The story flows well and the writing/translation are both very readable.

The problems though are large. The characters are fundamentally not believable. While any one aspect might work their overall gestalt just doesn't jibe. The princess is a doormat that doesn't mind being treated poorly. Okay this is possible. The hero is also a doormat that doesn't mind being treated badly nor seeing those important to him treated badly. The king/father is just all over the place and is self contradictory.

The story is trying to make a point about something. I... more>> am not certain what that something is, there's a bunch of possibilities. However damned if I can say what it was aiming for or very much care.

Bottom Line: Thankfully it was short. <<less

That was a beautiful story. As I was reading it, and after as well, I felt so lighthearted. It was a pleasant uplifting story. I am very grateful for this author.

I think that many people have missed the point of the story though. I don't think this was just for entertainment. I thought of it much like Aesop's fables. There was a lesson, a moral behind it. This taught a wonderful and much needed lesson. The whole time I read it I was reminded of another story with a lesson... more>> behind it. "Johnny Lingo". If you hadn't heard of it, I suggest looking it up. Even if you don't watch it but just read the short summary. A very short, but inspirational story. The point of the story: "Many things can happen to make a woman beautiful, but the thing that matters most is what she thinks of herself."

I believe the author of the story of the princess kidnapped by the demon king, had a similar purpose. One small reason I think that is the lack of names. I don't think it was laziness. That was there so you can see the meaning without getting hung up on the details. Much like many fables where they only use titles of things rather than personalized names.

This story is heartwarming, uplifting, and was an amazing start to my day. I believe my whole day will be wonderful with thos as a start. <<less

The base premise is great, the concept of "hero falls in love with the person and not the face" is one I really like, corny though it might seem and I really like that it's a straight "hero defeats bad guy and gets the princess story" instead of juggling twenty plot twists and turns like this is the friendship game or something.

But.

Spoiler

The way the princess is treated after she comes back just makes zero sense and her regaining and surpassing her previous beauty with the hero's aid kinda goes against the theme of the story.

Overall a kind of... mediocre? fluffy story?

The main couple was very cute and sweet, but that's about it.

Spoiler

It's heavily hinted that the princess was r*ped or something, but the hero didn't care about that and fell in love with her heart, not her outer appearance.

[collapse]

Everyone else (the supporting cast) were illogical and crazy.

Spoiler

The king absurdly wanted the princess back (?) and sounded like he wanted to marry her himself but I thought he was her father? And tried to break up the princess and the hero even though THEY ALREADY MARRIED?! And then turned the hero into a wanted villain just because they moved house? bonkers.

[collapse]

To be honest, I waiting for a twist the whole time. For example, what if the reason why the princess looked awful was because she was the only one who knew that the hero was actually the villain in disguise, who had killed the hero during battle and then took her back pretending to be the hero?

Or, what if the princess was actually the villain? If during the battle, the villain was defeated and the hero's punishment for the villain was to lock away their magical power, forcing them into the form of the princess? But then they slowly fell in love and the villain was redeemed...

I think any of the above plots would have been a lot more interesting than what actually happened.

Finally, there were some grammar / MTL issues with the translation ("the brave" is just shortened form of "hero", kind of weird to see ML being referred to as "hero" in one sentence, then "the brave" in the following sentence, as if they were two different people or something.) <<less

I thought this story will be another cliche but turned out it wasn't the case.

Spoiler

The princess (FL) withered after being captived by demon king for a long time. The king rewarded her to the hero because she had no value anymore after losing her beauty.

I love how ML loved FL the way she was but he also knew that FL always felt inferior with her appearance so he tried his best to restore her appearance. It's not for his own vanity, rather it was so she could regain her confidence
