Building The Ultimate Fantasy

A young man sat on a chair and looked out at the ocean. With one wisp of Spirit Qi, he could point anywhere on this vast and expansive world, pointing at any place that didn’t look right.

Someone once became the last one to wield a knife that could decapitate huge dragons and bathed in dragons’ blood. Someone once loved treating others to chicken soup, so he kept nine phoenixes in his backyard. Someone once sat lazily on the top of mountains as his words flooded river banks, and his qi could hold a million soldiers back. Someone once moved mountains and shifted hills with just one brush, his paintings so captivating it could enchant immortals and deities. That year, the warmth of spring made the flowers bloom. They were merely an ordinary butcher, a bookworm, a chicken farmer and a poor artist. This is the story of how a Low Level Martial World Continent was transformed into the Ultimate Fantasy Universe.

I highly recommend trying this novel. It scratches a similar itch as History's Number One Founder in how the protagonist has to put on this mysterious and lofty facade while helping other people grow stronger.

Your enjoyment of the novel in the later chapters, however, will depend on your tolerance for the focus shifting to the different side characters of an ever-expanding cast. For me, so many chapters are spent on them that the pacing suffers and their scenes feel like the price of entry to get to the reveal of... more>> what is actually happening behind the scenes.

It feels that way because not only are these characters boring meatheads, a lot of the scenes are just about fighting and war. I get no sense of weight or tension to those fights because I am not invested in these side characters and I know that the protagonist will (predictably) have the truly important things under control.

For a novel that is about the development of a world, there is too much space dedicated to empty fighting instead of worldbuilding through say, the development of new technologies or cultivation techniques.

Disclaimer: I started reading this in the raws before the translation started so my review has nothing to say regarding the translation quality. <<less

Updated Review Again (Ch. 271, 3/5 (Because of the translation))

Honestly, the story itself, I still probably give it something like a 4.5/5. The plot has advanced to include more of the "other worlds" stuff which has allowed the MC back onto the scene. The novel has finally even picked back up translation again, huzzah right?

The thing that bothered me enough to come back and update my review again, and for the worse, is the translation itself unfortunately. Given my previous enthusiasm it must have been decent before, but my... more>> god has the quality nosedived itself straight into the dumpster. The translation itself is like a 2/5. Technically readable, but bad enough to the point where I think I've enjoyed reading unedited MTLs more before, because at least with those I didn't have any expectations.

Updated Review (Ch. 226, 4.5/5)

So, story has continued a bit from my original review, and I have to say, I am really enjoying this novel now.

So my previous primary concern was how the power progression would work and how there would be meaningful conflict if the MC is the source of everybody's new power (and also with how he was supposed to grow stronger as everyone else got stronger as well). Two things were introduced to solve this:

The first thing is the existence of other worlds. This is something implied from the beginning, by categorizing the level of the MC's world with a specific label. A ranking system implies there are enough things to require it. I just wasn't expecting people form other worlds so soon. Thus far the otherworlders seen are also below the level of the MC, but it still means that it is an option for the future.

The other thing done, is that the MC has actually taken a step back out of the mundane worldy conflicts. Instead, all the other rising cultivators of the world have stepped into the spotlight. I wasn't actually too directly attached to the MC as a character in his own right really, so much as he is a conduit for the system to affect the world, so I am actually okay with this. The MC has shown that he only cares about the rise of cultivators and not worldy politics, and has made enough examples of his strength that the people have stopped bothering him. The MC getting acknowledged as the strongest is good enough for me, and I don't mind that he no longer bothers with petty strife now. Seeing all these other characters growing and flourishing is actually really great, I like a lot of them. So this is really the point of the story, the growth of the entire world and the many people within it, it is not a story primarily about the MC.

Original Review (Ch. 96, 3.5/5)

An interesting premise so far. Remains to be seen if it can become something great or if it peters out.

So first, a summary since the actual summary doesn't do that great of job:

This is a transmigration system story. A guy transmigrates into an (originally crippled) young master and gains a system. The world he travels into is initially a "Low Grade Martial World", meaning that most practitioners are merely wuxia level martial artists, with just the top powers scratching on the door to xianxia. The system he gains wants him to then upgrade the entire world, not just himself.

So I find the general premise quite interesting. Story simply doesn't have enough chapters translated yet to see if it will remain good in the long run though. It seems like it may be a bit of a juggling act between the MC buffing his own faction and the world overall. There are elements of the system not entirely under his control, such that other people in the world will also become empowered that are not necessarily on his side. He obviously isn't disclosing to the world that he's responsible for the changes, but appears simply as one of (if possibly the most powerful) of these newfangled cultivators popping up. It's going to be weird if his own system produces and raises the only possible actual threats to the MC himself, but things might get a little dull if there's no enemies at all depending on how this goes.

I haven't exactly cl**ked with the MC himself yet, or those by his side. I actually like two characters outside his faction the most so far. Still, the MC is at least tolerable. He's not exactly a genius, but he isn't too dumb at least. He is extremely ruthless to anybody who crosses him, which is nice with enemies who would have reason to try again later, but feels a bit excessive against people who are just badmouthing him a bit. He's kinda so-so. <<less

The main character is the most pretentious person I've ever read about. Its frankly sickening.

The novel itself is interestingly done and focuses more on the effects of what the main character is doing than on the main character. This leads to more focus (and development) on other characters and the broader world view which is somewhat novel.

Could be rated higher but the main character is too up himself.

I immediately knew I would have issues with this story when the MC transmigrates and already has three maids serving him. "Foxy, " is used as a descriptor way too much, ugh.

I still ready a little more, but I couldn't stand how the MC was jumping right into major political conflicts and war even on the first day he transmigrated. Like, not even 24 hours to adapt? Why would he even have any idea of what to do? And he definitely should not be this instantly okay with bloodshed.

I kept... more>> reading, because I'm a sucker for MCs who pretend to be powerful. By chapter 10 there were some better scenes.
Spoiler

I like when he is pretending to be an immortal, and the way he can somehow use programming to alter cultivation techniques is a bit interesting.

But in the end it's just not my cup of tea, so I dropped it. <<less

Another novel that has deteriorated, the MC is no diff from those hypocrite buddhas, he killed the dragon for eating humans coz humans have vital essence that will lead to its animality but all life has vital essence that is one disgusting attitude.

MC is high above theclouds, expect on the future many discrepancy on mc's judgement.

(old review)

I might be too generous here, but in the market of light novels, especially of these genres, it's really hard to find a good one.

I don't like the author's other work, so I was quite surprised as I read this and really sad when I found out they stopped translating it. Nevertheless, I'm now following the raw and it's pretty easy to get around, so I still recommend others to give it a chance.

I basically have no qualms with anything up to 264. I'm slightly farther in... more>> the raw, but my opinion remains the same.

The things I really like about the story is the side character, which are invested in as in Tales of Herding Gods. They are not shallow and grow. The system aspect is slow for me, but still interesting. No harem or unfounded romances! (End of old review)

Up to 264 I'd still rate it 4-5 stars, but after finishing the story I got to say it's really disappointing. So much inconsistencies and plot holes. They are not horrible as those in the majority of action light novels, but they still lower the rating to 2-3, depending on the mood. <<less

It was interesting at first, but the later plot got really boring and had many problems.

Spoiler

He promoted his world in a rush when he could simply just wait more, it's not like the world was losing anything. Just break through another 1-2 layers then promote the world and you can protect it maybe?

Also the plot got boring as it went like everyone wants a piece of this new world, he levels up and kill them. People behind the people he killed comes and same thing happens again and again.

I finally finished this after many months of constant reading and I have got to say, this is definitely my top most novel as of yet.

I love the characters, they all feel fleshed out and not 2d, they all have their own goals and inspirations.

The world building, The world building is what hooked me to this novel from the start, I loved the premise and I'm glad I stuck with. Seeing everything fall into place that almost felt normal not forced.

I recommend others to give it a try, you never... more>> know if you might end up liking it. <<less

Its Great it is something that has not really been seen before at least not in the way the author does it we have seen novels where the MC has created the world and influences it etc. But this story is not that its one about the world and about how the MC brings changes to the world.

Our MC Lu Fan (pang 'an? Confusing everyone calls him pang'an but his name is Lu Fan) Transmigrates into this world with a system that is meant for him to make this world... more>> a higher level one eventually becoming the ultimate fantasy the person whose body he takes over is a cripple who can't walk.

In the system this world is classified as a low level martial arts world and that is for good reason because it is more of a wuxia world then xianxia for example qi doesn't exist only spiritual energy qi is a legend in the world. And so the MC brings qi to the world making cultivators. And so this is a good story with a lot of other characters that become a bit more important then the MC its more of the story of the world then the MC story.

Spoiler

it is still a low level martial arts world right now with some cultivators at the first level of cultivation the other characters such as the overlord are weaker then the MC and his sect/power White Jade City the MC is masquerading as the strongest person in the world (which he is) and he likes to say its so fun to fight against immortals which he is and is making people think they exist and they are bringing back the qi of the world.

A sieve has fewer holes and a pudding is more consistent than this novel.

The author doesn't decide if it's a story of transmigration to another world or time travel to ancient china (In one of the first chapters the author says that the MC has traveled in time and he calls the world earth sometimes too).

The Zhou empire is the world, the Japanese (look like demons) /Koreans, Indians (bald and the alien leader is called buddha), Europeans (blonde with blue eyes) are the savage barbarians who do not produce anything... more>> and only know how to kill and plunder and deserve to die even if they are women and children.

Does it cost to invent random names and characteristics? Communism kills creativity??? <<less

Really enjoying this story but istg the translation has completely gone to sh*t around chapter 200. The most egregious example is definitely the cultivation realms. It honestly feels like the realms have their name changed every single chapter and there are now like 5-6 different translated names of the same realm that are in circulation each chapter and it's painful to read.

The worst part is that it seems like it's still the same studio translating so I genuinely have no idea how the quality and consistency have dropped this much.

I'm... more>> gonna give another 100 chapters a try but if it still stays this bad im probably gonna have to drop it :/ <<less

Well very interesting novel, mc's power level concept is very fun to read. But Author has balantly copied historical Fall of Qin Dynasty and war of chu-han contention, turned it into a novel. MC is only the external variable. Nothing extraordinary chinese audience may not even like it cause overall plot moves exactly like history. With xiang yu named as xiang shaoyun. Even author admits plot developmet is too similar to history

" What is this, The hongmen banquet? (Banquet where xiang yu planned to assasinate liu bang but later... more>> changes his mind and liu bang flees)

Lu Fan laughed

It was funny coincidence but it was not real hongmen banquet"

So you can see even though author has been creative but he used all creative points in power system and made plot too similar to real history.

The good part is MC is very op and there is no tension whatsover but its very interesting novel. I advise you to give it a try its very enjoyable. <<less

I've been looking for a decent worldbuilding/kingdom building novel for a while. There's just something special about having an MC that can play the role of god and influence things behind the scenes. And I have to say this one starts exactly like that. But it got boring real quick. First of all the idea of him imparting qi in the world is not interesting. I'd rather he came in world with few resources and had to build his faction and from then level up the world. Yeah he plays... more>> a god here but for it to work the side characters need to be interesting. None of them are. I thought of putting it on hold at first but I'll just drop it here. <<less

In terms of story, this is a very interesting story. This is a fairly new genre for me, but I immediately fell in love with it when I read it. Although the ending is a bit unsatisfactory, overall it is very good. One thing that bothers me is that there are too many characters. The characters at the beginning of the story are quite a lot, and throughout the story, the characters continue to grow and almost nothing decreases. For me, who has a bit of trouble remembering names, this... more>> is quite a headache. And also the translation is quite confusing, sometimes there is a term in English in the previous chapter that becomes pinyin in the next chapter so it is confusing. And the pronounce of she and he are mixed up. <<less

This novel is hard to rate, somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It has a good background story where a transmigrator goes to a new world and needs to complete a series of quests from "the system" in order to make the world a cultivation world. He guides cultivators and in return, he will get rewarded with points as they get stronger.

The downfall of this novel is that our MC, instead of acting like a hormonal dumb teenager in other MC's, act like a 10, 000 year old sage that... more>> has lived forever. There's no reason or explanation for him to act wise and all-knowing 99% of the time except for the author deciding that was how he was going to write the MC that way. And the MC is so stuck on being unfathomable and mysterious that he just does whatever he wants without telling anyone. Even his father is out of the loop where he does stuff to change his father's territory. And when the author runs out of ideas for the MC, he would drag out the novel by introducing more POV of other people instead of focusing it on the MC.

The second and most critical is that the translation goes to crap around chapter 200's. It was readable in the beginning with normal grammar mistakes, but in the 200's of chapter count, you keep getting name changes and cultivation realm changes that knock you out of immersion. This pisses me off the most because translation actually ruined the story so much that I had to come here to write a review instead of waiting to novel completion,

My recommendation is to give this novel and try but be prepared. <<less

"Building The Ultimate Fantasy" finally finishes today, so I thought I'd finally post my review.
I want to say it ends with a bang, but honestly it was more a fart. Building The Ultimate Fantasy was quite an interesting story (at first at least) with the premise that a guy wakes up in a mundane wuxia world with a system and a mission: "elevate this world from mundane to the Ultimate Fantasy World". It starts off very solid, with the MC slowly introducing Qi to the world and steadily upgrading both the world and the people in it. There is a strong focus on the characters and the MC is largely in the backdrop because that's his role. He isn't front and centre stage because he is the one behind the scenes putting everything into action. This leads to some very interesting and some very well fleshed out characters who really FEEL real. However unfortunately as time goes on this starts to fade. It's really in the second half that things change.
Spoiler

Once he reaches the stage of Immortal World and is introduced to the greater universe, things start to take a turn for the worse. Those previously well fleshed out characters get steadily less and less screen time while the MC gets steadily more. The MC starts having to deal with all the big bads, and the story changes from "look at this guy building a cool fantasy world" to "look at this guy stomp over these monsters, then do a token effort of raising the strength of the small fries beneath him". Towards the latter half of second half, things start to really noticeably rush. To the point of the ending chapter, where after the previous huge build up of getting a massive army, building these cool worlds, gaining these strong powers, the MC in a single chapter meets the big bad, learns he is (unironically) 85 orders of magnitude stronger than the MC, the universe gets destroyed, then the MC fixes the universe and everyone gets revived, and they all go on to the "next adventure". Also if you are expecting him to reach level 100 of Qi refining I have bad news for you. He only gets to the peak of 14 by the very end, though there is definite foreshadowing earlier on that this was going to occur, so it wasn't a particular surprise.

[collapse]
Spoiler

One of the most cool parts of the first half is that he is literally building the cultivation system from the ground up. He literally invents and designs each stage of the cultivation system. Even when he find other worlds with their own established cultivation, he still continues to make his own version of each level. But once again once we reach the second half that entirely tails off. Near the start of the second half he essentially creates the rest of the cultivation system which was basically "gather luck and get stronger". They are basically not expanded upon after that and no point is made about how it differs from the previously existing levels of cultivation.

[collapse]
Overall, a story with a solid start that loses its steam halfway through and rushes to an end. I'd rate the first half as a solid 4.5. I'd rate the second half as 2.5. It has it's moments, but somewhat loses the charm it had at the start.

You know, the novel had its highs and lows, and the ending was a low for me after reaching so high.

It.... Is a disappointing ending, and it feels rushed. 2 is making me feel generous. If it wasn't for the world building step by step I would ha e rated lower.

No harem, just maidservants. He really is above everyone to the point the strong characters of the world that he raised always comes back to him for his help. There isn't any shocking overturning ability from any of these... more>> people (ofc, individually they have their own interactions and the like, but a lot could have been fleshed out)

The characters aren't one dimensional, and near the end, the strong side characters already had their stories explained or fleshed out (not completely).

Inheritances of various arts are also vague and never properly developed in the later stages (Refining, alchemy, formation, arts)

All other stars (worlds) in the starry sky feels like a backdrop and they don't contribute sh*t in fighting against their enemies; all strong ones are in the heaven realm or not strong enough.

And when he upgraded to a high ranked world, didn't he plan to add more continents in the 5 phoenixes, but did not merge the lands to it (no additional continents) and were presumed to have transformed into one of those planets. <<less
