In the thirtieth year, on a moonlit night, with the landscape adorned in splendor and the lotus pond full beneath the glowing moon. Princess Li Ying of Yong’an, gentle and kind-hearted, tragically drowned in the palace lotus pond at the age of sixteen. The Emperor, in his deep sorrow, nearly lost the will to live. Upon closer investigation, it was discovered that the princess had been pushed into the pond and drowned by her fiancé. In his rage, the Emperor executed the entire family of the fiancé, a noble family of high standing. This event severely weakened the power of the aristocratic families, while the commoners began to rise in power, leading to the commencement of the Taichang Reforms.

After the Emperor’s passing, history books later referred to him as the “Saint Ruler of the Renaissance” due to the Taichang Reforms. The mother of Li Ying, Consort Jiang, who had once been a palace maid, ascended to the position of Imperial Concubine, and eventually Empress, and later even crowned herself Emperor, alongside the Taichang Emperor, as two Saints. Everything they achieved was rooted in the early death of their beloved daughter, Li Ying.

Thirty years later, during a prosperous and peaceful era, while the people mourned the untimely death of the princess, they also found solace in the fact that her death had brought about so many changes. However, the soul of the young princess, still lingering in the mortal realm, appeared wearing the green silk gown she had worn when she drowned. Her face, preserved at the age of sixteen, with its delicate beauty, found the infamous and ruthless Minister of Affairs, Cui Xun, who was plagued by countless illnesses. She said to him, “I need your help to investigate a case.”

She continued, “I want you to find out who killed me.”

Evil spirits turn to demons, and if one has already become a demon, why bother with becoming a Buddha?

Best novel I've read till now, obviously other readers can have different views. The unconditional love between ML and FL is something I can't express in words. At times you will happy, at times you will feel sad and might even have heartbreak but love triumphs over everything. Just read it guys... you won't regret it.

The extra chapters make up for every bit of sadness that you felt while reading the main story....I was not able to stop myself from re-reading extras again and again....

The author really really did a... more>> fantastic job here ! <<less

Let me hype myself up first because I finally finished a historical-fantasy xuanhuan novel. This is literally my first completed a ghost novel. I used to avoid this genre completely, but somehow the synopsis pulled me in. And yep I did it.

Huge appreciation to the author for writing something so angsty and emotional. I kept telling myself I wouldn't cry, but look at me—crying. Thank you for giving me such soft-spoken, kind characters ╥﹏╥

The story follows Li Ying, the Grand Princess of Zhou, who died 30 years ago. Her death... more>> is still a mystery even three decades later. People say her death "blessed" the empire because it triggered a major reform.

Cui Xun, your typical cold, intimidating male lead feared by everyone, happens to pull Li Ying's spirit out of the lotus pond where she's been trapped for 30 years. Ghost! Li Ying asks CX to help uncover the real reason behind her death.

Li Ying is portrayed as gentle, obedient, kind, elegant—basically the perfect princess. CX, meanwhile, has the cold-city-guy energy, a loner feared for his reputation and his connection to the Empress Dowager, but deep down he's actually soft-spoken and physically fragile. Truly a tragic CP.

The story starts off as a mystery why did Li Ying die? But slowly, everything ties back to the Tianwei War six years ago, a burden Cui Xun has been carrying alone all this time.

Li Ying was deeply loved by her family and those around her. Her death was a huge blow to everyone. Throughout the story you'll keep guessing who the killer is. Every time: "OH IT'S DEFINITELY THIS PERSON—" then nope. Wrong again.

CX originally has his own reasons for helping LY, but after a certain mistake, guilt pushes him to genuinely solve the case. Turns out her death and the war are tightly connected—cause and consequence tangled together.

Unlike Li Ying, who was loved and cherished, Cui Xun carries a terrible reputation because of the Tianwei defeat. He was blamed for things he never did. His past is heartbreaking—his time in Tujue was basically torture. CX definitely shows signs of PTSD from the ab*se he went through.

Spoiler

For me, this isn't slowburn romance, because it's shown early on that Li Ying liked CX even when he acted cold and dismissive. CX liked her too, but he felt too unworthy and weighed down by guilt to act on it.

[collapse]

I love that Li Ying takes the initiative in their relationship. CX may be cold, but he's also receptive. Since they genuinely like each other, there's no annoying miscommunication. Their issues get resolved properly, not dragged out for drama.

Spoiler

Besides the guessing game for the culprit, we also get openly annoying villains Shen Que and Ashina Wuduo but ugh still disgusting.

[collapse]

Halfway through, the plot focuses more on unraveling the Tianwei case instead of LY's death. I don't think anyone in this story is overpowered—everyone feels painfully human and sympathetic.

One died young despite being good.

One lived but carried a rotten reputation. A love story between a ghost and a human.

Solving these two intertwined conspiracies is exhausting and sad. Toward the end, the emotional struggle peaks. I swear authors love giving good people the most tragic backstories. They do everything right but get tortured by life.

Spoiler

I cried so hard at Cui Xun's fate in his current life. He's genuinely a good person, but his ending was so cruel. Ashina Wuduo is actual tr*sh. My poor man became so sickly... it hurt to read.

But honestly, the ending for this life is probably the best path for both CX and LY. Destiny and karma needed to be balanced before they could get their happy ending. At least they finally got peace. <3

[collapse]

All the characters received endings that matched their actions—very satisfying. The evil were punished, the good got the lives they deserved, and every grudge was settled.

**Overall: 8 out of 10.**

Thank you, author, for giving me soft-spoken, morally good leads.

More Spoilers

Spoiler

I was likeee BOOM BOOM DUAR at Li Ying's actual cause of death. The hints were there but I still didn't catch them. Who would've thought her fate was so tightly connected to Cui Xun?

Also, thank you author for the incredibly sweet reincarnation life. I absolutely adore CX in that lifetime—once his emotional chains were gone, he could finally love normally and even pursue LY properly. A literal hidden gem of a male lead.

[collapse]

BIGGEST SPOILER

Spoiler

Li Ying literally **repeated her entire life cycle** to meet CX again AND to push the imperial reform forward. She traveled from the future back to the past to give spoilers. And omg that "s word"... who would've expected THAT?? Good thing her good karma and the blessings of her loved ones let her break the cycle in the end.

[collapse]

Sorry to all the wrongly accused characters LOL.

Another thing I adore: Li Ying comforting Cui Xun. CX has such low self-esteem, and LY's kindness just... heals him. I swear it's been ages since I found a female lead this gentle and pure.

And despite being a cold city guy, Cui Xun turns into a total softie for his girl. He listens to her like a loyal puppy.

And tbh, you can't really hate the self-sacrifice trope in xianxia/xuanhuan. It just comes with the genre. Still, the novel stays focused and doesn't wander off into unnecessary family side stories.

Most importantly:

Spoiler

our CP gets a happy ending.

I have two words for this novel: "dog blood."

I honestly don't know how else to describe it. I don't even know how to rate it, saying I liked it wouldn't be the whole truth, but saying I didn't like it wouldn't be true either. This novel had a lot of likeable parts... and a lot of unlikeable ones. Warning spoiler contains me mostly ranting, so if you want a tldr, just skip this.

Spoiler

It honestly felt like the author's main goal was to torture the male lead just to wring emotions and sympathy out of the readers. And yes, I get why the ML's sufferings were "important" to the plot... but also, I don't.

The premise and summary hooked me, it promised angst, mystery, heartbreak, and bittersweet moments. And to be fair, it delivered on those... just in the most shallow way possible. I couldn't bring myself to invest emotionally, partly because from the very beginning, the plot holes were practically waving at me. And don't get me wrong, if I really like a novel, I can absolutely overlook gaping plot holes. But here? I couldn't.

The Characters — or Lack Thereof

The two leads had no personality. The FL is pure, innocent, surrounded by love her whole life... and that's literally it. She's flawless, selfless, and endlessly generous, with no other defining traits, desires, or flaws. She's the perfect, porcelain doll heroine and I personally like my characters with a bit more complexity (it's a personal take)

The ML? Basically the same story. His whole personality is thinking of the FL as the untouchable moon while he's the dirt beneath her feet. This metaphor is hammered in every three chapters until the very end. Yes, thank you, author, I understand he has self-esteem issues and guilt. But there's no depth to him beyond that.

His only real desire in life is to clear the name of his fallen comrades and their army. Noble, sure, and he's willing to sacrifice anyone and anything to get it done. We're constantly told that he framed loyal officials while acting as the empress dowager's hunting dog - but somehow this is all brushed aside after the FL tells him, "no, you're a loyal dude and ily regardless of who says what and ik they lying anyway." Suddenly, everything's fine? Yes, he didn't betray his land or sovereign, was framed himself, lost all faith in justice, and became a 'yakshaka' on the road of revenge - great, we've seen plenty of male leads like that. But here? He suddenly morphs into a misunderstood pookie, like... where did the morally grey side go? The only "bad" thing he did was deceive the FL, and after that, nada. The only past regarding him is how he was tortured, and had to endure humiliation, is it sad and makes the reader feel miserable? yes. But did he also lack a real struggle in his character, also yes. His character setting could have had depth, but like I said - poor execution. These 2D characters remained 2D for me, unfortunately.

Now... the plot logic. Oh boy.

The FL is a ghost, but somehow changes her clothes and jewellery every day? Okay, they were "offerings" from her family, fine. But then she gives them to the ML?? How??

She even feeds the ML the food offerings she receives... WHAT?

No one questions how the ML can see or touch her?? And apparently the 2nd ML and 3rd ML can also see and touch her (those two had some reasons atleast but the ML ??) The 2nd ML has a whole business with the supernatural world, but we get zero insight into how it works. Basically there's no world building. The FL has no shadow and no footprints on the snow but can somehow pluck flowers and catch petals, and the ML can put flowers in her hair, so I'm guessing random people will just see the flower/petal, float?? okay leave that.

Established rule: FL cannot touch living things. Then later... she's catching fireflies. Excuse me??

And I could list a dozen more "wait, what??" moments like that. It just disrupted the flow so much.

The Unnecessary Love Interest Overload Why do both MCs have so many love interests?

For the FL: There's even a 40ish something shadow guard who's been in love with her for years, can see her because he is the daoist disciple of the evil guy, who is in cahoots with the evil minister, and somehow works for the emperor as well. This man is collecting job titles like Pokémon cards.

For the ML: The 3rd FL is obsessed with him after... watching him get treated like dirt and thinking, "Wow, I love his tenacity"? The concept could've worked, but the execution was awful. LIKE GIRL, you're telling me she watched him get tortured inhumanely and she, falls in love with him ???? what ?? only because she thinks wow he didn't betray his country and stood up against the evil 2nd FL whom I couldn't even dream to challenge and so yes I love him. LOVE him enough to die and become a strand of obsession, girl ?? wtf even is your obessession?? ISTG

The rest of the side characters are selfish jerks who spit on the ML, though some conveniently change at the end after the ML single handedly (with the help of 2 of the 2nd mls) brings justice to the fallen army. Yay, I guess.

The only reason I kept reading was because the novel had potential, the setup was intriguing enough to see how it ended. But the execution? Choppy, redundant, and vague to the point of frustration.

The mu*der mystery? Completely botched. After the first suspect was cleared, the story threw in three more suspects who also turned out innocent. By the end, all tension was gone. (I guessed who the mu*derer really was after the 2nd suspect was cleared and damn I was right, Idk if it was apparent enough or not tho)

And yet... I did enjoy the final chapters and the epilogue (minus the Tianwei Army and Emperor/Empress extras didn't bother). After all that dog blood, I guess I needed the happy ending to feel like my time wasn't entirely wasted.

[collapse]

Final verdict: Loved the premise, liked the broad character ideas, but everything was so shallow it could've been written in a puddle. Bad writing wasted what could have been a genuinely good story.

Gonna refrain from rating cuz I really don't know how to.

Maybe others will find it really good/worse so make your own judgement ! <<less
