“From the first time I saw you, you were always my sun. However, at some point, I realized something.”

“If the sun is too bright, you cannot see the stars.”

Kristoff Schneider, the heir of the Schneider Family and a 100% winning lawyer.

Marianne didn’t know why such a perfect man proposed to her. To her, who was just a commoner’s daughter.

However, she couldn’t turn down his proposal. Because she loved Kristoff. She expected that he might also love her.

Therefore, she endured the unfamiliar and rough life. She endured the mockery and contempt directed at her.

“I’ll give you three minutes. Make it short and simple.”

However, she couldn’t bear Kristoff’s indifferent attitude anymore.

“No, only a minute is enough. Let’s get divorced.”

Kristoff began to search for Marianne like a madman after knowing she had left only the divorce papers behind.

He thought everything would be solved just by finding Marianne, but when he met her again, she stated that she didn’t love him anymore.

“Don’t turn me down, Marianne. I beg you.”

To Kristoff, Marianne is the simplest woman in the world. And to Marianne, Kristoff is the toughest man in the world.

Their story starts from there.

In line with the current trend of "much maligned and long suffering wife finally asks for a divorce, and her formerly cold husband realizes what he's missing when she's gone" stories.

This one sets itself apart by adding a mu*der mystery and seems like it's going to make the FL a badass.

The deal: the FL actually was pretty badass when she met the ML. She was one of the first women ever to be accepted into law school, which is where she met her husband, an icy Marquis-to-be. She fell in... more>> love, hard, and forgot herself for a long time as she put aside her childhood ambitions of becoming a kickass lawyer for justice for her husband's sake and to be a traditional wife. She was happy enough for a while, but her frigid husband smothers most of the affection out of her over the early years of their marriage by his lack of appreciation, attention, and care. It's a love killed by a death of a thousand papercuts. She describes it as each offense adding another log onto the growing pile in her chest.

The final death blow to her love for him which sets the entire woodpile ablaze and then reduces it to ashes is that her sister dies, in a suspicious su*cide under odd circumstances, and he does not take her concerns seriously.

The FL files for divorce, sneaks out to her freedom, and plans to join the local police force so she can investigate things herself.

On the ML's side, he is shark like and calculating. He has childhood trauma preventing him from believing in love and preferring the security of the status quo where he receives all of her endless love and never has to return it.

Spoiler

He was in a carriage accident as a child which resulted in the deaths of both parents. The accident was much romanticized, and it is commonly held that his much-in-love, 'ideal couple' parents died tragically and beautifully protecting each other and their son. While we have not gotten to the details yet, I have the feeling the reality was much uglier, such as his mom tried to ditch him to save herself, and/ or the dad doing the same to save his own skin as well.

[collapse]

He does (secretly, wayyyy deep down) love the FL, (he broke convention to marry FL, a commoner, and the majority of his work and effort is so that no one will ever look down on her,) but he does not allow himself to even acknowledge it to himself. There is something childish about his requirement that he get unconditional love while being a selfish butt, like he wants a mommy, not a wife, even as he ignores her to do his own thing.

Anyways, his wife leaving triggers that shark-like possessive streak of his, so if you like that smidge of yandere, this'll appeal to you.

The success of this ambitious story will depend on 1) how well the mu*der-mystery is pulled off, 2) how convincingly they can navigate back from a Walkaway Wife Syndrome situation, which is next to impossible to do in real life, and 3) the personal evolution of the characters, which will need to be complex to make sense. The FL needs to re-find herself and become the professional shark she was all along to match her workaholic husband and actually speak up when he doesn't meet her needs and hurts her. The ML needs to get over his childhood trauma, realize and express his feelings, embrace the Power of LoveTM, and be a better, more demonstrative husband, while ditching the weird, proprietary, mom-and-kid dynamic he set up with his wife.

All 3 of those things are a tall order for any author. If it can be pulled off without shortcuts or plot magic, this'll be one of the truly great stories on here. If it can't, it'll just be average to meh garbage.

It's still in its earliest days, so I don't know which way it will go, but here's fingers crossed hope that it turns out amazing. <<less

Sometimes I feel like a lot of romance authors don't even try anymore. They just edit the names of people and places, slap in a slight difference in the premise and pray no one will notice that this is quite literally a copy paste of others work.

I'm a huge sucker for reborn villainess stories so I understand the appeal in reading a specific trope you like over and over again but frankly it's getting quite ridiculous. It seems only once a year I find an original story that the author... more>> put a lot of love and time into. <<less

It's a no for me, narratively. TL's good, though.

I liked Marianne right away. She's tough but not invulnerable, and I was excited for her journey to rediscover herself. Unfortunately, she barely had enough time to sit down before

Spoiler

her refrigerator husband (you know the type) is tipped off to her location, whereupon he instantly started following her around during her job and swooped in to save her from peril. I wouldn't even hate watching him thaw and regret and learn to be an emotionally-present husband if Marianne had a chance to even breathe without him being there.

She didn't even get a month to herself. Disappointing.

I love the mystery aspect of this novel. I haven't read many w this sort of being the center of the plot, and it's fun seeing MC using her knowledge to develop her own status and career. We clearly get to see just why she was one of the top law students. She's a great spunky and independent character.

I didn't rly understand just why ML didn't show ANY affection to her. Like everyone knows he likes her bc he chose to marry her even though the marriage had no benefits... more>> for him. But he basically ignored and neglected her for their entire marriage. I get that he's emotionally repressed but still. Plus he shows that he knows how to be affectionate and romantic through his grovelling stage, so that part is a bit questionable to me.

So far there's a lot of improvement in their relationship though so I'm enjoying the story. <<less

What made me love this from the start is how we we're directly introduced the runaway scene at the very first chap. Marianne was clever on how she managed to got away, I was so excited for her that now she can finally focus on herself and find a a name for herself, but noooo. She was barely given 4 fudgin days and that refrigerator husband caught up to her because of a snitch and now follows her around. I had to drop this as the narrative is already cliche... more>> and very obvious what will happen next. Marianne's wavering decision because of small things that asshat's doing which was unfamiliar to her. Don't get me started about that ML and I don't care about his "childhood trauma" as if that gives him excuse to neglect his wife. ML admitted himself he doesn't know what love is and is very cunning to use whatever means to get her back by exploiting her love again. FL knew this but then like wavers each time which is honestly tiring. <<less
