Heartbreaking and tragic... these were my conclusion after reading the final chapter. And then I don't want to give a da*n anymore about FL and ML's wellbeing because I'm all for Cheng Bai, the pitiful 2nd ML who really deserved happines more than the two leads.

In the past life, FL saved Cheng Bai from s*avery and then they separated way. After he came back several years later, he learnt that FL committed su*cide from heartbroken. Didn't want FL's soul to dissipate, he made a pact to God so FL's soul would be left intact. As an exchange, Cheng Bai sacrificed his emotion for all his lifetimes until FL got together with ML again.

Not enough of making him emotionless, he was also destined to spend his life alone for the rest of his life. I think it's so cruel for Cheng Bai to have that kind of fate. He clearly did a good deed but it's like he was being punished because of his kindness. And FL didn't even know his sacrifice and treated Cheng Bai like sh*t.

I think the novel's title suited Cheng Bai more than ML because he was always there for FL while ML only came later. Speaking of ML, I didn't like how he liked FL just because she was the reincarnation of his past lover or something. He even called FL by his past lover's name when he kissed her for the first time. It proved that who he really liked was his past lover, not the current FL but FL, even after knowing the truth, still foolishly accepted him. When they got together, I didn't feel happy for them at all, instead I wish Cheng Bai would finally have the happiness he deserved after all those times. <<less

while I understand cheng bai 's story and how tragic it was cheng yuanyuan didnt treat him like shit. (in reference to the most recent before my comment) . Cheng bai wasnt always there for the FL he was indifferent and fell in love a little later (although this happend in accordance with his previous life sacrifice...... again in reference to the most recent comment before mine) now that his "curse" is broken I hope he is loved and loves in the next life or this one. The ML was also forced into a corner too

Finally, they went through their own hell although cheng bai had it worse

Hmm, I liked this author's other works, but this one didn't pique my fancy. I didn't particularly like the main characters nor feel their supposedly deep love for each other. The plot is more slice-of-life and there's a calm feeling throughout; which can usually work only if the novel compensates in other ways (if it's very sweet, scary or interesting etc). This one was a bit boring and uninteresting for me.

I'd rate it 2.5 stars

First 2 chapters put me off due to poor quality of the translation but thought I try it again and fortuitously the change in translator made a huge difference. Sweet and sometimes bittersweet story of tragic past lovers who through karmic cycles find each other again. The 2ML Cheng Bai gives a nice twist with the is he or isn’t he the ML. His backstory is quite sad and moving with his sacrifice for the FL also linking back to the first lifetime.

I have always liked Celine Gu's novel and I was wondering why this one have received such low rating.

Like the other of Celine Gu's novel, this story is fluffy and heartwarming love story that span a millennium. The problem is the ending, it has a happy ending with the main MC and ML, however the extra at the end that tells from the second ML's POV is sweet but very heartbreaking. It makes me feel that perhaps the second ML deserved the MC more than the ML. I don't really want to spoil it for everyone so I'll be a bit vague here; basically the reason why the second ML was so emotionless was because of his sacrifice for the MC in their previous life because she had saved him before in that life.

After the happy ending, we were unexpectedly given this heartbreaking insight! 😭😭😭😭😭
