YES. I have been reading this novel in Korean for AGES and trust me when I tell you that this novel is top-tier.
The MC starts out with a horrible personality so the start might be a turn-off for the most of you reading this. BUT like Overgeared, he gets a better personality only he improves at a much rapid pace than Grid (Also a great novel by the way, try reading it).
This MC does have a cheat skill combination but it's not like other novels where the MC's just use it to dominate everyone, he uses it to create a scenario where it results in something everyone is happy and well. I can see alot of people saying that the novel might be boring because we basically know that the MC is going to survive. This isn't the main focus of the novel. Instead, the MC as I mentioned above, trys his very best to create a scenario where everyone can be happy. And THAT is what makes this novel so good. I recommend you read it and just endure the first few chapters.
really wanted to give it a 2, but I enjoyed the few chapters I read. Its pretty much shlock. revently updated review - author is f*cking insane, the universe is bending over backwards to make everything possible, even if it makes no sense, so the main character can act like he is winning via his su*cide super powers. There is no longer a coherent basis for time or consequences.
Nothing particularly innovative and pretty iffy world-building, but the character development is where it shines. As this is an early review, I'm assuming the world-building improves. 4 out of 5 stars. PREMISE
An obsessive, despairing Korean man Kim Gong-ja is awarded a copy-skill with unreasonable limitations. Through a series of odd circumstances, he is able to regress into the past and seek to right wrongs, while attempting to break out of the dungeon and find new purpose in his life. COMMENTS (1) Nothing particularly new
- "GroundHog Day" (1993 rom-com about a man who relives the same day over and over again)
- "All You Need is Kill" (2004 classic JP sci-fi novel about repeating your life over and over again, but with an edgy military setting)
- "Edge of Tomorrow" (2014, Tom Cruise movie adaptation of "All You Need is Kill", with slight comedic undertones)
- "The Tutorial is Too Hard" (2016, dungeon monsters/NPCs with intelligence, personalities and backstories) This novel (2018) clearly took on inspirations from all of these, which isn't a bad thing as long as it's well put together. (2) MC development seems reasonable
MC Kim Gong-ja is an intense despairing man and it's hard to connect with the MC in the initial chapters. He is extremely jelly of successful hunters to the point of being pathological. The author tends to write in achronological order so it takes awhile to figure things out. Once you do, the MC's personality seems relatively cohesive and you can look past his insane behavior (which seems to be a major gripe from the more negative reviews). Much better Reverend Insanity. Post chapter 20, we learn that
quite a number of Tower migrants are likely Earth refugees/thrillseekers/abandoned populace
Author doesn't bother describing how the Tower functions or people came to be.
Although there are hints that there might be more detail in later chapters, it doesn't appear as if the author has any real intention to flesh it out entirely. How the Tower governance, economy, social aspects actually work is a complete black box, and readers are supposed to fill in the blanks with their imagination.
-A functional economy, including cafes, smartphones, liberal news media, etc just exists. Readers are supposed to accept it all just worked out. There's a megacity in the 1st Floor, just because. You'd think a more reasonable scenario is a decent into anarchy/monarchy/feudalism given that there's no way for anyone to leave the Tower (entirely separated from Earth).
-The economy is singlehandedly supported with external dimension (Earth) assistance, with 1 single trader.
-Every human/non-human dimension has their own Tower, but the dimensions don't mix. Yet somehow MC's ghost companion (who doesn't appear to be human or from the same human dimension) is somehow able to mix with MC's human towers. This inconsistency seems odd, unsure if it'll be retconned or explained.
-Tower hunters levels up somehow after killing enough opponents, we're not sure how that works. There are level grades F-A, no idea how that works. The character sheet is laughably simplistic, no stats, nada.
Sword Emperor—let' say a guy extremely close to MC, master of sorts—offhandedly remarks about MC's lack of experience in romance. Then, MC enters a "world" of a romance genre book. He meets a girl. Falls for her almost instantly. Asks her to teach him about love simply because he remembers the Sword Emperor's remark. The girl is a heiress of a Ducal family, engaged to the crown prince, a villainess of that world. She apparently loves the prince so much that she sacrifices her heart to relieve last ten days of her life/world so that she could straighten the crown prince or whatever. Her love is unshakable, well at least it's supposed to be like that technically. But, MC comes to her, asks her to teach him about romance because she's a villainess of a romance genre world, so she will definitely know better about love and will therefore be an ideal teacher. She teaches him "Loves comes as a b*tch. If your lover is a b*tch, you've to become a bigger b*tch, " and blah blah. And MC falls so hard for her and he confesses "I love you as much as I love myself" to her in the first or maybe the second day they properly talk to each other. She also falls hard for him, although it should be technically impossible because she has already sacrificed her heart to love the Crown Prince forever. And then due to the arrogance of the translator, the way they address each other is also weird, where MC calls the girl husband and the girl calls him wife, where in reality the address should be something like "family head/my lord" for the girl and "husband/first man/ducal consort" for the MC. This f*cking address r*pes your brain like crazy, making you want to drop the novel all together.
The thing is, our MC is supposed to be a righteous man, you see. So why would a righteous man fall for someone else's fiancee? Although the crown prince was cheating on her, that's no excuse to fall for her, because he actively forces himself to fall for her. He asks her to spend more time with him and kiss him again and again, because he knows his love for her will deepen that way. Also, MC and the girl both were initially enraged that the crown prince cheated on her. What do you think they do in response? They also start an affair and cheat on the crown prince. Wow. So, if she could cheat on the crown prince, she could potentially cheat on the MC as well. Also, since MC could fall for someone else's woman—forces himself to fall in love, to be exact—he could also fall for someone else's woman the next time as well! That's how cheating stuff normally works. It's so f*cked up. But the author tries to make it into a romantic, poetic and tragic love story. And honestly, I didn't like her one bit. I'm all okay and even extremely happy about a girlfriend who wears the pants in the relationship, but the MC here just acts like a pet in front of her. And she talks about killing him if he breaks her heart. Oh then why didn't she kill the crown prince in the first place? She was also crazy in love with him after all. I mean it's f*cking bullsh*t by this point.
First of all, MC is already shown to be a crazy guy from the beginning. He gets his first skill because of his extreme envy towards an arrogant "Hero." But the thing is, MC doesn't get jealous over anything after that. So what's the point of him receiving his skill because of "extreme envy"?
He then gets vengeful and decides to exact revenge upon that Hero because that guy kills him. Well a lot of things happen and he kills himself more than 4000 times just to go to the past and kill that Hero.
Also, there are many strong characters in the Tower (and I love them), but even those who have been hunters for decades couldn't match him who hasn't even been a hunter for a month. Besides, he always fights solo in the last fight and asks the other famous hunters to believe in him. And they do. They let him challenge the final boss by himself, and of course he comes back with the perfect victory every time. If others would have taken 365 days to conquer a floor (a whole guild and sometimes multiple guilds together), he'd take 3.65 days to do that, alone. Other characters are there just to show how great he is. He's there to sacrifice himself to save them or "carry" them. They aren't great enough to fight side by side with him, despite being seasoned hunters. Although they are smart and capable people, the MC is always the one to call the shots. Always his insights are the best and the correct answer to the problems. Well, even if he makes mistakes, it's not like that will lead to a tragedy as he would just kill himself and go back in time. Also,
he has an invisible spirit attached to him called Sword Emperor. He's a big shot from a Tower in another world, a hunter who had reached Level 99 of his Tower, alone. So, you could imagine how great he is. Although he could only impart his knowledge through words and body stances, he's simply a treasure trove. But, MC only learns basic sword skills and aura usage from him at first and then just stops learning from him. He even disrespects him most of the time, asking the Sword Emperor to call him Lord and stuff if the MC wins a bet. Although I do understand that the spirit calls him names like zombie and stuff, he's a big shot after all, a person to be revered. But MC doesn't actively try to learn from him and instead uses him as a lackey and a cheat code. The spirit's existence just loses more and more meaning as every chapter passes by until he becomes a whiny side character and sometimes a funny guy, rather than a cool, strong and respectable hunter.
