There is a bit of a plot hole - it doesn't fully explore why the rebirth or transmigration happens - but the story and relationship is really sweet.

The power dynamic and fetishizing of the relationship with the Emperor was slightly off-putting towards the end, but I think the author pulls away from that quickly enough that it isn't too big of a deal.

I love the brothers - wish they got their own happy relationship. Unfortunately, in this book, none of the side characters really develop much... more>> of a life outside of amplifying and assisting the main couple.

I didn't think the story was that comedic, but it was definitely a bit light hearted, the relationship pacing is slow and steady, and the overall feeling I'm left with was happy contentment. <<less
