Ex-Husband’s Call

After the legalization of same-s*x marriage, Tong Qiu didn’t expect to be part of the first batch of people shoved onto the marriage market. A relative set him up with a man who had a handsome face and a great body – a police officer who used to work for the criminal investigation unit but became a uniformed officer after suffering an injury. Tong Qiu had a uniform fetish and the two of them got along and so, under the excessive urging of both of their families, they decided to tie the knot.

Before their wedding, they agreed that if they were incompatible after a year of marriage, they would get divorced and part amicably.

A year later, Tong Qiu said, “Huo Zhixing, let’s file for a divorce.”

Huo Zhixing’s friend asked him, “He said he wanted a divorce and you just agreed?”

Huo Zhixing: “Of course I agreed. We have to respect other people’s decisions. If he wants a divorce, then he can have a divorce. All I have to do is win him back.”

Important message: Communicate.

While emotional department was in turmoil due to these two not being able to communicate feelings, it actually picked up a pretty decent topic that can be relevant to a lot of people. A lot of problems in bed department are based on lack of trust, fear, shame and communication (due to temperament, upbringing, social ambience etc.). We're not telepaths, that's why you need to voice your needs, so your partner will know what you like and what you don't care about. We're all different, there will... more>> be sensitive people, there will be those that need more attention. But you won't know it all, if you don't voice those. But that's everything this novel conveys in the category of "good".

Although you understand why MC is like that, he has the status of a teacher, but many times he contradicts his words and actions. I don't respect him for the simple fact of going to hook up people almost the next day after divorce. ML never makes him feel bad or acted disrespectfully, he complied with his fake facade of a capable person, but in the end he didn't have any guilt or shadow diving right into debouchery. And it happened not once, he talks how he should act, but also goes for pretty dangerous stuff like one-night stand, because god forbids he refused his husband's invitation yet still wanting to *uck. I don't understand ML's actions too, like why he stayed silent? He heard him saying that their bed life was bad. What did he do? Nothing. Wanting to start from new chapter? What's the point of divorcing? Because you can do all that within the marriage and it would be good, maybe even better. The logic was lost on me with these two. PS: I still can't forget the ridiculous part about the wedding gowns. First of all the MC's front - dress, back - taxedo already sounds beyond ridiculous. To me author failed fashion thinking it's a good idea to combine two genders this way. And yes I consider it a mash between genders, not a topic of sexuality. I don't mind if gowns would be like that, but designers solved it long ago, by blending style and fabric that will wipe the dividing line, so there's no need to put two very gender defigning gowns contrastingly together. <<less

I've read it in raws. It's cute but I'm annoyed with MC. Since he is a teacher, he should have known the importance of proper communication.

MC divorced the ML due to being suffocated from his own facade and felt that this relationship lacked love.

Not as bad as some reviews say. It's a rather good story and entertained me enough.

The story starts when MC moves out after divorcing. Before they married both agreed that if they didn't feel right after a year, they could divorce with no questions asked. They were married for one year and MC felt the marriage was too bland, bad s*x, unromantic husband and exhausted cause he always needs to uphold the mask of beeing a mature person... not knowing this was a huge misunderstanding. So it's no wonder that... more>> after their marriage ended they seem to get closer to each other.

I read in other reviews a lot about how the MC is disliked for different reasons especially that he doesn't like ML but only his s*xual prowess later and his uniform. Also that ML sees himself as perfect. Both are not true.

Their relationship was overly polite where both men were hiding parts of their personality. MC had a mask of being mature, demure and responsibility, daily cleaning the house. In truth he is sloppy, hates doing household shores (don't we all) and his personality is more childish and a bit mischievous.

ML wasn't able to see through the mask early enough and fell for this misunderstanding. So he hid his own roughish side and behaved like a nearly chaste gentleman. When he realized that something was wrong and planned to have a heart to heart, MC already asked for divorce. ML just agreed while also planning to just chase the "real" MC this time and get him back.

There were and are deeper feelings between them and although MC allways says he divorced because of the poor sexlife, he also admitted that is only the pretext and there were deeper flaws that were the real problem... otherwise he would just have gone and teach his hubby how to do it (him). His own polished image prevented him and so they were not close enough.

After divorce both their masks broke. ML already had that idea and only furthered this reveal and instead of disliking each other, they feel in love.

True, the story has some minor issues and inconsistencies, also the writer grabbed a lot of drama storylines and meshed them in but it was ok.

It's more of a 3.5 but I gave 4 stars cause I do kind of like it. <<less

I don't want to say it's a bad story

I lt was very well written actually

However the MC... huh

... more>> The reason why he decided to divorce left me a whole speechless

He started the game himself, he acted on his own wanting to play the perfect man while wanting the ML to fulfill his without saying a word... then suddenly realized he doesn't want to act instead of trying to make things better with Communication he suddenly use the excuse of lack of love to divorce when it was just no s*xual satisfaction

Listen s*xual interc**rse can't just be left to 1 partner to decide how it goes about... it comes from both way... while we know that the ML just suppressed himself for the MC... at the beginning the MC didn't know... thinking that the ML didn't know much... hence he should have tried to communicate with ML but in the end didn't because he wanted to be the perfect man... when he couldn't hold his act anymore he just patted his but off...

While the ML does have some fault in this because he too didn't communicate but he just went along with the MC... of course a none satisfy s*xual life for him too at some point he would have left too...

These 2 probably didn't love each other at all... I mean aside from being attracted to the face of each other and the MC with the ML uniform

Even when they got back together I don't think they really did... the ML probably started to like the MC real side but the MC... it was just because he realized that the ML was good at s*x... hence I guess he fell in love the ML s*xual talent? Either way no matter how fluffy it looked like it wasn't love at all to me...

While many criticized the MC for trying to ho*kup someone just after divorce... I still don't think it was that much wrong I mean 1 year of marriage 11 times of unsatisfactory s*x... the moment of divorce meaning freedom you just want to let go... of course it's not the best act but it still ain't the worse

Atleast he didn't cheat in his marriage...

And another point the reason why the ML left the criminal investigation unit

They are going after criminals!!! You actually didn't wear bulletproof vests???!!!! Wtf

If it's a especially unit it means that you are investigating dangerous criminals meaning you have to be alert everytime you are going after the criminal... in this case it was a gang.... A GANG!! How can you not expect that the other party won't have guns???!!! How s*upid are you guys?

Its good to transfer to a normal unit <<less

This was a really fun read with lots of fluff and humor! Both characters are adults with demanding jobs so I enjoyed the more realistic depiction of their relationship (their ~bedroom activities were pretty realistic too and I found it sexy, fun and surprisingly hilarious). Even though MC and ML were technically married, their romance after the divorce was refreshing and sweet and had an almost fake-dating feel to it.

The contrast between MC's refined 'teacher' image and his true self was super funny and adorable and I also liked that... more>> ML was always a gentlemen but still had a flirty, seductive side. There's a great cast of side characters too with personalities that are very likable and their presence also added to the comedic feel of the novel.

And while there is a bit of melodrama, overall, it's a lighthearted read that's perfect for days when you just wants some laughs and a cute romance to warm your heart. :D <<less

I have to like the MC before liking the story. Which in this story, I can't like the MC.

Both of them at fault but I'm irritated by the MC. He's the one who portrayed himself as a 'perfect' husband and when he got tired, he want a divorce. Not trying to amend their relationship but a straight divorce.

In comparison, while ML also restraint himself towards MC, but his response when he realized that his marriage is unhealthy, he wants to talk. But before they can communicate, the MC ask for... more>> divorce and ML agree so they can have space, which is good. <<less

it's an amazing read but the author really needs to work on her fashion sense the wedding suit/dress was the funniest thing id ever come across in a while I couldn't stop laughing.

while I wish the characters just talked it out properly instead of creating elaborate plans to woo each other I guess we wouldn't have a plot then. I also felt that they shouldn't have rushed into marriage because when things don't seem right its absolutely necessary to go on a break and evaluate your relationship without the tag... more>> of being a couple and if they had just taken their time with their relationship they wouldn't need to make their break a divorce ffs.

The MC being someone who kept stressing the being in his thirties and being more mature he sure didn't put any effort of communication in the relationship same with the ML. What irked me the most was that the ML knew everything but still pushed the talk off like???

Haven't finished it so not rating it. At least a 3/5 so far (3 is decent but flawed, 4 is really good, 5 is very rare from me).

This is my second time trying to read it... the general writing style is easy to read and the two main characters overall are quite balanced and likable (though not perfectly written).

I'm just getting a bit bored and annoyed with the author.

The MC's got a best friend who's supposed to have been with him for years but she usually seems to be misunderstanding... more>> or ignoring his feelings, jumping to superficial conclusions about his needs or relationships etc. The ML has a subordinate friend whose only function in the story is to ask intrusive gossipy questions about the ML's relationships.

There's an often-mentioned scene featuring a wedding outfit for a same-s*x couple that was not only rather cringey, it revealed that the author has a very stereotype-based understanding of how most people in the LGBTQ+ community feel and behave in terms of sexuality/gender/identity. It's not ill-intentioned, it just reveals some common ignorant cis het cringey attitudes every now and then (I might not even have been sensitive enough to notice if I'd read this in my own more ignorant past).

The author also has a habit of repeating some of the more superficial things (for instance, it's mentioned often that the MC is attracted to the ML in uniform), but the more profound things they're trying to include aren't well explored (such as the hinted deeper reasons the MC has feelings for the ML).

Personally, I didn't have any major issues with the MC (I'm surprised he was the only one some readers were annoyed at for wanting to try their hardest for their spouse, and that some think real life teachers are perfect at human relations, as if they've never interacted with a real teacher before and know this clearly isn't true).

In fact, it's the ML that sort of bothered me. It's fine that the ML took a while to realise that the MC was trying to an unnatural degree to be perfect for the ML, but I don't really enjoy the way he subsequently refrained from reassuring the MC that he does have passionate feelings for him, that he doesn't care if the ML isn't refined and deligent at home, and that he intends to stop restraining himself. I appreciate that this is supposed to let the story show them gradually getting to know each other properly, but the author could have tweaked the premise if they weren't able to write the ML's behaviour more satisfactorily. Instead, it always feels like he's smugly watching the ignorant MC, secure in his own intentions and understanding of the MC's feelings, while the MC has to carry on believing that the ML wasn't in love with him, wasn't passionate about him, that they should be leading independent lives and feeling confused at the ML's behaviour. The author gives excuses for it, so it clearly isn't something that will bother everyone, but I can't help it detracting from all of the sweet, caring and romantic things the ML does. And he is so far a very thoughtful, caring and not too cliche ML.

I don't think this is a terrible story. I like the main couple enough to want to read an intelligent and sweet progression of their love story. I just am finding it not quite interesting enough to feel like persisting through the things that do irk me. I also don't have faith that it improves...I feel like the author is setting things up for the ML to become overbearing in certain ways - particularly in terms of s*x - and that it will be intended to be romantic and desirable. I'm not up for reading yet another story with that unenjoyable gong stereotype... (I may be wrong here. I hope I'm wrong, but these are the vibes I get when reading from the ML's perspective.)

Well, I'm not trying to discourage anyone from reading, I just wanted to share my thoughts about it. The basic standard of story here is far better than many lightweight stereotypical CN BL novels around, after all. And do bear in mind that these are my impression a third of the way through, not after finishing. They cannot be considered a proper review. <<less

Tong Qiu and Huo Zixing (whom I adore) marry shortly after a blind date. Gay marriage becomes approved by law and they marry. A year after marrying, they divorce, Tong Qiu citing that they just aren't compatible, but the truth of the matter is, they are holding their real selves back, not showing each other who they really are, out of politeness. They don't communicate; they don't have genuine passion in their marriage bed, and one of them is really fooling the other by portraying himself as more of a... more>> clean-cut guy than what he really is.

One is a teacher, one is an officer of the law. One of them has a uniform fetish, one of them wears a uniform.

See? No communication, long work days (and nights), and one pretending to be a better man than he is. He isn't a bad guy; neither is, but he has his own fetishes.

And he's a bit—um, wild.

They run into each other during a raid at a bar one night after their divorce and they realize that they still have feelings for each other. They develop genuine feelings and once those genuine feelings hit, this is a beautiful story of true love.

There tries to be a bit of a mystery that is too tidily wound up. I liked that aspect a lot and wished that there had been a lengthier storyline like that along the way. Tong-laoshi also found himself with an over ardent admirer, so I was glad to see that Tong-laoshi hadn't reverted to his old ways, but became himself with his husband, and no others. And that nothing untoward happened between Tong-laoshi and his admirer, who was more than a little creepy, himself.

And their mothers are a hoot, especially Huo Zixing's.

There's a side story of the love between two of Tong-laoshi's students and just enough drama to make you cry, or almost cry.

To sum up: I really loved this story. I loved the characters, and I loved how they grew not only as a couple, but as individuals, especially Tong-laoshi.

The extras are eye openers into their initial thoughts on each other.

A can't miss story if you like characterizations done right. <<less

* I'll rate after it ends.. 3/ 5 was enough.. But I like the last three chapters.. So 3.5 for now..

Slow burn.. A bit boring at first.. I'm amazed that they got intimate only 11 times in a whole year after getting married and sleeping in the same bed !! Really, once in a month !! They must have been monks in their past lives.. Their endurance is harder than steel..

Anyway, there's no twist or spark.. Even the misunderstanding that caused the divorce doesn't cause a wave at all,... more>> and it's solved as smoothly as butter..

The story actually becomes touching after the student's su*cide.. The words, the emotions, the suffering touch the heart.. This experience is something that many of us has lived through at some points in our lives, be it our own experience or as some spectators..

I searched for Thom Browne's wedding dress suit images.. And no offense, but it was hilarious.. I don't understand what's wrong with wearing ordinary wedding suits.. Just because they are gay doesn't mean that one of them has to have feminine touch.. <<less

A cautionary tale on showing your true self, especially when it comes to your desires... Great relationships among the main and side characters. A lot of instances will make you "hehehe" to yourself. Many thanks to the author and translator.

MC and ML had a wrong start, and by divorcing just give them a fresh restart! The communication issue that led to divorce made sense since they weren’t being 100% authentic self from the start, honestly think this novel deserves a higher rating!

Starting from a divorce, it’s about how MC and ML learned what went wrong and fell in love with each other again. No angst and the divorce was a mutual agreement, it focuses more on the fluffiness of rediscovering each other.

The story is pretty light and good... more>> to the heart! If you prefer angst and heavy plot then this is not for you. <<less

Ah a uniform fetish...

I really enjoy reading stories about former couples rekindling their romance. There’s just a gravitational pull when it comes to the tension, angst, regrets, the “IFs”- & I am a sucker for that kind of drama. School romance is cute & all, but sometimes a love story between two mature men wins my favor.

The story is about two hot fools who don’t communicate properly. Their whole marriage is basically a facade since they don’t really know the other’s true personality. It takes divorce & a bit... more>> of separation from each other to spur some epiphanies.

It reminds me of After Our Divorce, I Still Wore Your Jacket (which I love) & follows the main leads in their journey of re-falling in love with each other.

Some say MC is an idiot for never trying to properly communicate when he’s an actual teacher... others lament over the fact that the ML is only a fictional character. I am, of course, the latter. <<less

Overall, I liked the whole reading experience. It's nice reading about more mature characters and their love life as the MC and ML are in their thirties. They also have realistic problems such as bad communication, little time to spend with each other due to work and such. There are also a few societal problems being addressed like domestic violence, su*cide and crimes so it's not always happy and dandy.

I liked that the MC and ML learned about and grew closer to each other after their divorce. Well, it had... more>> to happen or the story would have been cut short at the first chapter.

There are only a few things I didn't like. One being the whole wedding dress shopping scene. The idea of gown/suits is really tacky. Besides that, the MC is also a bit s*upid sometimes and his thirstiness also turns off his brain sometimes.

But overall, the novel is still a good read. <<less

Refreshing idea. Amusing I think.

MC teacher who pretends right husband, but indeed lazy and pe*vert.

ML is policeman and have kind and honest personality. He doesn't cheat MC and deserve his love with own acts.

Their divorce was caused by simple misunderstanding, they was pretending for each other.

It's interesting read how they getting closer after divorce when they get rid of masks and can fell in love truly.

Fun and fluffy story.

This was quite sweet and fluff. A good read to take your mind to relax with something happy.

The whole divorce debacle, I can't take the thing serious. I think all they needed was communication. Being fake to each other in marriage unless you're plotting to scam the other for his or her wealth you shouldn't do that because it always ends badly.

I enjoy how they communicate after their divorced, that's really a couples goal. A teacher and a policeman really suit each other.

Side characters best friends, students, parents all of... more>> them are really lovely.

Side villains are also made pretty interesting, story runs short so we don't have much time for a lot of plot.

We did touch a sensitive subject in su*cide which was unexpected but it made things more realistic in general and do feel the emotions coming from that story.

This was a nice short read, nothings serious, just relax abit and enjoy it <<less

4.5 ⭐

0.5 deducted because I did not like how the ML did not really show that he did love the MC. From what i've read, it seems that their relationship was cold. Respectful and understanding relationship is different from a loving one. ML claims to have loved MC even while they were married but what's the point if the MC himself couldn't feel it.

I agree that the story after they divorced was cute af and super adorable. But I still can't agree that the actions of the ML was... more>> all that great during their first married life. At the very least, the MC tried his best to seem perfect infront of the ML and that was his way of showing that he loves the ML... though it's wrong because what's the point of falling in love when you can't be yourself infront of your lover. But then... at least he tried :/

BUTBUT im not bashing the novel and their relationship. I'm just trying to say that there are flaws but overall it's really a good read. I really enjoyed what happened after they divorced. A fresh start and a fresh relationship. No more lies and fake masks to hide who they truly are. This divorce is very much needed. Yeap. That's all. <<less

A story that teaches the importance of being honest in front of the ones you love. Hiding your true self from the people who care about you the most is rarely a good idea.

Our two main leads got married in a rush due to pressure from their families, with the caveat that if they weren't happy, at the end of the year they would get divorced no questions asked.

This is a story about not realizing what you had all along and a journey to find your way back home.

There's a... more>> couple nail biting scenes, but nothing too drastic or dramatic. It's mostly just a story about the ML never giving up on the MC, and fighting for their love.

It's a fairly simple plot with lots of sweet moments and a lot of innuendo. <<less

thoughts

this story is incredibly cute and chaotic which I wasnt expecting given the premise. But im very pleasantly surprised and I love how despite being mature steadfast adults theyre both incredibly funny and playful and awkward with lots of room to grow, and it makes for a pretty refreshing romance story.

how their marriage failed is hilarious to me because they werent communicating their kinks and fetishes at all leaving the other person to think theyre a prude and s*x repulsed lol. Their lack of communication also bleed to other aspects of their relationship of course BUT its so funny how tong qiu keeps bringing up how the reason it failed was because of his terrible s*x life.

tong qiu is a bit of an unreliable narrator, especially in the beginning, where he managed to miss all the signs that huo zhixing liked him and came to the conclusion that they both lacked s*xual attraction and therefore their relationship was shot. BUT what I do appreciate is how once that misconception is gone he's surprisingly easy to coax back into a relationship. He doesnt dither and drag his feet nor does he play hard to get - once hes interested he goes for it and I love that for him.

one thing I did notice is how the author kept bringing up the notion of teachers and policemen need to be untainted upstanding role models of society and I wonder how much of that mindset affected tong qiu's views of marriage and the role he had to play as 'the perfect husband of a decorated police officer'. Not only did he have to match up to the image to outsiders but also to his own husband. Which is baffling to me because huo zhixing never asked this of him and neither did anyone else, but he kept himself stewing in this preconception for the longest time and it ruined his own marriage.

im glad that once he got back with huo zhixing this line of thinking flew out the window because I dont think I can handle reading about someone so set in his conservative ways while sh*t talking his husband's bed skills lol <<less
