She was nothing more than a weed in the chaotic world, a petty thief who would stop at nothing to survive.

One day, she stole ten taels of silver from a young master, not realizing he was the infamous traitorous general, his hands stained with the blood of his own people.

Her desperate antics to survive piqued his interest. He lit an incense stick and turned her into a plaything in a deadly game of survival.

“I’ll give you one incense stick’s time to run. Don’t let me catch you, or else—

You’ll face eternal damnation.”

She fled to a noble family, took on a new identity, and married into safety, believing she could finally live a peaceful life. But when she looked up, she found him smiling at her, calling her “sister-in-law” in a tone both gentle and menacing.

She lost the game and became his s*ave.

True to his word, he cast her into fire and sword, dragging her through hell. Yet she discovered that under his relentless tempering, she emerged with an unbreakable armor, capable of standing tall in the chaotic times with nothing but her own backbone as a woman.

He was like a boat ferrying her across the river, only to vanish into the darkness after one journey. Who was he, really?

The road forward is long, and the way back is distant. Both are lost souls—why not cross the river together?

This is one grounded c-novel that I haven’t encountered in a long while. There’s no rebirths, no special powers, no unshakeable positions/identities that are spared from misery.

The story is set in a very chaotic time: a crumbling dynasty where anyone can be crushed like an ant and the tides keep turning mercilessly.

The characters, the setting, how the plot unfolds, and the little twists in-between are all very engaging. This is something that can easily be adapted as a drama as is. It is both a story of tragedy and resilience,... more>> of heroism and of sacrifices.

My minor complaint is how modern some of the mindsets are (considering it is a historical novel) or maybe it’s just the translation? The novel also glossed over how a beggar/thief can adapt so fast to the requirements of polite society.

Also, I think there’s only 149 chapters in total (145 + epilogue + 3 extra chapters), 147 of which are available in English. The remaining two are slightly bittersweet, maybe that’s why it wasn’t translated.

Spoiler

Chapter 148 is about Song Muchuan, 149 about Xu Kouyue. The ending reminds me a bit of Hunger Games, how people are inevitably changed by war.

This is objectively a 4.5 for me, it just falls short from becoming a personal favorite. But the story (and its characters) will stay with me for a while.

My rating system:

1 star - AVOID at all cost, can be well-written but with very problematic plots or characters

2 stars - SUBPAR, no point in reading

3 stars - AVERAGE, have seen such stories before, read if you have nothing else to read

4 stars - GOOD to REALLY GOOD, easy to recommend to others who like the same genre

5 stars - probably imperfect but MY PERSONAL FAVORITES; those that I will gladly read again from time to time <<less

An Unexpected Epic That Starts with a Whimper and Ends with Thunder

At first glance, this novel seems small, almost trivial. It opens on the struggles of a seemingly inconsequential character dealing with mundane, almost petty concerns: survival, food, shelter, social slights.

But if you stick with it, the story quietly transforms. What begins as one person's private, low-stakes battle gradually unfurls into a sweeping tale of national fate. The character's path- which once revolved around the smallest necessities- slowly ascends into a crucible of strategy, sacrifice, and statecraft. The stakes grow... more>> without you even noticing until you're knee-deep in wartime councils, political betrayals, the raw weight of patriotism and martyrdom.

What starts as a narrow, almost claustrophobic view of existence slowly unfurls into something far larger. The author masterfully uses this modest beginning as a foundation to build toward a sweeping saga. With each chapter, the story expands; first to a city, then a kingdom, and eventually the soul of a nation. <<less

I have only one question.... why ?? Whyyy did you forget to put genre "tragedy"???

I hoped it would be easy read with a little bit of intrigue... but that... that completely different... usually I avoid such a waterfall of tears...

Anyway, on my opinion, this is a big pearl. Definitely in my top 5 of best read novels.

I read it until deep into the night, and it’s absolute roller coaster until the last chapter

Spoiler

but it’s still HE

Beautiful, candidate for my best novel of 2025. The current rating of 3, 75 is low, considering the real quality of the novel. The plot is well thought, every single character counts and serves a purpose in the plot.

The lines in italic are direct quotes from the novel.

The MC is a poor girl, without family, who lives by stealing in a country recently invaded. One day she steals a purse. Little did she know, this marked the beginning of all her misfortunes.

She is thrown in the middle of intrigues,... more>> risky missions, a deadly war between the Qi invaders and her country.

He had once mistakenly thought of her as a tiny moth drawn to the flame. Only later did he realize—she was the light itself.

The ML is such a complex and contradictory character. He chooses to play the most dangerous role in a war: apparently a traitor of his country, in reality a secret double agent, risking his life every day. Having chosen this path, he accepts to be hated and despised by anyone, forced to make impossible decisions, he knows he can't show weaknesses or indecision. Yet, he is still human and sometimes his cold mask slips, revealing his true feelings of loneliness and desire to have someone who understands him.

At the beginning he is very harsh with the MC, he is envious of her innocence and pushes her to her

limits but she manages to surprises him at every turn. In the end the MC admits "I'm just thinking... how can I tell the world that every ounce of my courage and strength was his gift to me."

Prepare tissue for the last fifteen chapters.

"Do you know how to row? Will you ferry me across?" - Perfect ending

I think the core of the novel is expressed in this simple sentence: "This character is the most complex. I thought life must be much more difficult than death, so it should be this one."

Just one small mean comment: the writing style during the passionate scenes is a bit too dramatic and exaggerated

I hope to read more novels from this author. <<less

Wow, an amazing read. I really like this novel. And, no wonder it's getting a drama adaptation. I'm looking forward to that too.

Both the MC and ML go through so much, especially the MC. She is such an inspiring character. Strong, grounded, and incredibly resilient. Her loyalty to the ML is on another level. Not a single moment of this novel bored me, yet it never felt overly dramatic either. The story flows beautifully with a perfect balance. I just love it.

Highly recommended. Also, don't miss the extra chapter. IYKYK... more>> ;) <<less

complex characters all throughout, and the plot was intricate with minor plot holes. The author is great at making you feel for the characters, even minor ones. Personally I would've loved more of the main characters' story in the extras. I think it ended a bit abruptly and some parts could've had a more detailed narrative. I do agree with another reviewer that the writing was a bit exaggerated and dramatic at certain times.

The translator missed three chapters of extras btw. Details like character names and places were sometimes translated... more>> inaccurately; one character had 3 names, FL had her name translated to literally South Clothes. However, the translation did get the overall feeling and tone across, so kudos where due.

A solid novel throughout and definitely worth a read. <<less

Very engaging novel. You'll be s**ked Into it from the very first chapter. My only grievance is no tragedy tag was mentioned. I loved the female character, her resilience, street smart, and straightforward character. A no nonsense person and she refused to give up on the main lead. At times I felt she should just walk away but she was full of empathy. Loved all the other characters, the author has built the characters well. And boss zhang, and sixth sister, my heart ached for them in the end. One... more>> of the most heart wrenching novel with a happy ending. Would've loved to read more extras though. A must read, but not for those who love fluffy light and easy going novels. <<less
