MTL'ed.

This novel's kind of a mixed bag. Rather than the typical ignored noble girl gets doted on by neighbouring prince it tries to focus more on worldbuilding and the politics of the main nation.

Romance is rather light and it's more subtext than any proper romance. ML half treats MC as his ward with how much he dotes on and shelters her. While MC and her inferiority complex is fully dependent and trusting of ML.

Tbh some parts of the novel unintentionally give off messed up vibes. I don't think the author... more>> intended on it but

Spoiler

MC has a terrible past where her mother killed herself and she was basically sent off to a poor nunnery with loads of apathy and trauma to grow up with. She 'worships' Lethe the Goddess of oblivion and later gets a 'blessing' where she her traumatic past memories fade away.

Genuinely I think this is so messed up. This is framed as a good thing but the whole idea of never properly processing trauma and just straight up forgetting to the point where your whole country's memory fades away in people's minds and yours and you have no hometown in your memory anymore. That's not healthy or a good thing. Like the whole epilogue starts off with her saying everyone has forgotten before she became ML's wife. That's pretty horrific to me.

Also the whole thing of ML being main God's favourite and everyone else being chopped liver to the God's whims only in relation to how useful they would be to ML

[collapse]

I was quite disappointed in the lack of romance. It's more about MC finally feeling safe and warm with ML but not scenes developing their romance? I don't hate the dynamic but I wish it was developed more. <<less

Intriguing story of found and born family, faith and the meaning of prayer, the place of God and nobility in the world, the purpose of forgetfulness, as well as warm tasty food. Seriously enjoyable. Thought provoking.

CW: Somewhat depressing thoughts and severe grappling with faith. (I found this very well done, but I know this is not everyone's cup of tea.)

The narrative involves very large themes and international politics, but also has a small and sweet young romance. Romance really isn't the main story IMO.

It's the right length with a... more>> satisfying ending. I recommend it! <<less
