Mob Protagonist ~ Mob in the Novel But There Is A Problem

Description

I have been reincarnated as a mob. Isn’t that usually how it starts, right? But this development feels a little strange, doesn’t it? Most people would be sad to be a mob, but then they end up having a significant role and overshadowing the protagonist. Well, that’s only natural. After all, I know the story and work hard from the beginning, so it’s only natural that I excel.

So, the correct way to express it would be like this:
“I’ve been reincarnated as a mob protagonist.”
“I’ve been reincarnated as a mob.”

To put it accurately, “I’ve been reincarnated as a mob in a popular novel. I’m a character who doesn’t appear in the story at all.”

Well, some people might say, “Hey, if that’s the case, you’re not even a mob!” But the thing is, that novel is popular, you know? It’s been adapted into a game.

And I…

It start with typical isekai opening but with well written character. MC gets cheat but with well balanced power that don't destroy story with naive personality that befit age. And story written in different character make it can feel the story progression in different than MC. The story seems to answer all the plotholes questions in the original story the more you get into it.

Its reincarnation story taking place in modern fantasy japan. MC reincarnated as someone who never appear in the novel/game although unbeknown to her, she was supposed to die during kindergarten massacre accident but twist the fate of herself and people around her by awakening omniscient game perspective power.

Theres multiple reincarnated individual (3 so far as I read) but each one of them is clueless or still probing information on another reincarnator. Despite of that, our MC is the only unique reincarnator who awakened with game perspective power, while the rest... more>> only had knowledge of the novel and original body's power. Moreover instead of standard body takeover, MC soul merged/coexisted with original Miu Takano soul like 2 side of the same coin, leading to her being able to remain innocent and childish despite conscious about her previous life knowledge, overall original Miu having control of her action while previous life soul acting as supplement and only really take over during battle or event. I appreciate these kind of details because sometimes I got creeped out reading about reincarnator who act unlike their mental age without any reason, or how adult doesnt feels weird around it.

I like the way how Miu acting as mob is not because she want to keep the story remain the same or other nonsense from mob reincarnation MC, but to protect her people and doesnt shy away to reveal enough power if necessary, even considering killing final boss herself, which she did on 1st chapter.

I also enjoy how she unravel the mystery behind her power which contradict the law of the world and hidden side of people and the world that didnt exist in the novel. <<less

It's actually surprisingly well written. Characters tend to develop fairly well, and it doesn't shy away from having more mature viewpoints of what is going on. It has a tendency to actually make everything fit more logically in the world, like there having very few healers, which is why hospitals still exist, something not explained in the original novel.

MC seems to act... strange in the first ten or so chapters, doing things no child would do like throwing themselves into danger. There are times where her personality seems inconsistent depending... more>> on the situation.

Later it's revealed that MC and the girl she reincarnated into are two different entities, but both drawing from the same source of knowledge, with the girl being the more human side who views things through a human lens and acting less mature while her other personality holding more divine powers and looking at everything like a player or god and being relatively more mature. So it's more like a split personality, but it also uses that to explain why she did something so illogical, as she was shown questioning why she would do something s*upid. This is sort of inconsequential to the story, but explains why she acts so drastically different depending on the situation. <<less

I recommend reading this review before starting the series, it might help you avoid a little bit of confusion.

Are you looking for a series where everything is 100% rational and realistic, that really engages your mind? If so this is not for you. But if you are interested in a series you can roll with and have fun, then this series is fantastic. That said there are elements involved (particularly with all the scheming behind the scenes, and politics) that some people might enjoy (it's not a brain dead series... more>> either).

The main character is Takano Miu. Miu used to be a Japanese man who was killed by escalator-kun, and reincarnated as a mob girl character in a fantasy version of Japan, based on a novel/game/anime series.

At first, she just thinks this is a normal reincarnation into an ordinary world. Yet by a certain age, she comes to recognize the world she lives in.

Miu greatly values her new loving, ordinary parents, particularly due to the contrast with her crappy parents from her former life. This alongside her new lease on life she decides to act/be the perfect ordinary daughter for her loving parents, and acts as normal (yet silly) affectionate girl her age.

That act eventually becomes established as a new persona, what is later recognized as "Miu-chan/Mii-chan mode". You can think of it kinda like a Bruce Wayne and Batman, with maybe a bit of Bruce Banner/Hulk split personality going on. Where she is silly harmless Miichan to most people, but her original personality during plotting and serious fights. I cant really describe it well, because I don't really remember/understand it completely.

Miu definitely becomes overpowered using her abilities and knowledge, however her powers also can be uniquely limited at times. For example
Spoiler

the root of her ability is basically being a game character. Where she can equip jobs and use abilities just like the game version of her world

[collapse]
. However it is limited in scope as she doesn't have access to most of her abilities outside of fights. Unlike the awakened magic users who gain superhuman strength stamina etc through magic, she is basically a ordinary girl outside of fights.

This series really gets into its own once Miu starts encountering and interfering with events depicted in the series, and other main characters. At least one of whom was also a reincarnated individual from the same world (thus also has novel/game knowledge of events/people), as well as others with similar knowledge (possibly regressors?). It becomes amusing as the other characters get confused when events go different from how they expected (typically due to Miu's actions behind the scenes).

Meanwhile Miu remains a silly Mob character on the surface, while taking action discretly. Often using, finding, or creating scapegoats for her actions, sometimes unintentionally (such as when a reincarnated character comes to the conclusion one of Mius friends is actually the reincarnated one of the group (she is a main character in the series)

It is especially a delight when some characters start to catch on to Mius real nature. Not necessarily discovering it, but thinking of it as a possibility. Like when a simple request to the king for a wasteland part of the country to grow flowers as a reward, turns out to be extremely beneficial. Where one can't tell clearly if the years and personality are actually a act by a incredibly calculating young girl, or just a lucky gain for a silly naive girl with cotton candy for a brain.

Some brief examples of this:

  • A serious duel between reincarnated side character and protagonist takes place. So Miu gets a popcorn machine and makes some for her friends to enjoy the fight. Then she clumsily falls as usual. "Accidently" activating a skill that caused a kernel to hit protagonist and give reincarnated person a brief opening.
  • The "saint" (best healing magician) is healing people. MC uses it as cover for her more op healing ability to heal everyone and boost saints reputation.
  • She's eating at a royal party. She finds the chocolate fondue fountain. She tries dipping some food. She dips some more exotic things. She dips herself in the fountain.
I'm really not doing a good job selling this series. But seriously, it can be a hidden gem. I read an ungodly amount of novels and manga and webtoons, manwha, etc. Plenty of mob character stories as well. This story stands out. It's not a masterpiece, but it has a lot to offer, and most of all it is enjoyable.

Which brings us to the main con. Inconsistent translation.

I give it a 2-3/5. Most of the series is perfectly readable. But this translation could use a editor. There will definitely be parts where it's not easy to make out what is going on.

There are going to be plenty of times pronouns and genders get mixed up, even in the same chapter (see comments on first few chapters for an example of people getting confused by this about whether Miu is a girl or boy). (And some of it I am sure is the original text as well)

Realistically, you just have to learn to read a tad bit like a Japanese reader, and infer stuff like pronouns based on context (where Japanese would be gender neutral and have to infer).

Anyways, I highly recommend giving it a shot. I don't write reviews much, but I feel this is worth it. <<less

If you're going to read this no matter what, be sure to skip 1.1 and 1.2, both chapters are useless Prologue that only get your expectations high to never deliver, with a fight from the future where MC is OP.

The translation alone makes reading this not worth it. It is a complete shitshow. Other reviewers are saying how well-written it is, but I dont see it, especially with GalaxyTL's translation which is the one I've read.

Apart from that the story itself is very bad, but I will admit that if... more>> it had a decent translation it could be worth the read, only if you dont have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING better to read/watch/play. I've read 23 chapters, the.1 and.2 are almost full chapters in length and not one full chapter cut in half, and that creates the biggest problem to me when we have more chapters without the MC than we have with her, at some point we have more than 6 full chapters on some 3rd rate villain's POV when he seems to be a character made to be discarded some time later. Basically, the side characters experienced more character development than the MC, that could've been okay if the MC didnt look at all like a naive and dumb kid instead of the 50yo he should've been and didnt desperately need some reality checks. Other reviewers say how the MC acts sometimes like a kid and other times like an adult, but that hasnt happened much, her father gets mistreated in front of her and she doesnt react at all, like she has no idea of what is going on, and we dont have her perspective to know if she was playing dumb, but 10 chapters later it doesnt seem so, the 3rd rate villain harasses her and her friend but somehow she doesnt unsderstands it at all and misunderstands it as the guy being in love with her friend.

The MC reincarnates in a Novel World that later on was made into a game, that has elements of both mixed together. The thing is, he doesnt know much of the canon story and had only ever played the sh*t out of the game, but even knowing how chaotic and having some idea of what awaits him in the future, he throws everything out of his head and behaves like a kid. Its hard to say more about the MC because until the point I decided this was not worth it, we have like ~10 chapters where the MC appears and most of them dont give much insight and some are Slice of Life.

And I want to reiterate: If it had a decent TL I would've managed to somehow keep reading, the TL is a spaghetti of words and worse than MTL.

The story is bad because of how bland it looks at the beginning, but maybe it would redeem itself later on. I doubt it, but I feel reluctant in saying it is 100% bad because the translation makes it all the more excruciating. <<less

4/5. The idea is very interesting. The translation is about 80% understandable, but it gets really hard to follow action scenes.

Pros : The premise is very interesting. The main character gets reincarnated into a popular series which has a novel, anime, and game. The main character uses the game system while another reincarnated follows the novel.

Cons : Nobody questions why the main character is so ridiculously strong. An average healing mage gets deathly tired after healing 2 people. The main character heals 300 people and regrows 30 people's limbs and... more>> nobody bats an eye.

-The author has too many ideas, but they're not that well executed. The story touches on politics, nobility, running a business, cults, etc. But every issues gets quickly resolved because the main character is OP as hell. <<less

This is a story about a man reincarnated into the body of a girl called Takano Miu and her journey through aristocratic and adventurer life... Or is it? The truth is that this is a somewhat absurdist comedic story about Miu-chan, Takano Miu and an evil spirit as they play through life while taking care of her loved ones.

Miu is the main character and because she's so complex it can be difficult to make out the plot from her POVs luckily we get other people's perspectives and they're usually straight... more>> as arrows, the fact that the main character leans on absurdist humor doesn't mean the story isn't serious however, there's a very compelling story under all the jokes.

As for the humor just so you know what to expect Miu-chan becomes the natural nemesis of a super jumbo parfait, and parfaits in general, and this believe it or not becomes an important plot point, there's also a funny incident where Miu dips her head in a chocolate fondue at a super important party and it turned out to be a brilliant Machiavellian move. This is the kind of thing you can expect.

As an aside you might indeed want to avoid the first chapter 1.1 and 1.2 and read it as an epilogue, I believe the author wrote it to successfully give a taste of what the story will eventually become but it comes with some spoilers and it can actually be misleading until you enter like the 300+ chapters so if I could re-read this fresh I would personally follow my own advice.

I didn't particularly cared for the ending and I believe some things are lost in translation however the journey is well worth it at about 800k words this story is about 10 LN volumes and I definitely recommend it if you enjoy video game type of plot, subtle political maneuvering, cute girls doing cute things, unreliable narrator (exclusively Miu) and fighting scenes... It is more than the sum of its parts but that's like 90% of the novel. <<less

Great story, the progress is walking smoothly. The main character personality is growing slowly but surely. She's a reincarnator and old man before but he's bound by the body he's staying right now. So she can act childish sometimes and can act like her former self sometimes. That is calculating everything in after effect. Her body seems like "different" from normal, even her "special companions" said so so its interesting when the mystery is unfolded one by one. And the multiple POV is good, especially when her mother notices something... more>> different about Miu and get kinda chill from her *grin well anyway, read it. If you need something fresh that it is good. There's a little action too, so you won't get bored by the same thing. <<less

As much as I've liked to continue reading this, I'm dropping this due to the fact that there's too many ads in the TL website.

Having to click away pop-up ads is always a hassle every, single, chapter. There's also side ads that cover the screen (As a phone user) and more ads every few lines. I'd love to give this story a 4 due to how interesting it is (Despite the TL being a little confusing at times), but thanks to how ad-heavy the site is...

The story depicts someone who... more>> has reincarnated into an Anime/Novel/Game story. The protag has only played the game version of the story, and wants to stay hidden as a mob character. The antics are pretty interesting, and there's definitely world building being brought into the story.

Although I've not seen to the point where she has reached the point of OP-ness shown in the prologue, it is a rather slow-paced story (There's time-skips, but its negligible after the very first time skip). <<less

Actually pretty good story wise.

MC (Male->Female??) Is very self aware of the situation she's in, kinda a breath of fresh air even though the story seems to be a standard gate novel with an academy too.

The translation is a bit rough so pronouns and genders can fluctuate but yeah the MC whichever gender they used to be is now a female.

... more>> From the early chapters there might be regression? Not sure.

Anyway pretty solid, MC just trying their best as a mob just creating butterfly effects in a modern japan + gate + academy setting. <<less

What I love about this MC is, desplite her cute happy go lucky personality, she isn't soft heart or haft heart, and she's ruthless most of time to the enemy. Unlike so many MC from other series who repel some enemies and let them escape and think "well, that good enough, let's forgot about it and do other thing, there's no way they will come to bite us back later", Miu will use her own information network to find those enemies who escape and secretly hunt them down with her... more>> other persona to nip the bud of danger that could be treat to her precious family and friends in future. Well, sometime (?) she overdid it and got other people headache to deal with after match of mystery phenomenon.

And auther did well to decieve us reader.

Spoiler

While the auther make us think there're 3 reincarnated at first, it turn out there's only 1 reincarnated.

The princess who's main heroine of novel was time leaper, this world was in time loop more than 1, 000 time, she live and act by script made by someone and before she realise, everything was too late, so she make a wish to redo it again, but she didn't inherite the memory from before time loop, so she did dame thing again, except the last time loop with the existant of Miu.

Miu was an avatar of nameless god who take in the soul of the old man that the auther make us believe he's the past life of Miu. That why she had the godly power to bent the rule of that world and make it like the game system, and she can interfied with "fate" of people in that world and let them free. While auther make us think that she's slowly assent to god hood, it turn out that she's the god itself who descent in to the world.

[collapse]

It's quite sad that this novel get a lot of negative vote and review that doesn't deserve because of low quality translate, especially in early episode. Some reader even give up on this novel because of that. <<less

Grammar is kinda meh, wrong person mentioned from time to time, wrong use of himher etc.

Writing is fairly brainnumbing too, it feels like MTL.

But the story isn't that bad, it would be better if the writing matched it.

If you dont mind the issues, then i'd give this a read. Personally I had to stop at 102 due to the poor writing.

Surprisingly good.
Having read the first chapter, or was it the prologue (?), I felt that this was not worth reading. Thankfully, I continued and this quickly showed itself from a far better perspective than it began with.

The characters that are shown are given more time to be fleshed out which the author uses well. Of you first saw a character that you felt would be a boring two-dimensional cliche, if this character sticks around, you can almost always know that there will be more to them later.

This is a Mary Sue novel, but the main character is actually disarmingly charming, so that she is a Mary Sue doesn't weigh on the story.

If I had to point out any flaws - it'd be the translator. The translation quality is barely better than mtl, the site is awful and full of ads and, honestly, just stick with mtl if you want to read it.
