Lee Eunseok became an orphan after losing his family to the ‘Gate’ incident that occurred 20 years ago. Though he dreamed of awakening as an Esper to take revenge on the monsters, he reached adulthood without awakening. Among the limited choices given to orphans, he chose to join the military.

After working diligently in the field, he was considered a promising candidate for the next team leader position in the Intelligence Command. However, during a mandatory health examination, he is identified as an S-class Guide.

“Mr. Lee Eunseok, as you have awakened as a Guide during your health examination, you will be reassigned to the Bureau of Ability Management.”

“Who decided this?”

“We are not here to ask for permission, but to inform you.”

Moreover, under the Guide Protection Act, Guides are not allowed to enter Gates. While Eunseok, who had been a field special agent, contemplates his desire to enter Gates, Choi Hanseo, an S-class Esper and guild master of White Tiger, approaches him.

“Do you have the courage to enter Gates with me?”

Eunseok begins his life as a Guide after contracting with Choi Hanseo on the condition of participating in Gate raids. However, he finds himself increasingly bothered by S-class Hunter Choi Hanseo’s subtle yet obvious advances…

“We seem to need more efficient guiding. For instance…”

Choi Hanseo trails off, raising his free hand to meaningfully brush his thumb across Eunseok’s lower lip.

WARNING: Their are disturbing scenes, the novel is not all fluffy so be careful.

If you're looking for a healthy relationship between an Esper & Guide, strong MC not just physically but mentally, greenflag ML that is an Esper, good story, good characters, incredible battle, nice translation, then this novel have it all.

Eunseok (MC) and Hanseo (ML) is one of my fav. Couple, especially their relationship. I thought Hanseo will be just the same as other Esper ML (toxic, coercive, obsessive, other gradient red traits) but I was wrong & I'm so happy. My love for Hanseo even grew more when he says to Eunseok that he can run free, because he's not their to shackle him but to protect him.

Eunseok (MC) is just born to slay (figuratively & literally), love our strong MC, the way he can keep up with other Espers, the way he use his military background in battling monsters & helping his team, his mind, his strong willed/bull headed moments, the way he reprimand Hanseo (kudos to Hanseo for listening), he's just amazing.

The story is another thing, love the world building (not sure if that's the right word), the explanation for the uniform in guiding & their loveteam name (love it), the info's, the scenes esp. Battles is so detailed you can vividly imagine them, the relationship progress of the 2 not just from Esper & Guide but more than that is perfect too. The side characters too are also good, and their relationship with Eunseok (our tsundere MC), I'd love to see this novel be adapted in manhwa, I wanna see the team fight (I'll be just like Eunseok being amaze in seeing his members power.)

📌EDIT AFTER READING UNTIL CHAPTER 129📌

I'm so freaking disappointed, I don't know why the author suddenly drop this bomb, the freaking cliche memory lost that shouldn't have happen, Hanseo could battle toe to toe with freaking S Espers & bosses and win but a freaking helicopter explosion is enough to cause him amnesia. They're just being lovey dovey and now

I am hovering at a reluctant 4 stars.

There's a lot of strangely jumbled emotions in this story—admiration and disdain, lust and shame, dominance and seduction.

I saw a few people commenting that the ML is green flag, and I was like gasp, oh you poor confused little baby ducklings.

He's not a green flag. Ever. Even the MC points out the ML is a smooth talker. But the ML's actions are all red flag, red flag to the end I tell you! Do not be confused! It's okay to read about, but... more>> do not let it normalize this behavior for you. MC never has actual power to leave the relationship and is always treated like a possession. This is what they call a golden cage!

Don't believe me?
Spoiler

MC tries to break up with ML after he stalks him to a motel. ML doesn't allow him to leave the room. MC very clearly is aware he is powerless and trapped in this situation. ML is like, "If I let you leave, I can tell it will really be over. Let's have s*x so I can ✨dickmatize✨ you." And that's what happens. NO! This is not healthy or romantic! It's r*pe, my little ducklings! If you think it isn't, I am very worried about you!

Also, if some man gets rid of your apartment and moves all your stuff to his place without even asking? 🚩 Gets jealous to the point of getting physical over you smiling at a friend? 🚩 Doesn't inform you about serious threats to your personal safety? 🚩 Ignores your requests to keep your s*x life private? 🚩 Repeatedly does things during s*x after you say no? 🚩 This isn't some Hyung taking care of his junior baby, it's red flag! 💃💃💃

[collapse]

Ahem. This is why I prefer dark romance where everybody is self-aware about just how messed up they are.

I wonder if the author saw confusion in their readers because side characters point out numerous times that MC should be wary and that ML is not a good person. Then, there's this abrupt twist near the end that is just so very Kdrama but also made me wonder if the author was tearing their hair out and screaming at their computer like, "HOW ABOUT THIS? DO YOU GET IT NOW?! HUH?! HUH?!"

Spoiler

The ML gets amnesia and forgets his relationship with the MC, but is otherwise the exact same person he was two years ago. ML then r*pes MC like it's no big deal because "that's his job as a Guide, " and MC is frozen and quiet and or**sms and then blames himself/makes excuses for it later. He has a breakdown because his rapist keeps being r*pey, goes full on wild man in the mountains to try and get his head straight, finally comes to the revelation that he needs to break up. MC shows up promising all his memories are back and things can go back to the way they were before, and then... ✨dickmatized✨

[collapse]

I think the MC at the beginning would have absolutely run from this relationship if this is how they really started off. Tbh, this is a good example of how people end up in abusive relationships. You say, "No, they weren't in their right mind, " or "I don't understand how this could happen. Can I do something to stop it from happening again so things can go back to how they were?"

There's this whole thing about shock and denial and the weird things people will do for delusions of control. In reality, they are seeing the true self that their partner has been hiding. MC's fear of abandonment, loneliness, and memory of deep love make him accept the unacceptable. And everybody waving green flags—you're vulnerable to this, too. Listen to grandma, okay?!

Anyway, that was some long ranty PSA, huh?

I did really enjoy the action and getting to see inside gates. It made it feel like a video game. The strongest part of this story to me was the action and espionage stuff. I do have some nitpicks about gun stuff and magic gemstone registration processes (there isn't one? What? Why? How? SK would TOTALLY be on top of identifying, grading, and tracing magic stones—people could probably purchase couple stones with a special gold-embossed certificate tracing it to the specific gate, time obtained, type and rank of monster it generated from, which Hunter recovered it, the color gradiant, the hardness, etc etc etc—stones obtained by celebraty hunters would sell at international auctions for billions, BILLIONS I tell you!), but I think most readers won't notice or care about the things I did.

There were some decently developed side characters, and I would have loved to see even more of the team fleshed out.

The ending... well, I'm glad it was rushed because the whole time I was making faces like 🫠🫩😮‍💨😬😒🫤 <<less

Summary so far:

Spoiler

MC (who's trained as a special agent in the military) awakens as a guide.

He's pretty unhappy about that because he's an adrenaline junkie and doesn't wanna sit back and guide espers all day.

Eventually ML scouts him because of his strength (both from his military training and because he's S class) and he joins ML's guild since he would be allowed to enter gates.

MC adapts to life in the guild, guides some espers, goes into his first gate, and gets pursued by ML

[collapse]

I feel like it's been quite boring... since MC is the strong-from-the-start type, he takes all that's happened to him pretty calmly, which is good for him but not that interesting to read about.

Also I'm not that invested in the relationship between MC and ML.

Spoiler

The logic as stated by the ML, he's a strong S class hunter and MC is a strong S class guide so it's natural for them to get together, similar to how guys will naturally pursue beautiful women.

But I feel like their strength is the only reason they are interested in each other, imo there's not a lot of chemistry between them.

Currently reading day 3

Actually, this novel is quite good, action neatly written n easily imaginable, blooming romance quite good, but if u r searching for a fluffy one with deep feelings exploration, this one, imho, is kinda far from it. It's like romance with stronger advantage to gain-vibe rather than deep chemistry for most part.

Fast pace with lots of spices here n there, chemistry with side characters built nicely, actually kinda hv a balance showtime like the MC ML.

MC is strong, a badass, hs brain, muscle, n hs strong principles... more>> n high morality.

ML is just too OP but his personality is easily likeable despite the way MC often portraying him 😂.

At some point, it's kinda exhausting to see MC being reckless that cost him n other's well being 😂.

But, other nice things in this novel world building surrounding our MC ML, are: that we actually get the green-green couple with a quite healthy communication! We get consent (with a slight manipulation) !! A guideverse that actually talk abt guideverse, not just highlighting n focusing more upfront on the animalistic s*xual act most guideverse in BL always show!! A shacklesless relationship between MC ML! It's refreshing!

The world building pace is great, explanation abt the the world mechanisms is quite good, n I think it's easy to understand for ppl who isn't familiar with whole guideverse or sentinelverse.

If only author also incorporates deep feeling exploration to build n form the chemistry or bond between MC ML, then the feeling n connection I get from reading this novel wouldn't be too bland.

I get it since it's from the POV of a straight man falling into the world of guideverse mechanism with military background, terrible past, logic-driven attitudes, finding home from another man seemingly seen as inhumane, has to surrender his body n agency in the name of 'helping the world' against his dream, n became 'asset', but, I guess it wouldn't hurt n would b even greater, to have a nice relationship n connection to b explored deeply, to make reader easily more attached n invested in our MC ML life.

I'll try to update the review once I finished this gem. Curious abt the spoiler mentioned in other review 😌

does little, imho, to uplift the already great story.

I think this was a plot device to dig deeper into the emotional side of our MC, yes, it did good, but, still, honestly, #that# kinda unnecessary.

BUT, the conclusion is quite satisfying! The side story too, tho I personally think that there r lots that still need to b resolved n unpacked, especially regarding #that# arc.

Regardless, this one is a great reading experience!! <<less

I loved this so much I don’t think I’ll ever find another guidverse like this. The main character is independent and strong. The male lead is OP. I love every quality the main character has. But I wish the story had put more focus on the male lead’s life you know, because he is a second main character. But otherwise if you’re looking for the perfect balance between action and romance here you go!!

This was so good. It is action packed and moved at such a fast pace that I finished it in a few days. It’s violent, gory, dark af, but also has flirting, romance, lots of spice, friendships, team building, and all the elements that make a good guideverse novel. The author excels at writing action scenes. The plot was pretty simple, and the ending could have been a side story, but I still enjoyed the story immensely because I really liked the couple’s interactions.

The MC kicked ass and I LOVED... more>> that. He doesn’t always make the right decision, but he’s also not the type to freak out, have meltdowns, or run away from his problems. As someone who could have been leader of a special forces unit, he spent so much of his life training to be an elite soldier, so I understand his frustration of ending up as a Guide that Espers want to overprotect and keep sheltered.

Surprisingly, the ML is a green flag. He tosses the smoothest lines that make you want to scream, romances the MC, asks for consent, and most importantly, he trusts the MC. There are many instances where the ML doesn’t feel comfortable letting the MC go into risky situations, but he trusts Eunseok, doesn’t baby him and isn’t overprotective. There’s a scene in the book that absolutely had me swooning for the ML. I won’t spoil it, but he never blames Eunseok when things go wrong. They’re such a level-headed couple. I love that there aren’t any misunderstandings between them. <<less

It was a good read to waste time. Don't expect too much tho (not too good not too bad).

At some point it got so boring I had to take a break from it to read something else.

One thing I particularly HATED was the cliche memory loss arc. I swear to God the author just decided to drop an unnecessary bomb for no reason. Like my mans ML can beat up two other S ranks but this is what defeat him? Another thing that I absolutely hated was how he assaulted MC by initiating penetration. Like bruh, why? It just reminded me of that other S rank that kidnapped and sexually assaulted him

[collapse]

Other than this it's a decent read? (I think...) Wouldn't re-read it tho...

Anyways bye and thanks author for your work! <<less

The story is fairly simple, but very enjoyable. The MC is strong, a former soldier who wants to fight and always be on the front line; his character could have been developed better. The ML is a green flag only with him—even though his personality is that of a "monster, " he tries to hold back (though he doesn't always succeed) with the MC and to let him do whatever he wants, despite the fact that he is often in danger.

I didn't particularly like the final part, but I... more>> understand that the author used this device to explore the MC's feelings and his relationship with the ML. Overall, it was a pleasant read.

This is my first time posting a review, but I feel like this novel deserved one. I really enjoyed this story, and I understand others might not, but I still did :). It was refreshing to see how empowered and mature the MC was in this story. MC knew his abilities and was rational enough to assess how capable he was in a new environment, both characteristically and politically. He’s so badass! Despite that, MC did make misjudgments on some occasions (like his literal safety and the ppl around him... more>> smh) but unfortunately people aren’t perfect. There were moments where MC and ML relationship was questionable and unfortunate (ranged from sus to crazy on many occasions). Regardless, I love this MC with my WHOLE HEART. He’s the goat LMAO. Also, so much thanks and appreciation to the Translator for translating this novel. They did a wonderful job! <<less
