A Potentially Epic Tale Tainted by Deplorable Content

I reluctantly threw in the towel at chapter 162, despite the story's initial promise. The narrative follows an intriguing protagonist - a flawed man on a path to greatness, marked by moral ambiguity, persistent weaknesses, poor choices, and extraordinary luck. While the plot had me hooked, I stumbled upon content that trampled my ethical boundaries, forcing me to close the book for good.

Positive elements:

- Compelling character arc

- Potentially gripping storyline

Mild spoilers ahead:

Spoiler

Deal-breakers and TLDR:

  1. Revolting sexualization of minors: The author portrays children as young as 10 in s*xual scenarios, which is profoundly disturbing and utterly unrealistic.
  2. Twisted family dynamics: The protagonist's wife offers up her 17-year-old daughter (the protagonist's stepdaughter) for marriage, leading to in*estuous encounters. This depiction of family relationships is both fantastical and morally repugnant.

I'd ignored the warning signs for about 100 chapters, clinging to hope for improvement. It never came. What could've been a phenomenal read was obliterated by yet another male author's compulsion to indulge his warped fantasies and drag readers through his depravity.

I'm not opposed to exploring dark themes when they serve the narrative, but this doesn't. There's zero grasp of these situations' gravity. No 10-year-old would eagerly offer themselves sexually. A real child would be terrified, not blushing shyly. They'd be traumatized, not coyly flirtatious.

Historically, 10-year-olds weren't considered for childbearing because it made no sense. Girls reached puberty much later and had better odds of surviving childbirth when older. Even in the most misogynistic societies, there was a basic understanding that human survival hinged on women's survival. There's simply no logic in having girls die needlessly. Humans who had mastered cooking and animal husbandry certainly grasped this obvious fact. So there's no justification for sexualizing children. Men who sold or wedded literal kids were seen as social pariahs. It has ALWAYS been abhorrent. In a story with extended lifespans, what's the rationale for this mindset? There isn't one. It's nothing but a depraved wish-fulfillment fantasy. It wasn't crafted to make a poignant statement or further the plot. There's also no cultural justification like we see for the prevalent violence.

Sure, you could argue the MC is an unreliable narrator, but what about his wife offering up her 17-year-old? No sane mother would do that! This wife is supposedly deeply caring and 'virtuous'. It's telling that his depiction of a 'virtuous' wife is one that allows him to use both her and her daughter sexually. An act that has ALWAYS warranted widespread disgust and a trip to the gallows if the perpetrator wasn't powerful. So, it can't be hidden under the guise of 'historical accuracy'.

As our author explores the complexities of human relationships and life through his ML's search for 'Dao', we see every other morally bankrupt act our MC commits cushioned with some introspective commentary, making it clear that both the author and the MC are aware of the immorality. We understand the rationale behind these acts, justified or not, and sometimes the ML faces consequences later. Yet nothing of the sort happens for ML's s*xual depravity.

Why does the story conveniently ignore the trauma of child s*xual ab*se or a mother pimping out her daughter? Because the author doesn't see things that way. It was just thoughtlessly written because the servant girls, ML's wife and stepdaughter exist solely for the author's twisted wish fulfillment. It's vile, immoral, abhorrent, and reflects the licentious author's twisted desires. I'm out!

[collapse]

I understand that for some, it's not a dealbreaker and can be an easily ignored part of the story. If you're willing to stomach it, go ahead. The actual plot removed from all of this depraved rubbish is decent. It's a journey I would have willing embarked on if the s*xual content was to the minimum however it's continuously increasing in chapters and I fear for the future as the in*est was the straw that broke the camel's back.

This makes me reminiscent of 'Re:Monster' quick decline into deplorable rubbish however this story is nearly not as unhinged but I'm not optimistic about the future. Once again, a male author's apparent compulsion to indulge in questionable s*xual fantasies has gotten in the way of telling what could have been an amazing story. <<less

This is the translator...

Not too long ago, I ran out of interesting translated web novels to read, so I decided to hit up Zhihu (basically the Chinese version of Quora) to see if there were any hidden gems that never got translated. I stumbled across a post where over 7, 000 people shared their top 10 web novels and explained why they loved them. To my surprise, there were a lot of well-known novels that we never even knew existed.

One novel that kept coming up was a xianxia-type called *A... more>> Sect Leader’s Ascension*.

At first, I wasn’t really interested because I usually go for stories with a solo MC who’s a bit selfish, lol. Plus, the title and synopsis seemed pretty generic to me.

But it kept popping up—some people were even putting it on the same level as classics like *Mortal’s Journey to Immortality* and *Reverend Insanity*. So, I decided to look it up. Turns out, the novel has a dedicated fandom, with tons of discussions about it on forums and websites. It really has its own hardcore fanbase.

I had no choice but to check it out, and oh boy...

Overview:

The novel primarily revolves around the main character who becomes the leader of a small, weak sect and the struggles they face in their journey to survive and grow.

Review:

When you talk about classic “farm management” xianxia novels, this one is a must-mention.

The story follows an ordinary, insignificant middle-aged man who hasn’t really accomplished much and has a mind-reading ability that doesn’t do much for him (unlike in other novels where special powers quickly lead to success), leading a group of underdogs through the tough journey of survival in a cruel world full of tangled power struggles..

Watching them build up their sect from scratch, step by step, the author does a great job of showing the ins and outs of the cultivation world. The plot is gripping, and the side characters are fleshed out so well that they feel three-dimensional, with everything making sense logically. Even the minor villains, who might usually seem like typical troublemakers, are smart and well-thought-out.

This is a refreshingly real and deep Xianxia novel. While it has its satisfying moments, the overall vibe is pretty heavy and intense. The MC is genuine and relatable, but the endless struggle through a sea of hardships is what makes this novel stand out. The writing is polished, with well-handled foreshadowing and setup. There are very few plot holes.

The story starts with the MC facing some rough patches and doesn’t exactly make him all-powerful right away, so if you're looking for an unstoppable hero right away, this might not be for you. <<less
