Three years after breaking up, Ji Yao encountered his ex-boyfriend, Jiang Heng, at a bar.

Jiang Heng was known in their circle as a playboy with a vast selection of potential partners, but with one good trait—he only dated one person at a time, never cheating.

Ji Yao had originally thought of himself as just an ordinary fish in Jiang Heng’s pond, until three years later when he saw the coin used to decide heads or tails on Jiang Heng’s bedside table.

Lawyer Jiang Heng X Doctor Ji Yao

Notes: 1: Adults, neither the top nor the bottom are perfect characters, and both have had previous boyfriends except for each other. The bottom was the ex-boyfriend in the past.

2: Both are at fault in the broken relationship, and neither is perfect

This book isn't bad, but I agree with the reviews that say the author holds MC accountable, points out his flaws, and forces him to communicate and fix his mistakes. But for the ML, the author always comes up with various reasons for him, which never come from his own mouth, but through the mouth of others. While simultaneously he is said to be mature, stable etc etc. But he communicates worst then MC. MC is indeed to blame for the breakup and even his entire plan of ... more>>

was cheating plain point no matter how you went around it because what if there was a good explanation? What if MC didn't come home in time? Imo, ML is more childish then him, but it's like the author does two different things in terms of describing ML and the actual actions ML does at key moments. We know MC is reckless and has commitment issues, the author doesnt let up on MC at all and im glad for it. But for ML, if he's calm and stable at ordinary times but loses the plot at key times, is he rlly as stable as the author claims? It's like he never progressed like MC did. A flawed couple with only one making progress and communicating isn't a redemption story in my eyes. Comparatively, this authors other works are very good in the mutual love mutual redemption, holding each other accountable aspect and I prefer them. <<less

I'm at chapter 62 and I genuinely feel so frustrated that I just want to drop this.

These two leads are so uncommunicative with each other that reading them feels like I bit off too much sweet potato and now it's stuck in my throat.

How were they supposed to understand what each other's fears and intentions were if they just kept going at it superficially?

The ML, especially, is always described as mature, rational, and sensible. But he himself never fully opened up to the MC! The author writes him as someone... more>> who has let go of the past & not letting it affect him blah blah and he was doing what he was doing because he wants the MC to do things purely out of his own free will blah blah but isn't his (the ML) behavior of keeping the MC guessing as to what he actually needs is a direct result of his past?

If the MC hadn't talked to the ML's mom about important things that the MC otherwise would never have known because the ML never talked about it, then how would the MC have realized that what he (MC) considered as a given is actually what was most important to the ML?

The ML also knew something about the MC's fears and shackles, but instead of helping him move on from it to heal and reassuring him, he just keeps him at a distance under the guise of "family matters are personal" or "JY needs to come out of it on his own". Like...? Are you serious right now? Your lover is burdened by all these and you don't even, at the very least, offer guiding words? Or maybe open up about how it has severely affected your relationship instead of hiding beneath the veneers of "sensibility" and "thoughtful consideration"?

The MC himself is of course, also frustrating, but I simply feel frustrated seeing the MC written as very flawed, while the ML is always described as mature, rational, big-hearted blah blah blah.

I understand the point of this story. Two broken people who broke each other further reunite and heal each other's wounds. But the way they were going with their "chasing" phase is so counterintuitive and you genuinely cannot heal from that. Healing begins with clear and open communication, and then reassuring & validating each other through actions. These two keep relying on tacit understanding and guesswork, falling short of mind-reading. <<less

An earnest, elegant character drama. The communication is about as good as you can get between two deeply harmed individuals operating in an implicit culture, helplessly doing their best. Those who hang their appetites on the direct, confrontational communication habits fashionable amongst modern English-speaking netizens may wish to exit early, but the way the two leads fumble and stretch for each other is entirely realistic for China. Be assured that both earn the understanding of what good communication means by the end.

Very notably, this author is actually respectful in their... more>> portrayal of Japan and other countries. The fine details of the MC's encounter with geisha show numerous inaccuracies (location, method of access, kimono design, naming patterns, etc), and ain't any sane human be wearing yukata outdoors in Hokkaido with snow still on the eaves, but that's esoteric knowledge that I wouldn't expect the standard reader to know or care about. The author can be considered an enlightened and well-travelled individual writing based on some authentic experiences; this book has none of the jingoism plaguing novels of Chinese origin, making it a particular pleasure to read.

A really sweet story of breaking up and then getting back together. Their breakup is also the fault of both parties, so no one is scummy here. Mostly MC's fault tho lol.

I'd definitely recommend this if you want a mature romance story with little to no drama.

Also, I'd like to thank the translator for superb quality and super quick translation!

The MC, Ji Yao, is a doctor who, as decribed by ML, is a "cat": prickly on outside, but once tamed he'll be really loyal and clingy to you. To my... more>> pleasant surprise, he's the one initiating intimate moments for the most part. He's also the one "pursuing" ML for much of the story! :O

The ML, Jiang Heng, is a lawyer who's gentle yet also playful. If Ji Yao is a cat, then Jiang Heng is definitely a fox. He's described by people as someone with boundless charisma and I think the author did a real wonderful job on showing off his charming aura.

They broke up because
Spoiler

MC, pressured by his homophobic parents, decided to get secretly engaged to a lesbian to make his parents happy. MC hasn't been coming to their house for like weeks because of exam at this point. ML found out the engagement from a third party and invited a stranger to their house (with the intention of sleeping with said stranger) in frustration. MC decided to visit their home and found the stranger showering, clearly about to sleep ML. MC justifiably got angry but then the ML then shot back at MC, calling him out for getting engaged behind ML's back. Yeah they kinda cheated on each other out of misunderstanding.

I'd divide this story into 3 arcs:

1. Lawsuit arc: here, our MC got accused of medical malpractice because of his patient complication. The lawyer of the one accusing him? Of course it's ML. :) 2. Pretend lovers act: ML suggested that MC should pretend to be his boyfriend so that he can show off MC to his mom. MC also start "pursuing" ML here.

3. Hokkaido arc: MC and ML got back together and they decided to go on a trip back to Hokkaido, the place where their relationship first started. Lots of parallel of 7 years ago vs their current relationship. The happily ever after arc, if you will. Lots of cute and sweet moments here. <<less

I had finished this novel in one day. I used mtl because I just can't get enough of the story of Jiang He x Ji Yao.

That's why, I'm already sleepy so I can't type for long. I just want to share that it's good. It shows a healthy relationship between two people. It's worth reading.

Both are wrong, both have baggage from their youths coming into the relationship. Hence their first time failed. However, tendrils of their love still haunts each other and when they finally meet upon chance years later, perhaps this time round, it could lead to something happy?

Spoiler

The setting of this novel is based on life, so it's not so much outward looking than it is inner looking, diving into their feelings and trying to break apart their past childhood trauma they both had, albeit in different kinds.

I feel this novel have a sense of psychological theme to it. Not the serial killer kind but more of the mind

I don't like the trope of people breaking off and coming back together because most of the time, they should just stay away from each other.

But I really like this story! Again, the breakup was ugly, but the story was mature and there was a lot to build back from the loss of trust. I like both characters, JY and JH and there is a certain maturity to them.

My only question is ... more>>
Spoiler

was there anything to that random plot line of JY lending his card to that friend of his who had an argument with his boyfriend? Because that scene felt like it was to brew trouble in the future but nothing happened.

Overall, a very nice read! <<less
