I Don’t Like This Esper

Wouldn’t anyone imagine that from time to time?

A scene where your ideal type confessed to you.

“Hyung, I think I like you.”

……However, the reality was harsh.

“So, we’re dating, right? Today is our day 1?”

“Are you crazy?”

Of all things…… Of course!

The first person to confess to me in my life is the one I hate the most in the world!

This is all because of my nosiness.

Again, nosiness is a real disease.

I shouldn’t get involved with this guy!

Still, I am an ordinary citizen 1 and Go Geon-Young is an Esper.

Since the world is different, I thought I would do this in moderation…….

“I don’t like you because you’re ugly.”

“Your eyes must be really bad. Wear some glasses.”

“It’s 1.0, 1.2.”

“Then it’s serious…… It could be a brain problem.”

“It means I’m not crazy, my brain is perfectly normal, and you’re not my cup of tea.”

“Well, Hyung’s tastes are a bit old-fashioned.”

……That was also possible only when the opponent was an idiot.
Please! I won’t like a guy like you!

The MC is just a normal office worker who meets the Esper ML when he's nearly killed by a monster. The ML has a prickly and distrustful personality, and he suspects the MC of doing "something" to him with malicious intentions. He's kinda a bit*h anyway but is especially mean to the MC, so the MC doesn't like him either. But the ML is lonely and has no friends, and our MC is a pushover caring person who starts to pity the ML's circumstances and admire his heroics, so they... more>> somehow start becoming closer.

The first 60~65 chapters are the first "arc": world building, character building, relationship building... just establishing the setting and characters in a slice-of-life kind of way after a traumatic near-death experience in the first few chapters. The worldbuilding is surprisingly deep, and there are some details about this particular Hunter setting that are either unique to it or variations on common Hunter tropes that I think are interesting. An example (and also an explanation about wordage) :

When people develop superpowers, they "awaken". But they aren't called "Awakeners", they're called "Espers". Interestingly, the term "Esper" is used even though that term is usually associated with Korean Guideverse stories. This is probably because Esper abilities are shown to be more mental/psyche-fueled rather than game-like or magic-based as seen in most Hunter works (Espers' powers are effected by their mental state and they can overload themselves, but no Guides are required to heal or purify them or whatever. At least right now, who knows if something changes, I don't know anything past ch. 78 ¯_ (ツ) _/¯).

Then ch. 65+ comes. And you get into the next arc of the story.

I think it'll be more enjoyable if you don't read spoilers, but I'll put an explanation here in case you're disinterested in reading anyway/started reading but are considering dropping and want to see if future plot developments interest you enough to keep reading:

Spoiler

It turns out that this isn't just a Hunter/Gate story, but an Inter-dimensional Survival Game one, complete with Earth being one of many "servers" in a conquest game, forced to into a fight with hundreds of other worlds by higher beings for some reason. It's like Tower Climbing novels or Apocalypse Survival Game novels like Omniscient Reader, and it also has promises of strategic warfare/territory defense against various armies of Earth invaders. It's a genuinely good plot twist because it isn't foreshadowed in any way that's obvious but still makes perfect sense.

This makes this novel one of like four? maybe? BL novels in the Hunter genre that have a survival game aspect to them. The plot feels like it ramps up rather suddenly, but it kicks in right at the time where, in other novels, the story's plot would probably start reaching its peak before lasting for too many chapters and going stale. Shaking up the genre here can give this novel staying power by bringing new possibilities to the plot.

[collapse]

The ML is pretty irritating to me because he's the inconsiderate and unapologetic variety of persistent that I hate (though there is a scene where someone straight up says his attitude is the same as a middle schooler's, and that describes his level of emotional maturity exactly, so the author either made the ML this way intentionally or became self-aware about their writing lol). The MC is also way too much of a pushover to the point where it's annoying, especially because he's aware that he's a pushover but always folds to any kind of pressure anyway. They both get better as time goes on, but under normal circumstances they still would have brought down my rating by a star... but that spoiler tho. 5/5 <<less
