The first meeting between Yuri Gable and Ling Xinlu was the worst. It was supposedly to save Xinlu’s life, who had pointed a gun at Ilay Riegrow, but Yuri ended up shooting Xinlu at their very first encounter. Because of this, Xinlu formed the worst possible first impression of Yuri. However, Yuri only feels pity and sympathy for Xinlu. The sharp-witted Xinlu senses that Yuri has some affection for him, but he’s thrown off by Yuri’s oddly calm and straightforward reactions despite that affection. Gradually, Xinlu begins to realize his own growing affection for Yuri and comes to understand that it’s different from the affection he felt for Jeong Taeui. Determined to make Yuri his own, Xinlu struggles and strives toward that goal…

I genuinely wanted to drop this book so bad at the start because I despised the male lead. He was such a toxic, insufferable manchild. There's no sugarcoating it, he hits the MC for no good reason. Literally punching him in the face just because he's upset. And this wasn't a one-time thing; it happened several times. The beginning was so unpleasant that I questioned why I was even putting myself through it.

But then something shifted along the way, and I somehow started to like him??? Which says a lot,... more>> because I don't change my mind about characters easily. The ML does a complete 180. There's really no other way to describe it. He goes from a violent, cruel manchild to a hopeless simp for the MC, and watching that transformation unfold was deeply satisfying.

Every horrible thing he said to the MC, every insult, every moment he called him disgusting or told him to stop looking at him, all of it came back to bite him. And it was glorious. The very things he mocked the MC for, he ended up doing himself. He fell, and he fell hard. To the point where he'd get emotional if the MC didn't match his intensity, turning into this clingy, lovesick, pathetic, but somehow adorable mess of a man who couldn't function without the MC by his side.

"Want me more, " Ling Xinlu whispered suddenly. "Be more greedy for me. Always look at me, want me more. Enough to ease my anxiety.

Like this, with a yearning so unbearable, just as much as I crave you, consumed by this desire."

The way it shifted from hatred to obsession, from cruelty to desperate, aching need, it hit so good. Don't you just love it when the ML ends up eating his words? When the arrogant, condescending jerk at the start turns into a man who can't even breathe without the person he once belittled? It's everything I live for in stories like this.

Honestly, I ended up loving this book even more than the first one. Sure, it's a rough, borderline unbearable start, but if you stick it out, the payoff is so worth it. Highly recommend, especially if you enjoy watching irredeemable characters crumble in the best way possible. <<less

Raga is extremely well written. This novel focuses heavily on character development and quiet healing. So if you're expecting something similar to the Main Story, it really isn't the same thing. Raga is much slower and more introspective.

One of the things I really appreciate is how the novel explores maturity and immaturity in a grounded and realistic way. Yuri is older, Xinlu is younger, and the age gap isn't just there for the sake of it, it shows in how they think, how they feel, and how they act. Yuri... more>> is calm, composed, and emotionally intelligent. He knows Xinlu still holds feelings for someone else. He knows he might never be loved back. But he doesn't expect anything from Xinlu not love, not affection, not even gratitude. All he wants is for Xinlu to be at peace. To feel calm. To be safe. Yuri never tries to "fix" Xinlu or change him. He doesn't chase or force anything. He just stays quiet, steady, constant. And somehow to me that ends up being more moving than any grand romantic gesture.

Now, I'll admit, Yuri is a bit of a weirdo. He openly says he liked Xinlu when Xinlu was still a child and thought of him as beautiful. There's really no reason to pretend that isn't weird. It is weird. Someone older saying they found a child beautiful is definitely questionable and uncomfortable. I'm not trying to deny that. But the reason it didn't feel predatory to me is because Yuri never actually acts on it in a harmful way. He never approaches Xinlu inappropriately. He never crosses boundaries. He never manipulates or grooms him. Even when he had opportunities, he didn't take them. It's more like a distant, bittersweet admiration. That doesn't erase the weirdness, but it does prevent it from turning into something outright disturbing. And I'm honestly just glad the story didn't take it to a worse place.

Yuri's emotional restraint says a lot about his character. Even years later, he mostly just watches from a distance. He worries. He cares. But he doesn't demand anything.

He genuinely just wants Xinlu to live a good life. In terms of emotional maturity, Yuri might be the most grounded and empathetic character in the entire series.

Another thing I really admire about Yuri is his moral clarity. He knows right from wrong, and he isn't afraid to call people out even people he cares about. If someone does something wrong, Yuri will say it. Even if that person is Xinlu. Of course, he's not perfect either. There are moments where he softens too much for Xinlu and lets things calm down. Still, you know.

Now let's talk about Xinlu. Before reading Raga, I saw so many comments painting Xinlu as this irredeemable character you know violent, manipulative, emotionally unstable. And in a way, they're not completely wrong. Xinlu is difficult. But at the same time, I don't think those criticisms tell the full story especially in Raga. Compared to other characters in this universe, Xinlu is honestly more tame. More emotionally fragile. And definitely more developed here than before.

In Volume 1, yes, Xinlu is angry. He's volatile, lashes out over small things, and sometimes goes way too far (like literally trying to kill Yuri at one point). His anger comes from so many deep wounds that even tiny triggers can set him off. Xinlu has already lost his so called first love and even lost an eye because of Ilay, so it makes sense that he's deeply damaged and struggling just to hold himself together.

But in Volume 2, things shift. We start to see a side of Xinlu that's rarely visible to anyone but Yuri. His vulnerability. His raw, unfiltered emotions. His need to be seen and accepted without judgment. He goes from being a bitter, reactive person who throws tantrums when Taeui or Ilay are mentioned to someone who quietly seeks Yuri's approval. Like a stray cat slowly learning it's safe to approach. There are these moments where Yuri gets mad, and Xinlu panics not out of fear of punishment, but fear of being abandoned:

  • "Are you mad at me?"
  • "I was wrong, so please don't be angry anymore."
  • "Mr. Gable, you're scary when you're angry."
  • "Sorry. I think I went too far."
  • "I'm sorry. Don't be angry. I was wrong."
It's heartbreaking. Because for the first time, Xinlu is reflecting. He knows when he's wrong and he apologizes. He becomes softer, more uncertain, and more human. One of the things I appreciate most about Xinlu is that, despite everything, he has morals. He knows right from wrong he just doesn't always think about the consequences. That's really the key to his character. Like when he planned to drug Taeui, he knew it was wrong. But he didn't fully process the aftermath, the ripple effects. That's what he lacks. Not a conscience, but foresight. Emotional maturity comes slowly to him, but it does come. I like that complexity.

And now, the water. I never liked water or seawater much in real life. It's sometimes salty, sticky, and overwhelming. But after reading Raga, I kind of get it. I really get it.

Water in Raga is symbolic. It represents calm, healing, and depth. The ocean is vast, unknowable, sometimes chaotic but it's also the only place where some people can truly breathe. It reflects Yuri's presence: steady, deep, accepting. And it reflects Xinlu's journey how he slowly learns to stop thrashing and just float.

Water holds everything. The pain, the silence, the peace, the memories. It's where people come to cry, to remember, to forgive. And in Raga, the water becomes a mirror to the soul. It's where Xinlu begins to rest not just physically, but emotionally. It's the place where he begins to become someone again. Not for Taeui, not for Ilay just for himself.

I hope people can find their own water. A place or a person where your heart can rest.

Where you're not trying to prove anything. Where you're allowed to be soft.

To be seen. To just be you.

Just like how Ling Xinlu found his "water" through Yuri Gable. <<less

At first, I thought Raga would be too much toxicity. But it turns out, it wasn't that bad.

There's actually non-con at their first time, and it's consensual afterward...

What's good about this one is the protagonist (Yuri) is in love with the main lead (Xinlu) from the start, to the point that he's aware of his shitty or toxic personality. He knows that his smile with that pretty face is just a facade, and what's genuine.

Although Yuri is in love, he doesn't expect anything from him. I love this part, and... more>> I love his character the most. He acts his age—mature, understanding, patient towards Xinlu,
Spoiler

who's so violent after he was betrayed and lost his one eye.

[collapse]
If ever Xinlu does something wrong, he tells him what it is to make him realize. He's pretty upfront about it. Xinlu also has morality, but he'll only apologize when he knows he did something wrong.

Spoiler

In Vol 1 Xinlu is violent. There's a lot of reasons why he's acting that way. First could because the anger when he felt betrayed by Taeui and Ilay. Second when he wanted to killed Ilay but he was stopped by Yuri. Third could be fatigue that he experienced when he lost his one eye. He has different kind of emotions that triggered every time he remembers something.

[collapse]

and then He went from being a bastard who would throw tantrum whenever Taeui and Ilay were mentioned TO a pathetic little kitten who keeps wagging his tails to be notice by Yuri. There instances that Yuri would get mad. And Xinlu would ask him "are you mad at me?" "I was wrong, so please don't be angry anymore."

you'll get to know Xinlu softened because of this, when Xinlu keeps asking Yuri this constant question:

"Mr. Gable, you're scary when you're angry" "Sorry. I think I went too far. I was wrong." "are you angry?" "..... I'm sorry. Don't be angry with me. I was wrong." "Don't be angry. I truly, I'm afraid when Mr. Gable is angry." etc... he'll apologize when he knows he did something wrong.

I'm gonna say that Xinlu is too lucky having Yuri after what he had done. Yuri is just the best of the best.

While Xinlu's comfort person is Yuri his water, Yuri is both—his favorite water and that radiant and beautiful flower that had bloomed underwater Xinlu. Once they become a couple, the story turns out to be not that toxic and wholesome, that I'm at peace reading it.

I love every dialogue of Xinlu when started to yearns

"You can't outlive me. You can't die before me. We're going to die on the same day and at the same time."

"I don't care where I go. Wherever I go, I'm immersed in my water." and this line of Yuri, "Just know that no one in this world can love you, Ling Xinlu, as much as I do." <<less

4/5 I really loved Yuri's way of showing affection and his gentle love towards Xinlu — how despite Xinlu's aggressive demeanor Yuri understood that his t was due to his vulnerability and insecurities, and kept looking out for him and helped him find his 'water' (Xinlu's jealous scenes also really got me bursting out laughing)

one star down because I wasn't really fond of Xinlu's forcefulness at times (or maybe thats because I prefer gentle affection or "bland grass" as Xinlu said)

Better than the main story!! In the beginning, the male lead is a bit of an ass, but if you can get over it it a masterpiece. He' transformation for the better, he's yearning for MC. They are such a perfect match. Yuri's love is is a constant affection in a linear motion, which ml's love is passionate and hot. Mc's mental stability and maturity is the mental anchor of their relationship. The slow transformation of the ML from bitter and violent to madly in love with the MC is... more>> such a joy to watch. Definitely recommend!!! <<less

I like this novel way better than the main one. The relationship between Xinlu and Yuri is surprisingly healthy despite Xinlu being a red flag.

Ling Xinlu (younger top) x Yuri Gable (older bottom), I love their dynamic lmao. Xinlu on season 1 is like a fierce stray cat that dislike Yuri, but he goes full on possessive mode after that.

Spoiler

Xinlu is the definition of husband scared of his wife lmao, the way he keeps on asking Yuri if he is mad, and Yuri being the adult he is keeps on saying no.

[collapse]

Yuri is the best character within the passion series, a literal green forest i lowkey want him as my husband if xinlu don't want him. He's the most patient adult within the series as well as the most sane one. This is proved how he can handle the childish shenanigans Xinlu always show to him with gentle patience.

There are 2 personal favorite scenes within the novel that I love:

Spoiler

When Xinlu killed someone then noticed that Yuri saw him killing someone, he's scared because Yuri might think bad about him, but yuri thought that it's better if others get hurt as long as it's not Xinlu that got hurt (pardon my grammar).

[collapse]

And

Spoiler

Most iconic scene within the novel. Xinlu, with a bouquet of flower beside him, sit outside the door to prevent Yuri from leaving (he overheard Yuri talk about going back to germany). Then he threaten Yuri that he will drain all of the sea water if he leave while crying (this one is funny af 🤣). Yuri then explained that he's going to the germany to sell his house since he's going to live with Xinlu in china. Lmao I can't with xinlu 🤣

[collapse]

The *ehem* scene between the two is not much compared to the main couple, only 3 times (2 on the main story, once on the extra), but you can read the kr fanfictions if you want more *ehem* scene between these two cutie. <<less

Finished the novel just now and just 😭🫶🏻💘🥹✨🤌🏻

I haven't read "passion" and it was in my tbr. I saw some tiktoks about this novel and because it looked interesting I started reading it. Now I am so so so so so happy that I did! This novel is just perfect! Yuri and Xinlu are so f*cking cute and perfect together!

Honestly I saw people saying this story is better than passion and after reading it I finally get why they said that and lemme say, I 100 % agree!... more>> Tho I haven't read passion, ik a lot about it and I also got to know a little about the MCs of it from this novel and u know what, I am so glad I didn't read it. Because I can tell they would just annoy me 😂

I don't think taeiu and okay are anywhere near the level of Xinlu and gable. I personally dislike them and I hate ilay even more now because of him blinding one eye of Xinlu. Yes I am biased 😂. I have read this story and I obviously prefer these babies over them, so ofc I would hate them for doing anything to make my baby Xinlu sad.

I have removed passion from my tbr, I don't think I would be able to enjoy it at all, now that I have read Raga. This story was so good and it has increased my expectations a lot! I don't think passion would come anywhere near it and as many readers of passion has already said "Raga is superior to passion".

I want to be sad that it's only 27 chapters but I also feel that it was quite a perfect length. It didn't drag nor did it feels rushed! The pacing was just perfect and I really loved the main characters and the story!

The way they love each other and the way the story is narrated is just so beautiful 🥹💖💘. I loved it! I want more people to love this novel. Raga is better than passion!!!! Read it!!!! <<less

I think most people doesn't really understand Xinlu×Yuri dynamic and Xinlu at the start of this novel

Spoiler

Xinlu- he is Mr Perfect. He literally has everything from look to skills and is exceptionally good at everything he do. On top of all these, his family spoils him rotten too. So he is borderline arrogance and put his pride about all else. He never show his true self to anyone except his parents.

But Yuri see all of him- From the beautiful mask he put on for show to the darkest corner of his heart. He knows Xinlu's smiles are fake, knows he is a prideful man that can be crazy at times and knows he didn't really love Tay. And he is not afraid to call him out on his wrong doings even if this means Xinlu will get irritated and try to harm him.

He isn't masochist or anything like that. He is intentionally letting Xinlu hit him so Xinlu's anger will fade without him harming himself. He knows getting his pride shatter is the most shameful thing for Xinlu and that moment may be the darkest days of his life so he choose to stay with him out of his love for him - hoping to get him back to his normal self even though he knows Xinlu hates him as much as he hates Ilay (because he was there when Xinlu was at his rock bottom.)

And also he is not someone who would act like a victim for things he himself choose. He already knows what staying with Xinlu is gonna be like after Xinlu got his pride and eye ruined.

Xinlu's unwillingness to be an open book to someone and Yuri's ability to confront things head on cause many clashes at the start of their story but this is also the very reason why their love feel really genuine and tranquil like water at the end of this story. Those arguments gave them the leverage to be honest with each other.

This may be a little hard to see but every time Yuri confront him like that, Xinlu's way of thoughts sway to a better direction. He may try to cover it with anger or causal remarks but if you really pay attention to him, you will know that he listens to Yuri's words almost every time. If Yuri express he is unsatisfied with something Xinlu did, he won't do it again.

Xinlu trying to hold onto Tay is actually him trying to hold onto his shattered pride. He hate being worse than someone in everything he do. So losing Tay is like a failure or a stain in his perfect life. That's why he is doing everything to get him back. He doesn't care whether Tay is alive or death, or whether he hate him or not

Some may think he is obsessed and in love with Tay from the outer perceptive but when you get to know the real lover boy Xinlu, all of this become crystal clear.

For me, when he decided to swim together with Yuri after they talked about that old couple, I instantly get the feeling that he is in love. Ling Xinlu- who can kill the one he claimed to love for his pride is trying to cherish a little time together with Yuri even though he isn't a morning person, even though he hates swimming and never set his foot in water after almost drowning once in his childhood, just so he won't have regrets when he grows old. Later, even when he gets upset with Yuri about the contract, he still swim every morning with him.

And the second one is when he first said Yuri smell like water. It's not that Yuri really smells like water. It's a feeling he got for Yuri. Yuri told him once about what water means to him and wished Xinlu would find someone like that too -Someone like water- and yup Xinlu think Yuri smell like one.

When Xinlu is truly in love, his world literally revolve around his lover.

[collapse]

I'm not into Korean novel but this one hits different. Their love healed me. <<less

Absolutely goated couple, their dynamic is probably my favorite out of all 3 couples. I didn't finish passion cause I absolutely hate Ilay idc if he's "hot" so take this slightly biased? Also Yuri seems like he doesn't have a backbone in the first few chapters but honestly his personality is done so well like you can understand why he's able to handle Xinlu. Xinlu is a good ml, his personality suits well to Yuri's since he has the fiercer personality yet also irrational as in he will do anything... more>> he really wants... idk how to explain but yeah! 5/5 my only problems were Xinlu being forceful with Yuri, gave me a slight ick and Yuri not making him cry more haha <<less

Just wonderful.

I wonder how the author can make some books have really toxic male lead but this one is just the perfect combo of obsessive, deep in love, and just a spoiled, ML. The relationship is genuinely very sweet, loving and it's a great dynamic. You know I love ML being a yearner and is a sucker. One similar recommendation is "a letter from Keanu Reeves" (it is not about the actor, their dynamic is a bit the same a bit different)

Ling Xinlu (Shinru) is so adorable in his own novel and clingy to his older Yuri who is serene. So serene and having cold personality that make Xinlu... Actually Xinlu wants his Yuri to love him exactly the same way he loves. But Not everyone loves the same way, right? (Go and read it, you won't regret but you can't ignore the tags:)

WAITT cus this was good. Like why was this lowkey giving... gimme a Big Mac??? SUPERSIZE MY FRIESS!!??? 😝😝 like why is ML and MC relationship soooo cute!!! Ahhhhh this is such a cute enemy to lovers type sh

I was kind of skeptical at first because I was like, ‘ male lead it’s going to be possessive, but at the start of the story hes very abusive and beats on MC’???

I thought it was gonna be like that type of ab*se where it’s like out of nowhere ML suddenly beats... more>> on MC black and blue. but maybe it’s cause I was reading it wrong, but it didn’t seem that bad to me. it was gruesome, but I’ve read way worse.

but I feel like this story would have been up there with my top 5 if there was gruesome crime thrilling scenes. like I like it when I’m reading a story where there’s horror in it and thriller scenes in general because it just keeps me on the tip of my toes!! but this was good very very good.

ML is so black flag but honey ima look past that because hes so cute when hes with MC.

suddenly I’m colorblind lol <<less
