Song Fuzhi is a teacher, a man in his early thirties who is calm and handsome, but students avoid him.

No one would guess that the strict Mr. Song is actually a fan of the second dimension. He watches anime, follows manga, and especially adores a senior cosplayer named Octopus.

Octopus, with his imposing aura, is hailed as the master of attack in the cosplay community.

What Song Fuzhi loves most about him is precisely this aspect.

However, to Song’s dismay, Octopus announces his retirement from the cosplay community to return to real life.

Song looks at the ring on his finger in silence. Marriage has forced him to hide his peculiar interests, and Octopus’s retirement adds to the desolation of his spiritual life.

Shi Zhang and Song Fuzhi get married through a blind date. Family and colleagues all say they are a perfect match. The botanist is gentle and refined, the math teacher is handsome, and together they make a pleasing picture.

But only Shi Zhang knows that during his youth, he harbored inappropriate desires for Song Fuzhi. In this seemingly ordinary marriage, he must force himself to restrain those dark instincts.

Later, the tranquil life of mutual respect in their marriage is shattered.

Shi Zhang discovers that the locked cabinet in their home is filled with cosplay photo albums spanning from Octopus’s debut to his retirement.

Song Fuzhi finds out that his seemingly gentle husband, on one night, suddenly becomes fierce and passionate, awakening countless dreams about Octopus.

Subsequently, Octopus makes a comeback with a mature and aloof companion.

Fans: Is this Octopus’s new buddy? So handsome!
Shi Zhang: This is my husband.

The story is quite good but I want to warn readers that past ch 30 the translation offered by Shanghai Fantasy is not free (this came as quite a surprise to me). You will need to purchase credits on the site to unlock the chapters.

Also, there were chapters where quality wasn't so good and where you could feel the MTL (mostly genders being switched, MC is often "she"). It is still legible though just a tad annoying

It is one of those stories that make you feel warm inside for a long time after you finish reading it. The MC and ML are reaching middle age, but their hearts are youthful and energetic. In a world that always emphasized that your life ends after you are thirty, we never really get to see what happens to people who go above that age.

Often, we think "is it too late to start learning how to sing?". We consider our age before picking up hobbies. Before I came across this... more>> story, I, too, had been wondering if I was getting too old to keep up with my hobbies and pick up new ones.

Growing old feels so scary, especially since society has this weird expectation of you to stop living for yourself and start living for others.

I love this story because it resonates so much with me. Fanfictions, anime and the 2D world is one where the young people thrive. But what happens to those who grew up already? Are we supposed to give up on this joyful world and face the "real life", with nothing to look back to, just because we passed a certain age?

Do we stop being protagonists of our stories and become the side characters for another, just because we passed the age that could be considered young?

The MC is 34. The ML is two years older. They were unmarried and never dated before they met each other. Their past is intertwined in a way that makes sense and makes you feel "they influenced each other, but there were too many times they could've missed each other". It's not that they were attracted to each other or fell in love at first sight (though you could say it's true for the ML), they gradually learnt to love and understand each other, and supported each other.

This love story is mature. There is plenty of communication. I love the author who wrote this. In a world that's full of cold dominating (and very forceful and disrespectful) robotic CEOs, the ML is like a human with flesh and blood. He has emotions. He has character development. He tried hard to make himself a better person and he knew that
Spoiler

his actions back in high school when he was obsessed with the MC were wrong and horrific. You'd think he's a red flag because of the summary and then you'd read the story and realise he's the biggest green flag ever. Get me a man like Shi Zhang TvT. Also, at no point are his actions of secretly collecting the notebooks MC throws away or following MC home (even if he does nothing else) normalised or considered anything but horrific. Even after being a "bad" person, he still realises stalking is wrong, feels guilty, and goes far away to get over it. He tries to become a better person, not for anybody else, but for himself. And I love him so much for that. His childhood and experiences would make readers excuse his behaviour even if he kept it up, but he decides that he's the only one who can correct his life. He proved that becoming an evil person is a choice, you cannot blame your surroundings or your past for the kind of person you are. He's one of my favourite MLs in the entire list of MLs from the BLs I've read (and I've read wayyy too many tbh)

[collapse]

The MC, he's a darling. Perfect husband. I love how this story treated the MC and ML as partners of equal standings. MC is not feminised. He's not considered a "wife", but a husband. It seems like it should be common sense, but unfortunately, it's something very uncommon in BL.

The ML is like an onion with different layers and the ML is the person peeling that onion to see the full picture (and he cries every time he peels away a new layer). Their relationship is so warm but passionate, healing and supportive. A few adjectives cannot completely define how precious their relationship is.

The MC and ML's friends are also very well fleshed out. There's no actual villain, it's a story about growth and accepting that you're getting old, and also the fact that getting old doesn't mean you have to stop living for yourself. The writing style is mature and heartwarming.

The translation by shanghaiFantasy was somewhat weird, with pronouns and names often mixed up. There are also no translated extras so I gotta forage in the wild for that (not that I'm complaining). I'm thankful for the complete translations though. Even though they felt very MTLy, it doesn't change the fact that the reading experience wasn't bad (even if it wasn't great, considering the confusion brought by turning he into her etc)

I'd give the translation 7/10 for the lack of proofreading. But don't worry, the plot is 10/10, interactions are 12/10, characters are 15/10, romance is 1000000/10. So it works out in the end. <<less

Ahhh a really sweet and complete love story but beyond that, I really enjoyed the themes of interests and passion and how you're never too old to enjoy and seek your own interests.

The romance is a slow and steady build. It's technically one of those first marriage, then love. In the beginning, there's a lot of distance and politeness, at least for our MC, you can tell he views it as almost businesslike rather than emotional. But as they both open up to each other, there's so much dog food... more>> but I like that the romance always keeps developing and never stagnates.

At first I thought MC was too cold but I like how he's very clear cut. Actually, you can tell he's actually very dedicated, he devotes himself to his students and later on, ML. He just kind of has a complex about being boring and never having the courage to explore his interests which is where ML comes in.

ML is basically hhh a very possessive individual with intense obsessions. When it relates to like plants or cosplay, that's fine but then it falls on MC lol. To his credit, he knows it's alot and he tries really hard to be more normal and when he does indulge it's when they're in a loving committed relationship. Plus MC is very into the wolfish type you can tell lol.

This does have one of my favourite dynamics of one part obsessive dude x loving partner who tolerates and might be into it. They're so good for each other though and it's very adult in that they talk alot and discuss without jumping to conclusions.

Other than the romance, there's a lot of focus on school life and cosplay. The novel is very sincere about it's themes on youth and being yourself. Just because you're an adult doesn't mean you can't enjoy your hobbies, and you'll even find many people who also enjoy the same hobbies.

Anyways, a fun and bingeable read. The alternate story is also very sweet and a cherry on top <<less

HHHHH THIS IS SUCH A SATISFYING READ.

I LOVE THIS BOOK

I thought it would be a kind of red flag ML because of the synopsis. I'm glad I decided to read it. He is such a green flag ML 😭💚

... more>> The relationship between the two of them is so sweet. It is truly a mature adults with great communication. No misunderstanding, great interaction, with respect for each other!!! Healthy relationship!!! Very fluffy!!!

And it's such an interesting topic too. It's about cosplays. Truly made me respect them more. And the way they balance their work, life, and hobbies is great. Other side characters are great too (even though Shi Zhang's father is annoying, he played a great role) !

The ending truly reveals all the things mentioned in the earlier chapters, those foreshadowing. Very satisfying read.

10/10 would recommend.

Spoiler

This book is meaty too. Damn I love how Shi Zhang's pe*verted head works lmao. The first time they did it, he made Song Fuzhi held the flowers the gifted while driving. Then made plant specimens out of it 😭 he even hangs it right in the middle of his collection. I get second-hand embarrassment while reading how Song Fuzhi discovered it.

Such a simp. I mean, Song Fuzhi is really great I wouldn't blame Shi Zhang for falling in love with him for 20 years.

This is quite underrated, but I wonder if it's because it's for more mature audiences? I'd say that this is josei if it were Japanese. Feels more like a slice-of-life than a romance, but it had its hype moments. I enjoyed reading it despite it being not my type.

The romance is sweet and a slow burn. The ML isn't perfect, but everything inappropriate he did was done years ago when he was a teen (and he matured out of it). I really appreciate how he grew to become the sweet,... more>> gentle (yet still being possessive XD) guy the MC fell in love with. Bro went from a red flag (with godly self-control :P) to like the greenest of flags.

I appreciate how the MC and ML both receive character development and lift each other up. The MC's the stoic type and seeing him learn to live a little more was heartwarming. The MC's parents are also sweet.

The translations are likely MTL since the MC's pronouns were wrong a couple times :/ but overall it was still readable. <<less

Argh, I've read way too many danmei, I actually thought I hadn't read this one! So the main reason I forgot that I read this, is because part of the way through reading it, I put it on reading hiatus. The reason: I happened to see a comment on jjwxc where the reader said they saw another novel with plot that is very similar (to the point where this novel feels like it's somewhat plagiarized). And the author supposedly had deleted the first comment that reader has tried to post... more>> (making the author seem like the guilty party). Which upset me, and I felt like I should put reading this book on hold until I could take a look at the other novel. But I didn't get around to checking and was distracted by other stuff. I looked the other book up just now and realized that this novel was first serialized several months earlier, so it seems as though the other author was the one who probably plagiarized (in case you're interested, it called 假清冷和伪禁欲闪婚后 by 夂槿, also on jjwxc but not on NU).

From what I can recall, this novel is really hilarious (just like its prequel). It's about romance between two otakus who love BL, cosplay, that sort of thing but there's some misunderstandings at first before they realize they have common interests (similar to the prequel). I absolutely love this setting because I finally feel like I have something in common with main characters in danmei, who are normally depicted as perfect in most every way without any flaws or "strange" hobbies... in short, it's actually quite difficult for me as a very flawed person with eccentric hobbies to empathize with them. Which is why this type of novel stands out. This installation of the series has otakus in a school setting, which is quite fun. One of my fave BL novel tropes is the blind date scenario, and this one didn't fail to deliver at all.

I will come back to revise this review after I finish it! Although, I'm going to MTL myself as I did previously because the MTL editor/translator of this is doing some poorly edited MTL with incorrect pronouns.

On a more serious note:

There's supposed to be censored and uncensored versions of this (jjwxc should have the censored version). A reader commented on jjwxc saying that we should be sure not to miss the uncensored version! Although, tbh I don't know exactly how to get a hold of the uncensored copy myself *sheds crocodile tears*. <<less

Such a satisfying read! They are so cute, I loved seeing everyone's discovery during the birthday surprise.

A little novel that is really quick to read but is really cute.

I highly recommend

Ps:

All chapters are translated (In some chapters the pronouns are not there but the right ones are readable). The chapters are free as the novel was finished in May

I'm quite shy writing a review for this considering the lack of them but I just have to express my love for this book.

This novel is simply amazing. These characters had me going through various emotions, I love them very much. The MC and ML are very similar, parallel versions of each other. Lines moving in the same direction, and then they intersect into one. Their lives are so interconnected, their interests mirrored. Life would be odd if one were to exist without the other. I am so happy they... more>> met, they make each other so happy and comfort each other so well in their long term struggles. As for the parallels I mentioned I mean how they both find aspects of themselves dirty or just wrong, like the mls view on his family life and his emotions and the MCs fondness towards 2d things. Also how they collected plants to commemorate and cherish memories. There is also how they appear, MC can be strict and seemingly cold or standoffish on the surface but really hes pretty gentle, really funny, and kind. As for the ML he seems scholarly and gentle yet inside he feels these very strong emotions.. These two are very similar and they are able to overcome things because of each other's love, encouragement, and reassurance it is so beautiful.

I also appreciate the authors ability to write and flesh out things, especially the parents. How they're good people but they failed to nurture and be familiar with the MC as a kid due to how busy they are and then regret of it in the future when he's an adult and they're retired. The MC is very mature and understands his parents as an adult I find it admirable.

There are obviously some things to note, like the migraine that was described as a long term incurable illness. Or the authors quality of translation, which is not that bad just mistakes you can skim it is very easy to read (I mean it, I managed to read this in just a few days. Though this book has multi chapters it is so easy to read, which is def saying smthing frm me.) But overall this novel is so comforting. Their love made me think it is so wonderful to experience something so beautiful. The events had my heart beating actually, even the themes of neglect from both their childhoods had me shedding tears. I am happy they found peace in each other. So beautiful. They really just brought each other to life. Living and being alive is so different and I believe they show that very well

P.S. I am absolutely distraught that the extras arent translated... I usually get bored in the middle of books and tend to drop them unintentionally but I crave for the extras of these.

This setting is usually not my taste but as you can tell I enjoyed it. I recommend this book and think you should give it a try :)

Bless the author and translator for writing this,

Not a spoiler I just yap too much 😑

Spoiler

More yammering but I'd also like to mention how I appreciate the MC. He's so realistic and mature, I appreciate how he viewed the cosplayer side of the ML as like someone 2d. No parasocial feelings, he appreciated his work but wasn't jumping at the seems to meet him. I found that detail so refreshing. Also the ml, he was possessive but he wasnt overbearing really. Yes yes theres vinegar but he definitely has the MCs best interest in mind and would never wish to make him uncomfortable and honestly the MC doesnt mind it at all lol

A good story weighed down by the carelessly edited MTL. Wrong pronouns, mixed up speakers, some segments duplicated/missing while some misplaced, etc etc.

As for the romance, it was pretty good. Both were mature and changed each other's lives for the better. The way they handled things made it so that potential issues never escalated or blew up out of proportion. ML, in particular, changed his old ways even before meeting MC because he was aware of his own issues. MC was also specially understanding and patient. It was quite the... more>> ideal relationship and, as always with these stories, looks contributed a lot to it, but readers can also see the work they put into it. Things didn't just happen magically. <<less
