Song Yingshi transmigrated into a cliche drama novel where three male protagonists tried to force their love upon Huai Xu, the female protagonist,

Before Song Yingshi even got to meet Huai Xu, she received the system’s mission: Share a passionate kiss with Huai Xu.

Song “straight woman” Yingshi: ? ? ?

For her mission’s sake, Song Yingshi swooped in and snatched Huai Xu away when the first male protagonist was about to threaten Huai Xu into a lover’s contract.

When Huai Xu chose to participate in an idol competition, Song Yingshi joined her as a trainee.

Song Yingshi completed every mission the system threw at her: sitting together when filming, holding hands, eating together, singing and dancing together…

Ignoring the system’s satisfaction with Song Yingshi’s method of completing her missions, Huai Xu and her shippers eventually existed everywhere.

During a certain party…

“What are you trying to do?” Huai Xu asked in confusion.

Song Yingshi looked at her mission timer in a panic and softly said, “Can… Can you…”

“Hm?” Huai Xu leaned closer.

Song Yingshi tapped her lips with a finger, her eyes looking at Huai Xu and conveying her hesitance and longing.

Huai Xu’s breath got caught in her throat.

Snow-Kissed Rose represents a beauty’s lips.

Straight Little Sunshine (Song Yingshi[top] ) x Strong Yet Fragile Goddess (Huai Xu[top] ) [Both are tops.]

"Her love is like an ocean."

That's how Huai Xu describes Yingshi, and it shows. The romance depicted in this novel is incredibly soft, mutual understanding (and misunderstanding) that ebbs and flows as affections grow and circumstances change. Unlike most other Chinese webnovels face-slapping and unnecessary hostile drama are kept at a minimum; they still exist pertaining to the "male leads", but they eat up little screentime and can mostly be ignored (they also deserve it for the most part).

At its core, Snow-Kissed Rose is about two superstars that nevertheless find... more>> it within themselves to be kind. Unlike other novels they bring up others instead of tearing them down, they're surrounded by individuals who support them and are supported in return. These characters are admittedly fairly one-note, but some possess some depth and are enjoyable to read about. It is refreshing to see characters willing to bond and enjoy their time with each other, instead of the typical snakepit depicted in such entertainment settings. In line with the genre however is the fact that both main characters are Mary Sues in some form however, in terms of their entertainment journey they faced no hardship. Given that the novel focuses instead on the relationship between Huai Xu and Yishi, I'm willing to give it a pass; emotional developments between the two is the heart of the story.

Character depth is good as far as webnovels go. Huai Xu is jealous, yet patient and restrained. She puts up with Yingshi's antics as well as those of the supporting cast, cold but willing to play along. Sometimes she fights back, but never maliciously, never cruelly. Yingshi is a coward; a "spineless fish" as the novel puts it, yet is kind and builds others up. Their relationship, forced haphazardly by an arbitrary System is nevertheless built upon tacit understanding and patient love. Both understand that each have their own secrets. Both will wait until the other is willing to reveal it.

Surprisingly, the author makes an attempt to resolve the System as a plot thread towards the end of the story. It was a welcome surprise, and while not exceptionally well done, deserves praise nonetheless. In general the plot beats are sound; it is a love story set during the debut of both their entertainment careers, it doesn't overstay its welcome. For Huai Xu, its breaking out of her shell and her memories. For Yingshi its coming to terms with her sexuality and her relationship with Huai Xu. Both grow as people, and in doing so let go of their fetters.

Translation is of decent quality. My standards aren't high (it's really just consistent and correct grammar), but the current crop of Baihe translations are full of MTL or just poor English. There wasn't any jarring error or inconsistency that disrupted by engagement with the novel.

All in all, possibly one of my favourite Baihe novels, along with The Witch Nichang and Her Mountain, Her Sea. Do give it a try, it really is quite heart-warming. <<less

The system is pretty brutal in this one. The tasks are amusing most of the time, but the penalties are so bad that Song Yingshi basically has no choice but to complete them. That said, it pretty interesting to see how Song Yingshi twists the requirements to complete the mission. I also really like her dynamic with Huai Xu.

Song "Domineering Boss" Yingshi: Looks at the mission and commands her "employee" to cooperate

Huai Xu: Refuses

Song "Puppy Dog" Yingshi: Looks at the mission timer and starts pleading with her "employee"

The characters feel pretty fleshed out and the author seems pretty good, honestly.

But I just couldnt get into it cause of the system. The damn thing is so heavy handed, MC really feels like a hostage to it's demands.

10/10 (Top tier)

A celebrity novel that combines quite a few strong aspects without any significant failures. The banter, dynamic, and eventual chemistry between the FLs is strong. The idol and celebrity aspects are done quite well, and especially are elevated with a very endearing side cast. The side cast has an unusually large number of characters that stand out, and the friendships and dynamics between them and the FLs really does elevate the idol/celebrity plotlines. The system plot is also strong, popping back up throughout the story to add... more>> more layers to the mystery and with a good conclusion. Mostly, the weaknesses of the novel are just minor potential aspects rather than anything that crosses the line into being a real problem.

Spoiler

Huai Xu regaining the memories of her past life felt like it could've had more influence on how she acts. Of course, the idea is that Song Yingshi and her other newfound friends and teammates changed not only the course of her life but also her social connections and fundamental view of the world. It makes perfect sense that she wouldn't fall into nihilistic pessimism or the like. However, really the only impact we see is in one or two individual scenes tied directly to when she regains the memories. It didn't need to be an arc (after all that'd kind of be a retread of the beginning of the book) but it would've been an enhancement to show just a little bit more of her being pulled out of the darkness of her past life through interactions with her current life's teammates and Song Yingshi.

The male leads were of course pushovers due to the manipulations of the system, which is fine enough since not only is it justified by the plot but also it makes sense thematically that Huai Xu in this life has already 'conquered' the shadows off her past. However it kind of feels like the final confrontation of the system is missing just a little bit extra to fully realize the scene. It's slight/murky enough that I honestly don't really have strong thoughts to express what exactly though.

The climactic arc shows off a lot of strengths of the system plotline but it does also show some weaknesses. Over the course of the novel, it plays around a lot with hidden information from reader. Scenes are fairly commonly out of chronological order or further added onto later. The structure is definitely fun for the celebrity side and leads to some strong reveal moments and foreshadowing/callbacks for the system plotline. However, for the system plotline, it does result in a few threads that it felt like should've been set up earlier and kind of feel mildly abrupt. Compliment sandwich though (actually since I can't think of where else to mention this), the way it shows both perspectives and has Song Yingshi and Huai Xu both gathering information and working towards their happy ending was quite nice.

One more miscellaneous complaint and one more compliment hidden as critique. I do find it disappointing that we never got the promised moment where Song Yingshi and her mom sat down and talked. It would've added a family angle that could've further helped contribute to the novel, and the moment where it was revealed that Song Yingshi's mom knew was great and adding on more certainly wouldn't be unwelcome. Also, it is kind of a lingering plot thread why she wasn't affected. A very mixed emotions praise/whine is that I enjoyed the side cast so much that I kind of wished they got more in the wrap-up arc and extras. It's not like they were done badly in the wrap-up, but I kind of wish during the graduation where all the eliminated trainees came back we got even more callbacks to all the past interactions and such, and during the wrap-up we got more with some of the standout side cast. Again this is kind of just saying "the side cast is really good" though.

All nice but I got bored. Seriously, how desperate they are. Honestly, a long time ago Huai should had to stop Song, I can't believe she accepted that kind of emotional ab*se honestly. And that out of nowhere now everything is happy because she wants to turn around and become a l**bian. Honestly, they don't deserve it and that's it for reading more. Everything is just waiting for the rich lady to feel like it. It's really a shame for Huai for being with someone like her. Bored and easy... more>> es of time. <<less
