As I was reading this novel, I couldn’t help bu think of a certain ship of Theseus and how it relates to ideas of identity and the personal self. For those of you that are unfamiliar with the concept, the ship of Theseus-also known as Theseus’ paradox-is a thought experiment first introduced around the late 1st century regarding the preservation of a famous hero’s ship,

“The ship wherein Theseus and the youth of Athens returned from Crete had thirty oars, and was preserved by the Athenians down even to the... more>> time of Demetrius Phalereus, for they took away the old planks as they decayed, putting in new and stronger timber in their places... ”

A philosopher then proposes the following question: If you were to continue replacing each piece of the wooden ship one by one, at what point is it still considered the original ship? Similarly, if you were to coincidentally gather up all the discarded pieces and build an entirely new ship, would that ship be the (new) original ship of Theseus?

These questions and more are answered in the story as we come to realize

WHO GIVES AF WHEN THE M*THERF*CKING SHIP IS NEVER GOING TO F*CKING SAIL ANWAYS! ! AUTHOR WHAT POSSESSED U TO PAIR JIYUN WITH THAT s*upid OLD COW WHEN MY BEAUTIFUL BBYGIRL ACE IS LITERALLY ROGHT !! THERE !! WRYYYYYY😭😭

Putting that bs aside, the main couple’s romance honestly felt kind of rushed and very blurry in the details. It took less than 2 chapters for ML to become obsessed w/ MC because apparently he smells really good??Author if you wanted this to be ABO just say so... don’t even get me started on that awkward timeskip that skipped the entire development of their relationship... the chemistry just wasn’t there even with the whole backstory about Yuzhe/Yu/Lin Xiao/whatever tf his name is it felt like they kept getting put together to move the plot along faster... on that note they should’ve renamed Zhou Rui/Kai to just Ken because that’s all he was giving for most of the novel🤷‍♀️ Such a difference in character development lmao...

Honestly I think this story would have worked out so much better if the author just focused on the politics/sci fi part and left the romance part out altogether... two close brothers who only want the best for each other, slowly end up growing more emotionally and ideologically apart as they face the realities of the world and its deep corruption, ending with each of them standing on opposing sides despite trying so hard to do the right thing... seeing the blood on the other’s hands and knowing nothing will ever be the same again... my heart breaks especially for Jiyun imagine having to lose your brother twice and thinking it’s all your fault... absolutely sick what they did to him he was just a kid who wanted his family back😭😭

Going back to my initial question, no I don’t think the original Shuzhe is the same Shuzhe who gets a (sort of) happy ending in the very last chapter... actually I don’t think anyone really got off better than they did at the beginning..... you’d think society would learn their lesson after the first couple of times that implanting people’s brains into another body might not be worth the overall risks (sanctity of life and all that), but then the MC and his friends end up fixing their problems by DOING THE EXACT SAME THING ?? UMMM ??

anyway I’m still pissed I didn’t get to hear more about Jiyun he barely even showed up in the last chapter author please I just need to know if he’s okay or at least in therapy🙏
