This is a confused novel. It has the juvenile touch of a power fantasy villain novel laced within it, but without the comedic touch a certain other Japanese novel has.

Basically, it's hardcore. It's grimy. It's full of grit, takes itself seriously, and everyone is scared of this villainous man. It's certainly alright in places, but I just found it a bit much to care about following the main character's antics. Specifically, I am just not fond of the movement of making a callous and unrelenting evil.

Sure, it's something plausible, but... more>> I just find such characters to be hard to relate to, hard to root for, and dreadfully dull to read about. He's a dry box of death, and I'm reading about this box moving about, killing things, all until the box can figure out why it's there.

He doesn't even have the goal of returning back to his world. He just holds the vague notion of finding out 'something'. This guy shits nails, I tell you. <<less

rating it 5 so far, but it could fall as this is an early review.

I started this as I have seen Chinese and Japanese novel takes on villains frequently, but less so Korean. I wanted to give a Korean villain novel a try to see how it might differ.

So far it is intriguing and has drawn me in. Some information I have drawn out that might help you more than the description (spoilers for the first 5 chapters) :

Spoiler

MC purchased a pre-release/early-release of the next game of Hero Wars. This game has been a long running series spanning 20 years. The MC is a veteran of the series.

MC has possessed Rain Gray, the leader of the mysterious Black Snake organization with twelve key members. Black Snake is an organization that has been a recurring villain over the long running game series. There have been some members in the past who have died, but the MC and his right hand Aria have never been defeated.

MC does not seem to inherit the memories of Rain Gray so he can only go off of his game knowledge of prior games. The backstory and background of Black Snake has never been previously revealed. The members of Black Snake are all incredibly powerful. By chapter 5, only 3 of the members have been named (not sure if Rain counts as a member) and only 2 have had some of their power set revealed.

Aria - seems to possess blade skills and is a blind swordsman. She is number 2 of Black Snake (unsure if Rain is number 1 or above the members). Her sword may also possess some sort of gravity collapsing ability.

Alice - She is number 12 of the Black Snake organization. Her power seems to be devouring things with her shadow. She is mentioned to be of Gluttony and seems to like consuming humans and inanimate objects. Frequently depicted as being hungry, but not a bottomless hunger (she managed to eat her fill of people in the first chapter).

Rain - possibly 1 out of 12 of Black Snake, and the in game world character possessed by the MC. He has been chain smoking the entire time, time will tell if this is a Chekov's gun scenario. He briefly managed to manifest lightning and when doing so hinted at potentially high levels of damage immunity.

We have not met the protagonist of Hero Wars (and unsure if it is the same protagonist or if each game had a different one). The Holy Maiden is being chased after by Rain as the only clue he has for the new game is that the cover art character was a Holy Maiden. In doing so, they come across the fact that someone has been misusing the Black Snake name, so MC calls together Black Snake to take action. Time will tell what will happen in the future.

Before you toss the novel aside because of the weak early chapters, the wish-fulfillment vibes, and the unexplained events that feel like plot holes, how about giving it a chance? I've only read up to chapter 39, and let me share my observations.

First off, the author seems keen on keeping the history of all the members of the Black Snake a mystery, including the protagonist's past. In the early chapters, we're in the dark about who they are, their purpose, goals, motivations, or even their identities. The history of each... more>> Black Snake member is shrouded in mystery, which sets this novel apart from others in the transmigration genre.

We experience the world solely from the protagonist's perspective. While he's well-versed in the game's mechanics, his knowledge isn't all-encompassing. Even his current body's goals are unknown to him, making him somewhat selfish but not inherently evil. We never delve into his past experiences, like his arrival in this world, his first kill, or his encounter with the Black Snake members—only vague hints.

Now trapped in this world as the Enemy of the World, bearing the title, he's goalless, except to survive and find a way out. He's also influenced by the former owner of the body's personality. What makes this protagonist stand out is that he's not a saint saving people left and right without reason. Despite being one of the strongest and leading elite individuals, he's aware that his death would be the end. He's not arrogantly Xianxia-like and knows when to back down, avoiding excessive evil deeds while still suppressing his modern mentality to survive.

The novel's potential is uncertain. While it starts with cliche wish-fulfillment vibes, it improves later on. Currently, the worldview is fragmented, and we lack information about what's going on, but the potential is there. It reminds me a bit of Omniscient First-Person Viewpoint or elements of The Eminence of Shadow, but it stands out with its own potential. I'm eager to dive deeper into the story and see where it leads.

PS. I gotta say, this ain't your typical harem situation. None of the women seem romantically into the protagonist—they're just fiercely loyal. Plus, almost half the crew is male or just genderless. <<less

Honestly?

There is nothing attractive too far in this novel... This is not a good thing, as not everyone will stick with it until the author decides to start the story.

Anyway, I would recommend that you wait for more chapters to be released and then read the reviews, you can then decide whether to read it or not.
