A beautiful story full of ups and downs, and the final ending is really satisfactory it makes you think "finally after so long", like a thristy traveler in the desert that after much struggle finally finds an oasis. The despair and melancholy may seem a bit strong but everything is well-balanced, I fell in love with both main characters, their journey sure has been rough, I really appreciate this couple, an endearing couple that makes you feel distressed for them. The true tragedy concerns a side couple, as from beginning... more>> to end it stays a tragedy, tho they both deserved their own ending as they brought it by their own hands and decisions, maybe if they had made different choices, maybe. Tho I do pity one side of this couple more, as he is the one to truly have suffered from the beginning to the bitter end and to have never known any sincere kindness or compassion shown towards him, maybe the only true compassion he was shown was his death, he was truly miserable. <<less

This novel is too angsty but it belongs to my fave reads. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It's a bittersweet tale, though the bitterness outweighs the sweetness by far. Chu Yan, the palace master, is a character tragically blinded by love in their past lives, having fallen victim to poisoning by a spy. Mo Ren, my heart truly ached for him, my poor baby. He's the personal guard of Chu Yan, he endured unimaginable suffering and pain. Reborn with memories of their previous life, Mo Ren is depicted as deeply depressive with dangerously low... more>> self-esteem, living solely for Chu Yan. He is LITERALLY breathing JUST for Chu Yan, and neglecting his own life. Their story is too damn painful, leaving me yearning for more of their tender moments, which, unfortunately, felt too short. Preferably, I wouldn't read the extras (If I only knew). Extras ultimately served as another source of heartbreak. <<less

The story is good given that all chapters are free in jjwxc. However, I find mo ren (ink blade) so stuuuppid, especially in making life decisions. He's making thing too complicated, hence making the consequences grave, only because of his "thinking".

The ML, moren, thinks that he is just a shadow guard and is disposable. At first it is very understandable but after so many scenarios of MC convincing him and saying his real thoughts, mo ren still thinks he's too lowly and unimportant. I can see how this is a good book, but I just can't seem to like an MC that is so frivolous... I know the author is setting the villain up to be a seductress that tempted him into discarding what he truly cared about, but the crux of the matter is that he still discarded it. He discarded the guard, the guard's good advice, and his loyal servant's good advice; and only realized his wrong when it hits him in the face and kills him. I know everyone makes... more>> mistakes, but someone with that much power should realize their power and be more deliberate in how they treat their dependents and responsibilities. And the g*ooming of these shadow guards I know is very typical, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth to consider it romantic to have someone who is rescued from that be portrayed as devoted and in love with their rescuer. <<less

Chef's kiss all over, it was all sorts of flavors of angst. It's not dragged on too long not is it rushed just the best pacing for this sort of stories. Although I was bawling at the last extra like I was at least expecting some comfort but the author was like nahhh and dumped a whole load of new knives. Not the best but it was good and a short read.

I love a lot about this novel. How the characters are written, how Chu Yan constantly has to struggle, how hard showing his love to Mo Ren is. At the beginning I was worried the characters would be trope-y but I was quickly proven wrong. Mo Ren growth was slow and realistic, he didn't just flip once he realised Chu Yan had feelings for him, he struggled with comprehending his feelings. Chu Yan didn't force him into anything, you could really believe his love was real, his frustrations and anger... more>> over their struggles with communication felt very human. I really enjoyed their journey with all it's obstacles.

I think the plot reveals are very well done as well, while there are clues and you can figure out the situation yourself if you pay enough attention, none of them are cheap or come out of nowhere. The story isn't overly complex, there isn't hundreds of characters you have to keep track of, the plotting isn't ridiculous or unrealistic, everything comes together well in the end.

I kind of wish the extras were happier, that we got more of their loving life together. I do like the second extra, how Chu Yans madness was depicted, how you could feel the distress he felt, how it reiterated that even if everyone around him lost their trust in him, Mo Ren still believed in him. It still broke my heart nonetheless.

The amount of comfort after all that amount of angst left me wishing for more. I wish we've seen more of their happy life together, on the other hand I understand it's still going to be a long journey for them, to be finally happy and loving, they have a lot of healing to do and we've only saw a bit of it. <<less

It’s a good story if you want a short and angsty read. My he at t hurts for ML in the past life, I wish we got more of the healing later on instead TUT WAHHHHHHH

i dont wanna be too harsh on it since it was a short story that doesnt have many chapters to go in depth on. But it was nice!

This story was so angsty and the length was just right not too long or short which really showcases their relationship. The cliff hanger for the extra made me so curious if there was a sequel what makes me sad is that this novel is so underrated that theres not even a fandom.

I hated the last two chapters. I hated the ending of the last extra. It ended abruptly. It took the book from a 4 ⭐️ to a 3 ⭐️, it would be a solid 4 if it ended after first extra

The last extra was too, too boring. How many times does the torture of the first life need to be relived? Do we really need more ML angst about it?? And it ends abruptly, it ruined the novel for me
