In My Opinion:

What would you do if it was your last day on earth? Would you cry? Would you lie to yourself? Or would you just accept your fate, and die?

Written from the 1st-person point-of-view, our unnamed character narrates the tale of their last day. Just drawing an assumption here, but they are probably a salary person working a white-collar job they don’t feel particular affection for, with a limited circle of acquaintances. As is customary for Japanese web novels. Moving on.

It is a very sparse story. Perhaps even bland,... more>> if it weren’t for the two mentions of a meteorite barreling towards the earth. But for descriptions of the apocalypse, the day is bright. Sunny, warm, breezy. The protagonist plays an offline game, eats cup ramen, and when their handheld console finally powers off, waits for the ineluctable end.

“But I’m glad I was able to enjoy the last day slowly like this.”

For what it is, this is probably what most people would do. Or at least corporate s*aves with an insignificant amount of disposable income. Maybe I’m relating a bit too much. But when faced with a rhapsody of the inevitable, what can the typical individual do? Except accept it, and go on with life as they always have.

There isn’t much to say here, given the briefness of this oneshot. For how laconic its prose is, this story does indeed give a rise to some rumination on quotidian life, and just how mired in daily motions we are, that even an apocalyptic event is just brushed off with all the emotion one dredges up for some catastrophe in some far-off country.

As always, big thanks to the author, and definitely the translator as well. While the flow is mildly clunky at times, the grammar is still decent and the vocabulary is fittingly blunt. Kudos to you, I appreciate all your hard work, author-sama and definitely translator too.
