Good news: The movie that was forced to halt filming finally found a replacement male lead.

Bad news: The replacement is his ex-boyfriend whom he broke up with three years ago.

Good news: Their scenes together can be finished in a little over a month.

Bad news: Most of them are intimate scenes.

Li Siwei, a fifth-rate artist lingering on the fringes of the entertainment industry. His career was bumpy, and his pockets were emptier than his face.

Just as he was disheartened, preparing to leave the big city and give up his acting career, he unexpectedly received a script for a gay-themed movie.

But less than a week after joining the production, the other male lead suddenly withdrew, and filming was forced to stop. Li Siwei’s acting career was once again in dire straits.

A week later, the producer suddenly knocked on his hotel room door.

“Siwei, we found a replacement male lead!”

Li Siwei looked up and saw a popular actor who had recently risen to fame standing at the door, also his ex-boyfriend whom he broke up with three years ago, Yu Chuan.

I love the angst, the relationship progression. The early parts of the novel made bawl my eyes out of distress and sadness.

But I was somewhat dissatisfied with the main focus of the plot in much later chapters (c50+)

The main antagonist and plot surrounding it feels rushed/out of place.

The whole Han Xiao situation thing, he barely appeared in the early parts almost no hint of him, and the author just threw him into the plot out of nowhere. Like I wish the author gave HX more detail to in the early stages of the novel.

Anyways I really appreciated the ending more since some newer danmei have such lacklustre endings. That barely gave any satisfaction. <<less

This is a well translated novel. My one critique is that the novel felt like two different novels in one. The first half was poignant. It genuinely felt like a less dramatic but incredibly emotive story of two people trying to handle their past feelings in a setting where they had to play as lovers. I liked descriptive film settings (like the one in The Star around The Sun). However, the second half (or so) was so abruptly dog blooded I burst out laughing.

It goes from sad- story about exes... more>> to

evil chaebols and mu*der plots and illegitimate children and lol

This made me kind of pissed. I don’t hate dog blood. Some of my favorite novels are dog blood/melodramatic. But those tend to be upfront from the get go. I already know I am reading dramatic shenanigans when I start those just based of the synopsis. However I will give pros to the author for doing a decent job tying the two parts together (it still made narrative sense) but in my opinion the story has two different tones. To the point the redemption of the Yu Chuan made me go meh :/ And what’s even funnier is-

Spoiler

The same dog blood twist happens in the FILM being acted out in the narrative. It starts as a poignant, art-house, coming of age-esque film and ends as a guns blazing, action, wealthy family-feuds, thriller type of film. Two different tones. It’s if a slice of life film was directed by Christopher Nolan in the second half. It made me think the author can’t imagine writing a poignant story without action-packed melodrama.

Still a decent read. For much of my disappointment in the latter half, I still liked reading the main couple’s backstory and how they supported each other at vulnerable times. The antagonist could have been less... campy evil imo. Like he was so absurdly evil it added to my dissatisfaction with the latter half. Not a bad read still. <<less

It's alright. Not super fluffy but has some cute moments. It kind of took a different direction than I anticipated? More angsty/dramatic I guess. The main couple is alright. I was pretty happy when they finally got together though. But I really had to speed through the drama to get to it. The breakup seemed overly dramatic to me and honestly not super well explained.

Like I do feel like Yu Chuan was being a little distant and uncommunicative, which definitely could merit a breakup... But why was the incident with Han Xiao specifically the trigger for the breakup?? Why didn't Li Siwei ask Yu Chuan clearly what happened? Maybe I missed that but I kept rereading it and didn't see any good explanation imo.

[collapse]

Probably wouldn't reread, but it was an interesting read the first time I guess. I was really interested in learning what happened exactly and it was definitely progressively revealed in an interesting way. <<less

At the beginning of the novel it felt like the writing was amazing, the plot was amazing but then at the end it felt like the author was rushing or summarizing it.

I would've also liked some extras after everything to see how they lived after, maybe them coming out and MC's brother.
