This is an amazing pseudo-European medieval fantasy with a heavy political focus. And here’s the key to enjoying it:

this is Slan’s story.

There are no “co-protagonists” in the way you might expect. He is the main character. He is the one who struggles, who endures, who keeps going. He is the story.

Why does this matter? Because at some point, you’re going to get absurdly frustrated that no one comes to save him - especially his supposedly powerful boyfriend not swooping in to rescue him. And in that moment, you really... more>> have to remember: this isn’t that kind of story.

I felt that same helpless frustration. But once you finish the novel, it puts everything into perspective. Jiyod never stops fighting for Slan, never stops sacrificing for him - but he’s not an omnipotent savior. And maybe that’s the point. This story leans more into realism than you’d expect. In a way, it’s about a fish learning how to save itself from drowning.

And Slan... my poor little fish.

This book will hurt you. Not just because of what happens to him, but because for a long stretch you don’t fully understand why it’s happening. The first half is drenched in this constant, gnawing mystery - what exactly broke him, what he went through, who he can trust, and who is quietly complicit. You’re reading through layers of emotional damage without a clear map, and that uncertainty makes everything more suffocating. It’s not just pain, it’s disorientation.

But in a way, I’m actually grateful the author places Slan’s past - before the madness and s*avery - towards the end of the book. Because if you knew where he fell from earlier, it would have been almost unbearable to get through.

I hated everyone who wronged him. The cruelty can be brutal, especially early on, but it also rather fits the time period. This is enlightenment pushing against the dark ages. There’s a lot of suffering before anything resembling light appears.

The structure reflects that too: the first half is heavy, painful, disorienting, full of ab*se and unanswered questions

the second half opens up into larger-scale politics, rebuilding, and finally some sweetness! That’s also where you get more of Slan and Jiyod together, along with their backstory, which adds a lot of needed context to their relationship.

I’ll also give Jiyod a bit of slack here. From the author’s perspective - and you’re free to judge how romantic or unromantic this is - the reason he doesn’t really provide “emotional support, ” and doesn’t seem to care about Slan’s madness, memories and "c*astity" is because none of it changes anything for him. To him, Slan is still Slan, no matter what’s been done to him or what he’s become. His madness, his past, the trauma - none of it alters how Jiyod sees him. And in his own limited, possibly flawed way, that kind of unwavering recognition is his version of love.

There’s also a manhwa adaptation with very beautiful, but also realistic art. I kinda of feel it leans more romantic in depectic smut and softens or skips some of the more sordid details, which might make it a better entry point depending on your tolerance.

I highly recommend this story for what it is: not a rescue fantasy, but a testament to endurance. It’s about someone clawing their way back to themselves, piece by piece, no matter how much was taken from them. <<less

Soooo good! Tight plot, well-developed characters, tension... And the side story brings it all full circle and answers all lingering questions. You can't help but reread the main story again after you finish the side story. 10/10, well done.

Recommend. I came here after reading the webtoon version. So far I can say :

1. Well developed plot and well written, even the secrets are revealed bit by bit but not in annoying way, so readers are hooked

2. Even tho uke is living miserable life as a s*ave, it's still bearable to read, due to many people are actually caring about uke but they do that secretly for fear of angering the bully. The bullying is severe tbh.

3. ML is kind person and he loves MC so much it's reassuring.

Spoiler

they both already lovers before MC lost his memories, but ML still by his side reassuring things for uke. Their re-romance development is also nice and not rushed. Uke even tho he can't remember their couple memories, he didn't pushed away ML and could accept him

[collapse]

4. MC/uke is just a good person with good nature.

Spoiler

When he was a lord, he was benevolent, that's why servants and normal people are trying to get close to MC. MC isn't proud person, he accepted his sin and his punishment as a s*ave, he didn't whine for only wearing 1 set of clothes & shoes. He does his jobs. Even tho he talk back, it's not in obnoxious rude way, he was really just asking. When the bully asking him to to something dangerous (like go into the deep river) or do something humiliating (wash bully feet, being his stool etc) MC just did it without complaining. But he knows what was beyond normal (like s*xual assaults or physical assaults). What bully does actually is kinda forbidden, because s*aves are not to be treated badly, moreover of the s*ave is from noble origin.

[collapse]

5. MC is normal I guess. He isn't very smart but he is also not s*upid.

Spoiler

He doesn't blabber his mouth about meeting ML or their love rekindling. He doesn't tell people his memories returned bit by bit. Why I said MC isn't very smart is because, even tho MC doesn't trust the bully, he still has little trust in his sister, like??? You've been ab*sed for 2 years and you still try to believe her? Her brother won't be able to ab*se you if she really protect you dude.

[collapse]

6. ML is smart but his position isn't high, he is only illegitimate child. But many people actually support him. ML is much more quick witted compare to MC because he realized many oddities around MC circumstances.

I m very intrigue to know the truth behind MC "sin" to the point he was reduced being a s*ave. All that happened when ML was away and couldn't come back for 2 years. <<less

Oh, behold yet another MC who chooses to fester in an abusive relationship, when he could just—poof!—report his tormentor to the higher-ups, beg the main ML for a rescue, or, I don’t know, sprint away to freedom with or without his knight in shining armor. Honestly, death’s got to be a better vibe than this pathetic existence. And our swoon-worthy main ML? He just lounges on the sidelines, watching the MC suffer like it’s premium entertainment, doing nothing except enjoying steamy sessions with him.

If I were the ML, I’d storm... more>> the palace, ally with enemy nations, or burn the world down to save my love—but this guy? Zilch, unless you count banging the MC as heroism. This story’s pure tr*sh—I came for a good time, not to pop BP pills in rage.🤮🤮 <<less

I think the plot is good but the presence of the ML is too annoying. The MC suffers A LOT (is that kinda story) but there is no emotional relief, care, rage, questions etc from the ML -which is what I like and hope for, even if it's delayed... but no. The only thing that the ML gives/does is s*x. He doesn't show any reaction. He doesn't care (like, actively care..) he doesn't protect (and he is "powerful", yeah).

ML is kinda useless, just like other comment said, the dude is... more>> a "powerful knight" but literally does nothing, he just waits for the MC to appear, to just enjoy steamy sesions. I love a powerful and h**ny ML, but this one feels decorative, useless, and honestly unbothered by the mc's pain?. He just says that he's gonna help him in the future but he literally doesn't show any reaction to his suffering.

Had to dropped it. Even if there is a change in the future which I guess it must, it's not worth for me (something really grave happened to the MC, like really my guy was really hurt, almost dropped dead... and the author literally gloss it over without ANY EMOTIONAL RELIEF, any acknowledgment from the ml??). It was that dissaponting. Can't fall for that love story.

Spoiler

After a long journey/escape of suffering where our MC is pretty battered, the author chose to reveal something of the ML, forgetting the mc's injuries completely. ML behaves like an a*hole to the MC, and even the f*cking NEXT morning they f*ck. What's the point of the suffering if we are gonna forget it literally the next chapter? What about his injuries? the trauma? this felt so unsatisfying. It's like all the injuries dissapear and we must forget about it? this is torture.

Just started this due to reading the comic the story is very intriguing. MC suffers from mania and memory issues, and is mistreated by his master. He suffers allot and the ab*se can be strong, so keep that in mind when picking up! However, the writing of the ML as a place of solace and comport for the MC is so touching and beautiful. I hope ML is able to rescue MC!!! Like I'm so worried for baby!!!

The mystery behind MC disease is well handled so far I can't wait... more>> to figure out the truth of what cause the incident and whether MC is being manipulated. It's hard to trust many characters because of how they interact with MC. Plus they seem to remember few details of their own life. I feel bad for them.

Anyway big recommend, just know there's suffering here!!! <<less

I just read manhwa yesterday and I absolutely love this!

One thing made me fond of it is how passionately Lyod loves Slan. His affectionate look, his strong hugs, the way he loves cuddling Slan... He's a forest to me! The slowburnt love line now makes me just wanna read it more and more, ... more>>
Spoiler

they're lover before and Lyod had been waiting for him for 2 years and he kept staying at Kallak despite terrible treatment. No one could bear that but his love gave him so much strength to keep on going. One more thing is, Lyod said he'd never leave Slan alone ever again because he once did in the past (which he regretted) and I think he couldn't help or do something with Slan during that hard time, which led him this situation as a s*ave. Therefore, I believe there's aomething hidden about the lord of Kallak's death and Slan's madness.

[collapse]

Besides, I love Slan too, I'm curious what led him this situation. He's kind and had a vision at his position before I think. To me, he has his thinking and kinda smart and educated and so calm 😭

Not only main character and male lead, I like the well character developement for others. I wonder what led Lister did Slan dirty like that.
Spoiler

He's just like a childish kid to me. At first he seemed just fine with mean acts and he wanted Slan to react to him, but look at how he violenced Slan, I don't think it's just as simple as I thought. He's bad and makes the climax of the story even pushed.

[collapse]

I also love the context so it's a highly recommendation from me.

As a someone loving this piece of work, I hope there's more attention because it's worth it. <<less
