SUMMARY

Yet another one of those Korean dungeon + timetravel genres written in 2018.

Fairly interesting take by focusing on a forgotten profession in dungeon economics... the talent scout/agent. Think of it as the dungeon version of "Top Management". But otherwise poorly executed and structured.

PREMISE

MC is yet another loser with low aptitude and low self-esteem. He gets a second-chance to relive his previous 5 years through a random time-travel cheat at the sacrifice of his brother, gaining more cheat-like powers + the ability to identify talented hunters.

ISSUES

(1) Nothing particularly new... as usual

I Alone Level Up / Solo Leveling (2014) -- dungeons + loser + timetravel + new powers + guilds

Top Management (2015) -- talent scout/manager (entertainment) + future foresight

The Tutorial is Too Hard (2016) -- dungeons + national/factional real world guilds

Everyone Else is a Returnee (2016) -- dungeons + real world guilds

The Second Coming of Gluttony (2017) -- loser + dungeons (tutorial) + timetravel + factional powers

(2) Disappointing MC

At the beginning we're led to believe MC has turned over a new leaf, is no longer a useless jelly person after his BROTHER SACRIFICED HIS LIFE TO SAVE HIM. We're led to believe MC will work hard with his newfound powers. Instead we get an MC that...

slacks off after discovering his first 4 talents (the pet Peace, the 15-yr old loli, the failed mechanic, and the aloof guardian). MC openly states his desire to just coast with his newfound powers, so he can hide in the background while raising powerful characters to protect him. WTF.

You can tell the author probably storyboarded till Chapter 30+ before writing the novel, because that's when MC switches his desire from building a team (humans) to raising pets and decided to slack off. It's easy to see filler creeping up.. MC's thought processes start going all over the place. He has no concrete goal. He wants to play with stocks using his future knowledge.

Am with @rhianirory, it's awkward when people misunderstand MC's intentions of raising down-and-out side characters. They think MC is a selfless individual, but MC didn't really care about their circumstances, he just wants to milk their talents. i.e. he identified their talents first, wanted to raise them, THEN realized their poor backgrounds. There's something VERY wrong with that sequence.

And it gets even more confusing with the pointless pet Peace. Just a randomly inserted cute side-character mascot that you typically see in Disney movies (think Olaf the snowman from Frozen, Thumper from Bambi, or that s*upid chicken in Moana). So just because MC likes pets and acts embarrassingly cutesy with it all the time, therefore he is a proper caregiver?

That's the big DISCONNECT between MC's personality/character and his powers. It would've made sense if MC had historically grown up taking care of his younger brother, if MC realizes his love for his brother afterwards and reverted back to being a caring character, etc. But that never happens. It's just more and more awkwardness and MC has a lot of difficulty accepting his role as a caregiver.

It's the equivalent of the irreverent fun-loving Peter Parker being bitten by a radioactive spider, and turning into the aloof ultra-violent Punisher.

(3) Tired/flawed joke on MC's "Caregiving" powers

The Caregiving/talent identification power is interesting, but the emphasis on the awkward method of invoking his power gets old really fast.

MC has to say "I love you", leading to awkward misunderstandings. There's a weird tension between side-characters since they all become clingy to MC and jelly of each other.

The repercussions of the power are pretty s*upid too.

It's basically a charm-type power. Side-characters associate MC with close individuals in their own life (e.g. family, significant other, etc). So if side-characters are enamored of the MC, it's not necessarily under free-will. There's something VERY wrong with a "Caregiver" that only gets affection via "mind-control". To use a reeaaally old example, think Love Potion #9. The older Millennials will (should hopefully) get that reference.

(4) Incoherent system mechanics

Not sure if it's a translation issue, but the system mechanics don't make any sense.

-- Powers are randomly assigned to boost abilities by XX%. We have no idea what any of that actually means. Author constantly reminds readers that a 10% boost is crappy (E Class), and somehow to 20% or higher boost is amazing.

-- Some weird combination of those ranks/skills averages out. Literally, "F-rank + S-class skill = C-rank". HUH??

-- The system is incomplete and confusing... not only are explanations insufficient,

we're suddenly told that the System is manually operated behind-the-scenes by incompetent God/higher power, which just adds to more confusing System descriptions. Very poor plot device.

-- Leveling mechanics gets randomly introduced mid-conversation / mid-event when author realized he failed to give proper explanations earlier.

Suddenly we're told there's 10 levels per rank, suddenly we're told some ranks need more XP than others (it's also the first time we're introduced to XP), suddenly there are random calculations that an S-rank would need to run the dungeon X times to level up, suddenly we're told F-rank can wear A-rank items and basically be at the level of C-rank. Huh?

While authors shouldn't rely on excessive exposition, randomly shoving in system mechanics midway is incongruous and extremely poor writing. <<less

I started reading a couple months ago, but stopped because I was a little put off by the MC. He was frustratingly contradicting -- clearly loves and wants to help his brother but his inner thoughts seemed pretty self-centered. I picked it up again about a week ago and now I'm obsessed. I won't say much about the plot since it's well summarized by other reviewers, but I will say it's a little messy. However it eventually finds a nice balance between action/adventure and slice of life with many emotional... more>> moments that genuinely moved me. I do want to cover/vent about a couple things (slight spoilers below).

About the MC:

I see some reviewers saying the MC annoyed them, which I totally get. Like I said, my first impression was that he was a pretty selfish guy who decides to turn a new leaf and be a caring older brother -- but continues thinking in a mostly self-interested way. However, over the course of the story I noticed a dissonance between how he thinks about himself and what he actually does. For example, he decides he wants to become a trainer of monsters so he can beat dungeons, get high-class items, and live comfortably. However, he spends most of the time trying to ensure a better future for those around him despite being a F-class surrounded by high-class hunters. He also tries to prevent many deaths that happened pre-regression (even though they had nothing to do with him) by either endangering himself or putting himself in a position that he has to do more work. Outwardly he seems like a manipulator who uses others to get what he wants (and he views himself this way often) but he expresses feeling guilty that he can't take care of everything on his own and says he wants to avoid depending on others as much as possible.

I could go on and on, but I believe the main arc of the MC (and kinda the story as a whole) is his struggle with guilt about being "selfish" when the reality is he's too selfless -- to the point he doesn't value himself highly enough. His guilt and self image seem to stem from his trauma of getting pushed away by his brother and being alone for 5 years. This extremely dark part of his life gets brushed off pretty quickly after his regression, but when it comes up throughout the story there are glimpses of how badly those years affected the MC's perception of himself. He starts the story with an inferiority complex that affects most of of his interactions, but over time he starts to realize others value him as a person on not just because of his skills. It's heartbreaking but also makes the moments he allows himself to feel happy post-regression even sweeter.

About the BL elements:

I see so many reviewers and comments either being annoyed that the story feels like a BL harem or others confused why the author hasn't labelled it as BL. I have to admit there are MANY scenes that feel straight out of a BL, specifically between Yoojin and Hyunjae. They're pretty tame but so frequent that it feels like a stretch to say they were written purely for comedy -- and I hope they weren't because that would be too queerbaity. HOWEVER, I personally like that there isn't any BL labelling. This isn't a romance, that's not the point of the story, but that doesn't mean there can't be feelings or chemistry between the characters. There are countless stories where the MC is heavily implied to have a romantic connection with another character, but it's pushed to the background. I think we're so used to seeing this happen between characters of different genders that when it's implied between same-s*x characters we reactively think it should be a major part of the story and labelled that way. Personally, I'm fine with it and hope we see more great stories like this in the future. Leave the blatant romantic stuff to the fanfic writers (I will gladly read those too ^^).

So yeah, sorry to ramble. These are just things I might have liked to know going into the story. I highly recommend for anyone who likes stories about found family, learning to be happy after trauma, and fun fight scenes mixed with cute, fluffy moments. <<less

I was irritated for the first few chapters; it's possible to be physically weak without letting other people walk all over you and the MC seems to be spinless and weak-willed despite being a regresser. He's basically being kept by his rich, overbearing, super-strong and obsessive (borderline yandere) little bro and their interactions (and character types) made me check for a BL tag three times in the first seven chapters. Other than that, as a general rule, I'm not a fan of stories with lots of misunderstandings, though I don't... more>> mind the mistaken for bas*ss type when done right. The story does get better around c15, though I find his friends/ followers/ brother to be so clingy that it's creepy (I'm not good with clingy/ needy people). Don't get suckered by the tr*sh count comparisons; this is a different genre and the MC isn't nearly as clever and conniving as our favorite redhead. <<less

This novel will surprise you with hidden depths, chapters down the line. I have to admit the writing style takes some getting used to--it's MC's perspective, a reckless, fearless (literally in his case), headstrong young man trying to mend his relationship with his (physically stronger, more handsome, better) younger brother. The flavor is very shonen-y and some questionable topics (ab*se, harassment, misogyny, inherent sociopathy in some people) are handled rather lightly.

And then we get further into the plot, delved around the reason MC wished to turn back time: his brother's... more>> awakening, estrangement, and death. It's both good and bad for me because I'm not really a fan of the very game-esque lingo and mechanics, but the sprinkles of information is tonnes better than infodump, while also working to further the plot as MC discovers the hidden side to whatever's going on in his world.

Pros for me:

  • Family fluff to the extreme, both of the blood and found kind.
  • MC is sass king, literal twig tr*shing people with muscle mass twice his weight.
  • Younger brother is literally the cinnamon roll who can and will kill you all in one package.
  • Character development all around!!!
  • Seong Hyeonjae.
Cons:

  • Very heavy game lingo
  • Seong Hyeonjae.
TLDR: fantastically developed unreliable narrator MC ft. Family feels, action, and issues. Not BL, but some very heavy undertones to that front. I guess if endgame isn't BL then /shrug/ it isn't BL. <<less

The MC of this novel reminds me of the MC from tr*sh of the Count's Family. Through a series of misunderstandings (lowkey brainwashing), the MC is quietly collecting talents and followers for the future!

Summary: After witnessing his younger brother die for him, the MC goes back in time 5 years before the incident to turn over a new leaf and live a quiet, peaceful life. But of course, things never go as the MC plans as new talents and followers keep popping up left and right, tempting the MC to... more>> gather them into his ever growing fan club! The plot is exciting, but not with full blown drama and action. It's an engaging read!

Besides the MC, we have a younger brother with a brother complex, a daughter figure, a new friend, a bodyguard, and the most important, a fluffy cat! Each side character comes with their own unique background story and characteristics, making it extremely easy to recognize who's who in the storyline.

Overall, I can't wait for new updates! How I wish I could read fluent Korean aiya! <<less

After reading like 800+ chapters I can finally give my thoughts about this series. Personally, it's up into my alley and one of my fav series but I think it's not really for everyone's taste.

First off if you're not into possessive or borderline yandere characters then this is NOT for you because most of the characters have at least one yandere-ish moment, heck even some antagonists are yandere for MC (not sure if this is the author's fetish or something).

For the little brother, the possessiveness is actually explained. The reason being he's not actually human and is more of a personification of fire. Originally he wasn't supposed to be able to mesh into human society or bond with anyone. But through the MC giving him unconditional love to something that's not human even by sacrificing the love of their parents when they were kids, he was able to see the world through the teaching of the MC. This is why he would immediately kill himself if the MC died first, because MC is literally his world. It still doesn't justify his extreme action but it's understandable since he doesn't understand humans way of thinking.

As the title says, this series is focusing on MC and his weird S-Class people with different personalities and quirks which gave birth to some really funny interactions. There's even one who thinks MC is the reincarnation of their mother even tho they are much older than MC. The characters are fun and personally my fav part of the series. They get more fleshed out with more chapters. If you thought you know everything about the character, watch as the author brought their story again but with more details and new facts. MC is consistently a weak F-Class but still kicks ass with his unique skill sets and has some cool fight scenes.

I feel like up until chapter 100 is introduction to the characters, chapter 100+ is build up to the story, and chapter 200+ is when the story starts getting more solid, where we finally getting longer arcs, introduced to the main antagonists, and got to know more about the characters origin and how it all ties up to the whole plot. Sadly it's all blocked off by the lack of translations for the rest of the chapters. Which is why I think most people have only tasted the surface of this series and deserve to read the rest with better translations. Especially with how the author likes to explain the main plot bit by bit throughout the series, which is both the GOOD and WEAK point of this series. It makes the main plot itself a bit hard to follow.

Remember that random celebrity guy Park Hayul in chapter 44 who we never see again? Yeah apparently he will become one of the antagonist in ch350 and ch700+. One time we have life and death battle, other time we have like fishing competition arc, cops and robber with a twist, game of life, and even crashing someone's wedding arc. Wild yes.

I read the raws. To note, people have the misconception that the MC is always going to be superhuman. The MC is not in this novel. In fact the MC is weak physically and mentally unstable after receiving all of his younger brother's emotions and memories after he sacrificed himself.

The MC is only stronger than most average humans and weaker than all other hunters. He tries to repair the broken relationship with his younger brother (Even though the little brother can kill him accidentally by applying a little bit of... more>> strength). The main difference between other novels is that the MC has very low potential. He simply cannot ever hope to match the sheer power of an S-rank, its like two different species: one is an ant the other an elephant. No matter how strong a single ant gets it can never match an elephant. Despite this knowledge, the MC still regularly interacts with these S-ranks who can kill him on a whim (albeit thanks to a skill that prevents fear).

To note, the development is slow. However this is because the main focus of this novel is family bonds, interactions between friends, mental trauma and psychological growth. Not kill the villain and save the world. <<less

I finish the novel❤️

It's funny but a lot of the reviews here don't read the novel, especially kkgoh. One of my favorite novels and no plot holes (other famous novels have plot holes/too OP). Yuhyeon sacrificed his life? Baka, if you read the novel you will know whose struggle is heavier. And many have misunderstood Yujin's wishes, he doesn't want revenge, he just wants to be with his younger brother and live comfortably. This novel is full of love, it is very enjoyable. Interesting premise, simple characters. I like "misunderstanding" tag novels, when they don't feel inappropriate (Like s*xual misunderstanding.) and rude (When person is disregarded when he shows humility.), just plain simple joking misunderstanding, and this novel has exactly this.

The title is clickbait, he's not even raising anyone he just awakens them like what the association could do. He just picks those people who's a guaranteed S ranks so it's the same as doing nothing at all.

Also the characters are way too annoying, like I get they are stronger than the MC when it comes to stats but they are all bullies. The MC is also a complete idiot with his optimistic outlook, these S ranks just used S-SS skills on him and just because he's resistant to these... more>> so called skills doesn't mean he should just let it go. The thing is these people don't know of his skills so they're definitely meant to harm him and he's like "oh it's cool".

This started out great but the interactions between the idiotic MC and SCs are so cringe, it's like they all wanna fvck the MC because of they had mommy or daddy issues or something. Also it's the same dialogue bordering obsessiveness and possessiveness. The plot barely moves forward because of these cringe inducing interactions and the useless narrative of "this happened in the past”. <<less

So far so good

The novel is quite different compared to the usual second chance novel where the MC usually uses his knowledge to become the center of the limelight. Because on this novel the MC would uses his abilities to become the support of the so called Main Characters.

And I also like the misunderstandings that kinda happen on this novels, and on how the other characters wants to monopolize our MC, yep yandere vibes~

Also the skills are a mess - which is actually a great idea, just poorly executed. For me, everything feels as if the MC was intended to be a cool manager type of character (similar to the korean novel "Top Manager"), but halfway through the author decides to make the MC more badass and adds really weird developments, just to abandon them further down the road.

For those that don't want to read a long review here's a summary of the pros/cons up until I read, obviously this is my opinion and others are free to think differently.

PRO:

  • Not the typical OP character (but still OP)
  • Side characters who aren't just throw away (Author takes time to flash them out and uses them throughout the story, not just for a couple chapters)
  • The selling point: Raising S-Rankers (OP characters), and sticking to it
  • Comedy that's not too overused or too boring
CON:

  • Characters develop too quickly IMO
  • Semi-Typical overpowered MC
  • Bit heavy on racism against Japanese (Only shows up in several chapters just be ready for it, please understand that relationship between the two nations are still rocky, sincerely a Korean that's not happy with the amount of racism)

Semi-typical because it's not the OP himself that becomes ridiculously strong but how he finds people with Talent and brings out their maximum talent (and because he can turn other people OP that in turn gives the MC a wealth of privileges). Politics play a part in the story such as between governments and between guilds. Word of warning though, the novel is preeetty darn racist against Japanese (at least up until I read), and this is coming from a Korean, but thankfully not every chapter is mired by this. The selling point of the story is obviously finding and raising the 'S-Rankers' as the title states and it does a good job of sticking to it although personally I would have liked for the characters to develop slower. Instead of starting crappy and slowly developing into an S-ranker, a lot of the characters either start great and turn OP, or start crappy and turn OP because of MC unlocking a skill. If this is a turn-off keep in mind the process does take several/dozens of chapters and time does pass in-story to justify the characters developing. On a positive note, the author does take the time to flash out the characters, the S-rankers doesn't go to the MC, the MC seeks out the S-rankers, learns about them, and goes about earning their trust. But unfortunately, while we learn a good deal about the characters, the S-rankers are IMO, a little too quick in trusting the MC. <<less

I love this novel so much. I blitzed through all 166 chapters back a couple months ago in like less than 4 days I think. I reread it again a couple days ago and reached chapter 173. I can definitely see why it's one of the big three webnovels in the Korean community, along with Omniscient reader's viewpoint and tr*sh of the Count's family. The protagonist isn't overpowered right off the bat, and what skills and powers he later acquires is less for combat and more for defense and to... more>> help the growth of the S classes he is "raising" (hence the name haha funny me). I adore the protagonist and how he does things. He's sassy, is very mature about some decisions, knows how to address and present himself to people. He's manipulative in a way that Kim Dokja and Cale Henituse seem to have in common. And I absolutely adore the dynamics between Han Yoojin (the protagonist) and the other characters, especially Han Yoohyun, Sung Hyunjae, and Peace. From the rest of the reviews, it seems that other people struggled reading through the beginning because of the heavy world building. I personally love the world building. I had a lot of questions in the first chapter and was very happy it was addressed in the following chapters. Another complaint I see common in the reviews is that there isn't any plot line. Remember this story is WAY behind the untranslated chapters, as of the time of this review there is over 600 untranslated chapters and only 173 translated chapters. I looked at forums and apparently the plot line is much more concrete and obvious as the chapters go on, that it's only left vague in the beginning to establish the relationship building and other stuff.

Han Yoojin is just very passive in the beginning since it seemed he had an inferiority complex about his younger brother, along with some other major factors that are implied later on. So he just tends to roll along with what some people do, but there are a lot of moments when he does put his foot down. He's clever and sassy. Because one of his skills neutralizes his fear of just about anything, some actions he does may seem dense and/or reckless, but it's just the dude has like no self preservation instincts. It drives his wards and family crazy and I love it. This story isn't necessarily action heavy, but when it does get to those scenes it's described in a way that leaves little to the imagination. I'm sorry if my review seems a little all over the place, and is a little cryptid. This is my first review on this site even though I've read many other novels. I wanted to write of how much I love this novel and its MC without going too into detail. The story does get heavier on the plot later on in the untranslated chapters, and it also adds much more character and relationship building with the MC and other characters, new and old.

As a reader I very much enjoyed this novel and can't wait for the day to read it in its entirety. I completely understand that this novel isn't every ones cup of tea though, so it's ok to take it slow and if you decide you don't like it then that's fine. Don't force yourself. But if some of the reviews are deterring you from even glancing at the first chapter then please reconsider and try giving it a chance. I'll never regret starting this novel ^^. <<less

Solid 2.5/5. Would have been a 3 if it was a web novel, but this is actually already a light novel that has gone through an editor.

Premise is actually very great. Instead of an strong main, focusing on creating them has an enormous potential. The story could focus on more of the side characters, main teaching future training methods, combat methods, fighting formations, even crafting, resource gathering, taming, mana application etc. Because it involves time traveling.

But nope, after the regression immediate problems occurred in the story: The most important person... more>> in his life - his brother doesn't have any defining character other that being overly caring towards a single person to the point of being obsessive.

After the little brother comes the next appearance - bodyguard Kim sung han - after chapter 50 becomes irrelevant.

Yerim - very generic female character.

Blacksmith - is gone 90% of the time

After these 1st side characters suddenly pets come in. They don't actually contribute to the story at all except by making the main important - which is NOT the point of the story. He should be important because of "The S-Classes That I Raised".

When the story progresses, for some reason the main doesn't awaken any new character - doesn't matter if it is A rank or B. His skill is OPTIMIZED awakening. So A or B should be raised to higher levels. So currently its very obvious that the author doesn't intend to create more or develop any existing characters.

Still it is a ̶g̶o̶o̶d̶ read to pass the time during corona. <<less

Starts fun, but later it becomes complete brain f... I mean author tries to hard to make it epic, plot became so un-logical and forcefully twisted that I was speechless

I can nearly promise you, that if you read spoilers you will drop this novel :P

As usual, Korean dialogue is extremely awkward, and just they way characters interact with each other is just cringe worthy. Premise in the beginning was good, he rebirths and wants to be a better brother, although he seemed to fix his crappy relationship with his younger brother very easily, just by saying "I love you." Speaking of the younger brother, he has great potential to be massively yandere. He has showcased his various yandere tendencies by stalking, spying and imprisoning his brother on multiple occasions.

The way the plot and dialogue... more>> is written is just vague. Characters would refer to something without actually mentioning it, and I'm probably too s*upid to realise or draw inferences, but there was simply not enough context for my small brain to do so.

Character development goes off track. In the beginning he wanted to help his brother, then he wanted to raise some s-classes, then he wanted to raise pets, then he want's to raise s-classes again. His motives and drives are unclear, and there is really no reason given as to why he strives for these things. Of course a reason isn't necessary, but it will make his character development better and less nonsensical.

Anyway, dropped after almost 100 chapters because I can't bear with this nonsense anymore. <<less

Monster dad gets 5 stars from me.

It is a very interesting take on the setting of other books like soel station necromancer where there are dungeons in real life and the MC goes back in time for a redo.

But unlike a lot of those that feel like power fantasy (not that I mind) this one has an MC that isn't as intrested in raising his own personal power as he is in raising the power of others. The characters while somewhat simple are all believable to some extent and nothing... more>> has really shattered my suspension of disbelief.

I find my self looking forward to each weeks release and that is enough to earn a 5 star from me. <<less

This is most definitely my favourite Korean novel. It's interesting and funny and hurts my soul like no other.

And before anyone gets turned away at the beginning of the novel by how quickly MC forgives his brother--THERE WERE MAJOR REASONS FOR HIS ACTIONS. It will be expanded upon later. It doesn't just get swept under the rug and disappear. The reasons are legitimate and worrying, and although Yoohyun could have handled it better, he was a CHILD when everything started to go wrong. Now for the review--

The men are diverse, the women are QUEENS, and MC is a goddamn princess. There are so many cute kids, human, adult, beast, or something else entirely, and I love how he loves them.

I love and feel pained over how he essentially hollows himself out just so he can offer up his everything to his kids. Whether for their happiness, memories, or lives, he's willing to be tortured and slowly rot away on the inside with a smile on his face. He's broken and he knows it, but can't and won't change it. He doesn't want them to know and tries to be the adult in every situation.

I love how the kids love him. How he becomes their world and the different relationships they develop.

I love how the big "good guys" aren't always good. That they're suspicious and this continues to be expanded upon. That different people in the group have different opinions and actions. It makes me think and keeps me on my toes.

I love his interactions with Sung Hyunjae. They alternate between the most out-of-pocket, off-the-wall conversations and deep, sad glimpses into how damaged MC is.

Obviously there are differences between the novel and the manhwa, major ones being that some characters and plot were cut. Though the biggest thing is that the manhwa replaced a lot of the soul-crushing moments, where MC is buckling under the weight of so many problems that no therapy will ever be able to fix, with comedy. Of course, comedy isn't bad, but I just wish they'd been able to make it more like the novel. And frankly, without the introspection of written text, the manhwa portrays him as a lot less jaded and depressed.

As for the novel--Is it queer baiting? Yes. Do I believe that MC and Sung Hyunjae are secretly gay for each other? Also yes. Do I believe that MC could start a harem if he really wanted to? Also also yes. Would he? No.

Anyway, I definitely recommend reading this. Prepare for heart pain and heart break. You're about to read about a shattered glass house that never learned to take care of itself and a bunch of lost children who come to love each of its shards. <<less

Personally, I love this. The fluff, the brocon brother, the protective daugther, the firstly anxious become protective bestfriend, the MC's pursuer but male (bl or not still Questionable), and of course, his pets! Easy 10/5 for me!

Edit:

I changed my mind about the objective review after reading a spoiler. This story is clearly 4.5/5. What an interesting plot twist.
