Qi Kingdom was defeated and the thirty-six cities of Pingchuan were taken away. Unexpectedly, Jing Kingdom’s ambition was so blatant, they actually asked Qi Kingdom to send a prince to Tianyou Palace and marry the general whose leg was broken in this war. This way, Jing Kingdom willing to offer gold and withdraw their troops.

The marriage was uncertain, so Tan Chuyan deliberately angered King Qi and put himself on the road for the marriage. When he arrived in the Tianyu Palace, Tan Chuyan ran away without saying a word and took the little eunuch who was waiting for him.

He slapped everyone away loudly and brightly.

In the Tianyou Palace, Tan Chuyan met a madman. I don’t know who gave this madman a courage, he saw him sitting in a wheelchair in front of everyone and used his sword to lift Tan Chuyan’s chin and said, “I just saw that your skin is delicate, I want to peel it off for collection.”

Tan Chuyuan smiled and nodded, pushed the tip of the sword away with his fingertips, “The general’s appearance is not bad. It’s a pity, I don’t like it.”

I had high expectations for this particular novel due to it's slightly close similarity with the novel 'After Marrying the Disabled God of War As My Concubine'. However, I was destined to be disappointed just halfway through.

It was fine at the start. Back then, I surmised the MC will be an OP character. Not that absolute OP though since he has a fragile health due to complications when he was still in his mother's womb (thanks to the late Queen/Empress Qi of the Qi Kingdom). He was even schemed against... more>> by an unknown party several chapters later.

As I've said earlier, it has a good start. But after three to four chapters, things started to go haywire and boring. Several characters were just introduced in one fell swoop and I started to wonder where is the fcking ML. Turns out he's in disguise and was actually with MC in these few boring haywired and boring chapters.

Just that, the world-building isn't built properly. The scene and time transitions aren't right. Narration style is okay but needs improvement.

The thing that put the last nail to the coffin is the MC and ML's sudden mutual feelings towards each other, albeit they didn't explicitly state it. With the ML's character setting, he should've merely disliked (if not abhorred or hated) the MC. He should just have a political relationship with the other. He sees him as a tool against his arranged marriage to Xibo Clan Princess and also to help his sister in the battle for the throne.

The same thing runs similar with the MC who only wants to fulfill his Master's wish, attain justice for himself, and live peacefully. He's an astute character who has ample of experience in his last life since he transmigrated when the Fifth Prince he transmigrated into was still in his mother's womb. Thus, he is mentally mature, an expert. He used his intelligence as an advantage in this world. Moreover, in those thirty plus chapters, his identity in his previous world isn't properly explained. It was just briefly stated that he's an adult (the exact word is old man) and a forensic scientist. Nothing else.

Also, in a certain chapter the ML realized his jealousy and irritation towards situations like MC being taken care of by a mysterious and powerful character named Young Master Yan (who is actually MC's second identity). Then when the MC was almost assassinated, got severely injured and sick, we see the ML taking care of him himself when many people know it isn't like him to nurse other people's health. Imagine an abrupt change in character? It was confusing. Their interactions before all of these were polite, neither hot nor cold. And then in another chapter, he kissed MC. Just like that. The MC didn't even feel aversion or disgust. He just let the ML carry him, hug him, take care of him... which is great but the way things are portrayed aren't pleasant no matter where you look at it. Come on, there's no courtship nor dating.

As I've said before, there's no proper transition. Things just happen. Consequently, I got more puzzled and frustrated.

Seriously, I did not even feel even the tiniest bit of romantic feeling between the two. Things happened too abruptly. It wasn't mellow. It wasn't gradual. It wasn't slow. It just occurred out of the blue. Even the MC just felt in one chapter that he must protect ML since he is 'weakened' thus vulnerable... to the point he is willing to throw his own life away for the other's sake. The two neighboring kingdoms are eyeing the Jing Kingdom, just waiting for the right time and right reason to attack them. These other two Kingdoms are just plain and boring in my eyes as well. They're just strong and scheming in name but has no substance - two dimensional cannon fodder losers.

More importantly, I don't think the Author even made any proper plans in writing this novel. I think she just writes what she could write, put what she could put. There's no proper outline. She follows a historical action, warfare, political and palace drama theme however, she wasn't able to put it into good use nor produce a satisfactory result. The story is messy and all over the place. I really just can't force myself any longer even though I decided to just grit my teeth and go along with the story. Things aren't improving. The story totally got boring and incomprehensible for me.

To summarize it, this story is dull. Coupled with a horribly low quality translation particularly at chapters two to ten with no proper editing as evident with the grammar mistakes and poor sentence construction that just got slightly better later on but still lacking, it truly horrified me and I had to completely drop this novel. It also lacks footnotes which must explain the unfamiliar terms, Chinese idioms, etc. but the translator does not even bother. This is a historical novel. It should have proper footnotes to guide a non-Chinese reader like me. It is second only to cultivation novels that need proper and lots of footnotes to aid the readers in comprehending the story.

I hope the translator will edit, proofread, and add footnotes to the story to make it better. And just saying, I might consider re-reading this if and only if other decent translators will pick this up.

If you are looking for an action, face-slapping, mystery, palace drama, warfare, adventure, political, historical BL novel, this isn't for you. I don't recommend it.

You might want to read 'After Marrying the Disabled God of War as My Concubine', 'How To Survive As A Villain', 'Governor's Illness', 'Spring Trees and Sunset Clouds', 'Golden Terrace (official translation) ' and 'Ballad of Sword and Wine' instead if you are looking for better historical BL Novels. <<less
