I love the MC so much well you could think he's mean at first but he's actually the sweetest person ever so do give it a try. And his unofficial adopted kids and his relationship is honestly very satisfying to read. (Spoilers maybe) even his former teammates are so loveable (I love them) and most of all the plot is plotting with MC's current body's past and the way things are building up are so good that I want to marry the author so bad.

I couldn't get past chapter four.

Spoiler

The aunt immediately knows that 'someone' has transmigrated into her nephew. Because that's the most likely explanation for sudden changes of behavior of high school students, amirite? Even more baffling is that this is the sort of major plot development that should be built up to, and should be some kind of climax-confrontation. Instead, the author treats this like a w/e moment--no biggie. Then suddenly the aunt is all concerned that he live the life her nephew couldn't live happily? But what's the point, since her nephew is 'gone'? It's all so casual and lacking gravitas that I just stopped caring about the protagonist and his new life. It just feels so cheap.

[collapse]

TLDR: Chapter 4 is a mess of characterization and structure. I jumped overboard back into the sea of webnovels where is my home.

Since I didn't read much I won't leave a rating. <<less

(Written at Chapter 92) This is my first time writing a review but I felt like I should because I really love this novel so far, and when I first started reading it there were 0 reviews and a 3.8 rating (glad there are more reviews and a higher rating now!). I've always been a big fan of idol novels (I read basically all of them but my favourite are DoD and tr*shy PD), especially ones with unreliable narrators - and this MC is an extremely unreliable narrator. You... more>> can see the way he places a wall between people in his circle, but is also extremely mentally affected when he figures out that someone isn't acting as he thought he would, contrary to his pre-conceived notions.

As it states in the description, he was a top idol, and is a genius (though he has his caveats) but not to the point of being overpowered because as he says in the very beginning of the novel, MC has devoted his life to his artistry so there's no other path for him (basically). Things do go his way, but that's because he goes over and above to manipulate things so that can happen. I also think the people around him, both Prism members and contestants are interesting, they're not sidelined or used as side-accessories for the MC. They have their own arcs and personalities, and sometimes when I read an idol novel and return to it after taking a break for a while I have a hard time remembering what the other characters were like, but these characters are fairly distinct (especially Zen... a strange and unique one for sure).

The main reason I wanted to write this review was because of the translator. I've read many novels, but I've never seen a translator who loves translating as much as this one - they upload a new chapter about every ~4 hours, with roughly 5 chapters every day. I think that's really impressive, and the high speed isn't because the chapters are split into multiple parts, but because they seriously translate that much (it's a little funny, because they're also self-aware and in a little disbelief at how often they update). From what I can gather, their Korean proficiency is high, their footnotes are extremely helpful, and they have a lot of love for this novel. It's kind of awe-inspiring that there are almost 100 chapters out in less than one month. Kudos to you, cabin four translations!

All in all, please give this novel a shot! The prose is interesting, and it's not a novel that you'll have to worry about waiting to binge, because chapters come out every couple hours. I think it would be a good read for even people who don't typically read idol novels <3

// Okay update to reply to that review by starkaster lol. I know it definitely sounds like a copout but you need to actually keep reading because everything is explained in due time. There's a reason for all this mystery surrounding Han Seungbeom's life. As the translator says over and over again throughout the footnotes, there are basically no plot holes because EVERYTHING is explained in the novel eventually, even things you might have overlooked. It's also bad to look for spoilers because everything should be read in the proper progression that the author intentionally wrote and planned. So no, it's not that these characters are acting illogically or unrealistically, it's that they have experienced things that influenced their actions but you haven't learned those specific occurences yet. <<less

I read 73 chapters in a sitting! I just couldn't stop, I kept reading into the early hours of the day. I finished around 3am, it was that good.

I adore the characters in this book. I adore translator-nim too. The people feel real, I love their interactions. I love everything.

I need to calm down then I'll write a proper review because I'm still high from reading. I normally don't write reviews immediately after reading because I end up sounding incoherent, but I couldn't help myself this time.

Anyways, what I'm trying... more>> to say is READ THIS BOOK.

Edited: Dec 15, 2024. It is not too much to say everybody needs a Han Seungbeom in their lives, I know I do. MC is amazing. His relationship with his former group (PRISM) members and his current is solid. He isn't a goody two-shoes but he is kind.
Spoiler

I can't even lie, Baek Kiryang pissed me off and I'd never be as patient with him as MC was but that is just what makes Han Seungbeom who he is. But despite his kindness, he still had other options for that particular stage just incase Baek Kiryang and Lee Danbi can't step up. Meaning MC is kind but not s*upid. He isn't so kind as to endanger other participants rankings for two people no matter how much he wants to help them.

[collapse]

I haven't seen much of PRISM members but Lee Chise and Jay have my heart.

Reading about MC's past life, struggles, brilliance and how even with all that, he was still a guide to those he loved. I wished Han Seungbeom can realise just how much he impacted PRISM positively. He's an unreliable narrator so don't be too quick to believe him. The mystery part about OG-Seungbeom is intriguing and I thought Author was never going back to it but they did! If you normally read transmigration books, you know how it usually goes.

Another positive is that translator-nim is a robot. I'm accepting no other reason for how fast they are.😑

Long story short, give this book a try. <<less

In my opinion, this is a must read for the idol genre. Honestly when I started reading this, I didn’t have much expectations as it felt similar to other idol novels (mainly how they rip-off produce in every novel lol). But this story is like a roller coaster. It starts pretty normal but then you’re hit with heaps of twists and turns before going back to smooth sailing and then a sudden nose dive. I’m not sure at what point it was, but I became so hooked on this novel... more>> that I binged it in a few days.

imo, if you like tr*shy pd like me (it’s my fav idol story of all time) then you’ll def love this one as they’re kinda similar. I love it when their past life plays a role in the story and isn’t just forgotten in favour of their new exciting life. I especially love when the group members are given an actual personality and backstory as it makes the bonds they form with one another feel so much more real and meaningful. I actually love all the characters and not just our mc!

Another plus point is that the translation for this is top tier. Normally I don’t read translation notes much cause I just find them boring and unneeded at times. But! This is actually the first novel where I read every translation note and they’re honestly so interesting and well written, and they add so much to the story! Like, I’ve been a kpop fan for ages (since 2nd gen but I also listen to a few 1st gen groups lol) but even I’m learning new things from the translator haha. It’s crazy, I usually always add something I don’t like about a story to my reviews but I have nothing bad to say about this story orz. <<less

I can't explain how much I got addicted to this story. I was initially going to stop reading on a couple of chapters at the start because of some small things that threw me off. But as I keep on reading, I started to love his interactions with the characters.

Spoiler

His new group members are all funny and interesting, and they seem to see that he's more than the persona that he shows to the public. He's pretty sweet with them, regardless of what he thinks.

Meanwhile, his relationship with his old group is pretty tense and awkward since he left them on a critical moment, causing a lot of misunderstandings on both sides though he still tries to help them. I want to see more of his interactions with the rest of Prism in the future! Chise is my favorite because of how chill he is!

Meanwhile, my favorites in his new group are Nicholas and Baek Kiryang, the two complete opposites of each other. Nicholas is too confident with his skills and Baek Kiryang is too insecure.

[collapse]

I just love how the MC tries to do his best to help others while making it seem like he's okay and that he can shoulder anything, but in truth he's actually just a huge emotional mess who probably needs a hug.

The tag, "unreliable narrator" definitely applies here because there are times when the MC can be dense or judgemental because of how he was before he died, making him believe that some people hate him. And since it's in the first POV, his thoughts are more believable. If you think he's smart, he's not.

Spoiler

I genuinely believed that he was right about some of the characters until something happened and it's like a switch was flipped.

He doesn't trust people easily, especially after he met a very dangerous person in his first life. And even before that, he was already distrustful so it makes a lot of sense why he thought of them like that before the misunderstanding was solved.

Edit: He's just distrustful in general, I think. He's just as crazy as his old friend and I didn't expect it. It makes me think his craziness attracts a brand of crazy lol

[collapse]

There are still some characters and parts of the story that I feel iffy about but they don't detract my enjoyment of reading the novel. In fact, it only makes the good parts pop out more. What I like most about this novel is that there's no system unlike most entertainment novels. While I don't mind systems, I prefer the MC acting on his own instead of being pressured by one. <<less

I don't like stories where MC chose su*cide and then either regressed or ended up possessing a new body...

However, this story is an exception. Most chars that chose su*cide were stereotyped as weak, bullied characters that could not change their fate... but this MC was different. I don't know about other stories but so far, I like the MC a lot.

He was actually very strong-willed, and patient character. Unfortunately, circumstances made him resort to su*cide not because he felt hopeless but because he believed it was the only way... more>> he could fully exact his revenge. Obviously, this su*cide ended up not going the way he wanted. Fortunately, he had another chance to do it after possessing a new body.

I liked how people from MC's past kept appearing around him (in his new body), and how he (along with the readers) got a glimpse of what happened in the past...

Overall, it was a good read. MC's internal monologues are also very entertaining (I find him very funny at times). He kept calling those 'young people' around him as brats, chicks, children, child, etc. when at times he acted more of a brat than them. 🤣

I wanted to read more about his past and how the people he left behind viewed him. Lastly, I hoped he and the people in his past could clear their misunderstanding.

I am so rooting for this MC to fulfill his goals. (Though I personally am not a fan of revenge stories) <<less

Most solid group recruitment of every idol survival show novel I've read. Each member gets their own arc (s) and not only do they have depth but they also wrap up very satisfyingly. For once I find myself at ease and understanding of why every member of the final group got to debut and how they function together as a team. The author and TL-nim does a great job of making them endearing, emotional and lovable.

another thing I have to commend is how the MC's previous life and possession plays... more>> a larger role than other idol novels, sometimes it really turns into horror for a moment and the confrontation scenes with his past has you on the edge of your seat!

the one singular criticism I have is that even though the author does a great job of building up stuff and leaving various hints for the viewers of the broadcast, we almost never see how the benefits are reaped. It's a bit less satisfying if we don't see fans freaking out at the little quirks and relationships of our MC on the show right? We can only imagine it in our heads. The MC only does monitoring for important news or scandals, so we only get glimpses of how the fans think of him. <<less
