A daily cultivation journal of a rogue cultivator from Wulong Mountain, recording the bits and pieces of his cultivation journey…

They say a woman fears marrying the wrong man, a man fears choosing the wrong path. Starting out as the lowest-tier rogue cultivator from the infamous Wulong Mountain, Liu Xiaolou could only resign himself to fate. In a world ruled by prestigious sects, he struggles bitterly just to scr*pe by, toiling endlessly for a single spirit stone, a single pill, a single magical item, a single spirit herb.

The daily grind of life, the bittersweet trials of cultivation—these are things only the person going through them can truly understand.

Yet through it all, one thing remains unchanged: a heart devoted to the pursuit of immortality.

This is a lighthearted cultivation story told from the perspective of a rogue cultivator, following the ups and downs of his daily life. It has a slice-of-life feel, and the main character is just a small-time character. The overall tone is relaxed and comforting.

The plot feels fresh and fun, the character development is top-notch, and the writing is solid throughout. It does a great job showing the struggles of a rogue cultivator trying to survive and fight for resources. It’s grounded and believable, without getting dark or heavy.

If you're tired... more>> of main characters who are all about conquering the world and defying the heavens, give this one a try. <<less

I really enjoy slow-burn novels like Rogue cultivator and Quest to Immortality (the one with Arrays) where MC are neither apathetic nor have characters dying of old age left and right midway.

Also, I enjoy the fact that some aspects of character make sense:

Spoiler

Example, to go from mid-stage foundation to late-stage foundation, the MC realizes his limits and opts for external tool to hold his Qi, despite knowing that this will make him weaker than cultivators who breakthrough on their own.

In other novels, MC would either somehow miraculously breakthrough (despite being an "inferior" talent) or the external tool would somehow be a heavenly artifact, making him stronger.

I created an account just so I can post this review here.

This novel is set in a cultivation world, obviously, but the overall vibe and the way the characters act and talk feel much more like a wuxia novel that's been dressed up in xianxia clothing.

WARNING: The following covers some general events in the novel, so consider yourself warned.

The story opens with the main character, Liu Xiaolou, taking two back-to-back losses. First, he bribes his way in, trying to pull strings to enter a sect, but because of his rogue-cultivator... more>> background he gets dragged down, loses the money, and still doesn’t get in. Second, a neighbor from Wulong Mountain tricks him during a fake marriage arrangement and swindles away his old ginseng.

In today’s webnovel landscape, where revenge usually comes fast and loud, the MC would have locked onto his target within three chapters and finished the payback arc in one big section, giving readers the emotional payoff and setting up new subplots. But Life as a Rogue Cultivator doesn’t do that. Instead, the protagonist, broke and cautious, just follows the other Wulong Mountain rogues on raids, risking his life to scr*pe together enough to keep cultivating. Then he’s off helping with farm work, visiting neighbors, and heading down the mountain to start his journey.

Liu Xiaolou is a local with no parents, a dead master, and nothing left of his sect (Sanxuan Sect) except for one big white goose that causes trouble. That goose even eats the MC’s only spirit stone in the beginning and is otherwise useless beyond making messes. On paper, he has absolutely nothing. He does have decent looks, though, and Sanxuan’s cultivation technique is yin-yang dual cultivation. Thanks to his appearance, his dual cultivation method, and his knack for networking, he manages to marry into a family as a son in law, though he’s kicked out after three years.

During that period, he doesn’t forget his roots. He keeps visiting his master’s grave, while also navigating the schemes between major sects and the Su family, helping out his fellow Wulong Mountain cultivators, saving people, caring for old friends, treating impotence, smuggling goods, robbing and killing when needed, even bending straight guys and straightening bent ones... All kinds of absurd yet entertaining episodes play out. Liu Xiaolou does good and bad alike, and through him the story captures the full range of a rogue cultivator’s life. To me he feels like a free-spirited young swordsman, almost like Ling Wu Chung from the Smiling, Proud Wanderer.

Up until the point where he gets divorced for being gay (he's not) and loses his son in law status, the book reads like pure comedy gold. Without relying on the usual golden finger or levelup system, it still manages to keep me hooked and smiling.

After returning to Wulong Mountain, Liu Xiaolou leans on his tenuous ties to the Su family and the “impotence treatment circle” he built as a son in law, and slowly begins to make something of himself. He gets formations, income, connections. That same year Wulong Mountain is marked as a boundary mountain, locked off from every direction to maintain balance between the powers. After the war, there’s a period of recovery, and the survivors start to see hope again.

Then comes the Wulong Mountain Massacre. The group of rogue cultivators, once lively and full of banter, suddenly fall into silence. Liu Xiaolou picks up the mantle, sends out a hero’s challenge, and leads an attack on Tianlao Mountain. From there things snowball, and the story shifts onto a path reminiscent of Water Margin, the tale of Liangshan outlaws.

When I saw them laughing and splitting the loot after revenge, I was amused, but the very next second I wondered: what future do they have? Will they hide in the shadows forever? Sooner or later, they’ll have to face the problem of survival. Sure enough, later on some people defect, Wulong Mountain is nearly wiped out, and it’s all very sobering.

The way the orthodox sects control resources is outrageous, almost like the draconian system in The Mirror Legacy. Even when just one person dies, they shut down the whole mountain, search again and again until they find the answer. The MC almost never manages to slip past. Every time he survives it’s through trickery or counter-killing. The big sects crush rogue cultivators with overwhelming force, and the pressure is suffocating. Without his flimsy connection as a former Su family son-in-law, Liu Xiaolou probably would have been slaughtered in one of those sect purges early on.

The prose is polished, the dialogue is snappy, and the story has a playful edge while still being serious. If there’s a downside, it’s twofold. The cultivation system doesn’t feel all that mystical. Second, the romance side is weak. He gets entangled with multiple women, but there’s no real harem flavor.

This is definitely worth reading. You just need to slow down and savor it, rather than expecting the usual webnovel thrills. <<less

The novel starts off pretty decent for about the first 150 chaps up until the MC's divorce arc. There was some actual struggle and a hint of what a rogue cultivator should face, however it gradually turns downhill after that arc and the story gets boring.

My biggest issue is how much the "rogue cultivator" premise completely falls apart. After the divorce, the MC rarely, if ever, struggles to find resources which is a core part of being a rogue. He constantly stumbles into opportunities and gets to know powerful people,... more>> not because he works hard as a rogue but simply because he used to be the son-in-law of a powerful clan, this status hands him everything on a silver platter. For example, when his friends were all wanted, he just got a free pass removed from the wanted list without lifting a finger, all thanks to his ex-son-in-law status. He even got that marriage in the first place because his exwife's family thought he was gay, not for any actual merit of his own.

On top of that, the MC is just way too lucky constantly getting convenient plot armor. He rebuilds his sect, but it's staffed by guest elders from major powers and somehow becomes a marketplace for 6 big sects, it all feels forced by the author. The cast also gets super bloated, with too many characters who don't really add much. And let's not forget how so many girls just fall for him because he's good looking, which is pretty lazy writing.

The MC himself becomes a jack of all trades, he's a formation master genius, sword master, dual yin-yang cultivator, beast cultivator and probably a few other things I'm forgetting. The worldbuilding feels oddly small too where everyone seems to know everyone else, making the world feel less vast and more like a tiny pond. (I understand that at the current chapter he's still at Foundation Building level but still)

Overall what starts with potential quickly devolves into a repetitive and convenient story that completely misses the mark on its own title. <<less

General story tone is very lighthearted

Enjoyable but also doesn't have big stakes, so if you want something more serious with more complexity on the story maybe look elsewhere, if not this might be it for you.

admittedly it might get better or worse as chapters get released

This gotta be one of the weakest and poorest MC I've seen. He starts off as a rogue cultivator who lives on a mountain where the major sects considers them as bandits. Sadly, after 300+ chapters MC doesn't seem to shake off this identity. These are some things that stand out to me:

• This cultivation worlds seems to be lacking in spiritual energy, no one can truly cultivate unless they have spirit stones — there are few places to absorb spiritual energy from the environment and the major sects controls... more>> them, so if you're poor, you will suffer to the very end.

• MC has no cheats — he's untalented, poor, and has no powerful background.

• This MC had a lot of low moments — disdained and manipulated by sect disciples, being forced into war conscriptions, being forced to beg for his life, captured and almost being tortured to death...I'm really not sure what the author was thinking, but it truly does demonstrate what a untalented rogue cultivator should look like.

• MC is not cautious enough. For an ant, this MC sure gets involved in the dumbest sh*t ever. I can understand being loyal, but after learning formations he should've ended his bandit ways and focus on making money with his legitimate skills. Heck formations was the one thing he was talented in. But he didn't focus on his strengths, instead he gets embroiled into various schemes and was dragged into the chaos that descended upon the mountain. Too reckless. Not steady enough. Too trusting.

• He's a bit of a pushover. 300+ chapters and his stature is still meek and indecisive. It's taking too long for him to turn his life around. Even as foundation establishment stage he's being forced into war conscriptions. After so many chapters, I'm beginning to feel uncomfortable seeing him being pushed around like this, and yet he shows no strong desire to desperately change his fate.

• Dao heart is lacking. Doesn't seem to have any grand vision for his cultivation — he's just going with the flow. All his pursuit for strength so far was driven by anxiety and fear of death. He's just being dragged along by others and the plot. I sometimes feel like he only cultivates because he can, and others around him are doing it.

Conclusion:

Honestly I felt like I wasted my time, so I'm finally dropping it. 400+ chapters with no character development. He may have upgraded his social standing a bit, but at the end of the day, the major sects are just using him as a tool that they can boss around as they please. It's a bit too demoralizing for me to read, so this one is just not for me. <<less

As the title says, this is pretty much the day in the life of a rogue cultivator.

Our MC is an eighteen-year-old that pretty much has nothing to his name and has to climb his way up with odd jobs, side hustles, and occasional less-than-legal ventures.

That's pretty much it. The novel is running a story exactly as promised.

It's enjoyable enough, but if you're expecting world altering treasures, random heaven defying cheat powers, or convenient old spirits that serve as personal tutors, you should read something else before you complain that the... more>> MC isn't literally God yet. <<less

The story is well written and the cultivation societies quite detailled and interesting to read.

The main issues are the absence of a clear plot, and the MC.

There is nothing driving the story, MC has no clear goals, he is just a rogue cultivator being pushed over left and right by almost everybody else and almost never strike back. He also almost never schemes against other when he should, and always get through cultivation block ends or dangerous situations thanks to some plot armor.

Honestly it is like "A Record of Mortal's... more>> Journey to Immortality" without the MC having a cheat and thus getting steped on by every one.

Sure the slice of life is nice, but MC is really too weak and spineless for a cultivator although it is a bit more pleasant to read after chapter 250 ish.

Just to warn you that the progress of his cultivation is pitfully slow, 250 chapters to get from the 2nd or 3rd level of qi refining to the 8th, then 1 chapter to get to the 9th and 10th, and another 50 chapters before fundation etablishment... He also always uses the same tricks to win fights, it is very very boring to read, but if you are into formations, maybe it'll be your sunshine in this novel.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of my time, as I enjoyed some chapters, , but I wouldn't advise to read it if you can't bear MC being subpar for 300 chapters. <<less
