At the Wedge Tower, where any and all magical knowledge is gathered, the mages of the Empire collaborate and compete, and once every three years, they recruit new apprentice mages.

“I want to fly.”—Tia, a young girl who aspires to be a mage for that reason alone, challenges the Wedge Tower’s entrance examination.

This is a story of mages, and of monsters on the brink of extinction.

Lovely read. The writing can be clumsy at times, but the characters have depth and it explores a lot of interpersonal situations where someone isn't "wrong", just having a different opinion. Tia struggles hard and tries her best to understand her emotions and relationships with others.

The book uses characters with a variety of backgrounds to explores lots of complex themes like living with disablility, feelings of inferiority, overprotecting someone vs letting them make their own choices, etc. It can toe the line of preachy but part of that is Tia... more>> being so emotionally young that they need to explain things to her (instead of leaving it implied). <<less
