That night felt unusually long.

One of the reasons was the strange man who showed up at Yigyeom’s house.

“Who… are you? You don’t seem like someone who lives here. I’m calling the police.”

Yigyeom stepped back, but Dohyun closed the distance just as quickly.

“I thought this earlier too—you’ve got good instincts. You’re still dreaming, but with that level of awareness, you could become quite the talent.”

Dohyun checked his watch and gave a chilling smile.

“Well, whatever. After dying a few more times, you’ll fully wake up.”

“…Die? Me?”

“Yeah. Living in a dream you might never wake up from—that’s frustrating, isn’t it? Don’t worry. I’ll wake you up soon.”

“What the hell are you—”

Red blood spread across the floor. It was the beginning of a night with no end in sight.

THE CHAPTERS TITLED "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 3" ARE COMPLETELY OUT OF ORDER.

Putting the above warning at the start of my review so people aren't incredibly confused like I was. I'm not even sure of their proper place currently but if I remember, I'll edit this with where to read them. They seem to be the only ones out of order.

Actual Review:

This story offers a lot of refreshing and unique twists on a genre that is growing somewhat stale—it offers a new interpretation of the 'hunterverse' (likely inspired by magical... more>> girl tropes). People are unaware of monsters and hunters and cannot see the battles that take place with them in front of their eyes. The MC awakens as a hunter and is rudely killed by the ML to induce his first awakening, which while the ML explains as a benefit, is obviously incredibly aggravating and traumatizing for the MC. The MC also possesses the unique trait to remember events rewound by the ML (hence why the ML goes around killing people then rewinding time to force their awakenings). This scenario and premise offers a lot of intrigue, unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be a priority for the story to explore this.
Spoiler

There are some hints that the MC and ML may be the only 'real' people. The MC might be dreaming everything. The timeline ramifications. The nature of the ML's power impact on the world. Etc Etc (there are a lot of small nuggets of suggestion regarding the importance of the ML's power).

[collapse]
In fact, one character is deeply interested in exploring it but the MC immediately shuts down the notion.

Unique twists on the hunterverse genre aside, I think there are clear areas where the characterization and plot is lacking. It covers deeply traumatizing and interesting topics, but refuses to take them seriously—or itself. The story constantly has a comedic flare to it, with nearly every character feeling like the forced comedic side character in a K-Drama. Yet, it constantly attempts to be serious at the same time.

It feels like the author is scared to create serious conflict between the MC and ML so conflict is created but then is conveniently resolved quickly or somehow doesn't have an impactful plot presence. The most glaring being the trauma and anger the MC faces over being killed by the ML. Even though this is clearly stated repeatedly as a conflict point, the conflict never actually has much of a presence. It quickly is just forgotten by the MC as they grow closer through fighting together.

In some ways, I do feel I am being too critical of this novel but it also comes from a place of me really rooting for it to be better while reading it. It has so much potential but seems to squander that potential to be more and pursue a mediocre trope-filled BL plot instead. However, it still has a lot of charm to it and the MC has a strong sense of autonomy, presence, and likeability so I will definitely continue reading this. <<less
