On their wedding night, she gnashed her teeth, yelling, “Your Highness, that’s shameless!”

Set off by the flickering light of red candles, he curved the corner of his mouth into a wicked grin, “Actually, I can be more shameless…”

When they met for the first time, he was the young prince who lived in his day of brilliance, while she was the pampered princess of the adjacent state.

When they met again, he became the crippled underdog suffering from frustration, while she became the lackluster hostage stranded in an alien land.

In his mid-life, he was defeated in the fight and had his legs broken; his wife passed away and he didn’t have anything left except his father’s detestation… After constant blows took the edge off his spirit, all he wanted was nothing but serenity.

In her teen-age, her state perished and her home lost; she lapsed into an awkward situation after being abandoned and having her marriage annulled… As endless hardships isolated her from happiness, everything she wished for was no more than peace.

“Lu Zhishan, when I first met you, I didn’t think I’d marry you…too old,” after years passed by, one day, she lay on his laps mumbling, with a kind of hazy beauty on her boozy face, “and lame.”

“Mu Nanzhi, you have the wrong memory. At our first meeting, I’m neither old nor limp.”

“…When was that?”

“When people were celebrating your first birthday,” that man assumed all gentleness and joy crept on his eyes and brows, “On that day, you were ‘drawing lots’ in the rear hall. I also sneaked there to have a look. But, out of my expectation, you directly grabbed my true-love knot.”

How vivid the red love pea is embedded in the exquisitely carved dice,

Just as my feelings for you deep in my bones.

This story is sooo sweet. Lu Zishan really doted on her even before the marriage. But Mu Nanzhi wasn't that kind of weak girl either.... more>>
Spoiler

So surprised that it was her who asked him to marry her! It was on around chapter 146. The wedding is on chapter 200. This is truly a slow romance

[collapse]

It has around 1000 chapters but each chapter is not too long. I read using MTL so probably I understand only 70% of story especially the drama in the palace. So many characters in this story but that's my weakness unable to remember who is who. Translator Flying Lines do a good job to translate this story. I read their translation to understand more about story's detail. I think they skipped a chapter accidently.
Spoiler

when Lu Zishan was framed to miss a party at the palace therefore he was punished to kneel for hours outside by his father

tldr This story is recommended if you want sweet slow romance where both FL and ML are nice but not s*upid.

Probably I will update this review after finishing this story because I haven't reached the part where tag "lovers reunited" is. <<less

The story seems promising so far. A passionate prince who cares for duty and family more than scheming goes off to join the war effort as a normal soldier with his father's blessing. His travels led him to visit his Aunt (father's half-sister) who had been married off for political reasons and meet her and her daughter. The condition of their family made the boy feel utmost respect for the sacrifice women give to maintain the country. From then on, he kept tabs on the family out of concern.

He then... more>> stayed in the war for the next 12 years. He was married in the 8th year. On his return, he met both his ill wife and his cousin who was staying in the capital as a political hostage.

The slow romance tag is well meant. The feelings of the two are not romantic at all at first. He feels care for a younger generation and she feels trust for the older. They develop a low-key friendship between a man who is no longer in political favor and a girl who wishes for a simpler life where she can choose her husband and see her mother and brother again.

The suitability of them as a couple becomes obvious quickly enough, although the two stick to feelings of protectiveness and admiration. Both were assigned marriages by the emperor and seem quite aware that their future marital decisions are not something they can decide by themself even if those initial partners don't stay within the picture.

The only obvious antagonist as of chapter 48 is developing as a future suiter of the younger cousin. She herself is oblivious to this and doesn't see this other cousin (antagonist) in that way at all. <<less

I'm reading this through MTL and it's so sweet, I love it. The OTP is fluffy and heartwarming and so far there hasn't been a lot of political maneuvering towards the throne, but knowing the author from her previous work "The Emperor's Beloved Ugly Girl" that probably won't happen till the last 1/3 of the novel. This is a nice one to read in spurts when I'm in the mood for something romantic and light.
