“Ah Zan, I am Ran Ran.”

No person is an isolated island, except for you.

That day, he looked outside the window and saw a white olive tree in the open field.

***

Reporter Song is quite different from her appearance.

Reporter Song works very diligently.

Reporter Song is a bit cute.

Today I saw white olive trees with reporter Song. It was very special.

My New Year’s wish is to to marry her.

——Li Zan

Ah Zan, you need to pay attention to your safety.

Ah Zan, I like the scenery that has you in it

Ah Zan, don’t be afraid. I will take you home.

Ah Zan, you are the best person I have ever met.

Ah Zan, you have worked hard.

——Song Ran

“Ah Zan, I want to be a bird in my next life.”

“Then I will be a big tree.”

After witnessing the deepest darkness, the most ferocious evil, and the ugliest horror, I am nonetheless grateful to have seen the light, the kindness, and the most beautiful of souls.

I am nonetheless thankful to have seen that grove of white olive trees with my own eyes.

I knew it was a mirage; the intersection of where the sky and the ground meet in the desert.

And you were always by my side; the brightest light in the dark boundless night.

Wow I’ll have to say this is my favorite out of all her novels. Epilogue was sad but so true. Soldier who survived a war are left with so much trauma and not enough recognition and support as soldiers who past during war.

this novel was a beautiful read. The story itself is ordinary, about two people who to meet and fall in love in a war torn country. If you compare them to other novel protagonists, you might find them ordinary, because they are just ordinary humans who happened to have different jobs. Even the author had mentioned a few times, that this was a story about ordinary people.

but the story s**ked me right in. The author spared no details to show the effects war have on ordinary people. These two saw... more>> the worst the humanity can offer but still came out of it alive, especially li zan.

Spoiler

I cant imagine the torture li zan had to go through, it was too much for me that I glossed over that part. Honestly his situation reminded me of peeta after being tortured by the capitol in the hunger games. There were parallels between the effects torture had on the both of them. I wish it ended on a happier note but this was a realistic story. Even if I saw the ending from miles away, it was still heartbreaking to read. After 10 years of battling with his demon, li zan pulled the triggers. And song ran had never ever blamed him for anything, because she know how hard he fought to stay by her side in those years. And she know, he was only staying in this world for her. Because she was the only tether her had to the outside world. He wasn't the only one who was dependent on her, she too was very dependent on him, if not more. They were only able to survive for so long because they had each other. And after he died, she just cant wait to go back to him, to go back to that white olive tree

and the white olive tree, that used to mean something beautiful, has became a source of nightmare for him for years. Just thinking about it made me cry again

.

i'd like to add that this novel gets quite dark and if you think that you can get emotional easily, i'd recommend you not to pick it up. I am also someone who gets emotional easily reading stories, and I went into this not knowing it gets dark. I'm still having trouble getting out of my headspace after reading this book, even after a few days. This even led me to be in a depressive episode. So trigger warning i'd guess: pstd, depression, su*cide, torture, war. Some of the scenes could be too much for some people. <<less

This is the first ever time I have ever posted a review, but this novel honestly deserves this.

It talks about the male lead being a soldier whose main job is to dispose of bombs, and he meets the female lead through a bomb while she was reporting at a war-zone. The two go through a series of events throughout the story as they live with the trauma of wartime.

The story shows the horrors and atrocities of war, as well as the hope and perseverance the characters and the extras in... more>> the story face, and about how they never gave up.

It also talks about the aftereffects of war, and how the people at the frontlines suffer afterwards,

with the male lead having PTSD, and the female lead with severe depression. Not to mention the many friends and comrades they lost throughout the story.

This story is a tearjerker, but also gives you the same sense of perspective that one should have about what war truly does to people. Honestly, the best I could say it is inspiring.

The best part of this novel, is that the male lead and the female lead are actual people who the author wrote about. The story isn't just a fictional romance novel, but an autobiography dedicated to these two people.

Spoiler

Unfortunately, both have already passed away, but through ways that show they were truly heroes in their own right.

This is a favorite that will have a special place in my heart. So, dont be discouraged when I say that the story is tragic. Read it. This is a great story, and they do have a happy ending.

"Such a strong sunshine, such a depressing and dull city, his smile is the only color in the black and white world"

If you're looking for teeth shattering sweetness, this is not for you. This story is very dark. It showed the darkest and ugliest parts of war. I cant remember how many... more>> times they made me stop and contemplate esp when Li Zan ask, "what profession in this world can prevent war, ?"....

I have mixed emotions when they danced under the moonlight, though both don't know how, with the ruined walls full of bullet holes and soot as their witness. <<less
